may i please have your protools template please. its litterly the coolest thing i've ever seen.
Wow I would really like to have this pro tools templet I own most of those plugins already and use them a lot
we wanted the pro tools template but alright...
What is the shelf life of Townsend Labs L22 Sphere? is that I want to buy it and I do not want to give so much money for a short time.
Thank you sir!

Completely understood. We talked about this on our live stream with Cheese not too long ago and he feels pretty strongly that simply handing someone his pro tools template is not that helpful. Here's why: ua-cam.com/video/g3FwUAyI-RA/v-deo.html

Thank you!
amazing to see this workflow! What is the pop filter/ wind filter thing that he has over the microphone in the other bts video?
You mean the Kaotica Eyeball? It's a reflection filter to reduce the impact of the less-than-ideal spaces they often record in.
Great video! Is Jason using a key command to open FX when he clicks on sends, or does he have a Pro Tools setting enabled that does this for him?
Actually, this is a little post-production trick that we employed to show you the plug-in settings as he talks about each send/throw. Wouldn't it be great if there was a key command for this though??
@@Townsendlabs this explains why I couldn’t find anything about it online, but it would definitely be an awesome feature! Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Are the NY, PLATE, HALL, ECHO sends that are on the AD VOX 1A channels all the same sends as on the ones on the vocal bus? If so, why is he sending it from the vocal bus if he is sending it from the 4 lead tracks, or vice versa?
@townsendlabs can you do a pro tools template for the vocals and plugins
pro tools template only thing thats gonna help us !

How do you deal with latency using so many plugins while recording in pro tools? Does that have something to do with using UA console? Thanks in advance!
@1:47 is that a video edit or is there a shortcut that displays the send fader as well as the associated plugins ??? Because if soooooo plsssssss tell me the shortcut 😭
are the plugins on the recording track purely for monitoring using the I button?
Does anyone approximately know how much DB of Compression is good while tracking in the console, and how much in Pro Tools?? It always seems like many artists scream sing, but the compression makes it listen sooo good
I can't give you exact numbers but the reason why Cheese has so many different levels of compression is that each plug-in is just doing a little bit of work. - Julian
what monitors do he use for on the go setup?
❤
wait you can take the signal into protools in mono ,as long as you commit to the sound going in through console ? thats awesome @Townsendlabs

What Mac mini does he have
do a logic one
Can use this on Protools right ?
Very Nice! Question, I see he's selecting Input 1 in protools when Sphere is using 1-2 in console, when folding down to 1 input, will protools see both inputs from console?
Hi Joey, Jason is using Console in REC mode at which point he is committing the sound of the Sphere plug-in. The channel is still stereo, but the output of the plug-in is actually dual-mono. As a result, you can track either channel in Pro Tools and get the exact same result. This is different from tracking in MON mode where you need to record both channels on a stereo track in Pro Tools. Does that answer your question? - Julian
@@Townsendlabs Thank you for the response Julian. In protools carbon will i be able to do the same? Im old school and like to commit.
Or do i record it in stereo, then bounce in mono?
"i then take that into ProTools in mono" ... this is where im confused, i thought it needs to be stereo input in the DAW, or can it be mono and it essentially captures the left side (because the left side is always higher DB when recording in stereo on sphere mic, which it's supposed to be). Or am i making this too complicated, once UA records the vocal via NEVE 88RS and vsphere plugin as stereo through UAD console, it's ok to have it routed to a mono track in your DAW? THANK YOU VERY MUCH for clarification on this.
Hey! Jason has the UA Console in REC mode, meaning that he commits to the sound of the 88RS and the Sphere plug-in on the way in. If you prefer not to commit and would like to keep all your options, you need to have Console in MON mode and record to a stereo track. Does that answer your question? - Julian
Townsend Labs thank you very much! I understand, so mono is ok on the daw if you’re committing the sphere plugin mic you’ve chosen on the uad console via rec mode enabled? However, you would want monitor mode only and stereo channel on the daw side if you want the option to change the mic later via the sphere plugin? Cool I didn’t know you can commit/Rec on console and just use the mono track on the daw side (like I did before the sphere mic took over the game). You guys are the space x of the audio world. Thank you.
@@foxitallrecords Yes, that's all correct. Including the Space X analogy ;-)
How does he take that into Pro Tools in mono ?
I use a Mac. I read the instructions but can't find the specific UA folder to place the channel strip preset in. Any help? “Library/Application Support/Universal Audio/Presets/Channel Strip” wasn't a located folder on my Macbook
That's weird as that's the location where all your UA presets should be stored. Is it maybe possible that you didn't go to your top-level library location but to your user's library path instead? - Julian
How do import this into pro tools ?
Were you ever able to get the PTs template? @Townsend Labs
We talked about this on our live stream with Cheese not too long ago and he feels pretty strongly that simply handing someone his pro tools template is not that helpful. Here's why: ua-cam.com/video/g3FwUAyI-RA/v-deo.html
Still wainting for template 🤣
So he put all these plugins before recording the artists?
For some reason his template I downloaded doesn’t import into pro tools for me
I can literally hear that he’s using a Kensington trackball lol. That button has a signature click and the sound when you take your finger off the button.
Cant you have it on a macbook?
What does he mean when he says he puts console in record mode?
The Apollo Console app allows you to either commit to all the plug-ins while recording (Record Mode) or simply monitor through them (Monitor Mode). This can be changed either globally for the entire Console or on a channel basis. As an experienced engineer, Jason prefers to print all of the plug-ins right away, which also means that he can record on a mono channel in Pro Tools rather than a stereo track you'd normally need for recordings made with the Sphere L22 mic. Does that answer your question? - Julian
How’d he click the sends and open the plugins for that send instead of the send fader?
what he said!
Can anybody please elaborate on the purpose of having different plugins on the record path vs the lead bus processing?
Example adding a tap simulator to the aux allows the raw vocals to receive the effects of the vst
Rec Aux bus
Effects
^
Leas vocal
Regular effects
^
All vox bux
We just tryna get the Pro Tools Template 👀😅😇
I use Reaper instead of Pro Tools, when he records into the record track does it print all the effects onto the vocal when he drops it down to the Lead? Seems strange that there’s no EQ, Compression etc on the Leads. Or does he do all the subtractive EQing and stuff on the Lead Bus?
No, he doesn't print the effects when he drops down to the lead. See all those plug-ins on the "AD VOX 1A", "AD VOX 2A"... tracks? It's basically the same plug-ins as on the record track and they are all processing in real time. Plus, there's additional processing on the lead bus. Does that makes sense? - Julian
@Beats Beats there are a lot of reasons why it makes sense to commit if you have the confidence to do so. Freeing yourself up mentally to move forward and staying creative is probably the most important one. Especially when you're working a quickly as Jason does. In the case of working with the Sphere L22, it also means that you can record on a mono track rather than a stereo track, which frees up CPU and DSP resources.
@@Townsendlabs Do you need to use a stereo track in console to use or record with the sphere, and if so, why is that? I’ve never known anybody who tracks vocals with a stereo track so where is this “You can record on a mono track rather than a stereo track” stuff coming from
@@user-ux1vj9vx7s Sphere needs two channels to accurately model the on and and off-axis characteristics of mics. If you commit the processing in the Console then you only need too record one channel in your DAW (but that means you can't change the microphone model later). If you want to change the model later then you need to record both unprocessed tracks in your DAW so they can be processed with Sphere later.
Any chance we can get the pro tools template as well?
We'll check on that with Jason. Make sure you tune into our upcoming Facebook Live Q&A with him this Saturday where he'll have his template session up as well: bit.ly/30Ni0B3
@@Townsendlabs I'll tune in! If he can provide that ahead of time, a lot of us can follow along with our sphere mics, plugins, etc.
@@AReallyBigDay we talked about making the PT template available for download during our recent live stream with Jason. He's not really keen on releasing it, in part because he believes that everybody should develop their own sound and template. I personally think that you can rebuild most of it from this video with a little bit of effort, but I understand that it would be convenient to just download it. Here's the conversation I'm referring to: ua-cam.com/video/g3FwUAyI-RA/v-deo.html
Does he have an avid HDX card working with UAD Apollo? How can he record all of that with no latency without an HDX card unless he’s got a top of the line Mac Pro or something.
No, it's actually a fully decked out Mac Mini but no HDX. Just the Apollo Twin. I was surprised to find that this system works so well with so much processing and low latency artist monitoring. - Julian
@@Townsendlabs Oh man, my macbook pro 2019 could never and I fully maxed it out! Thanks for the reply, I might just go snoop around Ebay now :) this was a good video to see by the way. I always felt weird about committing my Mic choice through UAD and recording to mono tracks so this set my mind at ease. I just have to remember to put in the comments which mic I used. It would be cool if there was a way to identify what mic was used within the software for times I forgot but that feels like asking the impossible with what you guys have already done!
What's the difference between recording & mixing template
A Recording Template is created strictly for recording as quickly and as efficiently as possible. When u make or use a Recording templates u want less latency and less cpu usage as possible so the artist & Engineer can get thru songs quicker
A Mixing Template is strictly for mixing. It's created to get you from point A to Point B fast without starting the mix from scratch. This also helps you mix the record quickly to have it done by a certain deadline set by the Artist and/or Label
(98% of the Industry uses templates so don't be discouraged into making ur own to get your own sound🔥 it'll be worth it in the long run instead of starting everything from scratch hindering your creativity)
Hope this helps
So he mixes while recording vocals ?
That looks more of a mixing template rather than a recording chain..
Guessing the latency and CPU load if it is his recording chain..😵
From speaking with Cheese I know that it's extremely important to him that both the artist and he himself hear the recording as close to the finished result as possible. So yes, this is his tracking template, but it gives him and the artists to the ability to create the entire vocal arrangement on the fly. There have been several occasions when his rough mix ended up being the final mix. I'll ask Jason to chime in as well. - Julian
He is using this for vocals only....music is a 2 track so it could work if his computer is fast enough
@@Townsendlabs Uhh.. Who in the fuck is Cheese?

Could someone kindly answer my question if you see this and you’re truly knowledgeable on the subject. On the track that he uses to record before bringing the takes down to the tracks below it, Is he recording the vocal chain/processing to the audio in real time, the inserts and such, and dragging the clips down or does he render the audio first to write the processing to the clip and drag it down, or what would be the process. To render the audio after every take just to write the processing on the clip seems incredibly time consuming and inefficient, or is there a way that he does it in real time. Also, is he recording the sends too, or are those only there so the singer can hear all of the send effects while they’re tracking and he just copies the send order processing on the tracks below. If someone could thoroughly respond on the subject, I’d greatly, greatly appreciate it. I’m coming from logic and I’m still trying to get the feel for PT, and the work flow. Thanks
Hey! Great questions. All of the processing in Pro Tools (so not the UA Console) is happening in real time. The plug-in settings on the record track and the drop-down lead tracks are essentially (if not exactly) the same. Rendering/bouncing the tracks would take too longer for this fast-paced tracking process. The same goes for the sends. Does that make sense? - Julian
@@Townsendlabs No, It doesn’t make sense, because it isn’t happening in real time.. at least for me for some reason. If I have a plugin in an insert on the audio track I record on, I hear the processing only on the track with the plugin, but if I were to move it down to a completely different empty track with nothing on it, I lose the processing from the plugin.. therefore it doesn’t track processing in real time. I just want to be able to throw a compressor on the insert of my record track, record it and have the compression still be on the audio clip no matter what track I move it to
@@blakeb8139 are you asking how to do it or you asking how Jason does it in his template? In order to render the plug-ins on a track in Pro Tools, you need to commit the track. Right click the track name and choose "commit". You'll have a bunch of options for that. Alternatively, you can also use audio suite effects in Pro Tools that get rendered right away.
@@Townsendlabs Nevermind.
@@Townsendlabs I do all of that already. I talked about it in my post. What I was asking is unrelated to his stuff. I was hoping someone who was thorough in pro tools would see my post and give me some insight on it. My question were regarding how to do it without rendering, or if it was possible
I've watched this video probably 14 times now, it's funny people are asking for the template because i didnt even think to ask for that, i've been manually creating this template and have a version that works for me. However, I'm noticing he has inserts and sends on the drop down lead AD VOX A1 A2 A3 A4 tracks (right? i use cubase). What's on those inserts and sends (i see all the lead channels going to A1 on the output but they still have tons of inserts and sends on the individual tracks. Also, would be very curious to know how he's using that AD VOX 5A track with all the effects on it and sending to EFX. at 02:54 he saying he doesnt use sends anymore but processed audio tracks, i get that but when he says he keeps AD VOX 5A right under there for ease of use, i dont get how he uses it? Just put's one vocal on the effects track or drags and drops the plugins off of that track and puts it on Lead VOX group bus? sorry lol so many questions
There's no way you can duplicate this because he doesn't even begin to open all of the tracks. lol

Does anyone know if he is monitoring in Console or Pro Tools? I am a little confused because what if the artists wants to hear autotune while recording? Then you would have to commit the autotune in console which I am not a fan of doing. Any work arounds for this?
Jason monitors the output of Pro Tools rather than Console and he has Autotune inserted in Pro Tools. However, you can also run Autotune in Console in MON mode for monitoring. Both workflows are totally valid, it just depends on your preference. - Julian
@@Townsendlabs thanks!
I have a question, it will be so helpful if you guys answer. Is the vocal printed with AD_REC_A1 channel effects or they are there just for tracking over headphones? Can you please answer
Hey! The vocal is not printed with the effects on the AD_REC_A1 channel. From there it just continues to the other Aux tracks for monitoring but the effects are not printed. The only thing printed is the Neve 88RS Unison plug-in and the Sphere plug-in. - Julian
