XR650R rider here. XRR is the ultimate Honda. I had 6 months fight to get bike plated in EU area. It was all worth it. I'm never gonna sell this bike, such a unique bike, and it always gets attention and people come to ask stuff about it. Also super light, powerful, a lot of powerparts to get and like every Honda, it's bullet proof.
pmw I’m moving to Germany soon. Could you help me with understanding what they will require from vehicle stand point. I was told they are SUPER strict on vehicles and their inspections. I wanted to buy a xr 650l (can’t find the xrr anywhere) well I found one but it was a ‘85 lol but I don’t think I’ll be able to bring my shadow it’s all bobbed out and I was thinking of bringing a 650l instead.
Some say the VFR 750 rc36 is the best Honda ever made... For me it seems clear that Honda's reputation for building quality and reliable bikes has a solid ground.
lol. I don't know why people say these bikes are so hard to start. I've seen kids starting these things. After 20-30 years of electric start being common on bikes people have just become lazy and and either forgotten or have no clue how to kickstart a bike anymore. The 650R even has a built in auto decomp. I have hotcams (so no auto decomp) and a high comp piston and kick starting is a breeze.
Just had my BRP out in the mountains today. Ran into a group of guys riding the Continental Divide on adventure bikes. A couple of them owned XR650Rs and mentioned that it's one of the best bikes ever built. I surprised one of them when I started it with one kick while remaining seated. I really hope Honda brings them back into production like they have with the Africa Twin and CB 750. I'd love to buy a new one.
Great vid. what you say resonates with me...only I'm not sure how your carbs have been set up on the XRs you have but I'm also on my second XRR now and my experiences with XR650Rs is that they are crazy good on fuel. I live in the UK and live near the coast so fairly low altitudes so maybe that helps. I get 85 miles every time before having to switch to reserve, which works out at 60mpg. There are no bikes I know of that can match that level of economy while giving the addictive performance of the 650R.
Unfortunately the honours must be bequethed upon the lowly but rightious XR650L. It is still in production, UNCHANGED, since '93!!! A few years back on some technical but fast mountain roads across the Assu plateau in Kazakhstan I did a trip with a few local guys and one guy had a XR650R, and I could easily keep up with him on my XR650L. We swapped bikes and I was surprised that the XR650R felt more cumbersome and heavy, despite the power difference.

Honda holds a special spot in our lives. Hope Honda is listening, because this guy is on point.

You should try a new Husqvarna 701 or KTM 690!
No he shouldn't. I'll never buy Husqvarna or ktm again. I sold both and bought a xr650.
