I just started your workshop for Turning Autism Around for Toddlers on January 22, 2019 because we babysit our great-grandson who is 33 months old and has autism. I am really enjoying learning more about autism so I can help him learn to talk and recover.

I'm a nearly 27 year old female I'm watching this for myself. I'm not diagnosed but an assessment I did with my counselor suggested that I might be on the spectrum. I've struggled with my diet since I was introduced to anything other than milk. I have problems with texture the most, I'm fine with eating meat, potatoes, dairy and fruit but I gag badly when it comes to vegetables. I want to improve my overall health but it's very hard to do when you hate vegetables.
@@RandomSkyeRoses Corn is a problem food of mine, it's not the flavour of foods that generally bothers me it's the texture. The texture of corn, peas, baked beans is just awful. Most things with a skin on I struggle with
My son will be 4 in November. He's been in feeding therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy since he was 20 months old. He frequently gets jagged on the "easy foods list" you mentioned. If we provide him with the easy foods frequently, how do we prevent getting stuck on certain food items? For example, hot dogs are an item on his easy food list, but if we give them to him, even occasionally, he gets stuck on them and will eat nothing but them for anywhere as long as a week to months. His longest food jag has been on chocolate chip granola bars. He would eat nothing but them for every bit of food and he did this for roughly 3 months. We went through over 90 granola bars per week and a half. If we refused to give him granola bars, he would starve himself. The longest he's gone without food is 63 hours.
This is a great question. Feeding is very complex and without knowing him, I cannot comment much. Have you had a feeding evaluation from a BCBA who has special training in feeding. Many children's hospitals have feeding programs. It sounds like you may need a full evaluation for this. I also talk more about feeding in my courses . You can check out a free workshop here: bit.ly/2ELvSnM
This sounds like my boy. He's three. No advice anyone has given me works. He will starve himself too. It's so frustrating. It seems he eats fewer and fewer foods as time goes on. We need a miracle
Same as my son .he will turn 4 in November . We stayed in denial phase for quite long and eventually he was diagnosed with autism spectrum. Let me know if anything is helping you to get him talking . I want my son speaking . He is non verbal and he has behavioral issues too .

My son is three, he eats only things given by spoon, nothing on his own he is autistic , he swallows rice , doesn't chew doesn't bite things, hates chips, chocolates and icecream, it is difficult to go anywhere with him as I have to prepare food for him and. Carry it
Feeding challenges can be really challenging! Within my online courses I do cover this topic and more. Check out a free workshop www.marybarbera.com/toddler-ws
Omg my son's three and the same thing he wants to be feed by me and now we are really sticking to not feeding him hes hardly eating anything even things he usually eats he hardly touches now if he has to feed himself. Infact for nearly every meal he eats like one percent of it and then keeps asking for cookies 🤦 did your son improve with his eating?
My son is 8, he's on the spectrum. The only way he eats veges and fruits is pureed. He can't swallow them when they're whole, he gags and sometimes vomits. We've attributed this to sensory processing disorder. He doesn't like stew so it's just pasta/rice with cheese and light butter. Trying new foods is difficult so I don't insist a lot because the outcome is never good.
Mary, my daughter is 4yrs old and refuses ALL veggies, so I started cheating I mix frozen fruits and fresh veggies with 100% juice or yogurt and freezing it into yogurt pops or popsicles. It's the only way I have been able to get her to eat veggies and I have tried everything! We have also learned foods like green beans, bananas, breakfast oat meal in a bowl and more make her throw up (no gaging, no warning, it just comes back up in a matter of seconds) but mashed potatoes with corn mixed, Asian rice, and spaghetti O's dont! I don't really see a texture difference except on the bananas cause they are slimy when cut and she doesn't like anything to look like a large portions so we have to cut it. Any ideas?
That's great you have found some ways around it. When trying new things keeping pieces small or a texture that isn't as chewy certainly helps. I do talk about feeding more in my courses. You can check out a free workshop here bit.ly/2ELvSnM
OK. No offense but this Mary Barbera is actually full of crap. No feeding specialist or speech language specialist would EVER recommend sneaking food into a child with eating difficulties diet. In fact, minute one of workshops is handing you a paper bag and saying 'this has stuff in it, will you eat it?' It's very real to them and eating is scary so NEVER trick them. There are complex foods (toast), melting foods (jelly) There is way more to this than you think. This is not the website you should be visiting, in fact, it's more harm than good if you have a problem eater as opposed to a fussy eater. If it's an autistic child, this site will do your child more harm than good.

Hi! Thank you for the tips! Definitely will be trying with my son. My question is, how do I get him to try new foods? He will not even put food (not common to him) in his mouth. If you've ever had food go down the wrong way and realise how scary choking can be, you are closer to understanding. Eating is hard. Imagine how complicated it is to eat a piece of toast. Never 'sneak' food in and maybe talk to a dietician if he's not getting the right intake. My daughter has a gastro tube and it's such a relief. She gets a good diet and i'm not stressed. This is not an issue you should be youtubing.

Can you explain the importance of meals/snacks at the table? I have found highchair, booster seat, little table and chairs just does not work for my little one she enjoys the freedom when eating
It can help with picky eating issues + utensil use if she's sitting with you. That way, you can offer other foods along with reinforcing foods and help her learn how to use utensils and drink from a cup, etc. I'm not suggesting you confine her to a booster seat or high chair; she should be able to leave freely. However, it's MUCH easier to teach her necessary eating and drinking skills when eating/drinking only occurs at the table.

Any tips on transitioning a child to water? My brother is 10 and on the autism spectrum, has an extremely specific (and pretty unhealthy) diet and does NOT drink water. Ever. He wont even try it. He doesnt have issues drinking or eating physically. He just doesnt want to.
I would make sure the water is paired with things he likes to make the water being around positive. Ultimately the same tips can apply regardless of the reason.
My son was the same with water, but what has helped is to give him a special water bottle and add ice. But now it’s more on me for not enforcing the water & giving in to juice boxes and milk.

I’ve been struggling with his picky eating since he was 2 and nothing seems to help much. Right now he’s actually eating even less types of foods and refuses to try anything new. Obviously I’m trying to get him seen by the specialist unit at the hospital (I’m in the UK) but it’s hard to get an appointment and I can’t afford private care. I’ll try these tips, but do you have any other suggestions?

My daughter is on the spectrum she only wants peanut butter and jelly, berries and apples, and fries from McDonald’s only. She also had Chronic constipation so I need her to eat to keep her bowels moving.
I used to Nanny a child that was similar. Luckily they make a fiber supplements called Benefiber that has no flavor and doesn't thicken up. Some stores have a generic equivalent. I used to mix it in with his water or his milk or his juice or whatever it was that he was willing to drink at the time. He also liked yogurt and I would stir it in but I would let it sit for a little bit and stir again just to be sure it has dissolved. It really helped the little boy I used to watch. It's great stuff !
I wonder what is inside McDonald's food because my son only wants fries and chicken nuggets from there. If I make it at home he does not touch it. He was just diagnosed at 2 almost 3 years old.

Hey marry . It's been a while that m watching your videos . I have only one son who will turn for this November . We were not ready to accept that he is autistic. He was an extraordinary kid till the age of 2 and then started regressing. He could speak words but now he is non verbal where as since a while he has started uttering sounds . I try to feed him organic food as much as I can . Biggest issue is that he sticks to me 24/7 . He doesn't even allow me go rest room .he gets extremely stingy .
That sounds like our son when he was younger. He stopped talking after just beginning to say some words. The doctor said he will be doing good if he can go to regular school and make one friend. He had speech therapy all through grade school. He attended regular middle and high schools. Well, he’s now 22 and and not only does he have many friends, both male and female, but he holds three college degrees. He’s recently started his first job to earn money to continue his education to ultimately be a Paleontologist. My point being, your child just might surprise you and go beyond what some professionals may say. Don’t feel like this is where he will always be developmentally, because no one truly knows what the future holds. I wish you and child health and happiness.
Introduce your child to the texture of regular bananas. Have your child make their own banana dishes so they'll feel they have control over what they eat
Thank you for your videos, my son is little over 2, he is still refusing to eat solid or pureed food, he is on pediasure, i tried everything possible, but no luck. Im just worried the older he is getting. Ive seen professional help but again no luck. Im not sure what to do, im concerned if he is hydrated enough since he also is not drinking water. Any advice?
I cannot give individualized advice, however, I would check out my free workshops for toddlers here marybarbera.com/toddler . In my toddler courses I discuss feeding issues at length.
Dear mam my son is 2.6 years old. His all symptoms matches with autistic child.how to start with his speech therapy at home because we can't afford costly therapies outside
First is not responding to his name. Don't know how to play properly with toy like he throws all the toys. He put everything in his mouth. Smell everything and does not utter any word except kela for 🍌 that's it.and very hyperactive with very less attention and sitting span. He never try to communicate for his needs like water food anything like kids of same age do by pointing towards item.
I do have a book called the verbal behavior approach and all my weekly videos can be read as blogs at marybarbera. Com Just type the topic you want in the search bar.
I am an advocate for long term breastfeeding, but the weaning tips are similar to bottles and pacifiers. Although it is not as impactful, it still may be important to wean or schedule feedings for picky eaters.

Absolutely they can go hand in hand. I have a new book with a whole chapter on picky eating and many on increasing talking. Check it out here www.turnautismaround.com
@@marybarbera marry does it mean tht when my child starts eating his issues will be gone
You are very awesome 💖💖💖💖
Thank you so much 😀
Any tips on transitioning a child to water? My brother is 10 and on the autism spectrum, has an extremely specific (and pretty unhealthy) diet and does NOT drink water. Ever. He wont even try it. He doesnt have issues drinking or eating physically. He just doesnt want to.
I would make sure the water is paired with things he likes to make the water being around positive. Ultimately the same tips can apply regardless of the reason.
My son was the same with water, but what has helped is to give him a special water bottle and add ice. But now it’s more on me for not enforcing the water & giving in to juice boxes and milk.
Thanks for help,
Ma son is 2 years and 7 months with signes of autism and still drink milk with a sipp cup while hi is sleeping , how can chnge that , because he cry so mach and i know that hi want to drink even hi is not hungry
Great question! it sounds like my free workshop just for toddler parents would be helpful! I go into depth about feeding and removing sippy cups in my online courses: www.marybarbera.com/workshop
Thanks for the video!
Why is feeding issues usually coming together with speech issues?
Likely because they may both stem from physical motor issues
Hello! My son is already 11, diagnosed with dyspraxia at around 4 (he’s had speech therapy and psychomotricity for 4 years) and autism at 10.
Feeding is hard without knowing the child but google mary barbera keith williams for a podcast with him as he is a feeding expert.
@@marybarbera thank you so much 😊

That is a big challenge and often takes a lot of assessment!
My son is 3yrs old. He used to eat everything that I served him and now he doesn't anything except for milk and bread. I tried the NEMECHECK PROTOCOL on him for 2 mos. and now I noticed sudden loss of appetite . I am so worried about him not getting enough nutrients .
Doctor,my child can mostly tolerate hard and or crispy foods such as crackers, and chips..she only eats at times chicken for protein.her vitamins come from baby cereals and 1brand of baby food.most of the time she drinks milk..she would cry or be upset by just looking at foods..she wouldn't even try to taste them.she was initially diagnosed with ASD.
Yes! I had a client like this who I talk about in my courses and show video of his food transformation. Find out more about my courses here www.marybarbera.com/workshops

My daughter is on the spectrum she only wants peanut butter and jelly, berries and apples, and fries from McDonald’s only. She also had Chronic constipation so I need her to eat to keep her bowels moving.
yes for sure. Google mary barbera picky eating for a podcast on the topic
Have you had any luck since you posted this comment. My child is the Same . She’s 2 n 23 lbs
Same with my nephew who has autism 🍓 fish crackers cheddar hash brown from McDonald's bananas yogurt strawberry banana
Its really informative
But my daughter didn't take fruits how i introduce them to her she is now 6year old

That sounds challenging. My online courses can help. Go to www.marybarbera.com/workshops to sign up for a free workshop
My 4 year autistic kid only eats mashed bananas easily and nothing else without crying and running away, what can i do.
I have a whole chapter on what to do in my new book. Check it out at turnautismaround.com
Introduce your child to the texture of regular bananas. Have your child make their own banana dishes so they'll feel they have control over what they eat
@@RandomSkyeRoses . Thnx

Hi what are the syptoms u have observed in ur child my child is also showing some syptoms
Hi! Do you have books about all these! I learn easier.. I have 2 ASD children and I am also(didn't know it before just recently learned and I am 40).
I do have a book called the verbal behavior approach and all my weekly videos can be read as blogs at marybarbera. Com
Just type the topic you want in the search bar.
What about breastfed toddlers?
I am an advocate for long term breastfeeding, but the weaning tips are similar to bottles and pacifiers. Although it is not as impactful, it still may be important to wean or schedule feedings for picky eaters.
My child only wants to drink juice, how can I avoid that
Mixing water with the juice can help!
He only eats fruit he will chew up chips and stuff and spit them back out I have aspergers and we think he does too but he is to little for an accurate diagnosis
google mary barbera feeding for a whole podcast on the issue.
