Am I triggered? No not really, I do find it irritating that someone made a video nitpicking a genre without proper research? Of course.
I honestly feel sorry for the guy for having such a closed mind and assuming that “stoner doom” is filled to the brim with untalented drug addicted Neanderthals.
Scott I give you a solid 5 out of 5 for the great commentary.
Guy with the hat I give you 2 points for making a video about “stoner doom” but deduct 5 points for lack of reach on said topic.

The "lack of songwriting" comment is the whole point of his video. I kind of get it, as I've gotten a bit burned out on dime a dozen riffs and harsh vocals getting rehashed. That said some of my favorite songs, riffs and vocalists of all time are in this genre, not even counting Sabbath. For every generic stoner band there is an All Them Witches, King Buffalo, Acid Bath, or Cathedral. I loved this music before I ever tried weed and I still love it now that Im sober.

That video popped up in my feed when it first came out. I remember laughing a lot as I listened to him. Finn's take on this genre is done entirely from the perspective of someone who knows next to nothing about it. Quoting Wikipedia for info on anything, but especially this genre isn't going to endear you to anyone. About the only thing I agree with him about is the associated imagery with stoner doom. It can be overly cliche with tons of bands leaning into it for whatever reason. But the music has evolved so much over the last 30 years, it barely feels like the same genre that produced Kyuss and Sleep. Hints of it here and there, but there is way more psychedelic influences to be found now. And Psych is a much broader based genre, so the influences have way more variety these days. I can't understand what possessed him to make an opinion video on a genre of music that he is woefully ignorant of? It really comes off more like trolling than an actual take. He should have at least done a little homework first. And he should have watched how often he contradicted himself before posting it.

I can confidently state that I am Gen X & not remotely jealous or envious of Boomers or Millennials. This is exactly the blanket statement stuff from both sides that is beyond annoying. I find it nauseating yet hysterical the people that have zero clue what it takes to create music have so much to say about it especially regarding process. I have many songs in this genre & my songs have NOTHING to do with weed or alcohol. His attack on dudes addicted to fuzz pedals being boring is kinda accurate but that represents a small sliver of the bands in this genre. There is a lot going on conceptually with a lot of bands & hybriding other seemingly disparate genres. One of the best Doom bands going is Divide & Dissolve. NOTHING to do with drugs. I love the idea of being a sober musician that makes music that sounds like I would have to be on drugs. End Rant

I can see why people don't like his videos, especially when specific key points are either altered or omitted altogether. He also comes of "Matter of Factly" which rubs people the wrong way, especially when he's the one who is wrong.

There are so many great stoner bands and even more amazing bands that has stoner influences in their sound... Komatsu (Netherlands), Earthless and Red Fang (USA), Kadavar (Germany) are some of the ones that I saw live in recent years here in Brazil and they are all great and different from each other! Finn seems to try to speak with authority about a genre he clearly doesn’t have enough knowledge about. That’s okay. I’ve certainly done that with death metal when I was drunk and talking out my ass years ago. I kinda feel bad for him though, because this is caught on camera. Forever.
I tend to agree with his concerns about the imagery associated, however this is where he lost me. When he tried to stereotype the fans as “old, fat burnouts,” I realized he has very, very little experience with this genre.
Some of the most amazing artists - not just musicians- I’ve ever met came from this scene. Some of the smartest have. To try to dumb us down into a stereotype to fit his argument is childish and misleading. It’s the same kind of tactics racists and homophobes use, just not as serious obviously.
Overall, Finn’s video has reinforced my reasoning behind why Clean and Sober Stoner is one of only four channels I will watch on UA-cam.
Oh, and hey EHG is my therapy :) helps to know someone else has gone through some shit. All the confederate flags and shit they flew is uncool af, I will admit that.

I’m not familiar with Finn. This is my first viewing of him. I find him very dismissive of an entire HUGE part of the metal community. I get that maybe stoner or doom metal isn’t his thing, but don’t shit on people who it is.
To randomly mistake facts, like the song titles and then not clarify just saying “whatever” to me makes it seem he feels he is above it.
The moment you read it off Wikipedia, I knew he had no idea what he is talking about. He simply should not have done the video.
There are some subgenres I do not particularly like, but I would rather explore and see if maybe there is something similar I do. Such a narrow minded viewpoint.

In my opinion, it all comes down to music preference. If you asked me about Nu-Metal I would likely use most of the same talking points. Boring, repetitive, no lyric content, it all sounds the same, frat boy jams, etc. Yet, the nu-fan may disagree.
Had he made this video with a full steam ahead breakdown of his choosing, it may be a different story. This seemed like a fan request and he obliged. So, his disclaimer covers most of the points that are off base, imo.

I will be honest I am more into punk than stoner and not sure if its the case in the US but here in the UK you have a few stoner bands who have an audience who very much not just your stoner rock "crowd" Orange goblin for instance because of their heavy motorhead influence have a big punk rock following at their shows, same with uncle acid and the deadbeats due to the big detroit garage rock influences on their sound, as with my previous comment I'm just trying to rationalise where finn could be coming from.

Anyone who thinks that there's not enough craftsmanship, dynamics, variation and melodies in stoner metal should listen to the last few Elder albums, it's not true that they're just "recycled Sabbath riffs", not that it's true for all the other stoner metal bands either, but it's especially not true for Elder.

I played in two doom/stoner bands in the early 00's, and I quit because I got heart sick of playing with bands that just re-hashed Sabbath riffs and invoked that era as a substitute for thought, care or originality in thier music. There were some great bands, like Dark Castle, Worship, Mournful Congregation, Hierophant etc, but for every one that was pushing the sonic envelope, there was a St. Vitus clone, cranking out the ooooh yeah yeahs! in thier charity shop flares. Also when I was a teenager, the only stonery bands I could get into were QOTSA, Priestess and ASG because their hooks were so strong and they changed tempo frequently. Cool video! And thanks for your insights. Yeah, Finn doesn’t do the genre of stoner rock and stoner doom any justice here. It comes across as narrow-minded and simplistic.
There are so many amazing and interesting bands out there experimenting with the formula at the moment. Elephant Tree, adding in shoegaze and folk. Messa, adding in doomjazz and black metal. Or Black Moon Mother, adding in dance and triphop elements. It’s there, but you gotta dig deeper. That goes for any genre.
Where I do heavily agree with him is concerning the overplayed and overwrought imagery and themes of drugs, mammoths, witches, dope, green, lung etc etc. When I see a band with the aforementioned terms, I roll my eyes a little bit. We need some new influences on that front for sure.
As a vocalist in a stoner band (Cervus, check us out wink wink), I do think about tackling other subject matter, and I guess I want to approach it from a more personal, emotional angle. But to each his or her own, of course, but being mindful of these tropes is a good thing and can help in creating new and fresh ideas.
