We live not too far from McCourtie Park but have never visited. Never knew it had such interesting history. Now, thanks to your video, we'll definitely check it out. If you haven't been yet, you might enjoy a trip to Hidden Lake Gardens.

That park is just 3 miles from where my in-laws live. It's a really neat park. Wife and I got a tour years and years ago.... Just west of there is a restaurant called the "Deck Down Under" .. It used to have a hotel on top, but it burned up in a fire (decades ago)... Many family descendants that live and work in the area say that Al Capone frequently visited the hotel and restaurant on his trips between Detroit and Chicago... Glad you two had a great time. Hope to run into you and make acquaintances someday.

Very nice, you made it down my neck of the woods. I used to live a few miles west of there at the pie, lol. I had forgotten all about that bird house, the video doesn't do it justice, it is huge. I loved visiting McCourtie park and all the cement architecture in there. It had to take a lot if work. And the grotto, how lucky you were. That was another awesome. I live in the kitty korner of the county now, where the only interesting thing is watching steam train go through from Indiana to Hillsdale. Can't wait for the next one.

Chuck and Poppins, did you make it to St. Joseph Shrine, a bit further east, in the heart of the Irish Hills? You need to see the Via de la Rosa with the life-size stations of the cross made in the same style of el trabajo rustico. It is in a rougher state of repair (or was when I last visited it), but still impressive. I think Ralph Carona was the craftsman for that site, but my memory is rusty. --Rob Burg

Hey Rob! We did not this trip. We had a full schedule and couldn’t make it, but I think you mentioned it before. We’ll have to hit it on our next trip.

      Hey Rob,
We just visited the shrine in our last video on US12 (just ran across your comment - I missed it previously). I was quite impressed! I was under the impression that both artists did work, but that was Poppin's share of research, so I can't say for sure.

Omg. I've been watching the channel for awhile but didn't think I'd ever see you guys in my neck of the woods. Always great content. I've visited that park a couple times so it was really nice to hear even more in depth history than I was aware of. Keep traveling and sharing!

Thank you for sharing. Have you ever considered sharing something that lists the places you visit, like a goolge maps list? I try to keep track on my own of the cool places you visit that I too want to see. It would be awesome to be able to see all the places you visit on a map.

Perhaps MDOT should study those bridges. They've held up better than anything the state has built.

I live in Michigan & have been there twice. It is a really cool place. First tim I stopped there was in 1998. The McCourtie farmhouse was still standing up on the hill between the concrete trees.I was told that there was a tunnel that connected the house & the rathskeller. The house was demolished in the early 2000's. It is hidden gem that few know about

I have lived within 20 miles of that park all my life. I have seen it at its worst and at its better self. It's always a wonderful place to go for whatever reason. I have been to two weddings and five family reunions there and always enjoy my time. By the way, Mr. McCourtie owned the cement plant just a few miles east that spawned the town of Cement City.

i grew up across the road from the tennis courts and my family settled the area going back to the late 1700s. my dad would tell about going to the parties as a kid with his grandfather and what he remembers the most was the lights under the ponds shining up thru the water (unheard of at the time). at one time when i was all of 8 or 9 there were buffalo in there with the bridges and where the tennis courts are now. my buddy and i were really mad about it cause that was our playground growing up. on those banks we caught cooked and ate fish along with a few vegetables from the gardens (ours and the neighbors nobody ever cared if we took a few carrots potato's and anything else that looked ready from their gardens. AHHH the good ol' days!). not just booze but illegal beef during rationing times was also picked up and shipped to chicago and other places (
