I remember reading about this single in a magazine and immediately called the nearest record store, 4 hours drive away, and ordered the Japanese cd. Still have it. Crossing Over should _TOTALLY_ have been on the album in place of one of the stinkers on there. Same with Cherone: There's an unreleased track on UA-cam that should have been the first single, better than any other track on VH III.

@Should've Been On The Album yeah good times, The other two were burned cds of Alice in chains and Tool. So many great songs from those 2 it was hard to pick what to put on a single cd. Love the concept of your channel. I'll stay tuned for more!
Great suggestions. Here in Australia Get The F Out was actually in the album but I know it was cut for Beggar’s Day in other places. I’ll have to look into it!
I first discovered this song at a record store. It was on a 45RPM of Can't Stop Lovin' You, (which is a song I absolutely hated). I bought it any way because I wanted to hear the new song and I was not disappointed. I still have the 45 although the cover is pretty tore up. One of my favorite songs. Eddie is playing the Super Pluto stereo Ripley on this track and playing drums on Alex's Simmons kit. I think the original demo was recorded back during the 1984 sessions.
Thank you so much for your insight into the track, both from your personal experience and knowledge of the recording of it. :) much appreciated and thank you for stopping by!
This was the first VH song that came up on my playlist on my phone after hearing about Ed's passing. Such a powerful and emotional song that really should have been on the album.
From what I have read Sammy wanted Crossing Over on the album but others....am thinking Ed & Alex felt it would make the album too heavy. Just another thing to add to their contentious relationship at the time. Cheers!! Thanks for a great video!!

May I recommend the song “When Will It Rain” by Extreme? It was a B-side song, more or less. They released it on the “Running Gag” CD instead of placing it on the “Waiting for the Punchline” album. Let me know what you think.
Thanks for the tip Mike! I’ll definitely check it out. I did another Extreme song in a previous episode but I’ll certainly put it on my list to check out! Thank you! :)
Interesting idea for a channel/show. I own the (cardboard sleeve… ugh!) CD single of VH’s “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You,” so I’ve known about the song since it was released about 28 years ago. It’s an interesting tune, but my favorite Van Halen deep cut is “Me Wise Magic” with a (brief) return from David Lee Roth on lead vocals. Great guitar pyrotechnics from Edward on that particular gem of a song, only available on the CD entitled Best Of, Volume 1. As for show ideas, Styx had THREE different songs on various pressings - all track number one on side two - of their fourth elpee, Man of Miracles. There was “Best Thing,” which first appeared on their self-titled debut album; a cover of the Knickerbockers 60s garage nugget “Lies,”; and a Dennis DeYoung penned beautiful ballad called “Unfinished Song.” Personally, l always felt the DDY original should’ve been the song on every pressing and the cover tune should’ve been the b-side. And why repeat a song from your first album on your fourth record?! So weird. In the late 70s and early 80s, The Cars had a slew of stellar b-sides that only appeared on the flip sides of their respective 45” releases. Eventually some were collected on a two-CD retrospective, but that excellent set is long out of print. Billy Joel also had a few cool b-sides, and l see you’ve already done a show on one of them, that l plan to watch soon. Your VH video came up randomly in my UA-cam feed, and now I’m a new subscriber. I look forward to future episodes.(As well as catching up on the ones you’ve done already.) Cheers from a far too hazy day in Noo Yawk, ova heyah! Rock Out & Prog On! Great episode. I never heard of this song (not going to lie, I'm not super versed in the Balance album), but it is crazy unique. It would be a good closer to the album if it was added.
Also, another suggestion, and since we're on the topic of lesser known albums, Def Leppard's Slang album is killer. The song Move With Me Slowly is very cool and wound up on a couple of b-sides, I think, as well as a bonus track on other versions of the album. It's worth a listen. 🙂

@@shouldvebeenonthealbum you're welcome. From the little I heard of the song crossing over, the drum parts have the similar feel to the intro to bachetherim with the chimney stuff and steel drums. Rock on.

Hey Drew, I loved this episode of Should've Been On The Album! If there's a possibility to talk about pink floyd that could be really cool. Otherwise ill enjoy whatever's next on the agenda.
I've been a huge fan of both Sammy Hagar and Van Halen back to their beginnings. It's kind of funny that the brothers wanted the production sound of Montrose, only to wind up with Montrose's front man many years later. Hearing of Crossing Over, I scored a Japanese release Balance CD from eBay, and I was immensely underwhelmed. The core of the song really does scream "bedroom studio" between its shoddy quality and era typical drum machine sound. Even refined and re-recorded, I still can't find that it has a place on Balance. Strung Out is startlingly useless, a polar opposite to the magnificence that is Baluchitherium. As said elsewhere in the comments, Aftershock is an absolute rampage, fully suited for the Van Halen name. If you can identify a worst day of your life, Feelin' is all too familiar in the overwhelming crisis in every aspect of the song. If whichever of the boys wanted to put Crossing Over together for themselves, that's plenty appropriate. I don't find it fits among the tracks on Balance, especially in the idea of capping the end of the album. With Feelin's fade and feeling, that's earned the last spot the hardest way, and having to pass through Crossing Over to get to it would just take away its meaning. tl;dr: Not at all.
Thank you so much for such an awesome comment! :) I can hear what you mean by "bedroom studio" quality of Crossing Over, and I completely respect your thoughts! I love Baluchitherium too and Aftershock is a monster (I was listening to it in the car just yesterday). Feelin' is also an underrated track, and your analysis of it is spot on. Thanks so much for taking to time to write your comment and share your thoughts!
Very good episode Drew. What was the Winger suggestion? Winger has a TROVE of great unrealeased songs that didn't end up on their proper albums for some reason..."Hell To Pay" is my favorite, but it's a toss up with the hellacious "Without Warning" which could have made a great song on a soundtrack for a bank robbery movie. "Only Love" is another killer.
Thanks @smitchix1! :) The Winger suggestion comes from their first album ... But I'll definitely check out the others too. So many bands have several great b-sides or rare tracks - it's hard to pick one to start with! :) I'll add those to my list to check out. And thank you for your suggestions and for watching!
It was recorded originally in 1983 but only as a way for Eddie to deal with the passing of his friend. The video tells more of the story, but it was finally re-done in the Balance era.
I have the vinyl copy myself, I would much rather have “Crossing Over” on it than “Doin’ Time” or “Strung Out.” Hearing Doin’ Time without Baluchitherium just doesn’t sound right. Lol.
I compartmentalize the Hagar years as a totally separate band from Van Halen. That's the only way i can accept it. That said, this song sounds better in the vault.
Thanks for checking out the video Rick! A lot of people have similar feelings. I think even the record company suggested a name change when he first joined!
Totally! I always think of the Dr Hook song when I say it (though I know the Poison cover version better) and it’s just part of my speech: right or wrong. ;) I guess I can’t help my weird idiosyncrasies! Lolol. ;) Thanks for checking out the video!

Yep: spot on. I love how they’ve kept the original and added extra over the top, but the planning of left and right allows you to experience the old and the new. Thanks for checking out the video!! :)
@@shouldvebeenonthealbum if that track would have been on Balance in place of Strung Out it would have been up there with one of VanHagars best albums
@KurtS5150 absolutely!! Couldn’t agree more!!
I have Crossing over on a cassette single on the back of can’t stop loving you.
Yep, that's where a lot of fans found it! :) Thanks for checking out the video and dropping a comment!
You can see the cohesion in the dancing in the first live shot
They were definitely all united at that point in time: one goal, one purpose, all for one and one for all. :)
Hey Drew, I loved this episode of Should've Been On The Album! If there's a possibility to talk about pink floyd that could be really cool. Otherwise ill enjoy whatever's next on the agenda.
Thanks @Neganiswill - I’ll do some digging and see what I can find! But I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! 👍👊
Battle stations?
Written in the wind is awesome. The demo anthology is excellent
Hey diamondd - I'm definitely going to check these out too! :) Thanks for the great suggestions!!
It was on an album balance, but only in Japan
That’s right! As I mentioned in the video it was put there after a little kerfuffle about the album cover. ;) thanks for checking out the video!
Crossing Over does appear on the Japanese version of Balance as a bonus track look into it
Lol ok I spoke too soon😂just saw it
@godreigns1753 lol. All good: thanks for checking out the video! :)
Balance is a great album
This is definitely agree with! It has a few weak spots, but it's still a great release. :) Thanks for checking out the video!
"Late bar" by duran duran is a spectacular b-side, better than some of the tunes on their debut album
Fantastic suggestion Travis - I'll be sure to check it out. Thank you so much and thank you also for checking out the video!
I had the US version single cd, thought the song was great. But odd it didnt make the balance album.
Agreed! :) would’ve been a great inclusion. Thanks for checking out the video! :)
Wasn't this a 5150 leftover? Al is using electronic drums on it.
It was recorded originally in 1983 but only as a way for Eddie to deal with the passing of his friend. The video tells more of the story, but it was finally re-done in the Balance era.
It was on an album the Japanese version
Yep: that was mentioned in the video. ;) thanks for checking it out! :)
I have the vinyl copy myself, I would much rather have “Crossing Over” on it than “Doin’ Time” or “Strung Out.” Hearing Doin’ Time without Baluchitherium just doesn’t sound right. Lol.
Agreed on all accounts! :) thanks for checking out the video: really appreciate it!
3 Eras are cool.
Very cool: really does show the longevity of the band. :)
Good choice Eddie. I get why he wanted it buried.
Fair enough! :) thanks for checking out the video!
JOHNNY BEANE SENT ME HERE
Yes!!! Brilliant and welcome to the channel! :) Thanks so much to @JohnnyBeane for the live stream shoutout - you both rock! :)
Thanks so much for the live stream shout out mate - will send you a message soon! Rock!
Children and Women First? Haven’t heard that one.
Lololol. Yeah, I’m not gonna live that slip down! Lol. Thanks for checking out the video!
If forced to say I think Sammy was a bit more focused
I honestly think their singing was a long the same vocal ranges
The debate of Roth Vs Hagar is a big one! :)
Never heard of this band.
Well, welcome! ;) Thanks for checking out the video!
I compartmentalize the Hagar years as a totally separate band from Van Halen. That's the only way i can accept it. That said, this song sounds better in the vault.
Thanks for checking out the video Rick! A lot of people have similar feelings. I think even the record company suggested a name change when he first joined!
“The” Rolling Stone?😂
Totally! I always think of the Dr Hook song when I say it (though I know the Poison cover version better) and it’s just part of my speech: right or wrong. ;) I guess I can’t help my weird idiosyncrasies! Lolol. ;) Thanks for checking out the video!
But I believe Roth was capable but really not interested at that time
Thanks for the insight! :)
Agree love it! YES shd be on the album. Get rid of the solos n big fat money . That's a terrible song
Thanks for checking out the video Diamond D! I reckon I agree with you! ;)
Filthadelphia..come on bud should of picked a different shirt haha...LETS GO PENS!!!!
Lololol. I wouldn’t know the difference: it’s a $5 t-shirts I grabbed from Kmart! Lol. ;)
Um.... no. The quality of the recording of Crossing Over was bad.
Thanks for checking out the video Chad! :) Maybe, but it's still an interesting to check out the song, and the story behind it is a great one.
Definitely not a big fan of crossing over, seventh seal dont tell me what love can do are some serious jams
Thanks for checking out the video! :) Absolutely fair, and agree with Seventh Seal and Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do. Hangar’s vocals are top notch!
@@shouldvebeenonthealbum all the way
Children and Women first? LOL. Fail...
Well done! You spotted it! Got my words back to front. Ah well, can’t be perfect… ;) thanks for checking out the video tho! :)
