- This video shows the steps to change the gear oil fluid on your Volvo Penta outdrive or sterndrive. The process is very simple and takes only about 30 minutes. Make sure you have the right tools ready to go and the correct Volvo Penta synthetic gear oil for your outdrive. And make sure you have a bucket ready to go as well.

Thanks for the video, what size was the drain bolt or was it a hex?
The drain bolt at the bottom behind the propellers? It was an 8mm Allen head bolt.

You pull the drain first the the vent. And the reverse after filling. This will stop oil going all over the place and you

Can you add the gear oil from the top or do you have to pump it from the bottom? Thanks!
That’s a good question. I’ve never tried it that way. I would be concerned about air bubbles being trapped and not showing the level correctly. But I guess you technically could add from the top?
Must be pumped from the bottom on most models but some of the older ones are filled from the top though.
how do you set the prop timing between the two?
Install the props so that at no point both prop blades end up at the top together
Anyone can help I have 2001 larson with Volvo penta sx it trims down but not up but I hear it wanting to trim up but doesn't move also it has fuild
Have you checked the fluid in the reservoir for the trim pump? That’s the first thing I would check. Then also check to make sure your battery is charged fully.
Any idea how to remove the lower unit?
I’ve never removed the lower unit. But there are a few videos on UA-cam that show it in detail.
