I thought I would add some things about where I am with gas engines. I purchased a DLE side exhaust 20cc gas engine from one of the online USA RC dealers and built a test stand for it to teach myself about them. I was super impressed with what great engines these DLE ones are. Very simple to get set up and easy to start and run. I ordered a huge Phoenix J-3 cub (7-foot wingspan) to install this engine into. It turned out that this engine would not fit inside the cowl of the cub and so I ordered the same engine with the rear exhaust which will fit fine. Unfortunately, I decided to order this engine from a seller in China so it won't arrive until sometime in May. But, since I live in Alaska I can't get back to any flying until then anyway. I saved a considerable amount of $$$ by doing this though. I started into RC stuff about three years ago with electric, but now I'm interested in doing gas and glow engines. One more comment: Just so I could learn more I purchased a 40cc twin engine made by a different company mainly to get a comparison of the manufacturers. The other company is called RCGF and they have also been around for quite some time. I'm looking forward to running that engine, so will build another test stand for it to try it out.

Great beginners overview! Wrt cost efficiency, I'm not sure, but I believe the cheaper one gal. Gas will last significantly longer (more flight time) than a one gal. Glow fuel for the same size model.
I have a DLE-20 (side exhaust) in a Seagull P-47 kit I built and so far she's running very good. Something to note about the DLE-20 side exhaust (and this may be true for others) is you can rotate the carb 180 degrees to give you two options for where you want the throttle and choke linkage and the access direction for the L/H needle valves. I mounted mine inverted and didn't want the holes in my cowl to access the needle on the top.

Very cool. That Cub is great. I’ll probably use whatever premium they have up at the local station, and ill be looking into the oil, they recommend ashless, I have been curious about the synthetic also.
Great choice I'm going with the DLE engine they are very high quality And will last for years Couple of suggestions as I am a long time gas engine fire and engine mechanic You're 1st Mix of fuel You really should run a little more oil I recommend 4 oz of oil to 3 qt of high octane non ethanol gasoline This gives you a break in mixture of 24 to 1 After you have used up those 3 qt you can switch to the 32 to 1 As the engine will be broken in enough for the lesser amount of oil I highly recommend the following procedure to break in your new engine 2 and a 1/2 turns out on the I speed needle which is closest to the choke In one and a 1/2 turns on the low speed needle closer to the cylinder When you start the engine let it run for approximately 30 seconds then shut it off Let the engine cool Your next heat cycle let the engine run for approximately one minute then let it cool again You want to do this procedure at approximately 1/4 throttle Do this heat cycle process slowly increasing your times by 30 seconds each time Trust me when I tell you this will give you the longest lasting best running engine you can achieve Once you reach approximately 3 minutes per run time then you can start increasing the throttle up-and-down as your heat cycle process is Done You can now vary the throttle up-and-down With the engine still running rich Once you're 3 qt of 24 to 1 fuel mix is done you can start slightly turning each needle valve in an 8th of a turn at a time until you reach a smoother idol and a little more RPM on the top end but you do not want it to completely too cycle at full throttle After a couple of tanks of the 32 to 1 mixture the engine is completely ready for flight testing The rest of the breaking in can be done in the air but do not overlean the engine It should be just a touch rich at take off and it will find a happy place under load in the air Hope this helps and if you have any other questions please reach out to me Matt

That's awesome! I've got 5 gas engines and probably 20 glow engines! I've got some with ignition and 3 that are gas glow so you don't need the electric ignition stuff! They all run pretty good with the correct tuning to your climate! Good luck and ask me anything you want to!
Hey James. Great to see you doing this. I too am a glow engine guy but am interested in learning about gas. You didn’t talk about what engine mount you plan to use. It is my understanding gas engines require vibration isolation. Maybe update us on this in the next video. Thanks.

Good feedback. In the “olden days” radio equipment was much more sensitive to vibrations. Might be less of an issue today. James, do of the DLE instructions give direction on mounting the engine?
They don’t say much, just that the engine “should be installed on an appropriate shock absorber “.. theres not the detailed instructions as with an OS. You can search and get a pdf of the instructions online if curious about what they provide. They are kinda weird because they have setup instructions mixed in with the safety tips, so at least for me, I find them a little odd to read through
Ill check that out. I use a Klotz Benol to add to my glow fuel mixture. I did order some Briggs and Stratton ashless oil recommended in the manual for the break in. I’ll check out your recommendation also. Thanks
Hi, sorry I don’t know off hand. I found the carburetor for my 46ax2 by searching online and on ebay. It took some searching. And the get pricey. You may find that a new carburetor may be close in price or at least expensive enough to consider just a new engine. Its a shame that the parts are expensive.
You might try Amain Hobbies. I they might have it. I did a lot of research on O.S. carbs and learned a heckuva lot. I ordered a carb from these guys but it was gonna take forever to get here. I found the same one up on eBay that was even cheaper and I got it right away.

Thanks, and yes, gas with the added oil is significantly cheaper than glow and I believe the gas is more efficient also. But still like the glow also.

Ive had very good luck with 3 ngh gas engines. Cheaper than new os glow engine. Have a robinhood 80 with a dle 20 re. Great engine!!!

And, i only run non ethanol with stihl synthetic oil. Still have my sig 1/4 cub with a zenoah g38 ive had for 20 years.

I have only ever used normal mounts same as glow for my 20cc motors. Above 20 and they are usually stand offs,

Thats what I have noticed, at 30 and bigger the mount is on standoffs directly to the engine.

Main thing to remember is the fuel lines and the stopper in your tank must be changed from the glow fuel to the gas kind!
