Serge respected Aria's father so much that he did not let him experience even a wisp of bad energy. He trusted Aria's father so much that he trusted only him when leaving. And he while he kept in touch with others, he must have fought himself from contacting Aria's father simply to protect this one beloved and genuine friend who had allowed him to just be.
Exactly! Serge protected the people and the memories that mattered most to him.
I think the same too.

we love to see it
Yep. This is high quality content. Not something we typically expect on Buzzfeed.
This was very well made and interesting and moving too.
YES!
His film style is so similar to the movie Searching, not sure if he was going for that, but it's a really well done video
Aria deserves a HUGE raise and recognition from Buzzfeed. This was a Netflix level documentary that we got to view for free, and he put himself and his whole family in front of a camera to be vulnerable for us. Give. Him. Recognition. Buzzfeed.

A beautiful tribute for Serge. He died in 2001 but you and your dad searching for him in 2020 kinda makes me think that this is how a person lives on. Each of all of you have a little piece of him and you putting the pieces together is just very heartwarming. The good, the bad, you tell it like it is. Makes me realize that I don't know my friends as much as I thought, as I don't reveal all of me to my friends either. As I grew older I realize that it's normal for people to come and go in your life, for many reasons, and makes me treasure the ones that are still here through decades.
In his last photo, he looks to be in a lot of emotional agony, and honestly looked like he wanted to break down and scream. While his ex-wife smiled with ease, his looked forced. I honestly feel sorry for him.

There were tears in his eyes. He had already made the decision to kill himself and knew this would probably be the last picture with his wife.

Buzzfeed, you better recognize that this is some of the best investigative journalism you’ve ever had in your company. Aria, you did a fantastic job ans this goes to show we may think we know people but some of us are stuggling deep down and far more than we let others know. My heart just broke several times throughout this video. Well done.
Well, if there is ever a movie coming out about this, Hugh Jackman should definately play the role. He looks like wolverine in some of these photos. Almost doppleganger similarity.

But aren't moms always like that, they have no chill. Mine certainly is that way lol
I agree. I think the mom knew even in the 80s
For me it's the opposite - my Mom wears the rose-colored glasses and my Dad will spill the tea.
And his dad calls him bebe!! So cute i want that family dynamics ;;
To me, "who he really was" is who your father knew. Sadness and depression I think come from the pain of what others do to us, real or perceived. Whereas the happiness he displayed when around your father was perhaps because he could be himself and forget, even if for a short time, about any complications or sadness in his life when he was around your father. That would also explain him not telling your dad about living with his sister nor other things because your dad was his safe haven.
Having a cold father does not give you an excuse to abuse your partner, in fact, nothing does.

One mystery I cannot figure out is why some people come into our lives and why some people go. Others become a part of you. Some friendships feel like they'll last forever and others end far too soon. Not every friendship is meant to last forever. What does last forever is the pain when that person is gone.
You answered yourself, everyone has their own life, and your life is very busy, people move on.
Depends on the situation. People grow apart naturally, in rare occasions they end with death, sometimes a person has to, and sometimes it's amicable in separation.
The pain is there after it and sometimes not at all for some people and it really depends on the situation. What lasts forever could be pain, but on the other side of the coin is the mark that a person made on you even if it's small. You aren't yourself without others, they reaffirm or change who you are. That impression they left on you is something that carries on even after someone is gone.
Wow, I'm crying over the loss of a friendship and person whom I have 0 connection to... Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for making this.

I WAS LITERALLY THINKING THIS
This could easily be a very riveting movie. Great content, but most of all, sympathies to Aria's father--I guess we all have different versions of ourselves that different people get to experience, and it must be difficult to uncover Serge's other 'selves' that may have tainted his experience of his friend. But for sure his 'version' of Serge is just as authentic, just as impactful.

A phenomenal documentary - so brilliantly personal, painful, and sometimes joyful. I am so happy I found this quite accidentally on YT. Aria - you and your brother are to be so commended for the effort, the time, the emotion... everything you invested in this investigation. Kudos to everyone.
This was beautiful. I respect that Aria had some serious ethical concerns about the investigation and how the original aim of finding someone somehow turned the narrative to who this person really was.
What I learned was that we all have skeletons in our closet. Some do it daringly while i guess most of us keep it to ourselves. We’re all just humans with multiple facets, we do good and we do bad. I had some concern if Serge would have wanted his story to be known on the internet in this manner but I want to thank him because we should live our life doing what we enjoy, I also learned what we shouldn’t do.

This is the most complicated story I ever watch but It was beautifully crafted. Serge story Is not a typical story we read from the books or watched from the movies. What I like about this documentary is how Aira continued the project even though he knew that it will not turn out the way he expected it to be. Sometimes, people are just like ice bergs, even for those who are closest to us, there are parts of them that remains a mystery to us.
This documentary was kinda cathartic and personal. Despite the hidden darkness of Serge's complex background, there was something light and beautiful that came out of this tragedy. Brilliant stuff here!
I kinda get why Serge kept his life secret. Aria's father brought the best or the positive side in him and he didnt want him to get involved in his issues.
Sometimes it's best to let friends keep their secrets. The person they are with you may not be who they really are, but it let's them be someone they wish they were. Of course it may not be healthy, but if they can't tell you, then having someone see them positively may be one of the few things they cherish.
@@goldcherries that's me lol only with certain friends
My thoughts exactly...
Also not wanting to disappoint his father. He probably saw the man he wanted to be in Arias father.
I never thought of it like that, it's a nice way of thinking about it.
It’s crazy how everyone saw the same person so differently. To some he was the happiest person who lit up every room and to others he was deeply sad and lonely.
I kept thinking he sounds like he was a bit bi-polar but also just had a challenging life.
Some people are good at hiding parts of themselves and are complex. I have friends that have a very different view of me to other friends because I’m outgoing but I’m an introvert, with introvert friends I’m loud and outgoing because they understand I get burned out quickly, but extroverts don’t understand that. It also said he could be abusive and hiding the abusive side of yourself is part and parcel of being abusive. Add to that someone like the father who only likes to see the good in people and that leaves you with people seeing very different sides of a person.
Sad and lonely?
2 words,
Robin Williams.
Many people try to deal with their pains and unresolved past by suppressing them under mundane pleasures, like drugs, sex, dancing, acting, alcohool or whatever gives them the source of dopamine and serotonin they need.
But nobody can live a life of constant pleasure, our body cant take this, we need to rest, and at this moment, when these people can't distract themselves they will get in touch with their dark emotions again and get depressed, sometimes overly depressed. Some of them abuse it on drugs so they can pass out so they dont have to deal with all of this, others just cry and isolate themselves till the next day, others chose to end it and a few actually seek for help.
Some pathological conditions can
"accentuate" this behaviour, like depression, bipolarity, borderline, etc.
But the most important part of this behaviour is that, when these people are derpressed, they usually isolate themselves, so even the people that knows them personally, sometimes they dont know about this depression and only see the portrait of that human full of joy.
As other person said it above, a good example was Robin Williams and many other comedy actors and professional clowns. (not all of them, obviously, but some of them, yes)
If you know someone with a similar pattern of behaviours, try helping them realizing that they can get professional help with their issues. Psychologists and psychiatrists deal with problems like this everyday and they can provide the person with very useful tools to cope with their emotional/psychological problems.
Sorry for the broken english, not a native speaker.
As sons you did your dad proud🥰 cases like this is one of the reasons I like the internet. You both reached out to others in different countries and some were more than willingly to help. I wish we all could get along this well and help one another. Thanks for sharing🥰
This was a crazy good piece of reporting, previous commenters have said netflix quality, I would say that's a slight understatement even. Just very elegantly being unprententious with very cool editing, as if it were happening on your own desktop. But then the topics it touches on are the polar opposite, extremely deep, and shedding light on some of the most significant revelations one could have of interpersonal relationships. Just came to say thank you for making this!
This made me tear up, especially when his wife described him as a 'free soul'. Ahh such a beautiful documentary thank you for sharing it with us.
It is touching, it is beautiful...to me that’s part of the problem. It moves towards the positives. The reasons to have empathy for the negatives. Seeming to forget that one of those negatives is the mental/physical abuse of multiple women until the domestic violence number comes on the screen.
katharine1229 It wouldn’t be right to demonize him either though
Aupa Atleti I think simply reiterating the message/tone from when they found out about the abuse and laying that into the framework of the conclusion the same way, that would suffice. That’s not demonising anyone while also not attempting to explain away the reasons with empathy. It’s the very thing abusers do to their victims during the cycle of abuse. That did not happen, which is too bad.
katharine1229 Agreed. I’m a victim of childhood abuse so I understood. I would like to make a movie on my father someday neither glorifying or demonizing him but rather showing that he was a flawed individual just like all of us. To varying degrees but still.
katharine1229 Though empathy is required for me. Even for the most horrible person it’s important to be empathetic. Empathy is to understand another’s emotions not necessarily justifying it. There are reasons why certain individuals like my father act out and it must not be ignored. Yes they are responsible for their actions, but the root of the problem needs to be understood in order to fix it

It's kind of terrifying how you can track down someone, even someone who was purposefully hiding and who died over a decade ago just by using the internet.

Me eleven minutes and ten seconds in "Please, don't let this sweet man's heart get broken"
Me too
This family seems very wholesome, particularly the father calling his son bebe, the mother knowing her husband so well, the brother shrinking back in horror whenever something terrible is talked about. Very precious to see such people exist.
You should see his sons UA-cam channel
GoldenLipstick i think it’s lovely also, it’s just nice to see.
Asians do that like my mom lol
every Asian is like this
I noticed that too! They really love each other and have the kind of relationship I wish I had with my family!!
Brilliant editing. This story has me wanting for much more. So well done.
So amazed at the quality and heart in this video. It captivated me. I loved the sweet interactions in Aria’s family. This should win some sort of award.
This was crazy. It sounds like a movie. It should be a movie and. Serge need to be played by Hugh Jackman.
YESSSSS HUGH IS PERFECT FOR THIS
It really needs to be made into a movie. So crazy and interesting and heartbreaking all at the same time.
Maybe he is Hugh Jackman...
also noah schnapp as young serge
Yassssss
I wish Serge was able to see himself the way Aria's father saw him
That’s what everyone says after someone self-destructs ☹️ I could say that about so many people who have died from suicide or overdose...that’s why it’s so important to be there for each other now, in every possible moment. It could save a life.
@@saraha1703 I agree. Sometimes it's not easy to see that the person is going through some stuff because they know how to hide it well or people in general don't know how to read the signs :/
Who’s Aria?
@@paoloaguilar1298 the guy that you saw during the whole video. The one that solved the mystery for his father.
MariaMinanda ohhh thanks!
This was emotional, brutal truth, amazing..... What a great story, even though the ups and downs, all we leave behind is our legacy, name and memories.
This was absolutely a beautiful story of a man that truly no one knew.
This story hits really different and I don’t even know these people. In the pictures serge looked like such a good person, but that just shows that everything isn’t as it seems.
I know it brought me to tears. How do you know if you know someone? How do you grieve if you don't know where they went?
Anonymous Voice, there are no “good” people. There are only people.
We all do bad things. Serge suffered his abuse and chose to continue a cycle of abuse.
He clearly didn’t have a very content life, though. I think that may have been punishment enough.
It brought me to tears for different reasons. He was troubled but you can tell there was some good there too. He obviously loved teaching and he made a huge impact on willema
The uncle I never got to meet had similar circumstances surrounding abuse. He was a charismatic person, the life of the party. However his father was extremely abusive and that came back to haunt him when he fell into alcoholism. This story really hit home for that reason...
I have a similar story, cousin and best friend of my father was also on the outside very happy, charming and nice, but had huge troubles with alcohol and drugs, was at least what I saw, verbally abusive to his wife and committed suicide when I was 10, and the oldest of his 4 kids was ~15. messed up a lot of people around him
Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks his dad’s friend looks like Hugh Jackman
I thought it was hugh
Thought the same. Hugh Jackman could play him in a movie about his life
It was the ONLY thing I saw lol
drea rose I was definitely thinking the same, u are not alone. I've heard about ppl having a double and not related too so yeah. And it wasn't until his dad said he left and never saw him again, I was like this doesn't sound gd at all.
monzorella1 I legit thought that’s him
This is a beautiful tribute to a Free soul...Even when he was in darkness he shined his light so bright to others and made his mark. What a beautiful free soul..i could picture him happily dancing salsa in the heavens
This was such a rollercoaster of emotions. Thank you so much for telling this story and providing closure for your papa, Aria!
Aria conversing fluently in multiple languages when I dont even know how to pronounce 'Serge'
same tho

I mean he has a thin American accent when speaking French, but he talks well.
I noticed that too, and I was thinking if they were to make a movie based on Serge's life, Hugh would be a shoo in. Bitter sweet story, ergo that is life. I enjoyed it.

Papa is such a precious biscuit. And the fact that he calls his son “Bebe” is also adorable.
Bless him.
Also, this is beautifully done. Just amazing. I love Shane and Ryan, but this is beyond, and this guy deserves the credit for it. No one come for me.
I was hoping someone mentioned Bebe!
Bebe is so adorable! I wonder if they know that, in brazilian portuguese, it means baby.
Joanita D'Carla in French it also means Baby.. Enfant is baby also. There’s many dialects to French. My family speaks Alsatian. It’s the Alsace Lorraine area where the Germans invaded. They were forced to speak German for years. So when they went back to speaking French, they had the slight German mixed in.
Told with such sensitivity. Papa and sons are so tenderhearted.
Fascinating investigation of your father's long lost friend, Serge. Sounds like he was a complex man who many felt was their best friend yet from him, who he really was was never revealed to anyone. Tremendous loneliness.
This is extremely HIGH QUALITY content. Amidst all his goofiness, we sometimes forget how good a filmmaker Aria is. Great stuff.

This is such an amazing piece of investigative journalism, so emotional, thrilling and raw. Thanks for existing.
This needs to be a series him trying to find different people this is the most entertaining thing I’ve seen
Nah but fr,
Man, this video was massive fun, but try to be a little sensitive to the emotional turmoil this story put Aria through. If he would be up to searching for someone else for our entertainment's sake, that would be great, but expecting a regular series made out of such a tough job is maybe a litte too much too son.
YES
I agree. I wish he could find my elementary school friends. I moved & I wish to know how they’re doing.
He wants to do that. He asked people to email him if they have anyone they want him to search gor.
makes me remember a quote:
“Every man has two deaths, when he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name. In some ways men can be immortal.”
That's a great quote!
that quote reminds me so much of "Coco"
Hitler is immoral then
@@legendaryplays33 "Immortal," you mean? And yes, he was immoral as well.
Wow. this was a sensitively told, beautiful story that really shows the complexity of human beings and our relationships with each other. Quite lovely and touching. Well done! Thanks for sharing this with us all.
Stunning work. Beautiful tribute.
Someone call hugh jackman to play him in this movie.
Hell yeah!
I was thinking the same thing
I think more a willem Defoe but Jackman is on point
Haha I thought he looked similar
Hahahaha, yeah
