I have a ‘94 Winchester sporting rifle in 38-55, made in 1923 and in excellent original condition. I just replaced the original rear 3 blade leaf sight with a Lyman tang sight. With a little practice you can catch the spent case when you eject it. I also have 3 Ballards and a ‘93 Marlin in 38-55. A note to anyone with an antique rifle in that caliber; be sure to slug the barrel to properly size the bullet. I found a considerable difference in bore diameters.
Excellent point about slugging the bore on 38-55's. I meant to mention it in the video, but sadly my memory isn't what it used to be and I forgot to get it in there. Most of the 38-55 Winchesters I've encountered need a little larger bullet diameter to shoot well. I got lucky and this SRC shot well with .378 bullets, probably because it has such a pristine bore.
Ballard was pretty smart, 32-40 and 38-55 have been such accurate rounds for yrs. Anyone question that watch the Sagebrush Long shots channel. They mostly shoot the larger calibers but have shot the 38-55 900+ yrds if I remember right. That 92 has been trouble for a long time and isn't willing to give up just yet. Thanks for all your work.

Great looking little button mag 94 SRC. The 38-55 was my grandpa's favorite cartridge. As a boy he was raised up on the side of Mt Rainier. It became a National Park on 2 March, 1899. My grandpa was born in 1889. Throughout his young adult and adult life he took deer, black bear, and Mazama mountain goat with his 38-55. Great video of a neat rifle in a neat chambering.
I really like button magazines on the '92 and '94. That is the first case colored lever I've ever seen on a Winchester. I didn't know that was ever offered. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Joe! All the 1894 levers and hammers were color case hardened until about 1905, when Winchester started bluing them. CCH isn't a very durable finish, so most of them don't still show the colors unless they've seen little use.

Great rifle and cartridge. I’ve got a new Winchester/Miroku 1894 takedown in 38-55. Starline is your friend when it comes to brass, once it’s back in stock lol. They make it the correct length 2.125 with the correct case mouth thickness. Good article on what they did on their website. Thanks for sharing. Happy trails👍🏻

I do reline barrels and I'd be happy to do that for you. There are also a couple of companies here in the Northwest who are specialized in that kind of work: Redmonds Rifling and Reboring in Washington and John Taylor Machine in Idaho.
What a nice .38-55; a really great deer and black bear gun and would do well on wild boar. I have owned a model 94 big bore .375 WCF but frankly would favor a good .38-55 instead

Gramps had a Winchester 1894 38-55; don't remember if it had a saddle ring, pretty sure it had a full size magazine. It went to uncle Ernie after he died, and HE kept it in his garage. That's where I got to see it. When nobody was looking I got it out of that closet and took a good look at the old girl. This was the late 60's or early '70's. Now that uncle Ernie has past on (along with his kids) I have no idea what happened to that old Winchester, sure wish I had it. Hope it found a good home.

When I came across a nearly new model 94 big bore. 375 xtr for a pretty reasonable price I took it home and have been very pleased with it in the eastern deer woods .
Nice ole 38 55. Not many people shoot them over here nowadays 🇦🇺. There like the 32 20s , you can get the ammo but it’s way over priced. Perhaps one day someone passionate about reproducing old cartridges at a reasonable price will fill the gap in the market.... Thanks Big Trev! We're in the midst of an epic ammo shortage and can't get much of anything now. Interestingly, brass for many of the obsolete cartridges is only made by Bertram Brass down in your neck of the woods.
Not yet, but I just got some tooling for that project and am working on fixing up an 1866 carbine that I'll use to test fire the cartridges. Keep an eye out for that episode coming soon.
First centerfire rifle I ever shot was a button mag model 94 carbine that was my uncles. It's 30wcf though, made in 1899 if I recall and I still have that gun today. Very lightweight handle rifles.
Neat guns. I really wish the 25-20 would have gone bang since I used my uncle’s for small game. I even shot an antelope doe with it after waiting three hours at a dirt tank that had a big lone juniper tree growing by it that provided nice cover. Just out of curiosity, where is the Cinnabar located?
Ironically, I was in my local Sportsman's Warehouse a couple of months ago and the only ammo on the shelf was 4 boxes of 38-55. It's definitely not one you normally see at sporting goods stores.
I want that. I have looked at the Italian reproductions but the inconsistency of the bore sizes (much larger) causes me problems since I have to buy cast bullets vs making them myself. Love the videos. Thanks for the work.

Quick question. 94 SRC carbine front sight base. Is it milled out as a part of the barrel or were they dovetails? I can't see any indication of a dovetail.
@@thecinnabar8442 If you were going to replicate this with a brand new barrel, would it be a combination of end mill and lathe turning? I'm guessing that if you had to shorten a damaged barrel you would be forced to dovetail a fabricated carbine style base or go with a completely different style of period correct dovetailed rifle sight.
I have an episode in the works using old reloading tools. I have to be careful how I present it though. UA-cam has recently banned new content that shows how to manufacture guns or ammo.

Hey Mark , I just joined the Winchester Arms Collectors Association but I'm having trouble posting a question , any advice as to what I may be doing wrong ?
Thanks. After removing the pin, I found that it had been "rebuilt", but someone had botched it pretty badly. It was short, crooked and had lots of porosity in the weld. A new replacement is only around $30, so that's the best option for the customer. I may save the old one and do an episode on rebuilding a firing pin some day.
Did you wind up doing a tour of the 19th century workshop? I can't find it if you did. I am an avid history buff and would love to see an old workshop like that.

I have an old beater 94 in 25-35 that I want to convert to a button magazine. It needs a new barrel anyway so I thought why not dress it up. Can you show the button magazine feature and how it attaches to the barrel?
A local shop just took in five boxes of 255gr 38-55 jacketed bullets and six boxes of unprimed Winchester cases. I don't have a 38-55 rifle but I'm thinking I'll buy the stuff, never know when a rifle will turn up. The old boxes of cases are marked $5.55.

I was shooting .378 cast bullets in this episode. I was a little surprised that it shot so well, since Winchesters in this caliber have a reputation of needing oversized bullets. I suppose the pristine bore probably makes the difference.

Either smokeless or black powder loads can be perfectly safe. Just don't "hot rod" the smokeless loads if your 38-55 is in an old firearm. I posted a video a while back where I thoroughly covered this subject. Look it up if you're interested.

There is no dovetail. They are an integral part of the barrel.

I own three Winchester 94 38/55 25/35
30/30. The 25/35 is my favorite deer rifle. You have to make your own cases and hand load but it's worth it.

You know, if you could get a good cast bullet load for that .38-55 you would have a real deal for deer.

Either smokeless or black powder loads can be perfectly safe. Just don't "hot rod" the smokeless loads if your 38-55 is in an old firearm. I posted a video a while back where I thoroughly covered this subject. Look it up if you're interested.

I paid $3,000, but it would probably take $4-5K to buy one in that condition today.
