  • The Kona Electric is a great car on paper. It looks good, has incredable range and enough toys to keep enven a Tesla fan occupied for a while. The trouble is we don't buy our cars based on paper records. We want to get in them, experience them and most importantly see how the cope with our lifestyle. With this in mind I have spent three days with a Kona Electric to see if it suits my family.

I think this is your best produced video so far. Why? It was creatively filmed, informative, balanced and tested it in real world scenarios. I laughed my head off when your other half gave her comments and then attempted the move from driver to passenger seat. Brilliant and funny. You are a class act in the EV community. Keep up the good work.

We have the ceramic blue Kona with the two tone grey upholstery, the lighter coloured interior makes a huge difference to its feeling of space. Having said that the Kia Soul EV 64kwh would be my first choice had it been available. We had the diesel Kia Soul and loved it for its space the new Soul is even bigger and certainly more interesting if you like marmite!

You should borrow an e-Niro and do the same family test as it has much more room inside, especially for the rear passengers. I am getting around 320+ miles per full charge at the moment - although I must admit that I am not a speed freak and do drive a bit more economically. Generally on more longish trips I get around 5.4 to 5.6 miles/kWh (but on short 3 mile trips to the local supermarket I only mange about 4miles/kWh (due to a couple of very steep climbs to get there).

@@ruedigerpreiss9307 Not according to the Bjørn Nyland Banana Box Test.
The Hyundai KONA EV only has room for 5 banana boxes in the trunk and 16 if the backseats are folded.
The new KIA e-Soul had room for 7 banana boxes in the trunk and 23 when the backseats are folded.
In other words the e-Soul is a clear upgrade in storage space, according to insideevs.com/index.php/reviews/352650/video-kia-e-soul-banana-box-test/
The e-Niro is not that much larger than the e-Soul as proven by the test as it could only fit one more banana box in the trunk and was beaten by the e-Soul, with one box, when the seats were folded.

That's a really good video Ryan. How often when charging do we have someone come up to us and ask the usual batch of questions. People just don't know the facts about life with an ev. This video goes some way to show how "normal" an ev can be. "Climb over to the other seat!!!"
Your tie up with Justev's is going to help demystify going electric.

Greetings from Northern California, thanks for the review. I have a 2018 Kona 1.6T AWD now and love it. None of the dealers here have the EV version, but perhaps they will in 3-4 years when I will be ready to buy a new car. I would seriously consider the electric Kona at that time.

  • @RWBHere
    @RWBHere 5 років тому

This is a superb video, Ryan, not least because you had the family involved in the assessment. That range is phenomenal for a car of its size, and it exceeds that of many petrol cars on today's roads. With care, it should easily exceed 300 miles/500 km per charge. Can't wait for them to appear on the surplus market. And yes, you're correct; the car is in no way quirky to look at, as is a Zöe. Few other electric cars can claim that distinction, and that makes it very saleable. Thank-you.

Another great, very honest video from all concerned!
I'm glad Just EV's have started hiring. I've been looking to hire an EV for a while now, to give them a go. I'm just not able to afford one yet and I've nowhere to charge it, so it'll have to be rapid charged all the time - not so great (although modern rapids do do quite a good job with battery conditioning)!
PS - If you do the TeeSpring thing, maybe some designs of dodgy maths would be good?

Yep, and it's also quite a bit faster than the 2019 Soul EV (which was actually quite slow for an EV: 0-60mph in 11.2 seconds). If it had active battery temperature management I would seriously consider it.

Well balanced video, agree the seating in the back isn’t the best but the range as you highlight towards the end of the video is why I bought mine, fantastic range and means we can go anywhere we want and not have to worry about en route public charging. So far we’ve been to Manchester and back (Walsall) for a flight out of UK and next month we’re off to Plymouth for a long weekend, in my leaf 40kw I would have had to sort out a charge en route but in the Kona I can do it and charge when I get there at my leisure.
To suit my needs (only my wife and I who is too old to clamber over seats BTW) it’s a fantastic car.

Excellent video, I love your family’s perspective on the car. I could see you were trying to find as much positives about the car, battery range is fantastic in it but the cabin and especially the boot space is letting the car down. The price of this car is also out of a lot of people’s range including my own. I will be changing over from an ice car to a 40kw 2020 Nissan leaf next year and so looking forward to it. The Kona could probably suit me but it’s just too expensive...again great video!!

Really interesting video, thank you. At present we are on our 2nd Prius which we like very much. What is pushing us towards an EV is that Christine's hearing is deteriorating so we need a quiet car. We do do some long journeys both in Britain and visiting our friends in France. There is only the two of us but we do not seem to travel light. The Kona has gone to the top of our list as much as anything for the range which has been well demonstrated by two recent videos by Lemon Tea Leaf. It is all very interesting.

Our argument was that the boot had to fit a baby stroller. Luckily it did. My wife drivers a bigger car which we use for holidays. Trips within the country the kona will do. The range is great and the value for money is good. Like you said it feels like a regular car.

I was about to order the e-Niro instead of my Leaf - but now ordered the Model 3 SR+. My sons (12 and 14) has been begging me for a Tesla for years but my wife found the model S to be flamboyant and she is really attached to the Leaf. The model 3 softened her and the price is the same as for the equipped e-Niro. Yes it has slightly lower range but far faster charging. So for holiday trips beyond the 400 miles it is faster than the Kona/Niro and daily driving I do not exceed the range of 240 miles range.
I should also mention that the +12 months delivery time for the Niro is beyond my level of patience.
But consider the Niro - I will keep my Niro PHEV it has very good legroom and a decent luggage capacity. My 14 year old son needs adult legroom and it is fine.....

Range is ridiculously good, as you say it’s basically an ICE car, like Teslas. The thing I’m wondering is, if it can’t work for a family of 2 adults and 2 youngish kids, then what is the intended use? I don’t really know.
When I had a Zoe for 2 years as a single person, I never had people in the back. But then if you have kids, it would be too small. So why don’t we just go straight from 2 seaters to Leaf sized cars? Why have superminis?

I’ve bought one and it works for myself and a wife - i.e. for two of us. Has the range to make a weekly 135 mile motorway commute in winter at motorway speed without needing to stop to charge en route. Agree that the space is limited but as a couple we can then just fold the rear seats down and pack the rear full of all the kit we need to take., Even had a couple of sea kayaks on the roof a couple of weeks ago - presence of roof rails as standard was a key selling point for me in that respect and ruled out the Ioniq which I was initially looking at.

4.5 miles per Kwh is interesting, given that it takes between 4 and 7 Kwh of electricity to manufacture a gallon of fossil fuel, before its transported to a distribution point, that would then use an unknown, to me, number of watts to put the fuel into the ICE car. Wonder what that does to the to the equation.

Can we just mention that if your going to spend good money on an EV then you really need to invest in a dedicated outlet for charging! Using a normal socket seems crazy if you own and EV

@Richard Wood Would the average driver even need to charge up each evening, if the range in the Nero category is that high? A home unit would allow a dash and run capability if the evening warranted it, yet you could charge up say Friday night for anticipated usage Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon! My brother for example does 40 miles per day to work and could charge twice a week if he was range anxious! EV driving makes you have to be more aware of your driving style and how you use your vehicle! Both work trips and pleasure driving require an extra level of thought!
      Nice reviews by the way.
      PS
If your that type of person (me) you would be thinking of Solar, wind hydro and perhaps heat exchangers as a way to mitigate some of the charging costs!

Still not got a home charger. After 9 months and 25000 miles in the Kona (tangerine for the win).... So not necessary. I am camping with a 7,4kw charger on site this week. With less miles and no rapids anywhere near its working fine. I will get a home charger, but no rush!

This is a good conversation chaps. It’s interesting how the additional range will change our charging habits. As long as there is enough mileage to go in the morning then does it really matter what lead / charger we use? Lots of people don’t have driveways and rely on public charging.

I charge my Kona for 4 hours per night, maybe 3 nights a week (Octopus Go - 5p/unit for 4 hrs a night). 130 miles per charge averages out at 1.5p/mile. Charger cost me £350 after grant. Saved that in fuel costs the first month!

The Hyundai Kona and the Kia Niro EVs in the States were always going to be a bad idea for me! I don’t make enough to even qualify for more than half of the $7,500 tax credit PLUS all the dealerships are price gouging people buying these. I was able to get a new 2019 Bolt for way less and ended up able to get the $1,875 tax credit from the IRS and a tax credit for the level 2 charger from Ohio next year!

Should have done the boot comparison with your boot in the 24kwh Leaf 😊I appreciate the range is amazing. But having driven it and felt the wheel spin constantly it’s not a fun experience, very unbalanced. The rear seat room is unacceptable, I couldn’t pick my parents up from the airport in it. Because neither they would fit in the back neither would their suitcases... Not good enough as a family car in my opinion

@@johnflavin1602 yeah I dunno how it manages to get less range then a ZoE.. with the same battery pack... like I love the 208, but I love the Zoe's range... for this type of EV, if i had the money I would go for a Kona but I bet I could just scrape 208 or Zoe :/

Hi there. I am actually interested in the Hyunday Kona, and I wonder if you use the same room of legs as I use. Well, first things first I would like to know how tall are you. Do you think someone with 188cms or 6"2' tall would compromise the room at the back seats?
