Lying "Blind" Scammer in India (How to Avoid Sympathy Scams!)

- I didn't expect to be scammed in Northeast India by a man pretending to be BLIND. I was busy filming the Ema Market shopping tour video in Imphal, Manipur when this guy approached me asking me to film his sad story about being blind and needing money to purchase all the medications the doctor had prescribed him. He even had the prescription to show me the costs!
As soon as someone starts asking you for money or bringing money into a conversation in India, you know it's a scam. Especially when they AREN'T blind and they have this fake prescription all prepared to show you.
They target Westerners and our sympathy. It's called sympathy scamming when they start telling you a big sad story to gain your sympathy and scam money from you while you travel around India as a tourist. It's very common in India.

Some legitimately blind people actually do wear glasses. Almost all legally blind people have some remaining vision (some light/shadows, blurry silouettes, etc.), so glasses can actually help make the most of it.

actually you can wear glasses if you’re blind but it’s not like the type of blind you’re thinking about when its like pitch black or something. there’s something called being “legally blind” and sometimes you can see a tiny tiny bit but you still need so muchhhhh help

The prescriptions are for pain, any eye damage that is accidental in an operation is guaranteed to cause immense pain and good pain meds like morphine and codeine are outrageously expensive for even a middle class American. My grandfather was blind and wore glasses it’s really not uncommon, and partially blind people know if you have a camera it’s incredibly unnatural the way you talk and ask him his story and push something towards him (which he can see in terms of shadows) he knows there is a camera you’re interviewing him 😂

How to tell a person isn't blind
- If they look directly kn your eyes.
- They react when somthing approaches them.
- some reason they drive
- some come with a companion.

In Panama, I was in our hometown eating on the patio of a restaurant. This guy just walked up off the street to give us his tragic story. He showed a paper supposedly saying he's unable to work. Another time it was me and my dad at another place with a front patio. I looked up and suddenly this guy came up demanding money for the bus like it was his. He put his foot on the table to show us his blisters near our food. Talk about killing our appetite! We were so pissed off, and told him to get going. We don't even sit on outdoor patios of restaurants anymore, because these random idiots think White Americans (like my dad) just swim in wealth.
