- Between toy conventions, comic conventions, and card conventions, I have been going to "cons" for over 25 years. Over the years, I have learned a TON of tips and tricks. Do yourself a favor and take 13 minutes to watch this video before you go to another convention. You will thank me later!

If you plan on getting a Comic Book signed and want to slab it with CGC, ensure you get a CGC witness or just leave it with the CGC people.
Put on deodorant/hygiene. A lot of people are going to be somewhat close to you in the convention.
“Don’t be the person that smells” I wish people followed this
Lol
I had a friend that hardly showered,
They also had a warm outfit
THAT THEY INSISTED ON PUTTING ON BEFORE WE DROVE TO THE CON,
So I was stuck next to this smelly person that was sweating in their outfit
FOR NEARLY FIVE HOURS
Sadly it is those people who give us collectors and or fellow geeks a bad name when it comes to my hygiene I am a germaphobe lol and no I am not making fun of people who suffer from that I am actually really like that with my hygiene.
@@technounionrepresentative4274 LOL.. I could never stay friends with someone like that. Gotta have some standards in life and hygiene should definitely be one of them.
The only thing I like about hitting a CON is the ability to meet writers & artists and get a book signed. Sadly, it seems like comics are taking back seat to everything else at NYCC & SDCC.
Truly is another great reason to visit cons. The artists are very talented and exactly right-get something autographed by the writer or illustrator. I'm sure they won't take a back seat for long. Many of the lines and loves of action figures come from comics-I don't see them dying.
@@Nerdzoic It seems like it more now. Everything is getting more anime focused. Anime has taken over the nerd community.
I met Roddy Piper for free at a convention a few months before he passed away. I barely had money at the time and asked for permission from his manager/aide just to say hello. They said no at first but Roddy turned and told it was ok. My big regret is not having saved enough and going into a con broke. You never know when or if you’ll have that opportunity again. The Carrie Fisher story reminded me of this.
Seems like Roddy was definitely a nice guy and didn't let the fame make him too good to meet a fan. It can certainly be a struggle to have enough saved and ready for a con. Thank you for watching the video and sharing your story.
REALLY important point - this is all very detailed an excellent info regarding getting stuff signed, & you've mentioned a ton of hacks to avoid disaster. BUT, if you're gonna recommend PAINT PENS, MAKE SURE you tell people to let that shit DRY before you try to slide it into a sleeve, a case, or tuck it in their bag. Wave it around for 20 seconds, blow on it, whatever. You will DESTROY your signature if you try to put it in a sleeve too fast.
Good tip RD
I took my 2 year old to his first con yesterday he lost his mind he was so excited and that makes it even of an experience. Yeah going and finding stuff you like to collect is cool but seeing your kids be so happy and excited about everything is even better.
Have a question ready when you’re getting an autograph. Might get a personal interaction along with your autograph.
Great tip!
It works. Dont be the stupid person who uses signs and gestures to communicate.
I was fortunate enough to get Stan Lee's autograph, but didn't splurge for the photo. I wanted to bribe ($25 lol) the Con photographer to get photos of me and Stan when he was signing my comic, but he had already moved on before I got close enough. Great tips, man!
Haha smooth idea. That's cool you got an autograph with Stan. :) Thanks for watching.
Bringing drinks and snacks really does help. When I used to go to Disney me and my family always brought drinks, snacks and sometimes lunch. It really saves because food is expensive there.
Exactly. I swear it's the most expensive thing all day---just the drinks and food. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@Nerdzoic It's crazy how much they charge for food and drinks at those places.
At least with Disney World, the food is often delicious and part of the whole experience. Some of my best memories at Disney World are eating a Dole Whip and having tacos outside of Pirates of the Caribbean. I can't say the same for convention food... definitely eat outside of the convention hall when hunger strikes.
@@dogmd7 The soup in the bread bowl is yummy too.
All amazing tips. My personal addition would be to bring a portable stool for sitting when no other seating is available. It doesn't need to be a full chair, just something compact enough to fit in your backpack. These are particularly great when in lineups.
I got one at the Dollar Store and it has come with me around the world.
When I go to cons(sci-fi, comic, anime, etc), I bring my own food and water. Some cons won't allow outside food pending on which con you go. Check their website in advance before you go. I only go to toy, comic and sci-fi for one day only, unless if there's going to be a special actor/actress then book my hotel(I only book one for anime because it's held but once a year). I also bring some extra figures to get some autographed, but I check online first to see how much it costs to autograph and/or if he/she is going to attend. Sometimes they could cancel at the last minute. Also, be aware when you see booth dealers try to sell an autographed item, they just want your money. When trading figures, ask first before you do. Some won't take any because they also have them and theirs trying to sell, or not interested. And, yes shop around, compare prices, negotiate, and try asking if you can bundle some figures for one price. Also, if you can't get it, don't worry, there will be other conventions in the future.
Awesome you showed us your family man. Looks like you have a wonderful/happy family
Thank you Dustin-you're so kind. They are amazing and I couldn't have started the channel or website without them. I appreciate the comment.
That "Look Low" tip is HUGE. The "floor boxes when you are Looking for figure accessories or "junkers" for repairs is super key. Case in point, found ALL missles for one of my GI Joe vehicles at the last con I went to. Also found a sweet Ric Flair figure for my desk decor at work too. WOOOOO!
Make sure the autograph is dry before putting it in the protector. Many of the stars have told this to me when they signed the item for me. They are smart.
Being a kid collector and going to conventions, I got some pretty insane deals because I think people were just impressed I knew about these figures
That's awesome Quinn Moooka. Congrats!
@@KunaiLeech yep I’m the same age as you
I’m a bit younger but this hobby has me hooked. I’ve been to about, two conventions?
@@something_els3 being a bit younger is even better, when I was 10-11 deals at conventions were stupid easy
@@quinnmoooka9403 Ah great, I’m that age.
Great tips. I love that camera around the neck idea. I've missed so many spontaneous shots at cons because my camera was still stowed away in the backpack.
Maybe an excuse to upgrade my Camera as well.
And yeah I have a lot of guest photo and autographs I missed out on because I was either too nervous. Or Cheap with that maybe later attitude.
Boy that is a regret. Sill kicking myself two years later.
You aren't alone just like the video I put together. Missed so much by not being prepared. Thanks for watching the video.
You know what sucks? Is when your 44 , a huge modern 3.75 Star Wars collector! But I have absolutely nobody at all to even show my collection to! My friends are either dead (opioids) married and don’t talk to anyone anymore! So I have no friends into this stuff so I don’t hear about cons! I will hear about it after! And hay I just watched an etiquette at cons video and one of the pet peeves is back packs! They knock over a ton of stuff and they say that when you come in a booth you should where it on the front
Went to my first con a few days ago and followed most of these. Didn't expect those high prices, and to be honest I didn't really want to pay those prices.
Congrats on your first con. Pretty much always expect the high mark up, but remember if you know what it's going for retail and the knowledge/bargaining they almost always are willing to work with you.
I'm going to my first con next week
HAHAHA!!!! 10:41 I was going to say this, but you did!! One of the only things i HATE about cons are peoples lack of personal hygiene/lack of deodorant!
I love the video layout of how you told us a story with the tips and kind of got to learn more about you personally two thumbs up!
Thank you so much Brandon. I love story telling and this passion we all share definitely has stories that come along with collecting. I'm an open book so ask anything anytime. The lives are a great time to just hang out and chat back and forth. Thank you for watching.
You should do a collection room tour, great vid as always 👌
A lot of these sellers are dirty grifters who think they have the most valuable items ever. Find the guys that are willing to make deals. If these con men wont budge on a price forget about the item and hold your ground. These dirty sellers should be arrested.
Wish I had known these tips before, great video! Any tips for meeting the celebrities? I always get starstruck.
Thanks for watching Keaton. Be polite, give personal space, remember they're just people too, but their profession is more public. Have a question ready in hand so you aren't trying to think of one on the spot. Also, maybe thank them for the character they played as it shaped part of your love of--whatever it was etc. Hope this helps.
Lol. I go in with a plan, but come out off plan. 😂
Haha, we've all been there....
Love your tips man can’t wait for my first comic con next week after watching this!
Cant wait for NYCC this fall. Nyc has been depressing the last year and a half and this will be a bright spot. Always comes down to cash, its king at these things. I usually double whatever budget I had in mind and estimated. Right on the money with not going into work come that Monday. Rest and check your stuff out lol. Sweet video
I love the feeling of nerd unity at conventions
NWO for life there. :)
@@Nerdzoic N.W.O 4 LIFE
N.W.O fo fo for life
It’s true! I just got warlock wave colossus boxed with baf for 22$ at a local convention
WOW that's awesome.
Fun video! I was at Zolocon yesterday so definitely hit close to home haha. Fellow PA collector and diggin the channel!
Thanks for watching DAF. Hope Zolocon was awesome. :) Maybe someday we'll meet up.
Great video that gets straight to the point with helpful tips! Cant complain 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks man.
You're welcome Nathan. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Always ‘be polite’ using please and thank you goes a long way, just because you’re paying a guest for their autograph doesn’t mean you demand they have to sign it and if your lucky you may get a photo as well.
Sound advice.
Thanks for this info I’m a big marvel collector and I’m going to New York comic con my first convention and this was super helpful
That is awesome! I haven't been to the NY cons yet, but hoping to in the near future. I'm glad the video was helpful and you enjoyed it.
We went to a Con in a big city mall 1 hour away. Got some D&D items (dice tower made by Ren Faire vendor pal) and a few items we never had. Brought book and pen for autograph possibilities. Sorry to hear about your lost autograph chances with Stan and Carrie.
Thanks for watching my video Karen and commenting.
Waiting for Zolocon and decided to watch this great video again since it seems like it was so long since RetroCon. Thank you for the reminders.
Going to Dublin comic con in August. Super excided to go!! This video was really helpful. I'm taking a bus up and down the same day so i will certainly be tetrising everything on my lap for 4 hours.
A couple of my tips
pack a hand towel and a wet wash cloth in a ziplock bag it is so refreshing to wipe you face off and towel off!
pack bags the largest bags you can f bags you can find this way you don't have a dozen small bags at the end of the con
plus you don't have to buy a convention specific bag lets face you're not going to bring last years San Diego con bag if you can even find it.
Last tip drink a half gallon of orange juice at the end of the day just sip it till it's gone it really makes me feel better quickly...
Great video!!! I’ve been going to conventions for over 20 years and it’s great to hear that I’ve been doing it right. Lol 😂 Thanks for the refresher course. 😎
Thank you Dale. I'm sure there are other tips, but felt these were the big ones.
Good stuff - can relate to the re-discovery of collecting and how much I missed all of it.
I'm glad you rediscovered collecting too!
Ah man you schooling us inexperienced collectors. Needed this. Great vid.
Thanks for watching. If I can help even one person avoid some of my mistakes then my job is done. Cons are so fun, why let our unpreparedness make it mediocre or miserable.
Big Nerdy at the con: "Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back!"
Going to my first ever con in 2 weeks. This video was so helpful 💚
Awesome video. I can relate so much to this.
Here's my con checklist:
5 hour energy
Snacks
Energy bars
Water
Hand sanitizer
Baby wipes
Cell phone charger
Camera
Poster tube
Pen and sharpie
Advil
Pepto
Gum
Nice. Love the poster tube suggestion.
@@Nerdzoic they come in different sizes and some even have a strap so you can throw it on your back with your backpack.
Helpful and informative.. Your videos are the best Bro!
Thank you so much
I'm going to my first convention next week and I'm so excited
if you go to a smaller convention a dealer may be willing to hold on to the item for you after you purchase it if you are already full of purchases and need to run to the car / hotel room. dealer did this for me at retrocon
Great timing w conventions around the corner!
Thank you Nolan for watching. I am SO ready for another con.
Thank you for the paint pen tip… You are the man!!
Thanks for the tips. There's a few closer cheaper toy shows I'm planning to going to this year. I've already been writing up a toy hunt wish list, so that's just about ready.
I just started to collect this year, so I've never been to a Con. I'd love to go to a Con, but the money situation and I don't do large crowds, just too much to handle. Lol. 😞
Definitely something you have to budget for throughout the year or as soon as you know a date for a con. Now that things are opening back up it will give you at least many opportunities to attend one if you change your mind. I am not a huge fan of large crowds either, however, I absolutely love conventions.
@@Nerdzoic yeah I bet the figures would outweigh the anxiety. I'll definitely have to try one somewhere, but I am no where near the expert on anything. I'm a total newb. Lol
If you dont Like people or crowds you better stay away from cons. People may be a hassle
The best priced Action Figure convention is ToyLanta held in Atlanta every March.
I have seen people at Cons carrying big product why they walk around and like you said it is hard to go shopping when you have this big bulky item you have to carry around by hand
Yes, my back hurts just watching them carry it.
Thank you for this video, great tips!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching it.
New nerdzoic shout/logo sounds more like it used to, actually prefer that so it’s great 👍
Speaking of autographs and cash - didn't have cash last year's NYCC and stumbled on Ally Wong's booth (author of SW Doctor Aphra) in my custom SW outfit with saber and all. She took paypal, but both of our phones had about half a bar of reception, so while phones were sweating to load paypal - made for nice conversation time and geeking over lightsabers and some pics.
Another topic but:
Do you think the filoni Black series exclusive figure will come later as a standard release?
Like Bane or the Armorer
So I’m not the only one who like the smell of new toys lol
Not alone at all
Can the next video you do be on how we can find our own Annas? 😉 Great video and advice Big Nerdy!
I went to my first convention this year (Indiana Comic Con) and i've heard a lot of people talk about people smelling bad. Maybe I got lucky but I tell you not once did I walk by anyone that smelled remotely bad.
Great list for anyone new to the con world!
Thank you!
As a seller, my advice is never try to haggle by asking "how low are you willing to go?" or "what's your best price on this?" That tells me you aren't serious. I'll point at the sticker or cover price every time. Why on earth would I just tell you that? It's your job to FIND OUT how low I'm willing to go by making an offer. Haggle by offering an actual amount and be ready to counter.
Great video , I have a question totally unrelated to this video but I figured to ask anyway , what's your take on the new Haslab Galactus figure ,I put in an order for one, assuming they get their orders of 14000 to reach their goal .
Love it. Not sure if I'm going to get it yet.
Awesome advice! Thanks for sharing!👍😁
Thank you Bill!
@@Nerdzoic Yes sir!👍
Ima definitely use this for sdcc next year
Awesome. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Love this vid bro 😎😎
Thanks Bob
Great advice for the autograph. Me and my wife went back in 16 in Detroit. Stephen Amell was using a silver sharpie ( very good). Val kilmer was a black sharpie and it has faded. Still Awesome, but faded👍
Great comment Ron and awesome that you and the wife have two autographs. :) It seems like a black Sharpie would make perfect sense to all of us, so wanted to make sure that tip was in the video.
Good stuff…. Thank you.. I’m 55 and made some of the same mistakes but I do like the Paint pen idea pretty cool
You're welcome Phil. Yes, who would have thought... Most instinct says grab a black Sharpie. Thank you for watching.
So true. Great advice.
Thank you
Going to San Diego comic con in a couple weeks!!
Now I want to go to a con
🙌🏼
Thanks I plan to save this video for later
The first time I met Stan lee, they wouldn't allow paint markers not sure why but they were strict on it. Stan ended up signing my ML Spiderman figure with a black sharpie, I was bummed at the time because I wanted it in red paint marker but I guess I'm fortunate to at least get his autograph. The 2nd time I met him was a lot better though
Thanks for sharing Neo Arcada. That is odd they restricted paint markers for the first autograph. I can't think of reason why that would be a thing especially when you're still paying for the signature.
@@Nerdzoic My guess is that they were in a rush to hurry. He wasn't able to really see either, he'd have help from his assistants and they'd point for him to sign. I went to his autograph session at 9am and got my autograph at 5pm. His lines were always huge.
Matt, do you know any good toy cons in California? I know all the comic cons. But no toy specific cons. If you know any info please let me know. Please and thank you.
Only ones I know are SDCC and Anaheim Con-I think called Wonder Con. I am unsure of any smaller scale cons.
I too miss going to con in Toronto I can't now because of my disability and get too tired to walk around for a long time Matt but I wanted to mention also Sir that you are so lucky you have a beautiful wife, mine unfortunately left after the stroke and cardiac arrest but anyways it happens I guess. Be safe
Hey Peter-I'm sorry you're dealing with health issues and that it keeps you from attending cons. I wonder if a motorized wheelchair would solve that issue? Maybe go with another friend.... Idk just throwing it out there. I hate the idea of you missing out on something you love. I'm so sorry to read that your wife had left. I can't even imagine. I do feel very blessed to have Anna. She is supportive and encourages me everyday. Thank you for watching my channel.
@@Nerdzoic thanks from the other side Matt LoL I'm supposed to be dead honestly. Sorry don't mean to mention it on your channel, to explain I was what they call a blue baby was born with a whole in my heart and had open heart surgery when I was 4 years old at sick kids hospital in Toronto, and was spoiled as a kid with toys even after my baby brother Chris was born 2 and a half years later. One great time I had with my mom and my brother Chris was Christmas time of '85 and we were at the Eaton's store downtown Toronto and the top floor was all Toys and we were allowed to spend $100 each on what ever we wanted I picked up g1 transformers Megatron toy but she said no guns so I think that I picked up octimus prime. In April of '06 I got a blood clot which caused a stroke on my left side went through 3 months of rehab to learn to walk talk and take care of myself and then on September first of '08 I didn't wake up that morning had a cardiac arrest which both my cat Nemo and my then wife Angy saved my life, which is another story for another time. I'm very happy to be alive and still use a cane for balance when I'm outside walking around and live off a Disability check from the government here. Can't afford an wheelchair like that. But hey I'm on the right side of the grass lol. Thanks for the support. Thanks very much I appreciate your response. You have a kind heart big guy.
Awe. -You’ll find someone who except you with your condition Period if you put effort it would be shortly soon.
The look low helped me out. Found a marvel select Anti Venom
I'm new to this collecting world. How can I keep up with conventions?
There isn't a one stop shop list of cons that I know of. I would just recommend Googling and networking in forums or groups to find out of local and bigger cons. Sorry I don't have a better answer at the moment.
I recently started getting back into collecting and have been hitting up Frank’s and Son Collectible Show in southern Cali. Really helpful video Nerdy!!!
I'm glad the video was helpful and thank you for watching it. That's on my list to visit someday. :)
Luckily I follow all the rules you told us about and luckily I live near by the convention centre so Hotels are not an issue and I got Christopher Lambert's aka Connor Mac Leod autograph sadly he does not like taking photos which is his own right but I have that autograph and I am proud of it even if it is not valuable only 15 to 30 dollars it is valuable to me and it is in a dark room so the autograph won't fade seriously my room is like a haven for geeks and collectors.
That's so awesome you live near the center and can avoid paying for hotels. I bet your room is amazing and great idea to take care of your autograph.
@@Nerdzoic Thanks honestly I did not know my room is that perfect looked up autograph preservation and they basically described the conditions in my room lol being lucky.
Ik this is an old video but you and your wife look great together 👏 appreciate the guidance as well
Unfortunately being disabled in a electrical wheelchair I can't do conventions anymore :-(
I was gonna go and get Jason David Franks signature but Covid happened and they had to cancel it and now I can’t get it
Wow that sounds exactly like my story
Well the part about taking a break and one con reignited my nerd addiction all over again lol
I was able to meet Carrie Fisher one month before she passed. It is a memory that me and my kids have held onto ever since. I also do serious Cosplay so I also plan storage for any convention I go to.
So cool and what a great tip for cosplayers.
thanks for the tips. i found a marvel select thing figure for $10 at a convention
3:13...lol!
Great video
Great video but I’m so depressed the next con where I live is in a while cause of that sob COVID
Oh man that sucks. I feel very fortunate to live close to all the major cities in the East Coast, as I'm sure things further west are slow to open... Thinking of you man.
@@Nerdzoic I don’t live in America I’m Indian
Only con I made it to was Gamesday by Games Workshop, back when they used to hold it near Chicago.
Doing a toy con would be fun. Can definitely see the need to do a budget thing. I also have GenCon on my bucket list as well….
Sage advice, Matt!
Thanks man
Is the negotiating rule for la comic con too??
Mine was Jason David Frink. Saw him at Power Rangers Con but didn't get his autograph, and he passed 2 months after
All true!
Big Nerdy sounds excitedfor the new Con
Hamm Bone-you're putting that mildly. Haha.
it took me a while to realize that i hate everything about conventions, celebrity worship, human interaction, overpriced stuff, exclusives, it's hot, it smells, it is cramped
sidenote: lol about budget, i'd have to save up for 2 years to even go to a bigger convention let alone hotels and buying stuff and food
That was thorough. Can't wait to see another Nerdy at a convention vid. NWO fur das leben!
Thank you Andrew! I can't wait to go and make another.
I went to zolocon on Saturday, I didn’t have a budget cus I wanted to buy a lot of different shit… one big gripe I had, nobody had any gundams, I have a huge collection of gundams and want more, but nobody has them
Buy on line.
@@sithlord519 gee thanks, never thought about that… idiot
Is it legal for Big Nerdy to spend any of the American Families Plan money on collecting? ;) (To be sold for a profit when the kids are off to college)

Glad you liked them!
I liked the way you said A T A T instead of At At 😅
I miss conventions. Going back in the fall. I am on the other side of the table now, but it's just great to be back. If you're ever at a convention and you see a Guerrilla Publishing booth, stop by and say what up.
I will definitely stop by Ben. I am glad they're back in action too. I have greatly missed conventions. Thanks for watching.
