This yin yoga class is a beginner’s guide to fully body stretching. But actually in yin yoga, stretching is not the goal. We're not trying to stretch our tissues; we're trying to give them a gentle stress. This stress helps our body make important changes at a small level, keeping our joints and tissues healthy.
Most types of yoga focus on our muscles. But in Yin Yoga we go deeper into our body to affect the ligaments, joints, and deep fascial networks.
In Yin Yoga, we do things slowly. We sit or lie down on the floor and hold poses for a longer time, like 2 to 8 minutes. In this beginner’s guide to full body stretching, we will do 6 yin yoga poses, taking short breaks between them. This helps stress the connective tissues in our body.
Now, let's talk about stress and stretch. Stress is like the pull or push we put on our body parts, and stretch is how much they get longer because of that pull or push. But here's the thing: just because we stress something doesn't always mean it will stretch. Ligaments, especially, can be stressed in Yin Yoga, but they are not as stretchy as muscles. So, we're not trying to make them stretch; we're trying to give them a little challenge to stay healthy.

I definitely know the difference between stress and stress 😮😊. I had difficulty with the deer pose but, once I figured out I found such a nice release in my hips. ❤

I recently came down with a head cold after some poor decisions. Yoga and meditation were suggested as part of a remedy. Of course I turned to you and gentle yin yoga. The difference between stretch and stress makes a world of difference. Grateful.

Hello dear Melissa, thank you for all your teachings and your videos... as i have CFS it is hard for me to do workout or even walk... but my sedentary lifestyle is causing me physical pain... and I don't know what to do because I don't have enough energy to go for a walk or take a shower... at the same time I'm afraid that yin yoga won't be enough to counter my sedentary lifestyle, so I'm lost... all this culpability causes more pain in my body...

    • @drmelissawest

First you have to restore your energy. This takes time and patience. Focus on yoga nidra, restorative yoga and then yin yoga. When you have energy you can step into practices that will release the pain in your body. This is the focus of the 4 -step incubation process in my membership community now. I'm happy to support you there. Trust that there is something magical happening inside of you as you are restoring your energy. Low energy means that something intangible is gestating inside of you, even though you cannot see it yet, yin energy is powerfuly and mysterious.

@@drmelissawest Thank you so much dr Melissa for your wise and kind advice, I've read each of your words several times because they touch me deeply, they make sense to me, I think it was the right time to hear them. I feel that yin energy requires a lot of trust and humility to see beyond the appearance and it's so hard to slow down and surrender to this seemingly limited state, when we're in survival mode with little energy but very restless…
I've always felt that restorative practices were the right thing for me, but the preparation stage of settling into a position in restorativ yoga often takes too much energy for me and makes me anxious. What's more, even when I'm exhausted, I find it extremely difficult to stand still especially basic lying down because I feel far too vulnerable and exposed. it makes me anxious and restless. I still don't know what to make of this paradox and often feel at an impasse and desperate.
I'm going to take a look at your membership community because it gives me a lot of hope.
