Love it. Many years ago, when Pentangle were in the charts, and jazz-folk wasn't a joke genre. I heard a band play this as an encore in my local folk club. Hearing a room full of pissed folkies trying to clap along in 7/8 is an experience I shall never be able to (or want to) forget.
It is a 5/4 guys. 7/8 is a typical folklore dance from Bulgaria called Rachenitsa (Ръченица). Have a look - it is interesting. I am from bulgaria :) But anyone of you knows which jon Lord concert this video is taken from?
This is just freaking AWESOME. When we talk of the keyboard gods of yesteryear, inevitably Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson will be at the top of the list - as they should be. But Mr. Lord absolutely belongs up there in that pantheon (and so does Rod Argent, for that matter). Jon was as great an artist on the B3 as has ever lived. So many of the wonderful musicians who composed the soundtracks to our lives have left us. Thankfully, their contributions live on in their recordings and videos like this, and we are the richer for it.
I recall some 15 years ago standing immediately behind Jon Lord in a queue in the Henley on Thames Waitrose, he living in that town. It was a little tempting to gently hum Smoke on the Water, but I wisely decided I couldn't do that to such a genial rock god. I also got to see him play in my then local pub, The Crooked Billet at Stoke Row. He performed in an evening of music and spoken word, with raconteur Sir John Mortimer and the actress, Joanna David. An amazing evening from such a collection of talent.
Hermosa cantata de uno de las grandes musicos del Barroco en particular y de la musica universal J.S.Bach,interpretada magistralmente por Steve Howe, gracias, saludos desde Argentina

Say Dave were alive, he would be jealous at first but later follow him to the pub. Wish I could be there to follow them both. Such talents and such genius...
There’s several much more sophisticated versions than this around, but for me this captures the essence/mood of the song as well as any of them. Lovely job.
I happened to meet Jon Lord after a Whitesnake concert in 1979. We chatted briefly and I got his autograph and a handshake. He was a brilliant musician and a very nice guy.
Have you ever had one of those "D'oh!" moments? I just had one because even though I've been listening and grooving to this song for about 60 years, it was just now that I realized that the title was a play on the term "Square Dance". I just always assumed that since it was in 7/4, it was referring to something other than four.
One of the masterpieces, thogether with Take Five (in 5/4), Take Ten (in 10/8) and Blue Rondo a La Turk (in 9/8), and this one is in 7/8. These all were created, just after a visit for a two days tour to Ankara/Turkey, in 1959. There was a Turkish jazz band in the same club, led by a very talented young musician called Suheyl Denizci. Mr. Brubeck asked Mr. Denizci if he could show some examples of Turkish music. Next night he brought a friend of his, who was a very expert local musician and a student in the famous Berklee Music school, which made him a very good answer to Mr. Brubeck and his bandmates. They got the opportunity to study what they asked for, with this young guy, whose name was Yavuz Özüstün. After this mini tour, they created these pieces, all in Turkish time characer and especially Take Five became a hit in college radios, and reached 25 in Billboard Top 100 list. Take Five is still the most successful and most covered jazz piece off all times. My mom and dad were in the audience in the club and lucky enough to get autographs of all members on a piece of paper, which is one of the most precious items on my wall. Later, I was lucky enough to be a member in Mr. Denizci's band and a student for Mr. Özüstün which enabled me to verify the story of Take Five and others. I hope they all rest in peace.

Isn't it 7/4?
7/8 ?
@@willyplaysbass it's like take 5 (5/4) with 2 more beats, so I'd go for 7/4
Technically, the score says it is 7/4. But it is the same idea.

True, his full name is "Jon, Lord of the Hammond"
The Master of the B3!
Very true,- except you´ve got the order wrong,
It´s Jon Lord,- and then it´s Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Rod Ardent and Don Airey......
@@ulfdanielsen6009 That works for me!
Unsquare dance is such a clever piece of music. Its great to see it respected by fellow musicians.

Quel swing! Quel sens du rythme. Quel génial instrumentiste. Totalement irremplaçable. Qu'est-ce qu'on est triste sans Jon.
That Hammond part was so good

Hi Gordon how are you doing 😊
Used in the re-make of “The Thomas Crown Affair”. Many men with bowler hats.
Amazing, I love so much!
Bless ya Jon. Him and Hensley are the reason I had to have at least 1 Hammond around at all times.
