Well, it's pretty much an improved version of 4U's guild quests. The RNG is toned down heavily and you have far more control. You can power up your weapon as you progress. Unlocking higher slots increases your attack power regularly and you can also pick between a few buffs. Trying to get armor skills is RNG, but it's very easy to get at least 1-2 skills on every single armor piece you're wearing that is beneficial to your build. If you want a really perfect set of skills... I guess you're in for one hell of an RNG grind. But if you're fine with good enough there's practically nothing to be frustrated about. It's probably the best postgame system in MH out there. For the ones who do want to min-max they can still try to obtain perfection, but for those who just want to beat everything it's pretty easy to settle for less and still reap the benefits.
I'll be honest, the more of these I do the less I want to do them... It feels like just an excuse to keep hunting the same old thing so you can get strong enough to hunt it again... Like, if your build is already taking the monsters out, what's the point of maximizing it even more? It's just an endless grind loop, and the only real reason to do it is just so you can do it more... Why? My current insect glaive build wrecked all the new title update monsters, no carts, about the usual time any other monster takes me, and while I enjoyed it I don't really want to hunt them more than I need to get their gear. The armor augments are totally random so you may just end up wasting a ton of time getting anything useful, and the weapon augments are so minor you likely won't even notice the difference. It just makes me think the Bee Movie line, "Worked hard your whole life so you can work hard your whole life!" I enjoy the fights but I just don't have the patience to farm the same monster over and over while it's constantly getting stronger and taking more and more time to kill, just so I can make something that MIGHT help me keep up... I could just... not do that, and probably be happier for it.
