As someone who's read this book 3 times over since I discovered it 6 years ago, and love it to bits. I entirely Understand.

I don’t think that the blog posts were trying to spell out that he took from other pieces of work. I think those blog posts were to make us doubt whether what was happening was real. Expanding further into the point that she could’ve made up the entire thing by searching information on the Internet.

This was a snooze to get through. His family is by far the least interesting part of the movie. The transformation scenes are cool I guess.

One of my favourite novels I love the twisted history of Hell House and its infamous ghostly resident Emeric Belasco The film is awesome but I would love to see it adapted into a miniseries with a lot more influence from the book

I read this entire book while on deployment. I actually enjoyed it. It really had me feeling anxious because it was so bizarre and alien. I still feel good about it. But perhaps if I read it today, I would scoff and roll my eyes. I’m gonna just keep it there in my memory where it’s still a great, unique book.

I found it quite readable, including physically. Then again, I practiced reading by reading the labels on LPs. While the records were playing. I’m probably not a good reference point.

It is SUPERB!!!!!!! I was totally hooked in the first chapters, and loved every page!!!!

Yea. The part I find funniest is that everyone is obsessed with a book that, when the name is simplified, just means book.

I feel that this book was heavily inspired by Berserk. Very good stuff. The ending was not at all what I was expecting.

Between Two Fires is good but it is hardly a horror novel. Alternate history religious dark fantasy would be a better description. Sure it has the horrors of Christianity in it, but still doesn’t work as a horror story. I would say the book feels more akin to reading about the atrocities of WW2. I found the authors writing style to work much better in Black Tongued Thief.

Got this as a present for Christmas, weird that it shows up in my recommends.

I'm an atheist but I could enjoy a fiction based on the rapture. That being said, I think the church has misinterpreted the metaphor of the rapture. I think it means that "believers" would be experiencing "spiritual rapture" during horrific "end times" events while others will not be shielded in that way.

I picked up the book expecting the house story everyone was telling me and at first I was annoyed that most of the story seemed to be abt these two other annoying people. But when it turned out Johnny was lying I’ve never felt so sick to my stomach from only just reading something. I can’t stop looking at stuff abt the book and it’s driving me crazy. I can’t pick up my copy bc it’s in my car which is at a mechanic and my worst fear is I’ll wake up and the book was never real. I wish I never read it

I was put off of this because of Reddit. I don’t know how such a large collective of people can find such bad takes in good horror. Every Reddit favourite I’ve read has been awful 😂 Their sf subreddits though… opposite situation. Makes no sense

I’m currently reading the book and yeah I’m pretty disappointed. I think a lot of the hype is just because the author wrote the text in such a weird, unconventional format. And then in an effort to justify why they like the book beyond “the words are upside down and it made my brain do an uh-oh 🤤” they pour in some bs symbolism or “hidden truth”. The Navidson story is awesome. If they did a book just on that or even a movie, it would be an amazing horror. But the Johnny Truant story is just awful, especially since he constantly lies and is on drugs so I honestly can’t take anything he says seriously. You can easily read just the Navidson stuff and miss next to nothing

It does sound like this book is a bit pretentious and gimick ridden. Sounds like a found footage film in book form. I thought it was a waste of paper to me. Glad I skipped it.

I also loved Ex Machina. I am looking for another good sci-fi film to watch. I'm going to watch this now. Thanks!

Damn, that was a f-up movie! There was a moment where I literally winced. I saw this a while ago, and I'm still ambivalent about her motives. It's interesting what you mentioned about our screens acting as a protection from violent imagery. In the documentary/movie *Waltz with Bashir*, there is a scene describing a photographer who managed to protect himself from the violence he witnessed through his camera. Since it was his job, he was fine looking at the horror until his camera broke. He went mad seeing with his own eyes the repercussions of the 1982 Lebanon War. *Red Rooms* reminded me of this. Fascinating movie!
