      Different experiemce in many respects. We have the 2020 Model and that might make all the difference. Car is always online and from the blulink app we can see everything (charge, state, locked or not etc.) and also pre-heat/cool the car. The monitor seems much faster and the charge state of the battery is always displayed on the drivers screen as well (within 2 sec).
      Here is a question for you though. Why would you ever drive it in Sport mode and "gun it"? Just curious. We find it extremely comfy to drive in Eco or Comfort mode, both of which have more than enough power for any driving situation. Charging locations always seem up to date as far as I can tell - maybe because the car is always online. Greetings from Germany

      @@derdenker1968 Thanks for your comments, it's very interesting to see the variance in user experience as you say it is very different, in a good way.
      Looking into your comments I went to Hyundia's Connectivity Centre website and input our VIN and model. Being a 2019 version ours cannot be connected to the blulink app which means no live updates, no always online. They are not being retro fitted too first generation cars.
      Regarding your point about sports mode and gun it, if the feature is there why not make use of it. Granted not everyone will use it, just like not everyone will use the lane keep assist, heated steering wheel and so on. Also, don't forget our other car is a Tesla Model 3 Performance, we're accustomed to rapid acceleration from a standstill with no wheel spin.

      @@johntisbury just a heads up, 2019 Kia/Hyundai EVs has another liquid for the batteries. According to Kia Sweden they state that it needs replacement after 45,000 km OR every third year whichever comes first (around 28K miles according to Google) and that will cost around €770 atm to replace. No info regarding the MY 2020 but i guess it's the same.
      And i agree about the sport mode, coming from BMW and motorcycles i couldn't stand my slow MY 2019 Leaf in eco mode. I also handed it in after the lease without second thoughts, well no three phase and no CCS also helped.

    Tesla does not have a hatch, that is why I choose my Kona. I just love the car. Also Tesla is very wishi washi with its pricing. You never know the price from one day to the next. At least in N America. I also like a to be able to bring the car to a dealer if there is a problem and Tesla is nowhere to be found in my neck of the woods.

    I have a Hyundai Ioniq HEV, really like it, and have considered a Kona EV as my next car. It's just the charging infrastructure that concerned me, but there seem to be a growing number of charging points now. I managed to update the navigation myself by downloading the files from the Internet. It's a bit of a faff, but haven't had any other issues. Excellent overview of your Kona, thanks.

    • @johntisbury
      @johntisbury  4 місяці тому

      The charging infrastructure is growing weekly and there are now more charging points than petrol pumps in the UK. Charging anxiety typically affects non EV owners. If you can charge at home then there's no issue, if you need to rely on 100% public charging then the amount of miles you do and your location will certainly impact how easy/convenient charging is. The good thing is charging infrastructure is still ahead of EV adoption, both of which are growing year on year.

    I feel blessed regarding public charging my Kona EV here in Québec. There are two main companies Electric Circuit and FLO who maintain there equipment extremely well and a third, Petro-Canada coming into force with 150w & 250w chargers at a really economical cost/charge. Taking into account that we have sub zero temperatures and ice - snow for 6 months of the year, either the equipment is of high quality or they maintain a strict service schedule, plus the charging process is simple !

    Interesting to learn of your experience. How do you think being retired will impact your future decisions as I assume you will be doing a lot less miles pa. Will you keep two rather expensive top end cars in terms of battery capacity or will you consider one large capacity battery for longer trips and not require a 64kwh battery for your second car. Just wondering. I have a Zoë March 2019 and MGZS EV March 2020 ands like you with solar PV one can be charging when using the other.

    Took a test drive of the Kona and loved it. The only thing holding us back is the back seats. The legroom is not adequate and seems pretty low. Did you find it really uncomfortable on long drives ?. By the way in India we have ap choice only between MG Zs Ev and kona.

      @johntisbury  3 роки тому

      Hi Thomas, thanks for watching. I've never ridden in the back of the car, however I suspect if you are tall then yes the back seats are short and low meaning you have no upper thigh support. Leg room can be an issue if the driver / passenger puts their seat in the full back position. The MG I believe is roomier in the back. Depends how often you carry more than two people I guess.

So this video is so so useful! But I’m a bit disappointed about the public charging and also, I do wonder if it’s worth just paying more to get Tesla. I had to rule out bmw i3 because the doors are absolute nightmare. I won’t be able to get my child out of that car in any public car park as you need huge amount of space to open that wretched back door! At the moment the choice is limited, but there are new models coming out almost every day. The other consideration is public charging verses Tesla’s supercharging network. If you are doing lots of miles then the supercharger network is your friend.

    Thanks for this really useful video. I recently bought a plug-in hybrid as a stepping stone to going to a full BEV and I am already looking at candidate BEVs. Your comments on the public charging network reflect my own fears. Yes, the KONA looks good, but it is old fashioned and its style doesn't reflect its very high price. The Model Y will probably be more suited to you, however we won't get those until next year.

    What interests me are the differences you have in the UK from our experience in the US. Our 2019 had the BlueLink that works over the cellular network. We get that free for 3 years when we buy the car - after that we have to pay to renew the thing. It isn't clear how many people will choose to do this when the time comes. Using the cellular network has disadvantages - namely it is slower than WiFi, but
    I think when I first got the car, the list of chargers was static, but after a maps/navigation update, I believe the list is realtime (downloaded over BlueLInk). But if the cell network is weak or overloaded, it seems to fall back to the static list.

    • @johntisbury
      @johntisbury  4 роки тому

      Thanks Eric. As you say it is interesting how the different markets are treaded by certain car manufacturers. I've no idea why they thought BlueLink should not be included in the UK specced version until the new 2020 model was released.
      Tesla have recently taken the same approach with cellular connectivity, 1 year free and then £9.99 per month thereafter in the UK. The Tesla does offer a better service offer for that price. I would not pay that for the Kona as it only offers live update for charging locations and traffic.

    • @johntisbury
      @johntisbury  4 роки тому +1

      Not so much range anxiety, more the ability to charge it when you need it. Public charging network still has a way to go to make it more streamlined and reliable. One approach to payment, not the current need for a multitude of apps, charge cards or membership schemes. Once you have payment method then making sure the charger actually works. That's the anxiety, not the range.

There’s a polar 7kw at glenridding for overnight charging (post and pre journey) however I wouldn’t mind a safety net charge at instavolt at elkesley northbound and markham moor southbound). Just a 20 mi Starbucks top up each way. Instavolt seem the best indie to me. Any other thoughts on charging stops? Like you if I sit at 70 mph a 223 journey in one leg is a bit ballsy.

    I've had a Kona Electric 64 Prem SE since Aug 2019. My experiences closely match yours. I totally agree with what you say with regards public charging, and in the UK it's a mess, though it is improving. I always avoided Ecotricity, as I have found their chargers the least reliable. I use Zap Map to plan my occasional long journeys, e.g. Chelmsford to Devon, Chelmsford to Leeds. I always plan each stop with a contingency stop a few miles on in case the chargers at the first stop are not working. Polar, GeniePoint and Pod-Point have worked best for me, but it very much depends on the routes you take, as there are big differences with charging network coverage by service provider, with for example public coverage in Devon (~Sep 2019) being much more limited compared with Tesla charging points. In terms of fuelling costs, I primarily charge at home, and depending on how heavy footed I am with the accelerator, I am spending around 1 / 7th to 1 / 10th of what I was spending on diesel for my previous BMX X3 and Land Rover Defender cars. Would I buy another Kona? It is difficult to say. Hyundai build quality is functional and good, and servicing is convenient with the dealer only 5 minutes' walk from where I live, but as you say they are a bit old school, and lack of an app form gen 1 vehicles was a big oversight. Hyundai are about to set-up a dedicated EV brand, so maybe they will take the opportunity to reinvent themselves? I definitely think Tesla is in the lead with EV technology and software, and still improving. I avoided buying the Model 3 when first released in the UK, as I was concerned over Tesla's poor QA and customer service record at the time, though this does seem to have improved. I am seriously considering replacing my Kona with a Tesla Model Y as it approaches its 3rd birthday. The VW ID3 looks interesting, but I know VW will piss me off when I start to the look at the cars list of optional extras which will be almost as long as War & Peace!

Remember, a Kw is a unit of power and a kWh is a unit of energy. No-one can deny that Tesla are leaps and bounds ahead of the EV game. It's literally in front of us to see. My issue with Tesla vehicles comes from a finance perspective. Not everyone can afford to drop 40k to buy a vehicle outright, and that is where Tesla falls down. Despite the M3SR+ being only slightly more expensive that's it's rivals in a similar price bracket (ID.3, Kona Ultimate etc.), both the down payment and monthlies are in some cases double to own a Model 3. The model 3 is the one I want, but the ID.3 or Kona Ultimate will be what I end up with when I finally decide which route to go.

      Have you considered looking at the secondhand market which would give you more options for finance. Electric cars don't suffer from the same issues ICE engines do of being thrashed and maintenance and service schedules ignored. Lease vehicles are appearing regularly as their 2 year lease comes up for renewal.

    • @johntisbury

      A difficult question to answer outright as there are so many variable and criteria to consider. Are you buying outright for the longterm, leasing or company car.
      Depending on where you live in the world will influence your decision. If you live in Norway where 75% of all new cars sold have plugs (BEV & PHEV) then a electric version makes sense. Then you need to look at residual value on diesel is very poor and petrol will soon be going the same way, again based on purchase option, outright, lease etc.
      For me it's clear, an electric version is the clear winner in terms of savings on servicing costs, fuel costs as well as being environmentally friendly. That for me is the better long term option. For others based on their needs, circumstances, budget and so on, that outcome may be different.

    Nice informative video, we also have a Kona 64kw, done a number of longer journeys between 2019 and 2021 however despite more and more rapid chargers being installed we actually found more that don't work for various reasons, or only 1 charger was available and someone else was using it!
    So our 180 miles round trip ended up being a lottery with rapid chargers, especially eco trinity which often did not work at all.
    So on our last trip we arrived at 4 different rapid chargers and could not charge due to faults or someone else charging.
    So like you we have just ordered Tesla M3P, because I don't want the stress of the rapid charger lucky dip
    Kona is a good reliable and I agree the boot up process is slow but I really miss not having a app to pre heat the car.
    So the car in that respect is a backwards compared to many other EV's
    I would not buy any car that does not have a good reliable charing network.....I have owned a number of electric cars for 6 years now and what they all have in common is they use the same rapid charging network which is dominated by Eco Tricity who have all the major motorway service stations locations, and trust me that most of the time they don't work!
    So this results in you having to come off the motorway and try and find a rapid charger.....then your stood in the rain and wind unable to charge because you need the card or App....crazy
    I would like to see the government to force all chargers to accept contactless payments and also the ability to fine companies who have chargers in locations that don't work.
    I have no idea how ecotricity have managed to make any money with chargers that often don't work in the best locations!
    I guess they have the sole rights to these locations and maybe they want someone to make them a offer (millions) to take on the poorly maintained network.
    So that's my experience having owned a Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Kona 64kw, Renault Zoe and soon to come Tesla M3P wahooo!

I loved the regen paddles and the ability to control lights and wipers if I did need to. I had no issues charging at public charge points, and was quite a bit surprised by that as I did expect problems. The Tesla definitely has much less body roll and it is great to get over the air updates. Software wise Tesla is far ahead. It's kind of like having an early iOS device vs. an early Android. Android finally managed to blend the different ecosystems, and hopefully something similar will happen with public charging networks. Anyway, thanks for the review.

      Thanks Pawel. I can see the draw of having control over the lights, wipers and regeneration, that makes sense and it a good point in the Kona's favour. I sometimes swap to manual control on the Tesla's wipers when it's a very fine mist the rain. For most of the time I never use the wipers as I use RainX on the windscreen and water skims off above 45mph. I find the manual paddle regeneration can be a little cumbersome if you ever have to turn the wheel and regen at the same time, especially if it's a tight turn at slow speeds. Like most things there are plusses and minuses. Thanks for your thoughts thought, good to hear another viewpoint and someone's experiences.

      You car will be cheaper if you do your own maintenance etc. However, over the longer term an electric vehicle will work out cheaper. For example the cost of diesel has not included to travel the 385,655km (704,655km - 319,000km) or 239,634 miles.
      That's around 15,950.00 litres of diesel. An average price in euros of €1.20 = €19,140.00 based on your average consumption figures.
      Every year you are spending that whilst I will be saving money on fuel costs.

      If you bought a used EV it would be cheaper than the Audi to run and would pay for itself eventually. In the UK, you would be charged to drive into some cities using a car of that age because it is too polluting now compared to modern cars. Also, road tax is free for EVs, you can get discounts for parking in some towns, and charging is very cheap if you can charge from home on special tariffs. Some people also get free charging at work.

      I’ve not been in the back of a police car so unable to verify. 4 years on and for us our Tesla Model 3 Performance is the best car we’ve ever had. Handling, acceleration, quietness, lack of problems, software and UI interface is next level. Compared to other EVs Tesla are years ahead of competitors

    Why did you bother saying at the beginning its not a TESLA/KONA compare video as you did compare the 2 all the way through leaving the Kona looking really poor your a typical spoilt tesla driver, you even include a blown tyre as a negative against the KONA ???, does the tesla make 6 miles per kWh you didnt bother to mentions its best daily score i presume its lower

    • @johntisbury
      @johntisbury  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching Gavin.
      I think you may have misheard me on all the points you've raised. I've included the actual script down below from the video so you can review.
      What I said at the beginning was and I quote:
      "Our other EV is a Tesla Model 3, which we’ve had for 10 months at the time of recording this. This means we have a comparison to gauge the Kona against. However, this comparison is not going to be its 0-60 mph times, top speed, cubic luggage space type of video. There’s plenty of those videos already on UA-cam.
      This is looking at the car from a day-to-day usage perspective. It’s our daily driver, what’s it been like."
      Issues with the car and blown tyre and I quote:
      "INone, nada, nowt, zilch. No issues at all. Nothing has broken, gone wrong or stopped working. Pre Delivery Inspection was good and there were no faults or issues that needed to be rectified. So no issues to report....." "The only incurred out of pocket expense for the car was a £119 for a new tyre due to a puncture in the side wall from a nail. That’s not the fault of the car as it could have happened to any car, however, I’ve included it for completeness."
      Our Kona does not make 6 miles per kWh, from the script I say; "To date our average is 4.4 miles per kWh. That covers our 12 months of driving and 9,926 miles."
      I stand by what I've said comparing the two cars from a day-to-day perspective. Nothing has changed. Having lived with both cars for over 12 months as daily cars, my review is how I find both cars. If you have both cars you may come to a different conclusion, that does not mean that I am wrong and you are right. Everyone's needs, opinions and experiences are different. 3, which we’ve had for 10 months at the time of recording this. driver, what’s it been like.
