- A shortage of 7 million affordable homes didn’t happen overnight; it happened because leaders in Washington keep kicking the can down the road. Californians are counting on policymakers to deliver housing they can afford, so Rep. Porter emphasized the need for Congress to take action.

That’s not the issue. The government subsidizes the purchase of existing homes and we allow banks to create money for their purchase. This drives up the real cost. We need rebasement. Wall Street wouldn’t buy them if they couldn’t get bank credit to do so.
You do know several Democrats like Pelosi anda Republicans just the same were doing legal insider trading with stocks with laws that permitted politicians to do so until they were caught. Guess what Katie had to say about?

@@BDThomas Congressional records that nobody reads. Addresses should be given to an engaged audience. I don't care if it's just Congressional aids that can make it... People should be there, and the offices that don't send a representative should face consequences for opting out of the process on topics they don't have interest in, especially when it pertains to the economy, housing, food, foreign policy, budgets, and civil liberties.
Our "representation" has been an absolute farce since the 50's.
I’m one of those teenagers. I moved out of state in 2020 and I walked away from my home of 22 years. I had to walk away from the state I’ve known and loved because I couldn’t even dream of renting in CA. I miss my home state dearly and wish that one day I’ll be able to afford to move back and be a homeowner. Thank you, Ms. Porter for giving me and thousands of others a voice.

Can I ask why we are not using abandoned military bases to house veterans in need? They could manage it themselves and all service could be centralized. It seems logical. Also housing equals safety and safety is the root of sanity, without it nothing ever changes.

These bases are excluded from OSHA standards. Even modern bases have issues with mold, asbestos, etc. on top of needing to fix these issues, these bases aren’t generally located where a civilian population wants to live.

The one near me is walking distance to the ocean, has an ocean view and is less than a mile and a half from all the major chains, a hospital and a ton of services. Also, many restaurants, even several bib gourmand and Michelin star restaurants, maybe they would hate the military translator school, or the aquarium, no one would want to live where the average property price is well over a million, it’s just so awful to live in neighborhoods is it? You are so right! The base housing I lived in as wife and mom in 1972 is now part of a Superfund Cleanup site. The homes, the grounds, and the water supply are all contaminated.

For the last month I've been getting bombarded by investors wanting my home that NEVER BEEN FOR SALE. I live in Louisiana, one of the cheapest places to live. Most people I know cannot afford a home here.
The "Catch 22" here is that when they sell their homes homeowners want to make as much as possible.
They keep saying work hard to have a good life but even if you do, the bar keeps getting raised. Constantly priced out of the so called “good life.” It’s too much.
Those of us living on SS retirement will be living under bridges pretty soon if something besides talk doesn't happen.

As service member spouse who lived in a home with massive termites for four years In Milwaukee, WI where the person we leased from DID NOTHING to correct it, I support this message. I used to wake up to sawdust on my clothing due to greedy horrible people renting properties that were UN-RENTABLE. We couldn’t afford anything else. I will never forget those horrible people. they even took advantage of our neighbor & tried to keep our deposit. The worst of the worst.
As someone likely to lose my house of 40 years to a federal agency whose stated goal is to help people buy homes in the name of guaranteeing a predatory private loan I didn't even take out, I can say it's not just california.
It’s all over the country! They start out reasonable but increase yearly… by the time the rent creeps up, a 2 bedroom becomes $1700 in AZ. And it’s more costly to move as it is to stay!
I know that President Biden tried to have these problems better, but the homeowners and apartment owners did not want to lower the rent.
I am glad that Congresswoman Kathy Porter is also trying to reduce rent prices because it is not fair that we Californians have to pay so much money in comparison to other states.

An affordable housing crisis, a homeless epidemic, a climate emergency and meanwhile it’s still illegal to live in a tiny home… Katie needs to ad tiny homes to her list and understand that HUD has the power to change laws nationally. Also since 2020 they were given to power by congress to mandate inclusion of manufactured homes into all city zoning and they haven’t done anything.
As much as I appreciate the thought, we have many homes, the problem is they're too expensive. They would rather rich houses sit there, unused, empty than to have a family pay what they can afford to live in it. Rental is not affordable. We need to work on that. Owning homes will follow suit.

I'm so tired of people talking about making *buying* homes more affordable. You can't even rent now. I'm in California along with Porter, and she doesn't acknowledge this.
Also, she needs to revisit programs for building "affordable" units. Currently, they only require 15% of a new development to include "affordable" residences, and those aren't really even affordable. They also don't often even include parking, which is another issue. If there are several units built at the same hight rates, those expensive homes affect the prices of everything else.

This is one of the biggest issues facing Americans. Glad to hear Mrs Porter talking about it. She actually has a plan.

Not "one of the biggest" - it is the biggest issue facing us. The cost of shelter has risen far beyond affordability, and impacts every other thing in our lives.
Yeah but its not really full plan.
1. Tax credit for first home buying. Fyi these already exist - in Canada, Australia and UK and this initiative has failed miserably...... historically what happens is the credit amount gets added to the home price - so home that would cost $400K with a 10% credit - now costs you $440K because the credit is also doubled for the homeowner and thus it is in their interest to increase the home price to get a higher credit.
2. There is a reason 3D printed materials are not listed in major building codes. A major problem with printed homes you will see is that they lack structural components of a building meeting engineering standards. It is lunacy to just throw out IBC, IRC, AIA, ASTM, and ACI to reduce cost - this leads to SAFETY HAZARDS - not a good idea.
3. While it is good that Washington is cutting out large financial institutions from buying up properties, a major cause of this crisis is zoning - which Mrs Porter failed to once talk about! How in the world does one act like they have solutions for housing yet never once bring up zoning? The reason Mrs Porter we dont have multi-unit housing like aparatments is because apartments get zonned seperately from housing, where in the US most populated cities incentivize and in many cases mandate the existence of single family housing zones over any other zoning types for housing.
Granted this is a problem that has to be solved at the state and local levels of government, but to not even acknowledge this problem is ludicrious.....

But part of that plan is to ignore it until asked by a reporter and come up with a prefabricated answer that means nothing
Ms. Porter, here is an idea, make home ownership tax-free for primary owner-occupied properties. No property tax, no income tax on mortgage payments, or interest. All the government would have to do is reduce the budget to make this possible. This could be done my eliminating some government agencies. There is no need for a committee, this will work, for everyone. (Except Big Government democrats.)

Not far enough. Everything smaller than a fourplex ought to be confiscated if it’s not owner occupied.
If corporations are going to own single family homes, they should be required to either have them filled at a government monitored market rate and if they sit vacant, the company is charged said going rate of rent to go towards affordable housing programs.
They'll either get them filled, or start getting charged money and will lower prices quickly. And finally, if they choose to make the home qualify for the 'affordable housing' tag, then they get a check cut to make up the difference

Also in Chicago, Brandon Johnson's title transfer tax that lowered title transfers below 1M and raised it for properties over that would have kept many rentiers out of the market lowering the asset values of housing making it more affordable for the rest of us.

The house I paid $80k for 13 years ago, is worth $250-300k in the current market. Two houses on my street sold for over $250k this year. Bigger houses that I looked at buying 13 years ago, we in the $150-200k range, are now worth $350-450k. Home prices are absolutely ridiculous.
