    Been on the UA-cams lawn community channels for almost a year. I'll admit that your channel intimidated me then. This video here hit the spot today. I cannot believe how much I have learned in such a short period of time from you, John, Allyn, Jason, and so many others. And how obsessed I have become with it. Very grateful here in zone 8b.
    Thanks, Michael Segui

    Best video for me so far. Bought about a $1000 chemicals for my yard this year. Best tip was to use light before you do a heavy treatment. I read .57 oz per 1000 sf of Celius 10, but was really .057 per oz (ten times annual maximum). Throwing down too much fertilizer on my zoysia, etc. I also have rental house with St Augustine. Fired Trugreen; hope to save that yard- full of weeds.
    Thanks again for a great class on maintaining my yard.

    I normally power rake my lawn in March, or as soon as it looks like we won't get more freeze temps. But if I've already dropped pre-emergent,
    won't that break the chemical barrier? How about aerating? Seems like a catch-22.

    I monitor ground temperatures (backyard). 2015 ground temps did not warm until late March. On Feb 22, 2016 we consistantly hit 62 degrees; Feb 12 and 22 of 2017 we reached 60. Its been warming sooner. For 2018 I am thinking of being prepared to lay down the first app of 1/2 rate PE at end of January, the earliest I have ever done so. Will wait for the temps to tell me.

      Barry Camarillo, what do you use to measure soil temps? Do you stick a thermometer in your yard? I know sounds like such a dumb question. Thanks for the help!

    • @BarryVideo1
      @BarryVideo1 6 років тому

      Heather Sowell an in ground thermometer that has a 7" post driven into soil. Then use a cover (orange juice lid) help identify its location. Keep it simple so its easily duplicated.

      its a neonicotinoid so it has a bad rap with the bees. it worked well, but has been on the decline over the last few years due to resistance. i still use it from time to time with high success, but have had grub break through the last two years, but nothing of extreme detriment

    good timing for this. I'm in central texas and have a lawn care biz. Hoping to expand and do applications more this year for resi customers ( I have my app license). Can you do a video on your recommended equipment list for a guy just starting out on applications. Equipment focused for resi yards and small commercial properties. I already have backpacks and a cpl small tank sprayers. Where I'm lost is what to use for blanket apps on yards without spending a ton of money up front. small Skid tank, or...? Ive also looked at those sprayers that will mount inside of a fertilizer spreader and use a small boom set up. My concern with those is winddrift though. How do you deal with the wind? its seems like its always blowing here. I know we aren't supposed to apply when its over 10 mph....and that is a constant variable here in west texas.

    All the preemergents are great. Preemergent twice a year, but how do you preemergent twice a year if you want to overseed in the fall?

    • @TheGrassFactor
      @TheGrassFactor  6 років тому

      Fescue? You don't if you have to overseed or you use a seed safe pre like mesotrione

    Came over and watched this after watching your 10/28 livestream. I had a question right at the end of your livestream regarding what to do this time of year other than collecting samples in warm season turf, having just applied prodiamine in September. You mentioned in the live stream to think about what follow up preemergent I wanted to apply, I.E., atrazine or simazine in January. Given the low effective rates of atrazine and simazine as a preemergent, my plan was to apply a half rate of prodiamine in September and another half rate in January/February, followed by dithiopyr in April/May to hedge against late season crabgrass emergence. Should I add atrazine or simazine to that prodiamine application in January for its post emergent effects, or add an application of atrazine or simazine in the early Nov/Dec time frame (now) where you mention preemergent and then do my second prodiamine app in Jan/Feb?

    • @TheGrassFactor
      @TheGrassFactor  6 років тому

      So personally, i'm not a big fan of going prodiamine/dithiopyr. dithiopyr may have the same mode of action as prodiamine, but it does not extend the control of prodiamine. So I would run prodiamine in the following way:
      .75lbs AI in sept,
      .75 in Jan/feb, and
      .75 in Mar/April.
      Personally, I would add
      Simazine in November,
      atrazine in Jan,
      simazine+3 way in Feb/mar, assuming grass will not be greening up for another 30 days.
