I had a 1975 chevy monza 350,replaced the 2 barrel with a 650 dual pumper (in a few minutes mind you) and wow!,6"cragers up front and 10" ones in the rear.header pipes drained before the rear dif' and removed the rear seats except for the fold down.I even moved the front buckets back 6",after all I'm only 6'5",but what fun!350 auto trans and always chirped the tires in 2nd,with or without a foot on the pedal!162 mph on the 5 at night.Find one,try it,and you will fall in love with pure emotion.-K
My 74 had a high hp 327 and a muncie 4 speed. Yeah, baby!
77 with 305 and automatic. Car took me through college and put down 1 legged smoke shows on the regular.
Love your video because back in the day I'd was 17 just learning to Drive and now I'd wish got a Monza but in 1979 I'd got a 1979 Mercury capri.
I had a new 79 Monza 2+2 and it was beautiful
Yet another genius taking video in what sounds like a wind tunnel.
A friend of mine received 300.00 $ ticket for 300 foot burnout in one of these 25 years ago.
The 305 dropped a real nice one legged strip. Had the Town Coupe in college and she never let me down
Knowing how popular the V8 Vega conversion was, I’m surprised the V8 Monza wasn’t more popular.
These are great looking cars. I'd honestly love to get my hands on one of these. It would be an awesome sleeper car.
Ran a 75 model back in the day....Had a .30 over 4 bolt main 350, 780 holley on a edelbrock tarantula intake....nicknamed it the perfect sleeper....4.3 ltr emblem on the femder and all. No rearend to speak of...how that little pumpkin stayed together I'll never know. With the right occupants strategically placed in car I could lay down posi but the Amoco 13 tires got warm real quick
My dream car when I was 13. The wheels are epic!
GM got it. They saw people like me building V 8 Vegas, and they made these beautiful Monsas, oh some had that nice thing called...Air conditioning!
My mother had one of these it was a two door coupe got it new Came with a small block v8.. I had my fun with it!
My dad had a white and blue version of this car, reminded me of a mini Camaro.
Chevy needs to do a modern retro monza !
And make it to last.
I had a 78' mazda coupe when I was in high school back in the early 90's. We shoved a small block v-8 into that car........I got a couple speeding tickets for that modification......and one for 'excessive accelleration", lol.
my new favorite car from the late 70s... maybe i still love the trans am... but wow that thing looks great!
This is the car I’m getting soon with the black widow spyder on it gonna do an engine swap
Great looking car!!! My buddy had one in the early 80's. What a runner!!
An exceptional example
Beautiful car! I too had one but it was white with black trim and an original 305 cid and auto trans.
,
beautiful spyder take care of her and show her alot of love.
So Beautiful
Cool turbo-spoke wheels!
My original hot hatch, I had a yellow 1980 with the 3.8 4 spd. Heaviest clutch I've ever come across. It was my second car and to me it felt fast. With a great deal of imagination you could see a similarity with a Ferrari as others have said. What a fun car! Very tail happy but easy to control and predictable. Used to just beat on that thing with no mercy and nothing ever broke, unlike the new volkswagen that I replaced it with. Haven't bought a new car since, and that was 30 years ago. A fella I worked with had one with a 305 with a holly 650 double pumper. Had to loosen the engine mounts to get to the rear plugs iirc. That thing was crazy! A little hard to get the power to the pavement.
Thanks for the rip down memory lane.
good ole buick 231 v-6
u had a buick 3,8 v6 in it ?/ did u put it in it ?or it came that way ,/? or was your car a starfire ? they were great engines ,,,thank u so much ,anton
@@antoncomments Came that way. Was a plain Monza, not a Spyder. Canadian model. It was about 30 years ago and maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I'm sure I read that it was a buik motor somewhere. It was definitely a 3.8 v6.
They were great fun! I had two of them. It's a shame that they weren't built to be long lasting. The V-8s also had a problem with breaking the motor mounts and putting the fan through the radiator if you floored it. It's a shame.
Mine was the 2+2 model, can't remember what year. We had a 327 in her and a 4 speed from a Vega. People don't believe me but I swear its true, from a dead stop using only 2nd gear 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. You could get her going using 4th gear from a dead stop, hell of a clutch in that thing.
It looks like whoever designed the Monza took some styling cues from the 1971 Ferrari 365GTC/4. Take a look and you'll see some similarities.
Changing spark plugs must be fun
Wood block on the oil pan, remove motor mount bolts....and jack up a few inches. So many of these never had the 8th plug changed!
Cut a hole in the fender well to get to back plugs
I changed all my plugs once without raising the engine it was hell on Earth
Always wanted to take 1 of these and put a 400 small block in it but...keep it quiet.
No tach? This may only have the Z02 Spyder appearance package including the decals and not the all important Spyder equipment Z01 package as someone also mentioned.
Strange that it does not have the 5-Litre V-8 emblem on the front fender as well. I ordered mine with only the Z01 equipment package, 305 V8, 4 speed manual trans, no ps, pb or ac, and it has those emblems. It also has the chromed “Spyder” emblems where the 2+2 went on the lower front fenders of regular Monzas.
Enjoyed that car thoroughly on back roads and interstates over 10 years and retired it not long after it passed 100K miles. Without all the extra unnecessary accessories and no smog except for the cat, I’m even able to access all of the plugs without unbolting the motor.
The weakest part has been the clutch, too small for the job, or possibly that flexible cable. Never had clutches fail on any other car, but these only lasted about 25K!
It’s been dry garaged for the past 40 years and this may be the year that it is awakened from its deep slumber!
I live for the day I own another 77 monza. I loved that car!!! I was young and stupid and sold it. Sigh.
I was stupid and burned the hell out of mine. Every chance I got I was leaving black strips on the road. I would love to own one again but they are a rare find these days
Very nice.
I would keep that car the way it is it is so awesome
Mine was a 1976 with a 262 V8, Edelbrock Performer and 600 vacuum secondary. You could barely close the hood with that intake. Damn thing kept breaking welds in the front sub-frame and the factory tach would switch between 4-6-8 cylinder settings so you never really knew how many RPM's you were turning. But I still loved that car and wish I still had it.
I had the same car as you in the same engine and the same problem with the front end had a two-barrel though factory I tuned enough to get 28 miles per gallon highway at 70 mph.
i got a 2+2 but been re done 6 point in it and have 13 x 225 x 50 sst rims
80mph speedometer. brilliant. hhah. my vega i built had 2.73 monza rear end and springs. I had to mod lots but mine you could change plugs on :-)
has 262 v-8..... the torque bar from the trans to the rear end always got loose and beat up at the rear end from doin brake stands
Drove a friend in Toronto to pick up his new Red Spyder when I first saw it I thought wtf, when we went for a cruise I was thinking wtf. Seeing this video many decades later still thinking wtf.
been off road and stored since 94
That's great! Looks amazing. Put it back into the time capsule!
would this be a good car for a new driver?
what size tire on that 13 or 14
Cool car and can be very fast with a built V8!!!!!
UGLY??...Are you kidding me? That's one FANTASTIC AND RARE Monza. I had a white Spyder with black trim in my youth with the factory 305 V8. Unfortunately in the smog era the 5.0 V8 only put out 160 hp...very anemic. I don't think you could order a posi unit and I know mine couldn't spin the tire(s) from a dead stop or even at a brake torque, that was until I replaced the 305 with a hopped up 350 but you couldn't tell by opening the hood, everything bolted back up perfectly. NICE CAR!!!
How beautiful she is!
And a drag strip drive way! WOW
My aunt had one of these same color exterior tan interior. I can remember thinking: why would you buy this and not the camaro?..what did I know I was 11
Where is this car now?
Why no license plate?
This car only has the Spyder Apperance Package, and not the Spyder Handling Package. If it was a "real" Spyder, the dash would have a tachometer and a metal Spyder logo under the Monza logo just in front of the doors.
Thats correct,i had a 77 in 1980,and it had those on it.
It cornered pretty good, only the brakes are not made for Europe.
Made also a timing chance, and had a lot more power.
Sorry but, I'm 100% sure, you could have ordered the Spyder package Z01 Handling and then Z02 Decals, without ordering the Rally Gauge pkg that included the tach. The Spyder logo you mention would only have been on car's that only ordered Z01 (Spyder suspension) but did not select the Z02 Spyder graphics package. (Z02 could only be ordered if Z01 was also ordered). "Z01 only" cars were Extremely rare at about 1000 per year 77/78/79. Z01 + Z02 was about 7k per year.
It's not a real 100% spider, looks like it was converted over to look like a spider, that's not a original GM color, I've had 4 spiders all mine including my 75 2+2 Had the tack, even the V6 cars had a tack, this was a 4 cylinder converted over to look like a spider, the 4 Cylinders didn't have thacs for what? Might as well get a 4 cylinder Camaro and put the Z28 badges on it.
That was never a 4 cylinder
@@floridaroadways I just purchased a 1980 Pontiac Sunbird formula with a 4 banger. This car has been Frankenstein and who knows what it came with? And what people in there journeys have done to it? The 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage offered a 4, 6, 8, and I just got off your page, looks like your 10 years old, what do you know about cars kid?
that's same color as one I had but mine was a 2+2 I had but mine had factory slip pos rear end and factory in dash tachometer thought the spider would have had the tachometer in dash as well
A genuine Spyder and not a replica, right? So, why is there no tach?
had one of these as a kid. I believe it had a 289 V8 in it.
+zestydude87 They had a 262 CI small block. A real oddball engine only used in that car.
zestydude87 my girlfriend in High School had one. Yellow with black decals. It had a 305 2barrel. Very stout and strong on the low end. Great exhaust sound. 289 was a ford engine. I ran one in my 65' pony car.
289 = FORD MUSTANG!!!
What would you sell it for?
that would have been cool to see
Came with a 305 right
anyone else ever have clutch problems? firewall would bend and need to be reinforced. i saw a lot of these cracked in junk yards.
clutch cable would always bind up
i had mine 81-90. we learned to do the clutch our selves after a few times. it would last about 14,000 miles no matter if dealer did it or us. it was paid for so i just figured it as 1 car payment every time we did it . initially i went to olds but they wouldnt stand behind defect. it was actually a fun car to drive and was very rust free for those days.
Yep, fixed it with the metal from a tool box and a coffee can! Even made a template as it would only last a few months!!!
Time Capsule!
Front clip - leftover Mustang parts
Rear - left over Camaro parts.
AM Radio and no tachometer? Wow!
My Brother had one..And all it did was spin the tires..lol
except fourth gear..Maybe it was a bad motor which sometimes
happened.
WTF UGLY?!?!? Are shitting me it is by far the cleanest monza ever and it is a peice of art this should be in a museum
If it was mine, I would put an LS3 motor in it.
Yah, but can it do a burnout
I always forget about the Monza, but they're pretty neat!
@dlambo1 They came posi, my dad's is.
Nice looking car, fast in a straight line. But way to nose heavy with a V8, the motor is way to far forward. A twin turbo V6,with big after market breaks, would make this thing go as it was meant to.
Your right about the breaks, but i disagree about not going around a corner. My 1977 2+2 was better than my 1998 z28 around the corners. The engine was lover on the Monza giving it a lower center of gravity. There is footage on UA-cam of Monza`s racing around the world.
I owned a 1975 Monza 262/4speed 2.92posi in 1980 to 1982. Most unreliable car Ive ever owned but it also had 92,000 miles on it when I bought it and had been abused.
Have you ever tried to change the spark plugs in that car trust me you don't want to it's enough piss off the Good Humor man
People get these thign to make a kickass pro street car.
looks like opel manta b
Too bad the wind was so bad.
i think monza done right by that i mean a lil better than they were would have really fxcked the mustangs for years to come should have been closer competition
262 v8
lost94133 I Say The 145 Horsepower 305 V8 As The 262 Was Only Available In 1975 And 1976.
California Monzas had a 125 netHP 350" V8 for emissions reasons... but good build up fodder...
Farmers doing well......
ORIGINAL PAINT ??? NOT! you can see where the inside door labels were masked off ! RIP OFF!
Not legit.
