As a diabetic I generally don’t crave sweets and actively try to avoid them, but sometimes there’s this new flavor I have just GOT to try and it all goes down hill. The problem is that sugar is literally in everything we consume. I cannot go to a grocery store and randomly grab something without finding sugar in it. Even the “sugar free” stuff is actually loaded with sugar and is unsafe for diabetics. It’s really sad and makes having a medical problem a lot more complicated than it should be
And if you live in the US, insulin costs you a ton of money
@@AaronChristopher869 oh I do and it does. Thankfully my insurance covers most of the cost and since we are still under pandemic conditions my copayment is temporarily waived. Just means I can save up enough money to cover the costs when it’s reinstated
Yeah it's criminal that you often cannot even choose, there simply is no brand of a product without sugar even though you can totally make it without any of it. My usual peanut butter brand disappeared - it only contained peanuts and a dash of salt. The "best" option now is 90% peanuts then sugar and palm oil. Why!
@everthing is cool Yup. It sounds extreme but it really is. Maybe it would sound less extreme if people realised gambling found its way into the hands of children through mobile phone games. They aren't ashamed of doing anything they are allowed to do.
I know this comment was a year ago. But I wanted to chime in... Don't go down those evil Isles!!! You can always try to make things homemade, that way, you're putting in what you want and don't want. And replacing sugar with pineapple, beetroot, carrot, etc... I know the feeling though, you see a new flavour, or limited edition and you have to try it (FOMO!). 1st September 2019 I quit sugar by just saying to my mom: “Hey mom, can you avoid buying candy for me this weekend” Mom: “Of course”
Next weekend I asked for the same thing, then I did it again, and again, and all of the sudden it was a norm that I didn’t eat candy and all of that unhealthy stuff. I started to look on the back of things like ketchup and realized that there were a looooot of sugar in it. So I stopped eating it, and I did the same for every other thing that had added sugar in it. Of course I didn’t avoid things like apples and grapes because they have sugar in it, because you want that sugar, your body *needs* sugar (The right type of sugar). I’m also kind of allergic to chocolate, if I eat just one single piece I can get a stomachache, throw up and things like that. So me not being able to eat chocolate has made this so much easier. Anyways, quitting sugar was one of the best things I’ve done in my life, it has made such a big difference in my life. If you have acne, quit sugar. I *had* pretty bad acne when I used to eat sugar, but when I quit, it nearly went away.
Yes I do carve some sweet things sometimes but if I do that I either resist it or eat like 3 sugar free candies, and thb its not that difficult to not eat sugar, just make sure you don’t have it available.

its honestly scary once you start to look around in a grocery store and notice the huge amounts of sugar everywhere, for example i went down the cereal aisle that had cereal on one side and to go snacks like cereal bars on the other side. it was all just a bunch of junk loaded with sugar that a lot of it they market to kids.
And holiday versions of the same cereal/treat bars are somehow even worse than normal grain-based foods.

okay, but it does not help me stick to that diet. finding something to blame is not helpful, finding a solution is.
Still, sugar is very important, but only in small amounts, like the ones we find on fruits. We really need to change our diet. Children should get used to eat low amounts of from the moment they start eating solid food.

Is there scientific evidence for "sour taste" satisfaction? Most of the time I do prefer sour more than sweet foods. Thanks!
Fermented foods, thats why we taste sour so well and like it. Was a big staple of our diet
mobilekillerass : good point. I once watched a video about how ‘drunk’ some insects get from fermented fruits. It was pretty funny watching them after they had eaten some.
Same! I crave for sour tastes.
That's interesting! I also wonder if being less sensitive to bitterness has an evolutionary advantage. I know bitterness is supposed to deter you from eating poisonous foods, but is it possible for someone to be too sensitive to it? Personally, I have a hard time eating fruits, especially berries, because they are usually a little bitter. My dad, on the other hand, can eat really bitter foods and not even notice it, so he ends up eating healthier. That makes me think it could be more advantageous to be less sensitive to bitterness in our modern society, so that fruits and vegetables would taste better.
@@orchdork775 I think it's way more dependent on what you used to eat as a baby/in your mother's womb than it is on genetics itself, alhtough that plays a role for certain chemicals. so it's mostly acquired taste
I love how u include history with science too!
Things this video covers:
-Why our brains like sugar
-The history of sugar
-How sugar is more prevalent than it should be
-The fact that scientists are wondering if it's a drug
Things not covered in this video:
-Whether sugar is a drug or not
-How to, in a practical manner, deal with sugar and it's effects
Basically yes it checks off on every thing we call a drug
So could sugars that are put into products that don't need it, such as peanut butter, be companies way of controlling our dopamine levels and how much we eat? For instance, eating a spoon full of peanut butter with added dextrose and then eating a spoon full of organic peanut butter without dextrose. The added dextrose interfering with our dopamine levels and wanting to go back for more of the dextrose peanut butter as to oppose the organic peanut butter, where we don't necessarily feel that stronger want to eat more. (Unless I've totally and utterly misunderstood how dopamine works)
Something like that, if you make it tastier, people buy it over other brands, specially if your product stimulates to eat more.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. They add sugar because it unconsciously drives us to consume more. I mean, we are aware of our desire to consume more but the motivation isn't an intellectual one, it's emotional/instinctual and just feels right, even though we know it's not, but we trust the feeling and do it anyway.
Sugar IS an organic substance. Why are people this dumb and proundly illiterate.
Yeah it does no good telling people to stop eating sugary foods, if these foods are made more tastier by the hour. You're still going to want more of it. "Don't eat anything that contains sugar!". Meh. Seriously?
@@sarahlund3872 I think it all depends on the sugar. Like with fruit, the fiber and process of breaking it down causes the sugar to release more slowly, so your insulin levels don't spike like they do with M&M's.
But, dang they know how to get us. American sugary stuff is so crazy, over-the-top sugary. I tried to eat a Ding-Dong after about a month of healthy eating and had to spit it out, it was so sweet. Like, it made my teeth hurt.
So yeah, they know what they're doing, and how folks need increased doses to get their fix, lol. I mean, I went through withdrawals and cravings when I cut refined sugar out. I guess it all comes down to finding a balance. It's just that short-term rewards almost always beat out long-term ones.

Do you realize that the entire country would collapse if we were to do that? First off, deporting all those people would cost millions, possibly billions. It would also cut down our population by a crazy amount, which means not enough taxes being paid and collapse.
Second, aside from that, the economic system would also collapse, over 97% of foods sold at an average supermarket contain some form of sugar. If we were to ban all those foods, the culinary market would be destroyed, and food being one of our main imports and exports, so would the country, and possibly the rest of the world.

As with almost anything, excessive consumption can be harmful. But also, the "self reward" mechanisms of the brain, from sex, to music, to laughing, all narrow down to a small number of chemical pathways. So, although comparing sugar to drugs can be a valid point, some of the stuff you see shared on social media is just misinformation (e.g. "scientists say giving sugar to babies it's EXACTLY THE SAME as injecting heroin into their eyeballs in a filthy roadside bathroom" or some nonsense like that...)

That's interesting. I wonder if my ADHD is actually a good thing. I get really bored even of sweet stuff. I also have a condition where I need to eat more salt, but I get bored of everything. I'm just not a huge fan of sweet stuff. Then again, when I did an elimination diet in high school, I was off of cane sugar for about a year, and afterwards, everything sugary tasted bad. Now I use more stuff with stevia as a sweetener, or just fruit sugars, because honestly, I don't know why people add sugar to fruit, if it's ripe, it doesn't need it. Although I do add a little maple to cooked fruit if I'm making a sauce or pie.
Yes, we humans thrive with variety.
You know it's not that hard to get off of sugar. I used to LOVE cake, cupcakes, cheesecake, cookies, muffins--you name it. However, my lactose intolerance grew as I got older and I had about a 50/50 chance of getting sick when eating pastries that contained milk. So I just made the decision to stop eating sweets. And after awhile, I just stopped craving sugar. All I needed was my raisin bran in the morning and I was good. Problem is I've had heavy sugary stuff since and now it taste too sweet to me to the point where even the idea of eating it is off-putting. Not sure what that means.
JazzyNym Yea. Just try and ignore its existence. I used to love eating artificial sugar, but then the packets got over. And I never crave for it now lol. There is still another box up there but I never go to it.
That's a good problem to have. :) I too have gotten into a diet where the food isn't over-flavored, and once your tastebuds stop getting overloaded every meal, even the healthiest of foods taste good.
Minty
The problem is you LITERALLY need Sugar to function. You can Reduce the amount of sugar you intake by a HUGE amount but you can never cut it out completely. For example that Raisin Bran you mention has fruit and carbs in it. Raisins are dried fruit and fruit is a large source of NATURAL SUGAR. Also all carbohydrates, such as CEREALS are basically COMPLEX SUGARS which are broken down by the body during digestion into simpler sugars.
JazzyNym Out of curiosity, I wonder how much sugar is in your raisin bran. A lot of brands have more sugar in them than other cereals to try and make up for the blandness in bran.
I've almost completely cut sugar out of my diet.
Wade Wilson you would be dead then if you completely removed sugar
Wade Wilson if I eat sugar, even the small amounts like in peppers carrots and tomatoes, I have absolutely severe symptoms. I get incredibly depressed, intense OCD, sucisdal tendencies, very giddy and manic behavior, and paralysis. Yea, I don't eat sugar.
I said almost.
Don't cut it completely mate, you need sugar (glucose for example) to have energy.
who said cavemen were healthy?
I was so addicted to raisins once. They were everywhere and they just kept pushing it on me you know. Peer pressure man.
Sugar is worse than weed in a lot of ways... but weed is somehow a scheduled 1 drug (the worse kind of drug ever, like Meth and Heroin). But I guess sugar should be a schedule 1 drug now, because that'll totally solve the problem of obesity, like how the drug war solved drug addiction
Tenebricus Arcanus Isn't meth actualy schedule 2?
how about making it a controlled substance like alcohol?
Dommy521 Controlling substances isn’t really the way to solve addiction. By controlling substances, supply and demand will come back to bite you. If you imprison addicts, literally nothing will happen other than the fact you will be punishing thousands of people for something that shouldn’t be a crime. To help with addiction, people should be educating children early on about the dangers of addiction and we should be giving genuine therapy to people who are addicted.
When it comes to sugar, I don’t think there is much of a clear answer at the moment. You can’t really start diagnosing people with an addiction to a substance that is literally everywhere, and expect them to be able to avoid it.. It may even be a matter of controlling substances or stepping back and acknowledging the fact that the sugar industry is living off myths about health, but it’s an incredibly sticky situation at the moment (I mean, I just mentioned how substance control doesn’t solve problems but now I’m acknowledging it as a a solution? What kind of lunatic am I?)
@Dommy521
Controlling substances never solves any problem. Rembember the alcohol prohibition and the boom of organised crime?

The bacteria can break cellulose down and produce short-chain fatty acides wich can be absorbed. :)
Sure *:)*
Salads are usually topped by salad dressing. Unfortunately, dressings usually have too much added oils to be healthful. Some say extra virgin olive oil is the exception, but most commercial dressings do not use it. The fat free salad dressings usually have sugar. Sometimes a lot. If you make your own dressing, you can control the ingredients, and the percentage of sweeteners and fats. I like to use healthy fats from whole foods, like avocado.
I feel like both could get boring.
You know what I could eat for weeks in a row? Pasta.

It's after dinosaurs...duh
Im not a native English speaker, I come from the Netherlands, it's difficult for me to understand everything.
;
A.D. stands for Anno Domini, which is Latin for "year of our Lord," and it means the number of years since the birth of Jesus Christ.
It stands for Anno Domini
The terms anno "Domini [a] (AD) and before Christ (BC) are used to label or number years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The term anno Domini is Medieval Latin, which means in the year of the Lord but is often translated as in the year of our Lord."
I'm absolutely addicted to sugar, and I love it
Until your bones get incredibly weak, cavities, acne, excessive body hair and fat, joint pain, and light sensitivity.

people say mixing drugs and alcohol is bad alcohol is a drug itself and it's the most dangerous drug on the market
james hannigan Heart disease is the number one killer and sugar is linked directly to it. We’ve known fat has nothing to do with heart disease for 50 years now. Sugar is much more deadly than alcohol. It just kills slower.
@@MrTaylork1 both are killers
This might be painfully obvious, as someone who's eaten waaaay to much sugar growing up, I can say that if you eat nothing but candy for maybe 2-3 days, the dopamine levels only lowers, I personally got nauseous.
Awesome video as always, but that outro, tho
ANOTHA ONE
I'm sick and tired of sweet things, explain that
hellshadowx Had too much candy as a child? Had it when you had a disease like chicken pox that absolutely sucks? Ate it everyday as a routine?
Blessed to be a sweet supertaster. A little goes a long way and yes, I can get tired of sugar if it's not mixed or buried in other flavors. Now a salty starch... (Another one!... And other one!)

Ok. So the eagle downing the pixie stick was pretty funny.
I'll think I'll grab something sugarly now.

That Scarface edit with the powder donuts was great lol
