I think you missed a couple things about 300blk in this video. 1) Round selection - 110gr loadings in 300blk hit a sweet spot in terms of kinetic energy and deliver substantially more from shorter barrel lengths than 5.56 does. You can get elite 110gr loadings from Barnes, Underwood, or Gorilla and 110gr V-max loads have been shown to work very well. This video was not really a fair comparison because you could have used much better ammo for the supers. 2) 30 cal - bigger diameter, theoretically bigger wound channel. The other significant advantage that you didn't mention is that 300blk uses 308 bullets which are already broadly available with excellent high end options. 3) Use considerations - 300blk is less gassy and suppresses better than 5.56. It's more optimized for shooting within 150 yards, which is what most civs are going to be doing anyway. It has also been thoroughly proven as a hunting cartridge - it's considered more appropriate for medium sized game than 5.56. It's got a good amount of mass to push through bone. In conclusion, I think it's an excellent round particularly for civilian use due to its incredible flexibility and use characteristics. It's pretty unique in offering the opportunity for an excellent home defense/CQB weapon as well as a medium game cartridge that you can shoot out of a barrel less than 10" long. Compact, capable, user friendly, and using extensively vetted 308 bullets.
This. There are so many more considerations to 300Blk than the seemingly intentionally narrow offering showcased in this video. It really comes off as braindead for a video. It would have been a much better video if different "off the shelf" rounds were used, like various Hornady offerings, or even Discreet Ballistics. Both brands that I can find at just about every gun store in my area. Specifically the 110gr V-Max, and the 208 A-Max rounds. Hell, even their 190 Sub-X has been shown to do massive damage.
I was shocked when he brought out the 125 gr. It would have been fair to have V-Max rounds for both as a comparison. You aren't shooting to those distances with subs reliably, not sure why he was trying. I love my Barnes 110gr too.
It's interesting because out of an 8.5 inch 300 blk barrel I can get more damage and similar energy on target within 100 yards than out of a 16 in 5.56 when choosing most comparable bullets. Especially if my enemies are gel blocks.
A lot of us use it not as a replacement for 5.56, but as a PCC replacement. I’ve got a 10.5 300blk that I would never choose over a 5.56 rifle for say, defending my country, however, I’ll take a 300blk over a PCC in just about any scenario
Yeah, I'm struggling with that issue right now. I've had a bug to build an AR-45 for a bit of a thumper of a PCC and boiled it down to perhaps a roller-locked buffer setup. Problem is I also would want to experiment with 460 Rowland pressures, etc. and then it gets much more complicated. Seems like 300blk would solve most of the issues but then that's another round I would have to stockpile.
300blk would be superior to a PCC I guess… even when you compare the cost to ammo…. HST for the home defense PCC cost about the same as 300blk sub but what Is more readily available to shoot and train with
True that. Pcc's are down right lame. Too much speed destroys pistol bullets and hard cast bullets just drive on through. I'd definitely prefer a rifle over a pistol or pcc.
I own both. I keep 5.56 in my go bag for the benefits that were mentioned in this video. However, I prefer 300 blackout for deer hunting and around the house work because of these key points: 1. I reload ammo and cast my own bullets. Cast bullets do not work with 5.56 due to the centripetal force applied to the projectile. I cast a 230 gr deep hollow point boolitt that drops deer where they stand. I can reload this round for less than ten cents a round and it’s good to 200 yards. 2. Speer makes a 150 gr gold dot bonded projectile that can reach 2100 fps out of my ten inch barrel. It’s good to 400 yards and drops deer better than the 64 gr win. Deer hunter xp in 5.56. Summary: I love it because I can make cheap effective ammo. I’ve even duplexed milsurp powders with it and had good results. I’m confident if shtf, I could make a decent single based powder from household chemicals that would reliably cycle in 300 blk. I cannot do that with 5.56. I know all this because I did it in 2016 when all ammo was hard to find. I love the content and thanks for all you do.

I don't have a lot of shooting and reloading videos yet due to the fact that I travel all 50 states for work, but they are coming. I'm currently reloading 5.56. I'm doing ladder loads for my group using Scott Satterly's 10 round ladder load process. I'm using SMP 842 milsurp powder that is used in the M855A1 rounds and SS109 projectiles that are used in the classic M855 round. For home defense, I love 300 BLK: super quiet with the can on, lower risk of over penetration, etc with heavy bullets. Didn’t build it to replace my 5.56 built it in addition to my 5.56 instead of a 9mm AR.
9mm AR is still the better option. You can buy 9mm hollow point ammo that performs better/as good than 95% of 300 blackout subsonic loads for well under half the price per round. 9mm 147 grains are naturally subsonic in 5" barrels so you can get an even more compact weapon if you stay with 9mm.
@@The-Flamingo-Situation here’s the thing though, if you’re using an AR it’s to easy to have a 9mm training upper in the same length as your blackout. So you get the cost effectiveness for practice and then get the benefit or rifle performance in an SMG package.
You’re a bit on the misinformed side, 5.56 absolutely is more likely to have less lethal over penetration than .300blk. You’ll get one of 2 things with blackout, pistol like or 7.62x39 lethal over penetration, both of which exceed 5.56 having seen all 3 used in an urban setting with misses.
As mentioned - terminal ballistics of the 110gr vmax (ideally out of an 8 to 9" barrel) is a very effective round. I run a Noveske 7.94" and no issues reaching out to 160 meters with Hornady 110gr vmax (4.5" group). I have not run terminal tests at that distance with the 110gr. All I know is, I wouldn't want to be hit with it!
If you're going that long you're better off with a 6mm Max, as just a little bit longer at 10 inches and you can get 3,100 fps with a 58gr V-Max. .300 Blackout will give you 2,025 fps in a 6 inch barrel which puts you ahead of 5.56 in energy with barrel lengths up to 12 inches.

It’s rough the first few months but things do get better and you learn to cherish the things you have together instead of wishing you had done all these other things. @@MattH-wg7ou Gel doesnt tell the full story. The 300blk is a 90% increase in bullet diameter and about 250 lbs more of energy delivered sub 50 yards when you compare the more common rounds. So youre getting a bigger hole with more punch. Theres plenty of videos of 300blk and 5.56 being put to use at anywhere from 50 to 300 yards on deer and the difference is extremely obvious.
I run an 11.5” barrel on my 300BO, typically running 150gr. I made the setup for home defense and close range hog hunting. Due to how heavily wooded it is where I live, you aren’t taking shots past 100 yards even if you wanted to so I feel like the caliber fits in pretty good in the environment I am in.
People make this mistake all of the time. 300 blackout was never supposed to replace 5.56, it was meant to be a quiet sub gun that when shit goes loud you can just change a mag to supers and have almost 7.62 x39 performance which makes it far superior to a 9mm or 45acp sub-gun which it replaced. That and you can way better performance out of 300blk with 8 inch barrels than a 5.56.
.300 blackout does not have even close to 7.62x39 performance. I’ll take an old shitbox AK any day over a fancy AR pistol in 300 thats triple the price in everything with less performance
When he talks about .300 blk not having versatility compared to 5.56, he comes off as not knowing what he's talking about. Seriously? 5.56 comes in basically 3 flavors; 55 gr, 62 gr, and 77 gr.; fmj and expanding. Not a lot of versatility there. .300 comes in 108, 110, 125, 147, 150, 190, 200, 208, 220 gr........fmj and expanding. But wait, there's more; subs perform out of barrels lengths of 5 to 12 inches and everything in between. Supers out of a 16 inch barrel. Hmmm.....which round has more versatility???
The 300 blk in this test was out of a 6.75" barrel and the 5.56 was out of a 10.5" barrel, that makes a huge difference. If the 5.56 were also shot out of a 6.75" barrel it will lose about 400 fps and have half the kinetic energy. Need identical barrel lengths to have a fair comparison.
Still wouldn’t be fair. The .300 is designed for short barrels. 5.56 is not. Yet the 5.56 would still be breaking sound barrier pretty heavily in contrast. It would just destabilize sooner. They are just apples to oranges. .300 vs 7.63x39 would be a apples to apples generally. They are pretty close anyway

What they've done here is concealed the short barrel benefit you mention. But perhaps a test with 12" barrel for both would make everyone happy.
My son uses a 300 blkout for deer hunting. Setup is basically like what you have here he’s 11 and the weight of the gun and recoil is very manageable for him. He’s killed deer out to 125 yards his biggest last year 215 lbs 9 point off the family farm at 80 yards. It’s also suppressed so his hearing doesn’t end up like mine. His is a psa and has ran flawlessly with no issues.

I’d love to see a 300blk “practical use case” video. I personally picked it because of the subsonic nature and living in an urban area with children in my home. If you want proper supersonic terminal ballistics, you shoot 110* gr V-MAX bullets. Also, get an 8-10" barrel. It's also no surprise there's more energy transfer from a supersonic round vs a subsonic round.
@@peady64yep! However, I'm cheap and reload, so buying 1000 v-max bullets is a much easier pill to swallow than 1000 of those Barnes. But they do seem to work exceedingly well.
Now compare 5 inch barrel to 5 inch or even 8 to 8 inch barrel. If you're looking for the smallest psd or cqb package I think you'll find 300 outshines the 5.56 at least at those combat distances and size constraints. Not to mention the 5.56 fireball and boom in a small space. the 110 vmax for super has much better ballistics as well for the 300. Just some thoughts. Genuinely interested in what you'd find. For the most part nobody really owns or uses a 5 inch or 8 inch barrel 5.56 unless they’re just stupid especially if we’re talking about law enforcement or the military 10.3 is pretty much the shortest 5.56 barrel length that is actually widely used and it pretty much completely outclassed the 300 blk and if you consider the vast majority of people use a 16 inch barrel this video gave a very fair comparison

I thought the main benefit of 300blk was shorter barrel lengths for cqb? A 10" 5.56 will just blind you in the dark with a fireball and loses much more velocity. 300blk being .30 cal allows more volume in a shorter barrel for all the powder to burn. Its like making an Ar plarform based Mp5.
The barrel length of the 5.56 seems to be a big advantage in this comparison. The 5.56 is already going to be moving faster to get that explosive cavitation, but give it nearly 4" more barrel and it's going to be moving *_significantly_* faster still. Neither barrel length is ideal for either round, but it's still not an apples to apples comparison. Aside from that, in heavily wooded areas with thick underbrush, the .30 cal round should be more true through vegetation (according to Vietnam vets). There are a lot of areas in the Appalachians that are just as thick as any jungle environments I've been in. Entertaining video as always though. I like how this channel takes the tech seriously without taking the larping too seriously.
The dad advice…. Spot on. I was in icu almost two months ago and died for a few minutes. I wasn’t expected to come out of it. Drs and priest prepped my family for the worst and everyone said their goodbyes. I could hear some of them Including my son. Point being, when I woke up, it’s not the latest gadget we should be chasing after. When you don’t have something as simple as your health you quickly realize how valuable that and family is. All I want to do now is create memories with friends and family. I thank god for each day that I get to spend on this rock and have stopped worrying about nonsense and put that energy towards being positive and thankful. Ballistics and all are cool but just send it!!!!!
I don’t know how barrel length was not mentioned as a reason to choose 300blk in this video. I don’t think anyone is giving up 556. The reason to get 300blk is that it gives you a considerably shorter barrel with comparable terminal ballistics out to 300ish yards, coupled with the fact that it can be turned into a mp5-sd with a magazine change. The fact that all parts are interchangeable with an ar15 except the barrel is nice. Also in a dedicated platform like the rattler for instance you can fold the stock and have these capabilities in a jansport.

The only advantage i can think you are going to get is long range accuracy (with the 300) which will most likely be a huge difference and benefit to the 300. But it would be fun and interesting to see.
I have a 300 BK for inside home defense. My 45 ACP is a hearing damage machine with a too long follow-up shot time. My AR15 is too long for hallways and bathrooms. My 300 BK also has a JP Enterprises recoil buffer spring which, in combination with a 8" suppressor, makes the recoil super soft for quick and accurate follow-up shots.
300BLK is a subsonic round for AR15 platform with respect to 556 logistics. You can do other things with it, but there are better options. There's always better options, but given simplicity for logistics, 300BLK cannot be beat when going subsonic with the AR15 platform.
I too have a 300BLK PDW within reach at night that has an effective suppressor. As a home defence weapon, I think it is unmatched when you consider that you will soon be talking to 911 and responding officers. Not being in a daze from close quarters engagements when your future depends on thinking clearly makes a difference.
It is indeed very important to be able to communicate with 911 dispatcher and LEOs, to keep yourself from getting killed after you defended yourself.😂 To be fair tho, 5.56 with a decent suppressor is only a bit spicy but still much quieter than a handgun, it won't make you go deaf.
You don't talk after an incident to law enforcement. You can easily parrot "I was in fear for my life and took steps to minimize the threat. I need to go to the hospital and will give a statement later". Lots of good resources on how to interact post incident. Have LEO friends who've told me that most of the department isn't there to help but to hit their metrics.

Compare the 220gr 300 subs to the 9mm 147gr subsonic it was designed to replace, though.... Plenty of enemies been taken off the board with an MP5K. That's the POU.

I could be wrong, I don't know everything. But in a heads up 115/124 FMJ 9mm vs a 220gr FMJ 300 Blk, it's going to be such a one sided victory for 300 Blk.

I actually have this issue with a lot of his ballistic dummy tests. I get they are stupid expensive but you can't necessarily draw proper conclusions on round effectiveness if you are using the same dummy for 4 different calibers.
You always pick the shortest 300 barrels for these comparisons. Using a 10.5" 5.56 75gr you're around 2400fps, and 10.5" 300blk 110gr is over 2200fps .. Then consider 300blk offers specialized payloads for a wider range of application and benefit.

Why didn't you use the 110 grain Barnes TAC-TX bullet in 300 BLK. That is the gold standard in supersonic 300BLK ammo. Hornady 110 grain A-Max and V-Max rounds are awesome as well.
The history of the .300 blackout starts with gunsmith JD Jones. He developed the cartridge as the 300 whisper to be used in the single shot contender pistol in a barrel length of less than 12”. He also chambered it in a bolt action rifle for his wife to take on a kudu hunt in Africa. She shot a 600lb plus kudu with the round. It is more capable than most know.
I think with the ballistic test all the talk about the gnarliness of .223 fragmentation at higher velocities misses a point: a shot in a quickly fatal area is quickly fatal, a shot in a non-quickly fatal area isn't. Expansion is more of an afterthought. Plus when hunting something heavy like kudu, all that extra mass/inertia has got to help it get through muscle tissue much better than a round that just shatters on impact

It's not even a debate for me. I have put up all my 556 and now I have 300BLK in several configurations around my place. I will never need more than 200 yards here in Georgia so I feel I am good to go.
Or, and hear me out on this; 10mm PCC. If you are using a short barrel anyway might as well use a cartridge that maximizes performance out of that shorter barrel. You can optimize the 10mm for that a lot more than the 300.

I’m in North Georgia. It’s hard to find outdoor ranges in these parts to shoot long distance even if you wanted to. The longest distance I’ve ever shot was 300 yards, and that was on someone’s farm a couple hours from me. Unless you live on a farm in South Georgia where the land is flat and open, there’s very little reason to even take a caliber’s effective range into consideration. While I’d like to have ARs in a few different calibers other than 5.56 / .223 just for shits and giggles, .300BO really has the best use case scenario going for it given how wooded it is here. Add to that that it’s easy to suppress, can be used to take medium game like deer inside 200 yards, and allegedly doesn’t over penetrate walls as badly as 5.56 or 9mm. That sounds like a winner to me.

My 2 cents... I personally loaded the rounds for a guy who took an Elk with a 300 blk. 220 grain HUNTING bullets with 11 grains of powder. The Elk was taken in a dense forest where you hardly get a shot out to 100 yards. Most hust the area with lever action brush guns.. Bullet performance is highly important. "Energy "Dump" is what kills. Also, I believe most rounds can be around 7-9 grains of powder. I'm not sure of the math, but a guy can build a bunch of ammo with only one lb of juice powder. That's what I learned from 300 blk. Most are buying FMJ...
Ok so I have a question from someone who’s never gone hunting, if a fast light bullet can be (for lack a better term) deflected by thick brush, can a fast heavy bullet like a .308, .30-06, or 7.62x54? Or is the consideration mostly for slower, heavier cartridges like 7.62x39, .300 BLK, and .45-70? Basically, is it speed or weight that causes problems in brush?
I load the 110gr VMax in my 10.5" 300BO. It's a solid performer. With the 300BO supersonic ammo, the 10.5" barrel does gain some good velocity over your 6.75" barrel in the comparisons.
Don't get me wrong, I also have 10.5" pistols in 5.56, and 7.62x39. I like them all. It just looks like the comparison in the vid was kind of tilted by way of barrel lengths, and ammo choices. I still enjoyed the vid!

I think of 300BLK as basically a slightly more ballistically optimized 7.62x39. It has its pros as a sub-300 yard gun. Also as others have pointed out, a 10-16" barrel will be much more equivalent to a 10.3 5.56.
I love the close. Bravo. I use a 9" suppressed 300 BO w/subsonic rounds for home defense. God forbid I ever need to defend the home, it would be great for me and the family to be able to hear... for many (hopefully) obvious reasons.

Informative and surprising. I would have expected the supersonic 30 cal bullet to be better than a similar 556 super sonic. Having said that, I think that the 300 blk would be better at medium range, through a car windshield or door skin than a 556. Did you test that?
I agree with everything said about the 300BLK but would like to raise two more benefits of the round. Being a lower velocity round, it is within the 1500 Joule limit for a lot of shot distance steel target around here that cannot be fired at with 223/556 velocities. Also reloading 300BLK is potentially cheaper than 223/556 since very cheap lead bullets can be used and it requires way less powder. Costs are very similar to 357mag reloads for me.
Both rounds do well within their mission assignment. 5.56 is excellent for mid distance engagement, 300AAC subsonic is best for indoor CQB. Any round that hits you is the most dangerous round fired.
@@k-tz5jg True, but it all disbalances when you go to larger rounds, i.e 7.62. Stopping power is great but often times it doesnt penetrate kevlar. 5.56 is great for longer ranges id say. And 7.62 is the way to go if youre fighting insurgents, or even CQB (Yeah some might not like this but i want the close ramge threat fucker down as soon as possible when im clearing)
Lock picking lawyer reviewed a prior version of the stop box and it only had 6 combinations. Not 6000. Not 600. 6. Otherwise the Stopbox guy is right that you should be picky about your lock mechanisms. Not all are created equal, there are downsides to electronics, and many boxes have cheap and easy to pick back up key access. Also, his claims about a metal box shattering are bogus. We like metal for things like boxes and structures specifically because it doesn't shatter, it bends. It is true that you can bend a metal box badly enough that it won't open, ruining your box and losing access to what's inside, but that's why non-junk manufacturers make them fairly thick. Thick boxes require a lot more force to bend, you're not going to do it by dropping it, throwing it up in the air, or even throwing it against the wall as hard as you can.
I forget his name, but, I have seen one of those storage unit guys throw all of his safes in the air, and let them hit pavement to bust them open. I did see one where he had to get tools to get into it, but most bust open after a few throws.

The 125 gr weight in 300blk has been shown to be marginally effective. However, the 110 gr weights have great performance in gel. The 110gr Barnes Vor TX does great and the 110gr AAC Sabre Blade also does great. In SBR the 300 blk in these bullets and grain weights outperform the 5.56 in SBR. I get frustrated when people use the 300blk in the wrong bullets and bullet weights and do comparisons. I love 5.56. But, the 300blk in proper weights and bullets is great for self defense and 150yds and in in SBRs

300BLK only makes sense when running subsonic ammo out of a suppressed SBR AND only make sense when you already have a couple other standard 5.56 ARs AND you have money burning a hole in your pocket. If you don't own your own home & have multiple credit cards, skip the 300BLK. But if you have money to burn and you want something that is closer to a suppressed 22 sound wise while impacting like a 9mm, go for it. Otherwise.. steer clear. Just go 5.56 or if you have multiple credit cards (like me), just stick to 9mm. If you're stuck on the whole 30 cal thing, 6.5 Grendel & 7.62 are also available options in the AR-15 platform or moving up to the AR-10 for 308 is another. At the end of th day, it will only ever matter for very few of us.

Wrong. 9 inch barrel effective range is 440 meters from the military standard. Thats is 481 yards. So please read on actual information for saying something

Imo for most people the main advantage of 300 blackout isn't the subsonic performance. It's that you can have much shorter barrel lengths with good ballistics. A 6.75 inch 300blk w/ a can is MUCH shorter than a mk18 with a can, but has the same terminal ballistics with supers. Subs aren't useful for defensive (and most offensive) purposes, if someone is trying to kill you terminal ballistics are so much more important than hearing safety.
Also, why wouldn't they compare the same barrel lengths? This entire "comparison" is already utterly invalid based on the fact they're running a much longer barrel for the 5.56????
@@ericpettyfishing I load a 110gr Barnes Tac-TX that does 2175 FPS from an 8.5" barrel, which is 1,156 ft-lbs of energy. A 77gr MK262 out of a MK18 is 1,000 dead, and a 55gr Gold Dot is typically sub-850 ft-lbs out of the same barrel length.
300 Blackout was made to solve the 9mm ballistic problem and it solved that and it gives you a better long-range compared to 9mm complaining that you're car can't tow enough ok heres a solution but now my 18-wheeler won't fit through the McDonald's drive-thru

That 125 grain cartridge is pushing 2300 fps with a 16" barrel and about 2050 out of a 9" barrel. Probably only going 1750 out of thus 6.5" barrel. Compare both barrels of equal lengths, blackout causes more destruction
I have 1 .300 gun, it is my HD gun with a micro REIN and a red dot running subs. I figure in a pinch I can grab and go in the house if something goes sideways. Other than that, I use other rounds. Also, I didn't need the reminder about my short life. I just turned 40 and it enters my head damn near once a day.

I think you missed a couple things about 300blk in this video.
1) Round selection - 110gr loadings in 300blk hit a sweet spot in terms of kinetic energy and deliver substantially more from shorter barrel lengths than 5.56 does. You can get elite 110gr loadings from Barnes, Underwood, or Gorilla and 110gr V-max loads have been shown to work very well. This video was not really a fair comparison because you could have used much better ammo for the supers.
2) 30 cal - bigger diameter, theoretically bigger wound channel. The other significant advantage that you didn't mention is that 300blk uses 308 bullets which are already broadly available with excellent high end options.
3) Use considerations - 300blk is less gassy and suppresses better than 5.56. It's more optimized for shooting within 150 yards, which is what most civs are going to be doing anyway. It has also been thoroughly proven as a hunting cartridge - it's considered more appropriate for medium sized game than 5.56. It's got a good amount of mass to push through bone.
In conclusion, I think it's an excellent round particularly for civilian use due to its incredible flexibility and use characteristics. It's pretty unique in offering the opportunity for an excellent home defense/CQB weapon as well as a medium game cartridge that you can shoot out of a barrel less than 10" long. Compact, capable, user friendly, and using extensively vetted 308 bullets.
This. There are so many more considerations to 300Blk than the seemingly intentionally narrow offering showcased in this video. It really comes off as braindead for a video.
It would have been a much better video if different "off the shelf" rounds were used, like various Hornady offerings, or even Discreet Ballistics. Both brands that I can find at just about every gun store in my area. Specifically the 110gr V-Max, and the 208 A-Max rounds. Hell, even their 190 Sub-X has been shown to do massive damage.
I was shocked when he brought out the 125 gr. It would have been fair to have V-Max rounds for both as a comparison. You aren't shooting to those distances with subs reliably, not sure why he was trying. I love my Barnes 110gr too.

It's interesting because out of an 8.5 inch 300 blk barrel I can get more damage and similar energy on target within 100 yards than out of a 16 in 5.56 when choosing most comparable bullets. Especially if my enemies are gel blocks.

A lot of us use it not as a replacement for 5.56, but as a PCC replacement. I’ve got a 10.5 300blk that I would never choose over a 5.56 rifle for say, defending my country, however, I’ll take a 300blk over a PCC in just about any scenario
Yeah, I'm struggling with that issue right now. I've had a bug to build an AR-45 for a bit of a thumper of a PCC and boiled it down to perhaps a roller-locked buffer setup. Problem is I also would want to experiment with 460 Rowland pressures, etc. and then it gets much more complicated. Seems like 300blk would solve most of the issues but then that's another round I would have to stockpile.
This is my thinking. I think if you see 300 as a "magnum subsonic PCC" round, it makes more sense.

True that. Pcc's are down right lame. Too much speed destroys pistol bullets and hard cast bullets just drive on through. I'd definitely prefer a rifle over a pistol or pcc.
I own both. I keep 5.56 in my go bag for the benefits that were mentioned in this video. However, I prefer 300 blackout for deer hunting and around the house work because of these key points:
1. I reload ammo and cast my own bullets. Cast bullets do not work with 5.56 due to the centripetal force applied to the projectile. I cast a 230 gr deep hollow point boolitt that drops deer where they stand. I can reload this round for less than ten cents a round and it’s good to 200 yards.
2. Speer makes a 150 gr gold dot bonded projectile that can reach 2100 fps out of my ten inch barrel. It’s good to 400 yards and drops deer better than the 64 gr win. Deer hunter xp in 5.56.
Summary: I love it because I can make cheap effective ammo. I’ve even duplexed milsurp powders with it and had good results. I’m confident if shtf, I could make a decent single based powder from household chemicals that would reliably cycle in 300 blk. I cannot do that with 5.56. I know all this because I did it in 2016 when all ammo was hard to find. I love the content and thanks for all you do.

For home defense, I love 300 BLK: super quiet with the can on, lower risk of over penetration, etc with heavy bullets. Didn’t build it to replace my 5.56 built it in addition to my 5.56 instead of a 9mm AR.

9mm AR is still the better option. You can buy 9mm hollow point ammo that performs better/as good than 95% of 300 blackout subsonic loads for well under half the price per round. 9mm 147 grains are naturally subsonic in 5" barrels so you can get an even more compact weapon if you stay with 9mm.
@@The-Flamingo-Situation here’s the thing though, if you’re using an AR it’s to easy to have a 9mm training upper in the same length as your blackout. So you get the cost effectiveness for practice and then get the benefit or rifle performance in an SMG package.
You’re a bit on the misinformed side, 5.56 absolutely is more likely to have less lethal over penetration than .300blk. You’ll get one of 2 things with blackout, pistol like or 7.62x39 lethal over penetration, both of which exceed 5.56 having seen all 3 used in an urban setting with misses.

As mentioned - terminal ballistics of the 110gr vmax (ideally out of an 8 to 9" barrel) is a very effective round. I run a Noveske 7.94" and no issues reaching out to 160 meters with Hornady 110gr vmax (4.5" group). I have not run terminal tests at that distance with the 110gr. All I know is, I wouldn't want to be hit with it!
If you're going that long you're better off with a 6mm Max, as just a little bit longer at 10 inches and you can get 3,100 fps with a 58gr V-Max. .300 Blackout will give you 2,025 fps in a 6 inch barrel which puts you ahead of 5.56 in energy with barrel lengths up to 12 inches.

@@MattH-wg7ou Gel doesnt tell the full story. The 300blk is a 90% increase in bullet diameter and about 250 lbs more of energy delivered sub 50 yards when you compare the more common rounds. So youre getting a bigger hole with more punch. Theres plenty of videos of 300blk and 5.56 being put to use at anywhere from 50 to 300 yards on deer and the difference is extremely obvious.

I run an 11.5” barrel on my 300BO, typically running 150gr. I made the setup for home defense and close range hog hunting. Due to how heavily wooded it is where I live, you aren’t taking shots past 100 yards even if you wanted to so I feel like the caliber fits in pretty good in the environment I am in.

The heavier bullet also does a lot better through brush and leaves. 556 can start tumbling if it hits leaves.

People make this mistake all of the time. 300 blackout was never supposed to replace 5.56, it was meant to be a quiet sub gun that when shit goes loud you can just change a mag to supers and have almost 7.62 x39 performance which makes it far superior to a 9mm or 45acp sub-gun which it replaced. That and you can way better performance out of 300blk with 8 inch barrels than a 5.56.

The 300 blk in this test was out of a 6.75" barrel and the 5.56 was out of a 10.5" barrel, that makes a huge difference. If the 5.56 were also shot out of a 6.75" barrel it will lose about 400 fps and have half the kinetic energy. Need identical barrel lengths to have a fair comparison.
Still wouldn’t be fair. The .300 is designed for short barrels. 5.56 is not. Yet the 5.56 would still be breaking sound barrier pretty heavily in contrast. It would just destabilize sooner.

What they've done here is concealed the short barrel benefit you mention. But perhaps a test with 12" barrel for both would make everyone happy.
My son uses a 300 blkout for deer hunting. Setup is basically like what you have here he’s 11 and the weight of the gun and recoil is very manageable for him. He’s killed deer out to 125 yards his biggest last year 215 lbs 9 point off the family farm at 80 yards. It’s also suppressed so his hearing doesn’t end up like mine. His is a psa and has ran flawlessly with no issues.

@@jesuslovesmebetter it’s a palmetto state 300 blkout ar pistol 10” barrel with a gemtech 300blkout suppressor and a BSA scope. All my ar rifles are palmetto state they work for me and what I do.
I’d love to see a 300blk “practical use case” video. I personally picked it because of the subsonic nature and living in an urban area with children in my home. I also like hear my wife yell at me about things. So…it helps with the possibility of a HD situation and losing my ability to get yelled at.

If you want proper supersonic terminal ballistics, you shoot 110* gr V-MAX bullets. Also, get an 8-10" barrel. It's also no surprise there's more energy transfer from a supersonic round vs a subsonic round.

Now compare 5 inch barrel to 5 inch or even 8 to 8 inch barrel. If you're looking for the smallest psd or cqb package I think you'll find 300 outshines the 5.56 at least at those combat distances and size constraints. Not to mention the 5.56 fireball and boom in a small space. the 110 vmax for super has much better ballistics as well for the 300. Just some thoughts. Genuinely interested in what you'd find. I thought the main benefit of 300blk was shorter barrel lengths for cqb? A 10" 5.56 will just blind you in the dark with a fireball and loses much more velocity. 300blk being .30 cal allows more volume in a shorter barrel for all the powder to burn. Its like making an Ar plarform based Mp5.

The barrel length of the 5.56 seems to be a big advantage in this comparison. The 5.56 is already going to be moving faster to get that explosive cavitation, but give it nearly 4" more barrel and it's going to be moving *_significantly_* faster still. Neither barrel length is ideal for either round, but it's still not an apples to apples comparison.
Aside from that, in heavily wooded areas with thick underbrush, the .30 cal round should be more true through vegetation (according to Vietnam vets). There are a lot of areas in the Appalachians that are just as thick as any jungle environments I've been in.

The dad advice…. Spot on. I was in icu almost two months ago and died for a few minutes. I wasn’t expected to come out of it. Drs and priest prepped my family for the worst and everyone said their goodbyes. I could hear some of them Including my son. Point being, when I woke up, it’s not the latest gadget we should be chasing after. When you don’t have something as simple as your health you quickly realize how valuable that and family is. All I want to do now is create memories with friends and family. I thank god for each day that I get to spend on this rock and have stopped worrying about nonsense and put that energy towards being positive and thankful. The reason to get 300blk is that it gives you a considerably shorter barrel with comparable terminal ballistics out to 300ish yards, coupled with the fact that it can be turned into a mp5-sd with a magazine change.
The fact that all parts are interchangeable with an ar15 except the barrel is nice. Also in a dedicated platform like the rattler for instance you can fold the stock and have these capabilities in a jansport.

The only advantage i can think you are going to get is long range accuracy (with the 300) which will most likely be a huge difference and benefit to the 300. But it would be fun and interesting to see.
I have a 300 BK for inside home defense. My 45 ACP is a hearing damage machine with a too long follow-up shot time. My AR15 is too long for hallways and bathrooms. My 300 BK also has a JP Enterprises recoil buffer spring which, in combination with a 8" suppressor, makes the recoil super soft for quick and accurate follow-up shots.

300BLK is a subsonic round for AR15 platform with respect to 556 logistics.
You can do other things with it, but there are better options. There's always better options, but given simplicity for logistics, 300BLK cannot be beat when going subsonic with the AR15 platform.
I too have a 300BLK PDW within reach at night that has an effective suppressor. As a home defence weapon, I think it is unmatched when you consider that you will soon be talking to 911 and responding officers. Not being in a daze from close quarters engagements when your future depends on thinking clearly makes a difference.

To be fair tho, 5.56 with a decent suppressor is only a bit spicy but still much quieter than a handgun, it won't make you go deaf.
You don't talk after an incident to law enforcement. You can easily parrot "I was in fear for my life and took steps to minimize the threat. I need to go to the hospital and will give a statement later". Lots of good resources on how to interact post incident. Have LEO friends who've told me that most of the department isn't there to help but to hit their metrics.

You always pick the shortest 300 barrels for these comparisons. Using a 10.5" 5.56 75gr you're around 2400fps, and 10.5" 300blk 110gr is over 2200fps .. Then consider 300blk offers specialized payloads for a wider range of application and benefit.

Why didn't you use the 110 grain Barnes TAC-TX bullet in 300 BLK. That is the gold standard in supersonic 300BLK ammo. Hornady 110 grain A-Max and V-Max rounds are awesome as well.

The history of the .300 blackout starts with gunsmith JD Jones. He developed the cartridge as the 300 whisper to be used in the single shot contender pistol in a barrel length of less than 12”. He also chambered it in a bolt action rifle for his wife to take on a kudu hunt in Africa. She shot a 600lb plus kudu with the round. It is more capable than most know.
I think with the ballistic test all the talk about the gnarliness of .223 fragmentation at higher velocities misses a point: a shot in a quickly fatal area is quickly fatal, a shot in a non-quickly fatal area isn't. Expansion is more of an afterthought. Plus when hunting something heavy like kudu, all that extra mass/inertia has got to help it get through muscle tissue much better than a round that just shatters on impact

It's not even a debate for me. I have put up all my 556 and now I have 300BLK in several configurations around my place. I will never need more than 200 yards here in Georgia so I feel I am good to go.
Or, and hear me out on this; 10mm PCC. If you are using a short barrel anyway might as well use a cartridge that maximizes performance out of that shorter barrel. You can optimize the 10mm for that a lot more than the 300.

I’m in North Georgia. It’s hard to find outdoor ranges in these parts to shoot long distance even if you wanted to. The longest distance I’ve ever shot was 300 yards, and that was on someone’s farm a couple hours from me. Unless you live on a farm in South Georgia where the land is flat and open, there’s very little reason to even take a caliber’s effective range into consideration.
While I’d like to have ARs in a few different calibers other than 5.56 / .223 just for shits and giggles, .300BO really has the best use case scenario going for it given how wooded it is here. Add to that that it’s easy to suppress, can be used to take medium game like deer inside 200 yards, and allegedly doesn’t over penetrate walls as badly as 5.56 or 9mm. That sounds like a winner to me.

My 2 cents... I personally loaded the rounds for a guy who took an Elk with a 300 blk.
220 grain HUNTING bullets with 11 grains of powder.
The Elk was taken in a dense forest where you hardly get a shot out to 100 yards. Most hust the area with lever action brush guns..
Bullet performance is highly important. "Energy "Dump" is what kills. Also, I believe most rounds can be around 7-9 grains of powder. I'm not sure of the math, but a guy can build a bunch of ammo with only one lb of juice powder. That's what I learned from 300 blk. Most are buying FMJ...
I load with 8.2-9.4gr, so at the max load with Berry's 220gr, I get around 750 rounds out of a pound of H110.

Ok so I have a question from someone who’s never gone hunting, if a fast light bullet can be (for lack a better term) deflected by thick brush, can a fast heavy bullet like a .308, .30-06, or 7.62x54? Or is the consideration mostly for slower, heavier cartridges like 7.62x39, .300 BLK, and .45-70? Basically, is it speed or weight that causes problems in brush?

I load the 110gr VMax in my 10.5" 300BO. It's a solid performer. With the 300BO supersonic ammo, the 10.5" barrel does gain some good velocity over your 6.75" barrel in the comparisons.

I think of 300BLK as basically a slightly more ballistically optimized 7.62x39. It has its pros as a sub-300 yard gun. Also as others have pointed out, a 10-16" barrel will be much more equivalent to a 10.3 5.56.

Informative and surprising. I would have expected the supersonic 30 cal bullet to be better than a similar 556 super sonic. Having said that, I think that the 300 blk would be better at medium range, through a car windshield or door skin than a 556. Did you test that?
I agree with everything said about the 300BLK but would like to raise two more benefits of the round.
Being a lower velocity round, it is within the 1500 Joule limit for a lot of shot distance steel target around here that cannot be fired at with 223/556 velocities.
Also reloading 300BLK is potentially cheaper than 223/556 since very cheap lead bullets can be used and it requires way less powder. Costs are very similar to 357mag reloads for me.
I don’t consider a caliber’s ability to shoot steel anything of value. That’s the most niche of the niche applications.
Both rounds do well within their mission assignment. 5.56 is excellent for mid distance engagement, 300AAC subsonic is best for indoor CQB. Any round that hits you is the most dangerous round fired.
I'd choose a 308 for mid range engagements over a 556. 😅 556 isn't excellent at anything except being able to carry a lot of rounds.

Lock picking lawyer reviewed a prior version of the stop box and it only had 6 combinations. Not 6000. Not 600. 6. Otherwise the Stopbox guy is right that you should be picky about your lock mechanisms. Not all are created equal, there are downsides to electronics, and many boxes have cheap and easy to pick back up key access.
Also, his claims about a metal box shattering are bogus. We like metal for things like boxes and structures specifically because it doesn't shatter, it bends. It is true that you can bend a metal box badly enough that it won't open, ruining your box and losing access to what's inside, but that's why non-junk manufacturers make them fairly thick. Thick boxes require a lot more force to bend, you're not going to do it by dropping it, throwing it up in the air, or even throwing it against the wall as hard as you can.
I forget his name, but, I have seen one of those storage unit guys throw all of his safes in the air, and let them hit pavement to bust them open.

The 125 gr weight in 300blk has been shown to be marginally effective. However, the 110 gr weights have great performance in gel. The 110gr Barnes Vor TX does great and the 110gr AAC Sabre Blade also does great. In SBR the 300 blk in these bullets and grain weights outperform the 5.56 in SBR. I get frustrated when people use the 300blk in the wrong bullets and bullet weights and do comparisons. I love 5.56. But, the 300blk in proper weights and bullets is great for self defense and 150yds and in in SBRs

But if you have money to burn and you want something that is closer to a suppressed 22 sound wise while impacting like a 9mm, go for it.

Yup 110-120gr Supersonic 300 Blackout out of a 16” barrel is like a AK 762x39 ballistically. Definitely better that 5.56.

Wrong. 9 inch barrel effective range is 440 meters from the military standard. Thats is 481 yards. So please read on actual information for saying something
@SFGiantsfan9797 maybe super sonic. But I don't trust Military standards. I do this shit for living. Super sonic .300 black from a 9" barrel your drop is still extensive. Subsonic even worse. The military standard is 16" even says so in the video.

Imo for most people the main advantage of 300 blackout isn't the subsonic performance. It's that you can have much shorter barrel lengths with good ballistics. A 6.75 inch 300blk w/ a can is MUCH shorter than a mk18 with a can, but has the same terminal ballistics with supers. Subs aren't useful for defensive (and most offensive) purposes, if someone is trying to kill you terminal ballistics are so much more important than hearing safety.

@@ericpettyfishing I load a 110gr Barnes Tac-TX that does 2175 FPS from an 8.5" barrel, which is 1,156 ft-lbs of energy. A 77gr MK262 out of a MK18 is 1,000 dead, and a 55gr Gold Dot is typically sub-850 ft-lbs out of the same barrel length.

300 Blackout was made to solve the 9mm ballistic problem and it solved that and it gives you a better long-range compared to 9mm complaining that you're car can't tow enough ok heres a solution but now my 18-wheeler won't fit through the McDonald's drive-thru

Anyways, 300 BLK replaces 5.56 mechanically. One cant shove a 300BLK into the MP5, they can only shove it into their MK18 (gun types for reference). So in any situation where one has a 300BLK, one could have had a 5.56.

That 125 grain cartridge is pushing 2300 fps with a 16" barrel and about 2050 out of a 9" barrel. Probably only going 1750 out of thus 6.5" barrel.
Compare both barrels of equal lengths, blackout causes more destruction
I guess bear in mind they're firing subs too, so I can't imagine the difference in velocity would be that drastic in this instance.

I have 1 .300 gun, it is my HD gun with a micro REIN and a red dot running subs. I figure in a pinch I can grab and go in the house if something goes sideways. Other than that, I use other rounds. Also, I didn't need the reminder about my short life. I just turned 40 and it enters my head damn near once a day.
