There’s a video on this site where someone points out a good few anecdotes of people conquering depression by playing souls likes. An odd concept on a surface level, but with the story of most of them being “the world sucks and there’s not much to do about it, so carve your own niche into this rotten husk and roll with the punches”, combined with the satisfaction of when you do git gud and make a name for yourself, it’s practically hard coded to make you prove that you’re as worthy a person as anyone else. “Sure, the house needs repairs that we don’t have the cash for, but I whooped Malenia through Sisyphean determination, we’ll deal with it”. They said it a bunch in those forums, and it’s a good phrase to keep in mind: don’t you dare go hollow.
Having written a thesis, partly bout that topic, I'd certainly agree on videogames having quite an interesting influence on society and a person itself. Though I suppose there's quite a lot of research to be done, the connection of videogames and people are hard to deny, I liked your summary👍🏼

Some people complain that in Souls games, they don't understand why they're fighting certain bosses or who they are. They believe bosses should have an introduction. However, lore-wise, you're a nobody facing someone far more important than you and nobody owes you a explanation.

Can we all take a second to appreciate just what a fantastic point this really is? If you think about the worlds in those games as real, living (dying) worlds, then this makes perfect sense.
The best thing about souls games is that while everything is dark and cruel and brutal there are still people you find who rage against this idea, regardless of the outcome. People like solaire who suffer defeat and failure and a loss of all they believe only to continue on and help in a fight that is not their responsibility, and even the ways other players interact matter too. Players will mark hidden walls or warn you of enemies or just say something silly, hell just entering a boss arena and seeing messages and knowing all of those are there because people beat this boss gives you hope, and seeing so many people not only celebrate their victory but rate other peoples celebrations positively gives the impression of a community celebrating together even if they can’t see each other. And finding random summon signs or players who beat a boss but choose to stay behind to help out others stuck on that boss, the chaos invaders can bring whether they harm or just hang out. The most brilliant things of the games aren’t the dark world or interesting stories but the fact that the community is so tight knit. And I think radahn is one of the most interesting examples of this, because while his fall is sad the way he dies is almost hopeful. Radahns close friend invites others to fight radahn in a festival to put him out of his misery, in the process bringing others closer together. Fantastic video. Not only is the level of polish surprising for a channel this small. But you’re also an incredible writer and have a great understanding of atmosphere. It’s clear a great deal of time went into your selection of music for this and it pays off, keep up the great work
I love how well-researched this is. I can see how much effort was put into writing this script and saying it to the audience in a way that evokes emotion. Not a lot of people can manage to do that, but you're talented at this. Hoping to see more video analysis and deep dives from you soon! You have another fan now.
One nitpick. The pale king didn’t try to control the radiance at first, only as its influence became apparent and the infection emerged did he try to contain her
not me finishg a snnuy video and searching for something else to watch while eating just to go back to snnuy without realizing. Great video tho im really excited for the next one ^^
off topic kinda but Spiderman ps4 has such a overwhelming end game it feels so hopeless when the sinister six jumps you, breaks your ribs, releases an airborne bio weapon, a giant prison break, aunt may dying, and your father figure/inspiration becoming evil and hurting people just made everything feel so hopeless
gotta say, really cool video! personally i never really thought of the hollow knight setting that way, and... its actually pretty damn accurate! cant wait to see what is up next!
I was surprised, especially after you said that games don't have to have a happy ending to be meaningful, that you didn't mention SOMA. That's a game that utterly annihiliates your soul throughout, twists it one last time during the ending, and yet it is still one of the most beautiful game narratives ever created. You should play it, if you haven't already.
I LOVED this video. Criminally underrated, in my humble opinion. I had to skip the parts about Dark Souls and Inside, but more than anything else this video made me want to try Blasphemous. Outstanding job with this video, Cosmic Hour. If you see this, what made you want to make this video? Was it a life experience or a particular game/moment within a game? Maybe you said why in the video, but I forgot.
Laika: Aged through Blood has a very cruel and hopeless world in a wartorn country where the natives have to fight of a facist, colonizing empire ( A war that has lasted 600+ years).
I believe that Bloodborne and Elden Ring are almost perfect foils to each other. Different side of the same coin type thing. Elden Ring has large themes of gold and glory, where your character, and many characters you run into in the game, are searching for the glory of becoming the Elden Lord. However Bloodborne is Darkness and Despair. In it your character is simply trying to survive the night and tries to put an end to horrors that take place in that world. You want no glory, you seek no status, all you want is peace
That's what I prefer about Bloodborne, I really can't relate to my character in elden ring going through all that pain, violence and suffering, dying over and over and over again, just to become a lord, just to have power
Stumbled on your video after this, like lots of people probably did, and I'm pretty into it. You have a niche, and it's one I like more than the usual meme, indie hit, or AAA title niche most gaming accounts seem to do. At least, most that have any chance of being found the way I did you. Not quite the same niche I have in my favorites (quieter games more about the experience than the thrill; Inner Space, Everything, Proteus, TOEM, A Short Hike) but I can relate to being more focused on the details and experience of the game over the gameplay itself.
This video made me realize the type of games I like. There is also Little Nightmares, game play is very similar to Inside, and the world building is very intriguing
Another one I recall is BioShock. The radio interviews showing people before their transformations into violent and deranged splicers. Little sisters who show how innocents are used to breed profit. Big Daddies groaning painfully inside their suits. The entire city is festered with ruin and blood. And that's only a side plot in 2: The end of Zeno Clash 1 has a creature trying to civilize the Zenos by way of introducing a jail and a group of enforcers, which has led to many people becoming an enforcer not out of a sense or even grasp of morality, but for self-servitude.
