Is Karl Rock Right: Are Indians Scammers?

  • Karl Rock is a popular foreign UA-camr making videos in India. However from the numerous videos he makes about scams in India it seems that he's trying to imply that his adopted homeland is a nation of scammers and cheats. Is Karl Rock right to portray Indians in this way? Myself and Harald Baldr discussed scamming in India and our own experiences on our way down to Jaipur recently and here is the discussion. Let me know what your experiences in India have been and if you think Karl Rock is correct in his assessment in the comments section below.

Indians also face the same scams if they don't belong to that area or can't speak local language. Frankly it's disgusting. It's one of the reasons I avoid public transport and prefer to travel by my car. Sone destinations are simply not worth the hassle. For example Fatehpur Sikri. They chase your car on bikes banging on the sides asking you to stop two kilometres away they want to take you to their parking lot. The charge for parking is Rs 50 they want to scare you into paying Rs 250-Rs400. Then from the parking lot they tell you that you can't drrop off the family till the gate of the dargah which is on a steep hill as there is no place to turnaround. They tell you it's 2 kilometres away . You can't see it from parking. Then they charge 250 for auto to take you there. Frankly I got so pissed and finally understood why every person in Agra asked me not to go there. I'm never ever going there again.

Exactly what I was thinking. If I as a Northie go to so a Southern State, they will overcharge Me, and vice versa.
In fact, over charging Tourists by Taxi Drivers happens at most places in the world. Or other similar scams on tourists too.
I went to Argentina and was told specifically to beware of Taxi Drivers giving you Fake currency notes when returning change.

@@rahul.83 agree with you. one of the reason why I found services like ola very helpful. I'm glad auto drivers are accepting it in some places, like in Chennai and I appreciate them for that. Language barrier was not an issue anymore. I'm not a fan in riding cabs, I prefer auto for short distance rides in cities, and i will support them if they keep up with the times.
Survival is not an excuse for straight out overcharging people. Guess what, every living humans have to survive. Auto / Taxi drivers are no special snowflakes! That is called theft and it breaks one's trust in the society. Like Harald or Bald said in one video, it is not the fact that it cost more than normal but they tried to take advantage of you, which is just a terrible feeling.

I've seen few videos of Harald. He shares his experiences, good or bad. Sometimes about scams as well.
Coming to Karl, I've seen plenty of his videos. Even he doesn't try to portray India as a country of scammers. He tries to create awareness amongst foreigners or probable tourist so that they could avoid getting scammed in their day-to-day lives. He explains every trap that he's been into, so that noone else goes through the same. You too are creating awareness about India in your own way:) The truth is you do get scammed at times. Even Indian tourists get scammed when they travel to other parts of the country. You need to be aware, not too naive, like Harald said show some anger, it works.

If someone hasn't boarded the train then that berth becomes free and the TT has the right to sell that berth to RAC passengers for a fee, a fee that goes to the railway.

The taxi driver from Delhi airport screwed me by initially understanding that I needed to be taken to the train station but this suddenly changed during the journey and I ended up being taken to tourist offices around Dehli where they ridiculed my travel plans and tried to sell me anything they could. Thanks for the perspective on this. My wife and I are about to fly back to the USA from Delhi after spending 23 days in India. We had a few experiences where people were not forthcoming or lied in order to get kickbacks because they knew we were extremely vulnerable, being foreigners. It is definitely true that 99% of Indian people are honest, well intentioned, generous, friendly, etc. What makes traveling to India stressful is the fact that there does seem to be an industry that preys upon the vulnerabilities of foreign travelers, which goes unregulated by the authorities. The locals who interacted with us the most were the ones who were trying to get money from us, which is unfortunate- the average Indian is just minding their own business without an ulterior motive, so you don’t notice them as much. Little things started to add up that made us hyper vigilant- in one situation I had to get angry in order to be treated fairly- basically a local was pretending to be friendly in order to make money and was capitalizing on our extremely vulnerable situation. We were never sure if we were getting objective information or if the info was skewed to benefit the people we were asking. On the other hand, we also had some of the sweetest interactions. When the brain goes into hyper vigilance/survival mode because of 2 or 3 scammy situations, it’s hard to not see everything as a threat, even though the majority of India isn’t a real threat.

If you notice the driver going in a wrong direction, point it out. Tell him to go in the right direction or let you out right here. And never, ever go into any shop he unexpectedly pulls up at and tells you to go into. Be brave. Stand your ground.

@@superman9693 that is debatable as well. I have lived in florence my entire lifre and have gone all around italy and i never got scammed. The closest thing to a scam that I encountered was refugees asking for money to buy food, when in reality they bring it to the organized crime in exchange for drugs ecc. If you consider very high prices for low quality food in the historical center of cities aimed towards tourists a scam, then yes, there is a lot of it. But nobody will come up to you and outright scam you like in poor countries: you just need a nice travel guide to find the most genuine places where food is extremely good and the price is low. Have a nice day!

My really old dad got on a bus in india and couldn't pay in Euros (pretty much everyone was happy in our tourist hubs with euros, but state bus driver couldn't accept it) and needed the bus ride to change money. Some random guy just stepped up and insisted to pay, turns out he studied in germany, they had a lot in common and my dad got great travel advice.
I on the other hand took a taxi driver, negotiated a price (which was more than fair I was assured by people knowledgeable in the area) but later on the driver wanted more money. That was very unpleasant experience, but other people (taxi drivers too!) got involved, politely asked what was the problem and got even angry on my behalf. In the end all was fine for me, but it certainly left a bad aftertaste.
But that is tourist hubs for you, I had experiences like that in multiple parts of the world.

Just put this out there: it’s not like violent gang scamming or stuff like that it’s basically just grossly overcharging. E.g. in the UK an hour’s taxi costs £70 in India its £7 for a tuc tuc and that’s being overcharged. Tout’s are everywhere: an other example this one guy got me to buy loads of stuff on my first day and in the end he would’ve got like £30 out of my on commissions. Not giving change is another. But it’s all that sort of stuff - nothing like spiking drinks.
