love how you seemingly indicate on the preview how we can tell the color is different enough while forgetting to pan the video over in editing- just found that funny these videos are super helpful though, very nice
Just came across your page, and man, looking forward to going through your videos; your pixel art is sweet, i have done some pixel art, but not that great just yet, some stuff comes out better than i thought sometimes, but I spend way too much time on a single object, I haven't gotten into animation yet, but I have done a few isometric styles, even a mini golf game concept, but hopefully i can learn more with you videos, keep it up. I love pixel art more than any art style in the world, that is because i grew up with 8/16-bit gaming and just fell in love with it.
12 year developer here, got into coding, because of playing around making platform games in my youth. But since I started coding professionally, I haven’t played around making games anymore. Your videos makes me want to get back into it. I absolutely love your teaching style. And especially your knowledge of colors. I’ve watched 6-7 of your videos by now, and I’m pretty sure I’ll watch them all :). Probably multiple times. Thanks. You’re awesome.
Damn, mate, this is amazing. I never was an artist (because, well, my scope of competence is very distant from art), but this... This just cracks me up. In a span of minutes, 64x64 transitions through "empty->green circle -> what a disgusting mess -> hey, this looks half decent -> hey, this is legitimately resembles a tree". Damn, pixelart never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for sharing this!
I appreciate your tutorials a lot, I’ve always loved art but never really tried so watching your videos an doing research helps me more and more, thank you 😄
Hey man I just wanted to say that I love how you approach these tutorials! Very easy to follow along and learn from! Do you think you can make a dirt tutorial?
As a programmer with no knowledge of art, I find your tutorials the best I've ever seen on pixel art. Thank you so much for this incredible content! After my current project, I'll start drawing some pixel art for a new game! Are you planning to do any tutorials on simple animations? Tree swaying in the wind comes to mind :)
I was having so much trouble with such a basic art form. Thanks for helping me understand not to over complicate things. That i can still get the point across with minimal use. Idk why but this is way harder than normal art lol but I enjoy it and so much faster.
I just started doing pixel art for my own little game and I'm impressed. I suck at art but Aseprite is amazing and your videos are eye opening! Thank you.
When I was watching the leaf part of the tutorial, I immediately thought that that technique could be really cool on dragon scales. Also, those are some nice looking trees. It sure is a hell of a lot better than I could have ever hoped to do, without the video.
Basic rules of distance in painting are that saturation decreases with an increase in distance to the viewer. This is opposite of that convention, bit its pixel art...
Nice tutorial, i always struggles when tiling a tree, but i think i understand a couple of things better now, would try to put them to work and see how it ends, thanks bro.
lol my bad I honestly didnt intend that. I did it to draw attention to it. I removed the red on new videos. It could also lose me views if people think they seen it.
I may be a little late, but wow, this helps a LOT. I am garbage at drawing tress, although with the help of this, I have gone just a tiny bit better at drawing them, but my color scheme is looking waaay better, thanks a lot
FYI: draw boldly, don’t be afraid of going beyond borders, constantly switch between brush (pencil tool) and eraser, add details when shape and lights are defined. Use pixel by pixel only at final stage when refining your result, yet don’t sink in. Thank me later for boosting your creativity and speed.
Hey, just a tip regarding the picking of lighter colors - instead of HSV you can use the Lightness slider in HSL to increase the brightness, it will also influence the Saturation and Value in a very similar way to how you adjust it in HSV.
Basically: Make silhouette, give darker color than grass Give outline Lighten outline around top Put shading on to make it look 3d, think about form, contour Put highlights, should be circular, NOT V, NOT U, make center point run up Fill color should get lighter on top darker on bottom Add leaves, make them like a zig zag (dont put a leaf right under it, stagger) Add leaf overhang to another section Make the shading not so smooth, push shading upwards, should be taken care of by circlular fills take outline, put inside, remove spot (to make look not smooth) Take color from upper section, put on edge (to look rounder) put shadow on bottom section randomize outline on highlight, make lighter on top draw leaves outline using lower color (if same color, use darker color to divide) put highlight on edge of leaves
Would be interesting to see a take on how to communicate this detail in a gameboy palette (e.g. if you're working with something like PixelVision 8 where you can emulate the gameboy's limits)
Sick tutorial as always, Pete. Could we get a vid on top-down house construction? That seems to be a major struggle, even among experienced-ish pixel artists.
The reason why that can be bad is because with pixel art a lot of it is interpretation. Its almost as if things are an icon of the real thing. So if you use weird colors people will miss interpret what you draw.
Man, your tutorials are the best! Have you ever done a tutorial about character making in pixel art? Like, 16x16 character, 32x32 character? If he has already done one, could someone pass me the link? Please. (excuse me for any grammar errors, I’m Brazilian, trying to speak English fluently 🇧🇷😉)
Man I was trying to get into pixel art, just found you and your tutorial are awesome, funny and simple, keep this way. Looking to purchase aseprite or pixeledit dunno what to start with
2:20 That's what I've done earlier today :3 I'm working on a building and it's got a lot of detail in it right now. Too much. I'll first finish it in a detailed way and then just delete some detail. Right now it doesn't match the rest of my world.
Your tutorials are great dude, I've been trying to practice this technique of leaves by you and another pixel artist, it's tough fully grasping it, but it seems easier at lower resolutions. I know your work seems to specialize in the very small resolution/gameboy resolution canvas, but would it ever be possible to show this same technique in a larger resolution/closer up to the tree, and from a side perspective rather than above? If not, all good! I'll try applying this tutorial to other techniques, this was helpful! Your stuff is so good.
Really enjoyed this video. Had trouble following a few parts but was able to make a tree. I have trouble understanding what the “leaves” are and what’s background with more layers. If that makes sense.
hello, im just wondering if you could please tell me what do you use to record a time laspe? also your tutorials are amazing! I can (sort of) draw rocks and all sorts of useful things! thanks a bunch
Awesome stuff!! Just found your channel and am inspired to try pixel art again. I heard on your rock tutorial that you give out keys for this program when you get some - please think of me when you do because I'd really like one :^)
They recently released a new version of GB studio that shows off a new menu system in the reveal video, but I can't find any documentation of how to use it. Would you consider doing another GB studio tutorial about how to use the new menu system?
Your tutorials are very very effective I watched your tutorials and in as little as a week every one thinks I'm some sort of pixel art wizard But there is one thing I still can't get right it's energy effects like energy charges and fireballs , no matter how hard I try I still can't get it right please can you do a tutorial on it, I would appreciate it .
hi pete, thanks a lot for your material, it's been so useful to me. i noticed you only do top-down view tutorials, do you have in mind to do any side view?
I've learned more in the past couple months watching your vids than in all my time spent analyzing the work of others. Thanks a ton.
Thank you! I will make plenty more!

Hey, thanks! I've been working on my GB Studio game and I decided that I should do a new tileset so thanks for making this!
I noticed something:
Not always, but usually, drawing a tree is just like drawing a bush with a Big Stick of wood.
lol yeah
i love all your tutorials ! you explained it clearly and easy for a beginner like me to understand. cant wait to learn more
I just started doing pixel art for my own little game and I'm impressed. I suck at art but Aseprite is amazing and your videos are eye opening! Thank you.

there are a few ways to tile trees, I should make a video on it.
you're the only person in the whole world who i've heard say vibrance instead of value
Bruh...thank you!! I followed this and made my first tree! Subbed!
I never know if I already watched your videos because of the red border on the thumbnail. Its the third time I am watching this, nice trick.
lol my bad I honestly didnt intend that. I did it to draw attention to it. I removed the red on new videos. It could also lose me views if people think they seen it.
you can tell if you’ve seen it if the border goes over the pete sprite
I first had a doubt was it a tree or a bush while scrolling
Can you post the colour palette? I am colourblind so trying to match the colours you use is really hard...
6:22 did I just hear the voice of Sans the Skeleton?
You sure did
21:07 maan this tutorial is great!

Basically:
Make silhouette, give darker color than grass
Give outline
Lighten outline around top
Put shading on to make it look 3d, think about form, contour
Put highlights, should be circular, NOT V, NOT U, make center point run up
Fill color should get lighter on top darker on bottom
Add leaves, make them like a zig zag
(dont put a leaf right under it, stagger)
Add leaf overhang to another section
Make the shading not so smooth,
push shading upwards, should be taken care of by circlular fills
take outline, put inside, remove spot (to make look not smooth)
Take color from upper section, put on edge (to look rounder)
put shadow on bottom section
randomize outline on highlight, make lighter on top
draw leaves outline using lower color
(if same color, use darker color to divide)
put highlight on edge of leaves
*Hey, nice tutorials as always, can you do one tutorial about ''sprite perspectives''? Thanks!*

Good idea , yeah I'll make that someday
yeah this is one of the many ways how to do trees.
Do you think making my tile sets weird colors is unique or just dumb? for instance my grass is blu and rocks are purple ???
The reason why that can be bad is because with pixel art a lot of it is interpretation. Its almost as if things are an icon of the real thing. So if you use weird colors people will miss interpret what you draw.
