Ugh, I want these but the Neca QC being a nightmare has me too scared to waste the cash.
Despite the fact that these figures look very good, overall the QC on them are trash so I'll be skipping them, unfortunate since I really was looking forward to these.
Same. I’ve come across them a few times, but couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger due to the QC issues.
Easy pass for me as well. I’ll stick with Storm Collectibles.
Sadly I had some QC issues with a Jason and Predator figure from NECA last year. Within days of minimal posing I had parts of them break. For fr price point it’s ridiculous. Those were the last NECA figures of got. It’s cool to get these figures, but if the quality is junk it’s almost not with them existing
They really need to revise that hip setup. My ultimate Lost Predator suffered from the same stuck hips issue since they seem to be implementing the same system on newer Predator figures as well.
Huh, I had the exact same problem on my Lost Predator too. I feel like on mine that the opening through the crotch was like too tight for the female hip end to go through and be able to move. Also, the male end of the hips didn't want to stay plugged into the female end. I ended up widening the hole in the crotch piece, and sacrificed a thermal vision Predator and took the hip discs from that and replaced the Lost Pred's hip discs with those.
The creaking every time you move them is giving me anxiety. They sound like they’re about to fall to bits
These are very beautiful figures. They don’t hold you down to one property and they are pretty timeless.
These figures are nostalgic for me, I had the Galoob figures from the 80s. Disappointing to see QC issues. Thanks for the review!

I am a fan of the Phantom. I normally free my action figures from their plastic prison. I may buy the Phantom and leave him in the box.
I'm hearing more and more people start to finally see the problems with NECA, whether it's just more people who are posting on social media and in vids or the QC is it getting that much worse in general on multiple lines (or poor engineering).

I've bought so many predator figures from them that are perfect. HOWEVER I've bought other stuff from them that has broken easily. Neca uses cheaper plastic just like McFarlane

Why does NECA get a pass on QC.... Mattel with classics and super 7 with ultimates have so much hate for QC issues, but I don't hear the outrage for NECA's figures across all their lines.
RetroBlasting has done videos about NECA's QC issues. The NECA defence force went after him for it of course. There seem to be a lot of people who are ok with it.
Super 7 is twice as expensive as Neca, so we can be more exigent on those
Price for one. Plus Mattel and Super 7 barely even paint their figures. They won’t have the same issues, but they have issues too. Also, eventhough Super7 doesn’t paint the joints, the plastic color doesn’t match.
People do complain but the cult of Randy goes into attack mode when you do. If Neca doesn’t block you first.

It would have been nice to do a size comparison with other action figures to see how well they scale with other comic book or cartoon characters.

I'm getting these Toy Bro. Great review. I don't mind the chipping joints. It's not a big deal for me as long as the joints don't break like older NECA figures.
luckily found them just randomly, they look great on my display.they do move well for neca figures. but bought them for nostalgia anyway, though i was too young to remember most scenes , I'm just glad to have TMNT, Defenders, Real Ghostbusters in good figure forms.
I guess taking them apart is the secret to getting that left leg to move. I soaked these things for quite a while and hit them with the heater but that leg was still resistant. I'll give this a shot! That said, I love this line! I do wish they had given phantom a holster and pistols, I realize it's not part of the show, but he had them - and the striped trunks - in some of the DotE comics.
Now we need Green Hornet, Kato, and the Shadow!

Man these figures look amazing, but it seems the QC issues are across the line. Every review, or post I’ve seen has had issues with joints bad for even neca’s standard. I really hope the fix this in the future, because this superhero-buck they’ve sculpted should be a standard and used for as many characters as they can. But they’ve got to address the plastic problem they’ve had, beyond just social media posts about heating your figs.
Got mine today. So he was an epic effort of systemically heating and loosening joints. I put him in a pan of boiling water two times right out of the package. Worked for most articulation. His tornado waist was an issue and the left boot but got those. Then the 360-degree bicep swivel was next.
Ultimately the most problematic was the left leg at the crotch. Mine would not kick forward 100 percent. Going out was okay. I hit it with a hair dryer but ultimately resorted to the method in the video. It is still stiffer than the right leg but works better. I do not have thigh swivel in either leg, though. This is the last part I can't figure out. Heated them with hair dryer as well but can't get top of thighs to swivel on the ball joint. I may just leave that alone or try to find some lubricant.
Only Neca figs I've never had trouble with is the 89 TMNT movie figs, cept for pegs coming off of flat hand. U can squeeze back in so no problem

I don’t see why NECA won’t just use a ball-hip joint like most companies do now. It would easily solve the leg issue that plagues so many of their lines.

If its anything like mine... the peg isn’t the issue on Flash’s toes. It is the glossy paint. I guess they were put together wet because the toe pieces on both Flashs I have examined are completely stuck to the foot. Removing the peg didn’t help. Worst part is the the paint seems to be stronger than the actual plastic it sits on.... so instead of getting it to split apart using the usual methods, the plastic just tears away from it. One of my Flash’s toes were already split inside the box. I guess somebody at the factory tried to push them down for boxing it and just split them off.
Great and honest review btw! These are by far the worst QC experience I have ever had with NECA stuff (and thats saying a lot since I have had more problems with them than literally any other toy company). It is such a shame because the figures look great. I am concerned that the QC is just so bad on these that they aren’t going to do well and we may not get more. Which sucks since I do want more... but NECA does deserve the backlash on these. Only problem is they have shown zero signs of ever addressing this stuff.
Bingo. Yeah the painted toes are a huge problem with Flash. The plastic just wants to tear away as if the paint is somehow stronger than plastic. It sucks because I really do love the way these look but they shouldn't be a challenge to move around like this. I was hoping I'd get lucky with my batch and they'd be fine, but here we are.
@@ToyBro - I honestly don’t think there is anybody that is getting lucky on them. You either break them or you spend time treating them majorly first... but I doubt anybody is getting ones completely sans joint issues right out of the box.

I really wanted these but the articulation issues are what prevented me from getting the first batch and will also do so on this second run.

I'm seeing these kind of connections glued to a long time ago. mainly in predators. and it doesn't seem like Neca is very concerned about solving it. I do not know what is happening. I don't have the energy to move my action figures anymore, because I'm afraid of breaking them. and usually either the hip joints, or the shoulder/biceps joints.
Another reviewer D Amazing broke all 3 figures legs trying to remove them from packaging. Lack of quality control, somebody's not properly testing their products before approving production smh

These look class. No idea if they will ever make it over to Ireland without having to buy these through Ebay, but these were one of my favourite things shown at New York Toy Fair last year, apart of from all the TMNT figs of course. I have to agree with you there, I really wanted The Phantom, but that Ming is definitely the standout of the 3.
I wish they would make the bodies out of color plastic and very little paint only were needed. I mean like fash Gordon body should be may of red plastic and painted in certain areas, so the joints will not stick

I've never understood why NECA continues to let this kind of thing happen. I remember years ago buying a predator figure. When I simply grabbed it with my thumb finger and my index finger to move it for the very first time and not in a rough way it simply snapped off right into my hand. it was literally the last predator figure I ever bought. Besides the fact they always just seem to be the same as it is. I remember years ago buying the original McFarlane ones I still think that those are the best predator figures I ever bought. Now I only buy the NECA movie figures. Because they don't have a lot of articulation and are pretty much plastic statues. As much as I love the sculpts they always seem to fail on the articulation part. I think if they would just fix that they could be a much bigger company than they already are. I was really looking forward to these figures coming out. But I've seen so many reviews of people having problems with them. Now I'm kind of on the fence. I can do the hair dryer or water thing. But I suffer from neuropathy in my hands, so taking figures apart sanding or shaving anything down would be almost impossible for me...
I had the same issue with my phantom. He also has the issues with the toe hinge but I just heated it up and forced it and eventually got it to move but it was very close to breaking.
The QC is trash. I purchased The Phantom literally just to have in the packaging. However when I received the figure. The box was beaten up and the skull on the belt was off-centered. And the legs were facing the left. I returned the item.
Great review ToyBro! I've been looking forward to these. Always like The Phantom & Flash and when the DOTE cartoon came out I was in hog heaven. These look super dope but the QC issues suck. I'm still down for a definite purchase though. They look too good to pass on. All they need is a knob on the back for punching action, lol.

Just got my set in the mail today. Love the aesthetic but a real pain in the ass to pose. I'm afraid I might break them if I attempt any posing.
idk why these big to company have so much QC issues. Mafex was horrible at first but they started taking time in QC issues and its paid off. IDK why Neca or Mcfarlane do that. Just like the Build A Figure Bane. I really wanted these. Sucks that these have serious QC issues.
I only had issues with Phantom, my other two figures worth okay, but the fact they used the same color parts for body and hands and then painted the hands is HORRIBLE. My rocksteady didn't move at all, I ended up calling Neca and get it replaced after about a month of waiting.

I want these so bad but I'm afraid to buy them. I don't mind heating some joints but those chipping paint joints are super bad. It's a shame because the figures are beautiful.
Your description Toybro of the issue with the Phantom’s left leg is the same thing that happened to mine. I heated it up twice - freezer trick and I started to move it. SNAP! And now I know why. I’m going to get one more and try to fix it. But NECA really needs to address this issue. The joints being painted and not cast in the correct plastic is just lazy. And I love NECA but they cheaped out and this is a wide spread issue that could hurt Defenders sales.
It seems to me that they lack quality, but still look good. Thanks for the unboxing.

Great review and honest evaluation of the flaws these figures have. I love Neca figures, but this specific buck gave me more trouble than any other figure they have produced. The design of the pegs that connect the thigh swivel and bicep swivel is the main problem. Like @Toy Bro said in the video, these must be disassembled to function properly, and that is a nightmare! I wish Neca had made improvements on these before launching the Defenders. I returned these once I realized the problems were still there. Neca's newer releases are far better than these. Remember, this buck was designed years ago, and Neca has improved since then.
I coulda sworn I saw some Defenders of the Earth figures on a smaller scale in the past year or so, can anyone tell me what line those are under?
Great review man, I have the exact same problem on the left leg. I'm really afraid of doing something to it, unfortunately I will have just to keep it standing up and not moving that leg at all.
My fist hand snapped trying to switch it w a new hand.
Well that’s a shame. They’re beautiful figures, I’m usually not a NECA collector but I love the bright colors they went with on these, they definitely stand out, but it’s sad to see the issues they come with.
Do the hip joints let the leg move up and down??? My Phantom is still in package but his right leg appears to be longer due to perhaps it moving up and down at the joint.
I honestly want to get the phantom figure and I'm going to have to get the flash gordon so I can use his left trigger hand so the phantom can double wheeled guns. I've been waiting for somebody to make a phantom figure for a while I just wish you was in six inch form.
I've yet to see a better looking Phantom figure. Shane about the issues.
How do these scale with Masters of the Universe Classics?
Heating doesn't work at all. Freezing the figures for about 20 minutes or so does loosen up the hips without having to disassemble them.
I thought about doing that but was concerned since the crotch is seemingly painted shut. And then I had someone last night tell me they DID try that and shattered theirs because the peg just sheared in two.
Interesting, some heat & appropriately applied pressure took care of my figures. These are easily worth the low asking price.

I was interested in these figures, but I think I'll let them go, the truth is that I've had these bad experiences with the bad QC of Neca in the past, whenever I buy some Neca figure I only end up with a flawed figure to get rid of it.
I wonder if the joint issues are due to paint?? Paint for them seems to be a big issue. My NECA accessory box always has paint chips when I go through it.
But damn, they always give a nice amount of accessories for the price.
I love this property (grew up watching the cartoon), and I'm a toy collector. I should be the ideal buyer for this line of figures, and I want to buy the whole set. But then I remembered that NECA's quality is garbage, and the company has no incentive to change as long as people are buying their stuff. This review pretty much reinforced all the concerns I had, based on all the NECA stuff I've owned in the past (and have since gotten rid of).

Painted joints are not acceptable nowadays. These. Figures look amazing, but they are cheaply produced.
This reminds me of my first neca figure ever... The elder predator version 1. I opened the figure and tried to gently move the right arm... Snap!
Then I tried to move the left leg gently and it snapped too.
After that I didn't buy any neca for 2 years. Then they got better and the movie turtles are among my favorite figures.
I love defenders of the earth and it's a bummer with the poor quality.

I REALLY want to get these but at $30 each and all the terrible QC issues, I just can't do it. As much as I love these characters, NECA has really dropped the ball here. Joints should not be painted! That's just plain stupid of them. Cool review, it's just too bad about the gross lack of quality in these. NECA = Non Durable Goods. :(
Retroblasting researched about it, and it seems that NECA actually categorized themselves as a company that manufactures perishable goods. They really covered their bases.

Wow... so disappointing... I was going to give these a shot, as a fan of the show as a kid. Taking figs apart and shaving down joints is work that you should only be doing if your customizing figures, not trying to just normally use brand new ones. These are unacceptable mistakes. I have watched or read about 3-4 peoples experiences with these and every single person had the same things to say, either hours and hours of work to get them usable, or flat out breakage. No thanks... Great review!

Man, between Wade's pics and your review, I *really* want to get The Phantom. And what's a review on some _amazing_ (particularly NECA) figures without a bunch of cliché negative dramatic comments lol. And just cause I own hundreds of NECA figures, and only two have broke from articulating, doesn't mean others aren't having much worse luck.
The complaining excessively about the joints/plastic (while calling the whole company trash) got really old years ago. I mean, I don't care about the NECA haters; it's just that they get super offended by ppl that love the company. That demographic of ppl that can't tolerate anyone sharing anything positive without getting internet enraged and name calling.
Yeah I try to stay out of the NECA good/bad debate, it never goes anywhere. Like I said, I almost never have issues with their stuff. This batch of figures though is something else unfortunately. At least for me.

The only responses I've ever seen from them have been blaming the consumer on "over playing" with the figures which supposedly they are not built for, and the responses I see are people saying"I'm simply posing them to put on a shelf there's no play involved"
Their (Neca) not excepting any responsibility for the QC issues on any of their lines. Their statement is that these are not toys & your basically supposed to leave them in package. Even though they are literally action figures with articulation...they are not meant to be moved.

Just looking at the Ming figure, he doesn’t seem to have much articulation. Why bother taking apart the legs on him? These looked way too good to skip. Love my Phantom. If can’t do a high step than so be it. Nice images, the review was a little harsh I think

I do say how I take them apart in describing how the legs are connected, as well as show a picture of where I file off paint.

my first Phantom had two right arms...
30 bucks for these with reused everything same weapons, paint chipping joints, dark blue pins on Meng’s arms and stuck left legs that can break off even after heated up!... shame on you Neca!.... by comparison I just preordered a 9.5 inch Marvel Select Immortal Rampaging Hulk for 27 bucks!
Beautiful figures but you're like the 5th person I've seen who has had multiple problems with these figures. So it's gonna be a easy pass for me. Neca needs to fix these guys and re release them before I'll spend money to buy a broken figure.

I think mine are possibly worse than average, but they aren't far from the norm I don't think. I've had a lot of folks reach out with similar concerns since I started posting stuff about mine.

Flash Gordon is an almost 100 year old character
Flash Gordon started off as a weekly radio show and comic book. I think at one point there was black and white TV show as well. I'm not sure if Defenders of the Earth came before or after the live-action movie.
