  • This presentation by Star Grieser, Jeff Shaul and Tim Riker was given at the Symposium on AI and Sign Language Interpreting hosted by Brown University April 20-21, 2024.
It describes the partnership between the Coalition for Sign Language Equity in Technology (Co-SET) and the Interpreting SAFE AI Task Force to develop Guidance for the development, deployment, regulation, and evaluation of machine interpreting -- automatic interpreting by artificial intelligence (AIxAI). Note that the members of Co-SET started out with the name "Advisory Group on AI and Sign Language Interpreting" and officially changed their name a few months after this presentation.
A major motivation of Co-SET and the SAFE AI Task Force is to assess the impact of machine interpreting on human interpreters and the language communities who rely on interpreting -- both spoken language interpreting and sign language interpreting.
