I just finished Hell House today due to King's recommendation. It is definitely a product of its time. Save yourself some time and watch this review and read a synopsis instead of the entire book. If you're looking for a really good Haunted House novel, I don't know what King thinks about it, but I loved "The September House" by Carissa Orlando
I have the same problems with "Hell House" as I do with "I am Legend." Stilted, wooden phrasing. The film is great, watch it. It takes many cues from Jackson's "Hill House." I'm reading it now but it has the copious amount of adjectives which infest King's prose.
I was halfway through the book and I had to watch reviews to see what they were. I just found it boring, I couldn’t get into it; I actually found it amusing which is not what I was expecting with a horror. I had to give up which I felt guilty about, any anyone else feel the same?
King said "The Boogens" was a great film, too. Remember that this is what he read growing up.

I thought it was a good horror book, but not great. Not a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it. I can see how it influenced King in his own writing.
