Retroblasting's video on NECA a while back was really illuminating as to why they don't change. The product is literally categorized as 'perishable'. Unlike every other action figure manufacturer out there.
You know it's bad when the original figures from the '80s are infinitely more secure than 2021 figures. The original figures even used metal forearms. I just never liked the black knobs on their backs.

NECA is going to release a more classic look for Phantom with striped underwear and gun holsters. May have to wait for that one to drop and hopefully it is not a Walmart exclusive.
About time. Been waiting for that Phantom forever. Any time I purchase a NECA figure I'm sure to have a hairdryer ready. These NECA bucks seem to be their version of the BuckyCap mold that Hasbro uses so much. At least NECA is more known for movie-based figures so it doesn't feel like buying the same figure over and over.
saw re-runs of these in the late 80s, when i was a kid..so id really prefer figures like these based on nostalgia factor to be accurate or better looking aesthetically than for its articulations or possibility...got all 3 last weekend in WM, Ming's the best.
Yeah it looks like I'm buying the phantom figure lol gawd damn he looks amaze balls. Kind of alarming that they are breaking right out of the box. That's a huge huge problem for me.
I am excited about the phantom but I wish he came with his 45s pistols and hulster on his both sides of his belt. It would be really cool if he got a repaint to look like the movie version. And some more hands would have been awesome.

Glad you mentioned the hips. I broke one Phantom before I figured out how to take them apart and fix them. I’m not sure if it’s the soft plastics getting assembled when they’re too hot or it’s a paint issue clogging the joint, but they definitely need to be carefully disassembled and reassembled to work correctly.
UA-camrs who advocate for consumers need to take a stronger stand and stop buying NECA products full stop. Admitting you're part of the problem doesn't absolve you from making these videos that help NECA hype their breakable junk.
I made the video becuase I like the figures, not trying to hype anything and I think I provided clear information on what to expect if you purchase these figures.
NECA has had these issues for YEARS and it’s every line; Aliens, TNMT, Godzilla, Predator and now DOTE. But if you complain on social media, instead of addressing and fixing the problem, Randy just blocks you.

Did you ever see the old movies? Billy Zane played The phantom who is kind of like a white black panther. Sam Jones and Max von Sudo play flash Gordon and Ming the merciless. Soundtrack done by Queen. I I forget the actor's name but he was supposed to originally be Odin in Thor. Timothy Dalton is like the prince of the people who live in the jungle. It's all very cheesy, but it's fun as hell to watch! NECA also came out with Alex Ross versions of The flash Gordon characters. No articulation but as with anything Alex Ross the likenesses are spot on.
Great review man. As for Neca, they must.use the cheapest manufacturer than can get with the amount of issues their stuff has. I've had a predator broken in the box the other day. It split right at the seam.
Phantom looks great. The 5 o’clock shadow looks like Cool Ranch Dorito dust. But I’m just being stupid picky. I’ll be grabbing one. Hope they do indeed make a vintage style variant.
All my neca figures are pretty much statues, specially the arcade and movie turtles. I don't bother trying to pose them.....I have attempted to get the joints loosen up a bunch of times.
I really want the phantom, but ming is what sold me on wanting to pick them up. He's got such a menacing look and great detail. Gonna get them all whenever I see em. Great review. Thanks for letting me know about the hazards of these figures, will definitely be careful when posing them.
I have some OG Phantom comics, my flatmate gave them to me before he moved out, so I may think of picking The Phantom up, at the same time NECA figures are very unstable so maybe not.

The paint chipping at the hinges kind of sucks surely should make the hinge same colour as the hand. As for Ming the pins they prob should be same colour but painting them would have possibly made the joints stuck.
These do look great, Neca always knocks it out of the park with the nice sculpts. The problems with the plastic and paint continues to plaque them, why would they paint the joints!? Just drives me nuts, I want the get the Flash Gordon but hesitant to move his joints in fear they would break. Ill just keep him in package I guess 😐. Entertaining review as always!!
I bought ming from Walmart and I didnt have any issues with the joints being tight, everything moved perfectly. But perhaps mine was just lucky, who knows.
Ok, I have a little question for people who are more familiar with the show and Phantom comics. When the Phantom takes out bad guys, he usually punches them tf out with his skull ring, but how does it work with his protection ring? Is it a nightclub stamp situation ou does he just go around jabbing people he's supposed to be protecting?
I love NECA figures, they make up most of my collection, but the quality control is ridiculous. On some figures I can understand small parts may break, but these are mostly just basic bodies, I don't understand how they can have so many issues. I think it reflects NECA's shift from near statues with a couple cuts for articulation to then giving us more modern articulation, in that they initially didn't have to account for plastic that could withstand the amount of weight and movement of parts on modern figures, so they sometimes just give out on us. I remember watching a review of their original Elder Predator and the guy went to 7 different stores and had to return them every time because of fused joints, and the thing that sucks is that it's not due to how stores handle them, they're just like that straight out of the factory. Honestly I don't think they're as bad as they used to be, heck there's much more expensive figures from other companies that have loose/brittle parts, but it's an issue that I don't see gong away anytime soon.
WD40 for joints, just don't spray on stickers. Don't use silicone spray might ruin plastic. WD40 removes old stickers example G.I.Joe vehicles. Still a pain nail scraping getting stickers off, but works well removing glue.
I kind of wish the Phantom figure came with two laser guns and gun hands.(If you've read the Phantom comics and or novels or watched the 1996 movie you'd know what I'm getting at.)
Man the colored peg and hinges for the feet blows my mind. They have 3 characters who are all wearing black boots, they could have mass produced black pegs and hinges for 3. Neca decided to cheap out and use same color as body like WTF?
Sounds like the paint is trying to bond & breaking upon moving. The best thing to do is call the company, suggest paint to use that's good & about using oil for joints.
I don't think it's as much the plastic quality as it is the fact that the joints are painted and the figures get baked to set the paint. The result looks fantastic and premium, but also leads to stuck hindered joints. They really need to look into using colored plastic in the joints rather than the painted method
Great review as usual! The figures look super dope and I really liked the cartoon as a kid but I can't give necca any of my money. No hate to those who do your money is your money but I personally won't give them a penny.
It's good NECA did the double elbow joint the traditional way instead of their TMNT (e.g. Casey Jones) version. And finally a dope Phantom worth putting on the shelves!
That was a great summary at the end of this review. I am a big time Neca fan, and bought the first figures made on this buck. Those were the Batman/Alien, Superman/Alien, and Green Lantern/Predator 2-packs. Those figures looked fantastic, but the level of work and stress it took to get them moving properly was ridiculous. I wanted the Defenders figures even though they were made on the same buck. I hoped that Neca would have corrected the resin-like plastic on these, and possibly the crazy thin peg they use to connect the shoulder to the bicep. Wrong!!! I bought all 3 figures, and returned all three. Same crap as before. Frozen bicep swivel that threatens to shear off if you heat it. Stuck thigh swivel that deforms the hip joint when you heat it and try to separate it. Brittle plastic that is ready to break at its weakest point when you articulate the elbows or knees. Neca can do better, and have! I have seen improvement in the TMNT line with better plastics and they are finally using a real ball joint at the hips of newer figures! I am not giving up on Neca, but this buck needs to be retired. Their latest Godzilla, King Kong, and horror figures have reasonably reliable plastics and forgiving joints. Most of them. :)

I'm assuming neca just uses to cheap a plastic to keep costs down. They put their budget into the deco and packaging but I'd rather just pay an extra $10-$15 for better quality plastic then to deal with this. I have some neca stuff and it looks great but I just leave it in package. I'm starting to wonder how they will hold up over time. Will the plastic start to break down in the package due to its low quality?
My flash Gordon’s leg popped off and is easy to pop back off but I can stick it on and pose him okay as long as he isn’t doing big kicks. Phantom I’ve been scared to open
With NECA breakage problems was the very reason why I refused to buy the Superman and Alien two pack when I found it in a store they wanted 200 hundred and I was like there out of there fucking mind with QC issues NECA has ,and your right they make such beautiful sculpts but there quality leaves much to be desired for there fragile joints or the painted joins it like why so lazy and cheap.
I grabbed Flash Gordon and Phantom... and got them for $24.88 cause they had the display in the wrong area... i passed on Ming, but kinda regretting it now
My left legs are still stuck even after hot water and hair dryer treatment.... the joints in the wrist and ankles not being color matched and Meng’s pin joints being dark blue.... this is unacceptable at 30 bucks a piece.... especially considering I just preordered the new almost 10 inch tall Marvel Select Rampaging Hulk for 27 bucks after shipping from BBTS.

Mandrake the Magician and Lothar were created in 1934.

Neca insists on painting the joints, causing the plastic to get stuck with paint. If they cast the plastic in the same color, it might cost them more.

Do the DC figures have the same breakage issues?
