    Taking travel sickness pills helps, as does drinking a cap full of milk of magnesia, or even ginger, especially candied ginger.
    But the reason you get sick in VR is your body noticing a disconnect between your body and your eyes and assumes you're being poisoned, so it trying you to vomit up the poison.

    Two other tips:
    1. In the sim, lock view to horizon vs default which is locked to the car. The latter is best for monitors, but a total puke trigger in VR.
    2. Setup a fan to blow at your face while in VR. The oncoming wind gives the brain some sense of forward movement to accompany the visuals and thus quell the disorientation that leads to nausea.

      At work right now, not at my gaming pc. I think it's under the Video or View. It's a check box to "Lock onboard camera to horizon"

      The horizon lock in both rotation axises helped me. I did some testing the first two days and had mega proglems but on the third day I locked both and the everything just went away. Gs made me feel funny but never to the level of nausea so I did a race (iRacing) then another and still nothing. Next weekend I did an endurance race with no problem.

      Literally did the same on PC2, got in a formula car, drove around long beach and since i'm using a controller until tomorrow when i get my wheel, i kept having to reverse or full throttle spin. Best bit was when i crashed or went round a really tight hairpin with a wall right next to me. Thinking of it now makes me sick.

    I got my Reverb G2 a few days ago and hopped into an F1 car immediately. Within a few seconds, I was super nauseous. It was a horrible experience. I had to step back and take a different approach. A few days later I was able to finish many laps without dying. You have to be methodical about how you start. Take it easy and don't kill yourself. Race on tracks that don't have a lot of elevation changes. Avoid looking around the track. When you are coming to a corner, look early to the apex and focus on that to limit horizontal movements that cause sickness. Make sure you get high framerates also, lower your settings on everything to get there.

    Thanks for the tips mate. I got the rift last weekend and overdid it slightly :D Must have used it around 6+ hrs on saturday and again on sunday. Not constantly, but throughout the day. Only did a few laps on pcars 2 and assetto corsa. Assetto corsa turned my stomach and then that was the beginning of me having a 2 day long motion sickness hangover.
    Honestly, I just feel ok again now today. It's been 2 days of feeling really crappy. Kinda like I'd gotten off a boat after a long journey.
    I hope I haven't done any damage as anytime I even thought about VR in the last 2 days I felt sick. I'm hoping that I'll feel up to trying it again at the weekend and that things might be better this time.
    I ordered ginger tablets, Sea-bands and got some Dramamine, so I am at least more prepared this time :D

    Good tips for those getting started in VR Dan! When I've tried VR, as long as it was a constant 90fps, I was fine. A little green every once and a while, but I haven't used it consistently. I actually get nausea from trying to watch vr videos. It's like my eyes can't figure out where to look. So I just listened to the audio in this vid and turned the video portion off.

      @CryptikGaming 6 років тому

      hello there. i dont know if helps. but maybe your problem is tryin to look everywhere.. or maybe somewhere u shouldnt, as dan said in the video. dont look around to much.
      watching VR videos, what u can try do is, get your yes completly fixed in somewhere and doenst matther where the video is going to.... so, there is a car in front. u look at it and only at it until he gets overtaked and desapears from screen. than u shift your look into a apex of a turn if no other car in front. something in the track it self and not outside of it. if nothing call attention to u in track look at the grandstands. look at the farest thing u can see and try follow it with your eyes until he gets off screen. try to avoid the screen shake from the guy driving, u do that with fixing your eyes where u want to and not where the video is looking at. its clear enough to make myself explained? hard when not my native language. :)

    • @CryptikGaming
      @CryptikGaming 6 років тому

      i could try explain why u get sick watching Vr. if u look into dan's Racing. he doenst look at Apexs ( he is looking into the turn it self. and he looks afters he is already on them.) so, that makes that weird feeling of the car is already turning but the image is "delayed".. im not here to publish myself by anymeans. but i have been told that i dont look to be using VR in my races, because no weird motions. when in a braking zone for a turn. im looking at the apex long ago and as soon as i know i will do that apex my head is already looking for the next one. that way the aggressive shakiness and fast movements are not there.. less sickness.

      d3vil plays So you know you made me go look at your videos right?? Lol. Looks like you started using VR about 2 months ago (at least that's when your first VR video popped up. I checked them all and saw one comment. Guy asked you if you are using Oculus. Didn't see the comment you mentioned above but maybe I missed it lol. Yours look very similar to mine in the shakiness to be honest and why did you turn the hands off on the last three? That really makes me feel out of my element if the hands are gone. Anyways, I'm just busting your balls, but you got a new sub out of the deal...I'll be watching ;) See you on the track and happy racing!

    • @CryptikGaming
      @CryptikGaming 6 років тому

      Dan's Racing & Simulations hello there. Well I never said it was a comment.. I got real friends that watched and told me it. But we are not similar. May look like. I was not saying u were wrong. People got different ways to feel. U probably will wait a long time each time I'm in the mood to upload something lol. With 20 hours for a upload I don't do it very often :) and sorry if I made myself wrong about it. the shackiness u think is from the car.. and im talking about the head ... u dont do it a lot for sure. have seen worse. but thats not something anyone can fix... its the way it is.. being with oculus for 2 months or 2 years doenst mean a lot. it all depends.. i cant explain u what i want to say. but i will try with a example.. go check empty box Vr videos. he shakes is head a lot..a LOTTTTTT... if u go look at it. and u dont feel that sensation, its maybe because u can take that easier than others like me and the guy on top. :)
      there is another guy Ts something. he doenst shake his head.. and well easy to watch.. thats my point.

    Don’t try Dirt Rally on your second time using the oculus like I did :) Made it to the 4th corner and had to do an emergency stop! The bumps, turns, snow effects and terrain elevation didn’t go well... Fired up PC2 with a flat Racing track and a much slower car and managed to do multiple laps at a slow pace but got used to it. Gonna try again on a full stomach later on to see if it has any affects!

    I have tested VR goggles once, but the problem I ran into that I wanted to touch everything around me. There was a couch behind me in the demo and I had to try really hard not to try to sit on it, because I was so overwhelmed by the experience. 😄
    If I had to describe the experience to someone, VR looks like reality but with worse graphics. Unfortunately the test was quite brief, so I don't really know if I'm prone to getting sick, but I will definitely get VR goggles at some point as they have became quite affordable.

    Great tips! Also, close your eyes when crashing or spinning. When you get more used to VR you can keep eyes open during spins but look into the distance at a focul point until spin stops. And, if you can, add some transducers (buttkickers with simvibe or whatever) under your seat to mimick bumps and movements. Lastly as others have mentioned, a fan or 2 facing you.

    I didn't get sick much when I started in VR (although almost insta-barfed when I had my first head on with a wall!), but the one thing that you didn't mention, that I found was getting real movement for which there was no explanation in VR - that was using an office chair that can rotate, and it's slight movements when turning were making me quite ill.
    Short term try a dining chair (I managed to get a waiting room chair from work which does the job) .. long term goal is a racing seat equipped sim rig ;-)

    I've got a Rift and a G920 paired with a DIY Ricmotech RS1 rig. My first time was actually completely void of sickness at all; was playing AC, driving a '15 Mustang GT, and on a big wide open track that had more long straightaways than corners. I thought I was in the clear. Second night, decide to drop myself in an FD RX7 Time Attack and check out Mt. Akina......and....started feeling sick inside of two minutes. Literally had to close my eyes or I was going to puke all over my setup.

    Update to say I have been using all these tips (including RexRaser65's tip about locking the horizon, and my own trick of eating ginger biscuits). VR games were always hit and miss for me. First time I tried a racing sim in VR I knew it wasn't for me and I would have to stick to milder games. This video made me think it was possible to get used to it. I started driving around Charlotte Speedway in a Kia very slowly. Now I can do 10 laps at full speed around Okayama in a Mazda and I am fine, even when it gets sideways. Each day I do a few more laps than before. So far so good.

    The only time I've ever felt queasy in VR is if framerates were low (usually caused by a bad update or poor optimisation), and mismatched head movements, usually when head camera movement is attached to a 3D body like in Alien Isolation or non-VR skyrim, so the camera moves with the character's animation and not your head movement. Both fixed by tweaking settings, usually.
    Also, if you know you're about to crash/lose control, close your eyes, and when you're not, try to keep your head steady.
    Fun fact: At the root of all this, your body is basically noticing that the movement you see doesn't match what you feel. In the wild, the most likely reason for this is that you've eaten something toxic, so your body tries to eject it.

    There was only one thing I needed to stop getting nauseous in VR... BEER!
    Seriously. I couldn't complete more than one lap without getting ill when I first got it. I lay down on the couch for a while and browsed the net for some answers. Someone mentioned having a couple of beers beforehand. It was a Friday, so I had 2 or 3 bottles of beer then put the headset back on and went for a spin. I spent the next 4 hours racing online and never had a hint of illness.

    Thanks a lot man. You saved my vr life. I started with a lap at 10mph focusing in the panel of the car and make the curves almost stopping the car and slowly started to look the road moving and when the sickness started to come I go back to focus on the car panel and was doing so until I observe that in the straights I was ok, even accelerating the car.
    But make curves was still a problem and had to almost stop the car, but the car panel was there to save me from motion and was following your advices to not look to the sides and believe me, I think after 30 minutes of this discipline, trying to look at the road time after time, I was capable to do a five lap race. The circuit I chose to do this was Monza, starting with a gt85 and then a Porsche carreta gt and make the race with a Ferrari 812 super fast, all in assetto corsa. Came here to thank you and share this experience with you and your followers.

    For those wondering if maybe I need to upgrade my computer screen or video card. I have a GeForce RTX 2080 TI 11GB OC from ROG and a 144Hz Monitor. I was told in the past to 'just upgrade your video card and monitor'. Its not the computer parts. its just shaky movement that makes me sick. I can never play FPS games because of that.

    No mater what I do I can’t use VR. I race real cars and also instruct students, they also get me sick at times. I feel I have a good ability to sense the cars attitude and when it’s loose or tight from the seat of my pants. It’s what makes me good in the real car, but hurts when trying VR. I also don’t want VR to hurt my real racing, I would rather keep this heightened sense on the real track than screw it up.

    ive heard pushing through it makes it worse, means you will always in future associate feeling sick with vr. to the point you might suddenly feel a bit nauseous just at the thought of putting the headset on alone. best to do 5-10 minute bursts and stop at the slightest sign of nausea. the thing about it is it keeps growing. you stop feeling not to bad, watch some tv, it still keeps slowly getting worse and worse, even though you stoppped.,. and can even make you feel off all day the next day, so in those first few weeks/ months. its best to just do lots of regular very very short and cautious bursts. and slowly work your way upwards. first starting with the safest vr experiences. with the least movement etc. also, experiment to see what works best for you, i find if im standing up it helps alot, in all games. except of course racing., but for some reason ive never had a problem with those. i guess its having a real wheel etc in the same place irl as in game so you feel like you are there/ in control. and dont move your head around much either.
    i still cant do snap turning, the mere thought of it terrifies me. i can play onward or pavlov with free locomotion for hours 100% fine, but one or two snap turns and im done, lol

      @@Stewbob112 yeah, its a horrible feeling. you will get past it though, i havnt felt sick at all playing vr in a while. admittedly i only play a couple times a week tops these days. and in short sessions. demoed it to some mates a few weeks ago and they loved it (robo recall mostly, and richies plank experience with real plank) and none of them mentioned feeling sick. my brother keeps complaining games dont have turn/rotate with analogue stick, lol. he must have a strong stomach. i still cant handle that one. i have to turn irl, or with snap turning, or my eyes closed. im not even going to bother trying to get used to that one. im 100% fine with free locomotion and dirt rally/racing games etc these days. so thats good enough for me. but artificial turning? no way, lol.

    Another thing to help is Ginger ... Whether it be a can of ginger Beer or a Ginger Biscuit or suck on a bit or crystalised Ginger . It's a natural combatant against Nausea. Be Careful with VR If you have a perforated eardrum or any other kind of inner ear problems as this can be a big downer. I Had to sell my rift as my rig couldn't keep up the 90fps well enough to keep me smiling not vomiting . I used to get real bad bouts & the Nausea would last up to 48 hrs ! , that was really horrible .... For me, I own an Oculus Rift and a Thrustmaster T300RS Alcantara. The problem is, the Oculus's visuals don't look very good from out of the cockpit but everything on the interior looks great. This alone makes me feel sick. Another problem I have is that in Assetto Corsa, (because I'm so short, 5.1") I'm always below the driver and also can't see the track very well unless I my seats all the way up and I'm not leaning back. Doing that for long periods of time is very uncomfortable especially in long races such as endurance races which are also, sadly my favorite to compete in.

    I just don't understand how people get motion sick when playing on a decent PC with a properly set up Rift! When I first got my mobile VR I broke out in sweat within minutes. As time progressed, minutes turned into hours. Now, I don't sweat anymore, instead, I get a headache and want to vomit. So, I dropped mobile VR completely (literally packed it away last night) as my phone (LG G2) isn't providing the proper experience as my friends Samsung Galaxy S7 did (I never got sick while using her S7). However, when I played Space Pirate Trainer on the HTC Vive however, I was solid! The experience was great! In fact, I was ducking and dodging laser beams as if I played it before.

    To continue a conversation we’ve had from another video: the 90fps is confusing me a little. Because I can see how you can measure that on your monitor/tv but not in the headset. The NVIDEA settings panel is only measuring FPS on screen but not in the headset. Have I got this wrong? UPDATE: I ran a couple of laps before I got nauseous, this tip is gold. Although I want to jump straight back in, I’ll leave it an hour or so, thanks Dan

    • @DanDiMaggio
      @DanDiMaggio  6 років тому

      Jamiedh303 Awesome! Yeah just give it some time and take it slow. You'll be running full races before you know it. The image shown on screen is just a direct mirror of the image in the rift so the counter on screen should be a direct reflection of the fps you are getting inside the headset. Your computer is only actually rendering the image inside the headset. The image on screen is more like a "video" or a "live replay" kind of... well you get the idea. The fps you see on screen is what you are getting inside the rift, or should be theoretically.

      ネギ&FISH Hmmm, that is strange. I've not heard of that happening. Do you wear glasses or contacts normally? You're headset may be too tight or too loose causing you to have to strain your eyes to see the image. That might be making your eyes tired. I get better results the tighter I have the headset on. Also consider using eye drops so your eyes don't dry out. That can strain them as well.

      BCJM76 VR & MR are typically at a 1 to 1 FOV meaning they will be the perfect realistic FOV right out of the box. You can however adjust your seat/head position to make sure your mirrors and things are to your liking but I wouldn't make any FOV adjustments.
