Marcus is a great teacher. I love how he separated his hands, playing one hand in his knee and the other on the drums. Very helpful to see exactly what was happening. Thanks, guys!
BRO YOU ARE AMAZING RIGHT ON POINT BECAUSE ALTHOUGH DENNIS HAS SPEED PARTICULARLY MORE IN THEE HANDS I WOULD NOT CONSIDER HIS FEET EQUAL AS WELL ESPECIALLY WHEN COMPARING IT TO DRUMMERS LIKE GEORGE KOLLIAS DEREK RODDY EUGENE RYABEHENKO AND VIGIL DONATI
On the West Side story fill, I like to (at the slow pace you began with) interject an open hi-hat on the first 1, a snare on 3, and a ride bell on the "and" after every other four. I realize it's a little Steve Smith-y (Journey), but I think it sounds good. Thanks for introducing me to these fills. I'm a young drummer who isn't familiar with a lot of material, but these are all very fun. You'd just have to cut some tom notes.
Another cool thing about the West Side fill at that pace is that you can make sort of a half-time shuffle out of it by playing open handed 8th notes on the hi-hat, replacing a tom note on four with a snare, add 2 ride bell notes on the first and + the first 1 count. It's supremely tricky, but you'll have yourself a pretty cool back beat for.... well, pretty much any genre you want. You'd just have to cut some tom notes. Anyway, I just wanted to add my two cents.
I know... why would these fills get a drummer fired? Any musician hearing that would recognize the quality and skill. Should rather title the video "Fills to get you hired".
It's called overplaying you guys. You wouldn't fills this fast in 99% of musical situations. It would just sound out of place, overbearing, and horrible. And most importantly, it would piss off the rest of your band mates.
That's a joke, right? Always liked the 'Stripes, but technically, I don't see the challenge...That said, 'Seven Nation Army', was always my favorite by them.
It's so cool, because I actually know Marcus personally and have gotten to work with him on projects as an engineer. the dude is so humble and insanely talented.
What i love about death metal is that they find a way to be extremely technical and fast while retaining the musical aspect, no fill no matter how fast or technical will get you fired
I took a lesson with Dennis in 91. to get his single stroke triplets flying at a young age he used the Moeller technique and duck taped phone books to his forearms and played. Worked his speed up slowly. Years later, I believe him.
Outstanding lesson - Really stretching, for me at least, because it took me in a new direction from a lot of other drum tutorials. Taught me licks I never thought I'd be able to play! Thanks Marcus
Super cool explanation... the part where you play one hand and then the other is super nice for learning very quick. Incredible how everything changes with just changing the tempo....
It's not just the licks, it's building the skill to do them. With skill comes higher skill. Fantastic timing practices, as well as just looking awesome!
6.49 one of my drum teachers had me playing this as a starting point for independence in my left hand. Great fills. I played in punk bands where you can use these sort of fills very effectively but did get thrown out of club bands early on for being far too familiar with the Bonham triplet but at that time I had a lot of fills but very little control over fit. That was something which came later, in fact after watching an interview with Cozy Powell and he said sometimes drummers have to remember less is more and that was like profound wisdom at the time.
I wasn't fired, because I was in junior high school, but I was reprimanded a little for how I drummed to "Pomp And Circumstance" for our graduation. Mr. Bezner instructed all students to march into the auditorium with their "right foot landing in sync with the bass drum." So for the first ten measures or so, I played "boom...BAP...boom...BAP"...you know, like that. Then I thought I'd add "shee-ik-BAP, ba-boom-boom-BAP-boom, shee-ik-BAP, ba-boom-boom-BAP-boom"...the part to "Walk This Way." "Yeah, let's see their right foot land in sync with THIS!" I mused while playing it. Mr. Bezner turned around and tried o give me the dirtiest of looks, but I could tell he wanted to laugh. So, I still humored him and reverted to Boom...BAP...Boom...BAP...
After so many watches of this video, I finally got the 1st buddy rich drum fill. It fills great to know this fill. I plan to work on the next one. Ty for your video guys! It pays off to work hard!
omg, those are great...Buddy & Dennis...Buddy Rich is just the alpha & omega of drumming...if you ever get bored with your drums, you aren't trying hard enough....I wasn't familiar with Marcus, he makes quite an impression.
Fonzo Hernandez Fill to get you fired the mini solo of 32nd notes in Angel of Death in a ballad :) . Had to learn that for one band and that song is hard work with one bass drum. Punks only have one bass drum.
The brotha got some solid chops. Jumped from one tempo to the next with barely a pause in between. Good shit. Nice sound to for the style, does it justice.
where the f*ck has THIS guy been hiding! ... in the building next door to the ''Dave Di Censo's advanced university taught via Berkley drum technology by drum teachers wishing to stay anonymous'' section of the campus? meanwhile ... guys like Phil Rudd, ''The Panamian Paradiddler'', and Rudolph 'Rudy' Mentz make headlines every month? ok ... Marcus Finnie .... if i don't see your name in Drummerworld after the ending of this cool video then something's wrong, man ....)
Kellen Mills, it's a common modern music industry myth, that "less is ALWAYS more", especially from the drum throne, thanks mainly to the fact that you don't actually have to have a background, in music education, to be in a band, and prevalent rock drummers, such as Ringo Starr, and Phil Rudd.
GroboClone that is also a valid point. although, one might argue that genre has a lot to do with what a drummer's role in a song is. for most pop songs, there's really no reason why you need to play a fill like this, unless there's time for you to solo, or you're the next Dave Grohl. for big band, and improvisational music, big fills like these can indeed show off a drummer's skill AND serve the song.
This man is so freaking enlightening. I couldn't understand why the hell you wouldn't play those licks untill he used the "dunk-off" metaphor and I finally understood!! I can't wait too watch this man more. I love learning most things on my own (started playing guitar at 12 never took lessons I'm 24 now) but man when a phenomenal teacher comes along I turn into a sponge. I'm literally going too binge watch this guy today.
So rad Jeremiah! Inspired by your passion and excitement! Start a profile on our site and let us know what you think about the free lessons :) We'll drop you an email to say hey!
I think Marcus is an incredible teacher - such a great vibe and a phenomenal player. If you were in Atlanta, I'd be studying with you. Much Respect, Richie T Atlanta, Ga
Two of my favorite drummers! Dennis and Buddy - say no more. Awesome lesson here! Great sounding drums too, loving the snare rack in the background. All the best, David Curtis

DAKOTA13ize No, it is pretty much a term for all instruments. I play the trumpet in my jazz band and my section including the bass, drums, saxophones, and trombones use the term lick.
Took me a minute, but I finally got the first one. I was so happy that I couldn't put the sticks down and played that lick so many times in a row,my arms hurt for a few days.
Marcus is a great teacher. I love how he separated his hands, playing one hand in his knee and the other on the drums. Very helpful to see exactly what was happening. Thanks, guys!

those toms are gold
Glad you dig it!
May I ask what Toms you use?
They do sound very nice. If I had toms like that, I'd abuse them quite frequently.
I think they are dw's
www.dwdrums.com/drums/collectors/
they are expensive though
"Bro, we're gonna have to let you go. We can't stand it when you play quality licks at our gigs"
Hehe
I know... why would these fills get a drummer fired? Any musician hearing that would recognize the quality and skill. Should rather title the video "Fills to get you hired".
Darth Chop lol right? That first lick was awesome
It's called overplaying you guys. You wouldn't fills this fast in 99% of musical situations. It would just sound out of place, overbearing, and horrible. And most importantly, it would piss off the rest of your band mates.
if only guitarists understood this principle
I only needed one lick to get fired from the office.
whanowa oh wow 😂
Although it is not the intended joke, I felt this was necessary. ua-cam.com/video/krDxhnaKD7Q/v-deo.html
Your boss's forehead.
Brandon Hall Way to take the joke too far brah. Good job.
I couldn’t even get the set in the office...
Good, but can you play "Seven nation army"?
I think you may need to relax
That's too easy, obviously Matt.
;)
That's a joke, right? Always liked the 'Stripes, but technically, I don't see the challenge...That said, 'Seven Nation Army', was always my favorite by them.
I find your lack of irony disturbing, guys
lick to get you fired is to be absent during practice. 4 times.
Alder Ladybius lmfao
Alder Ladybius Sounds like experience
Crocodile Dundingle yeah..i fired 1.
Was he busy practicing these licks? ;)
Alder Ladybius do it in 13/16 time and then see if you get more fired
It's so cool, because I actually know Marcus personally and have gotten to work with him on projects as an engineer. the dude is so humble and insanely talented.
You had me hooked at '4 licks that'll get you fired'...how could you not watch the whole clip after that opening..?
Haha hopefully they all deliver Geoff!!
What i love about death metal is that they find a way to be extremely technical and fast while retaining the musical aspect, no fill no matter how fast or technical will get you fired
bravo to the sound engineer drums sound amazing.
Thanks Louis!
They do sound quite ridiculously good lol.
That floor tom especially. Wow. Those are Yamaha PHXs, right? Serious, serious drums, and they sound like it.
Yup. Yamaha phoenix.
That first BR fill is brilliant and one of my faves, but don't limit it just the toms. Love pulling it out with the snare & hi-hat as well.
You could definitely create variations to all these ideas! Would love to see a video of you expanding on them!
I took a lesson with Dennis in 91. to get his single stroke triplets flying at a young age he used the Moeller technique and duck taped phone books to his forearms and played. Worked his speed up slowly. Years later, I believe him.
Next lesson - "How to get fired by using phonebooks as wrist weights." :')
180 DRUMS Not on the gig, dude.
That is what he said in early 90's clinics.
That 4th fill is groovy as shit. I'd listen to a song with that as a main beat.
Outstanding lesson - Really stretching, for me at least, because it took me in a new direction from a lot of other drum tutorials. Taught me licks I never thought I'd be able to play! Thanks Marcus
Amazing! We're going to frame this comment on our wall!
urbanfox93 thank you for watching!!
Super cool explanation... the part where you play one hand and then the other is super nice for learning very quick.
Incredible how everything changes with just changing the tempo....
You're the man Juan!
that first fill feels like a HEALTH song
The smile on the hosts face is priceless as hes mesmorized by the controlled speed anf pure soul of that first fill!
why am I watching this??
Im not a drummer
Haha! Hope you enjoyed it anyways?!
linkin krap Same
Ha same here, I'm just trying to figure out how to fire my drummer
linkin krap I know right neither am I I'm a bass player
linkin krap same, im just a trumpet player
It's not just the licks, it's building the skill to do them. With skill comes higher skill. Fantastic timing practices, as well as just looking awesome!
You guys are awesome! I I have watch this video over 16 times and never get tired of it!👍🏻
No wonder we got so many views on this one :) You're the best Boss Gamer!
Marcus seems like a super nice dude. That's a nice quality for instructing and teaching.
He's really one of the best!
That was pretty sick! Never seen that kind of speed on a fill like that.
Marcus is the real deal Edward, happy it blew your mind!
Marcus did an excellent job on these extremely difficult licks, fun to watch him
I was watching this video while i was at work. The boss saw me and i got fired.
This video wasn't lying.
Jason, we tried to warn you. I hope you're using this extra time to get fired from any bands you're in by practicing this.
Those drums sound amazing
Oh that´s cool...and oldschool :-D Thanks guys...happy holidays
Thanks man!
Sounds like you've been around the block man! Keep up the hard work!
Those drums sound just amazing!
Thank you Marton!!
im not even a drummer... im a guitarist. still fun to watch though
You must be the coolest guitar player. ;)
Nah... I am!!! hahaha
This is to watch so you know when to fire the drummer after he plays one of them :)
Yeah sometimes I do that with guitar videos
After so many watches of this video, I finally got the 1st buddy rich drum fill. It fills great to know this fill. I plan to work on the next one. Ty for your video guys! It pays off to work hard!
Thanks for the lesson Mr. Ray Allen.

Great video. Dennis Chambers is just incredible.
Couldn't agree more about Uncle Dennis! Glad you enjoyed the vid!
I play the thing on quads(we call them tenors) and its really fun.
Would love to see that!
omg, those are great...Buddy & Dennis...Buddy Rich is just the alpha & omega of drumming...if you ever get bored with your drums, you aren't trying hard enough....I wasn't familiar with Marcus, he makes quite an impression.
We completely agree Earl!
Another way to get fired some tech death metal drums
Lol. But what if you play death metal, professionally? ;)
Fonzo Hernandez Fill to get you fired the mini solo of 32nd notes in Angel of Death in a ballad :) . Had to learn that for one band and that song is hard work with one bass drum. Punks only have one bass drum.
Fonzo Hernandez hahah yeah. Like Archspire.
absolutely appalled when i got fired from my church drumming gig. apparently a 10 minute solo in the middle of the lords prayer is "distracting"
What a lovely feeling and teaching. You translated my passion in licks, thanks so much!
Our honor :)
Mmmm... not quite my tempo
LOL
Shut the fuck up
Jacob Park I hate you
The brotha got some solid chops. Jumped from one tempo to the next with barely a pause in between. Good shit. Nice sound to for the style, does it justice.
Nice!, Happy holidays
You too :)
Thank you Marcus. Those are some fine slick and professional licks. Very cool, all the best sir.
take a shot every time he says lick
I did this and now I'm russian
I'm in ICU!! Thanks😆🤘

I love how honest he is about it ^^ awesome licks

This might be one of our favorite UA-cam comments yet!
Turns out my drum teacher went to high school with this guy and they were in jazz band together and this guy taught him a lot of what he knows.
More like, How to get hired for a metal band!
Hehe... True!
LOVE the sound of the toms! Moon Gels baby!
If Flight of the Bumblebee was on drums.
Hehe
holy shit i got a reply
Beautiful work, Marcus. Thanks!
Does he not remind you of tom morello? Like a lot? Like a drummer tom morello. Sound drumming anyway :)
Jakeus Baba i thought the same thing
Awesome. Big compliment!
180 DRUMS I think I know the Richard I'm sure he was the one in our high school he was the drum instructor for drum line
Jakeus Baba
i met Tom once. Nice guy
I tought same thing too
Many thanks guys an insight into the world of a master drummer what more could any drummer want.
Those doubles you're doing across drums that you learned from tenor drum players are called sweeps
He's also using crossovers technique from tenors
I like the closeness of those drums
I don't get the "get you fired" part?
Kellen Mills, it's a common modern music industry myth, that "less is ALWAYS more", especially from the drum throne, thanks mainly to the fact that you don't actually have to have a background, in music education, to be in a band, and prevalent rock drummers, such as Ringo Starr, and Phil Rudd.
Oh okay I getcha now, thank you
you make it sound like that's a bad thing.
Great question Kellen. Gave Lee and GroboClone a good opportunity to share great perspectives!
Marrcccuusss! Finnie is so awesome man... Great guy and awesome teacher. I was honored to take some lessons with him as a kid. Blessings bro!
Awesome Asa, bet you're a killer player!
Asa Wiggins he is a killer player!!
Is that a moon gel on the ride cymbal???
Ben Walters Looks like it. Probably wanting to cut out a little bit of the sustain.

Two of my favorite drummers! Dennis and Buddy - say no more. Awesome lesson here! Great sounding drums too, loving the snare rack in the background. All the best, David Curtis
Thanks a ton David! Honored by your words. Glad you dig the snare wall too ;)

No wonder it has so many views!
Do you have a Yamaha PHX as well?
Why cover the Yamaha logos? That kit is the best, never hide it!!
Some of the people who come in to teach are endorsers, probably.
Holy Shit
The best lessons! I particularly like that this is free form and you also chat about music. Great stuff!
Thanks Filip! Hope you dig all the others lessons too:)
but can he play nickleback song?
Lol!
dude your drums sounds amazing
I think the toms would sound much better if you can deaden that snare rattle.
This is true! But that would change the snare sound as well... oh the decisions!
You wouldn’t have to deaden the snare, they just need to gate the snare mic
Yeah, that snare buzz is pretty fierce!
The snare wire strainer could be thrown off to avoid the "sympathetic buzz" of the snares...
@@jaredbobier2844 No my friend, it's not that simple.
Awesome video. Great guys too!!! Saved to my favorites!!!
Sorry I'm British Merry Christmas.
Stephen Brooks don't apologize for being British! Ha!
Stephen Brooks aye mate.. farewell then.. i cant english but i know wicher 3
Oh damn! Dude got skillz! I wanna sample these licks for my music.

I'm going to play this during my worship music set next week!!!
It's weird hearing the term lick for drums I thought it was just a guitar thing
DAKOTA13ize No, it is pretty much a term for all instruments. I play the trumpet in my jazz band and my section including the bass, drums, saxophones, and trombones use the term lick.
This dude is super chill ✌🏻️
im trying to keep my job thanks anyways. 😂😂
Run away. ;)
Great Lesson!! Very Helpful, thanks!!
This inspired me to quit drumming
Awesome! I would say he and like him are ahead of the normal everyday same ole same ole. It's awesome the tunes carry on through this style.
Thanks J.j!
You will never be Drumeo no matter how hard you try.
Mac Gordon This is more entertaining than drumeo tbh
Mac Gordon Drumeo is just scraping the fuckin bottom of the barrel
You can never have enough high quality educational material out there.
Mac Gordon just enjoy
these guys are wayyy better than drumeo imo. to each there own though
Great video and great playing!
Whenever he says lick I cringe a little.
Brian, great idea. Next video title "Cring Worthy Licks".
"Licks that make you cringe..and get fired"
Hahaha you guys should do it!
oooh that's a beautiful tom sound.
You said something I've never even considered: Numb Chucks are a lot like drumming. Dang ME you are good ! ! !
Took me a minute, but I finally got the first one. I was so happy that I couldn't put the sticks down and played that lick so many times in a row,my arms hurt for a few days.
Real fun video. Thank you!
Thank you, Malcolm!
Great stuff.. Buddy one of the gods
How are you guys not biggggg on UA-cam! Love your content keep it up guys
