What an education. He's seems abrasive, but really he's a nice guy. He's got his opinions, but I also think he feels that having opinions is everyone's right. You can agree to disagree, I suppose. He is SO knowledgeable. He brought a high level of craft and innovation to the medium. I loved American Flagg as soon as I saw it. Can't believe almost forty yrs have flown by. Part of the problem or maybe to just say what exists is an American comic medium that is dominated by superhero genre. Obvs. Cartoonists working outside of superhero comics in other genres don't seem to possess the drawing illustrative chops that artists like Kotzky, Caniff, Fawcett etc. had. It would be cool and be good for the medium if cartoonists with a high level of artistry with today's sensibilities were producing different stories in other genres for entertainment but also with real staying power and worthy of posterity. Definitely there are incredible artists making inroads in horror and sci-fi/fantasy and detective genres. I can't wait to see other important genres developed with a commensurate level of technique style innovation. Personally I'd like to see more historical genre, fiction, but especially non-fiction. Dave, thanks so much for doing this interview. I pledged to get Fargo when I heard about it. I'm excited to see it. Fargo is at a little over $43K right now. It's goal is $60K.
Howards art is very interesting to me because it is good and bad at the same time but I am almost but not quite fascinated by it. It looks like he posses action figures for reference and draws them exactly how he sees them.
2:30 See those Red, Blue and Green books in the back!? That's the FAIRBURN SYSTEM OF VISUAL REFERENCES!!!! Invaluable tools for illustrators
Can never get enough of Chaykin. His substack is a must! He is, indeed, a prince:) Thank you for this, David!
1:04:43 You become INNOVATIVE BY WORKING FROM LIFE!!!!!! LIFE has INFINITE IDEAS!!!!!
Thanks again David.
