Oh god, they are extremely unsettling, like someone clicking their tongue next to you, similar to how parents might show how a small child has done something wrong.

this movie left me with this gross, uneasy feeling in my stomach for hours after i saw it. its just wrong on so many levels, it really gets in deep under your skin and just sits. these are all compliments to the movie, btw, it being a horror movie and all. not many movies have ever left me feeling that way before.
Thats right, psychological horror gets under your skin and stays with you for days and even weeks ... in contrast cheap horror movies scare you for that moment only and you forget about it shortly after watching ...
I was done with the horror genre because I was tired of it. Nothing but jump scares. But someone told me about this and I can truly say this was a disturbing film. Can't unsee certain things. Can't unhear that sound.
I love theses types of movies. They aren’t necessarily “scary” but they fill you with dread and anxiety. It’s not always easy to get that effect but they did an amazing job
This movie is absolutely horrifying and off the charts scary. Not sure what scares you but Hereditary is probably in the top 5 scariest productions to ever be produced.
This truly is one of the most original movies I've ever watched. And for anyone wondering, this is MUCH more than just your typical horror movie. While in a way it definitely is a horror, it's so much more, as even Toni said in Now This News interview. Also, her performance in this was just amazing, it was pure art. Raw emotion in every single scene she's in. This movie has so many great scenes in it, overall. Definitely worth a watch.
Great comment. Informative and insightful. I also, particularly liked how you included the analysis made by the actress on the film by referencing the source of that particular interview.. When I take in consideration of the above, I am even more amazed of your comment. So awesome dude!! You 🤟
I feel like those people who don't get why this movie is one of the scariest and best horror movies of modern cinema aren't at the same level of wavelength as those who get it. The eerie, dreadful, uneasiness, and depressing depictions throughout the whole movie was something I havent seen in a LONG time. Not one point of the movie was there any sense of happiness. Nothing but guilt. Scenes were disturbing: from the sounds in the backround to the strange movements of the characters. Not only that, the reactions of each character to their inexplicable and terrifying environment was so realistic. For example, the still shot of Peter sitting in his car after the accident, too tramautized to move, was incredible. The slow pans, the still and silent shots, the amazing cinematography of this film was perfect and captured the moments in the best way. 10/10.
Could not agree more, the audio and visuals, through the brilliant cinematography, all blend to keep you uneasy and feeling almost sick, which is something we don't see much of anymore.
The sad truth is a majority of movie goers watch horror films for the sake of feeling sensations in their body through jumpscares. It's a shame. I think hereditary is one of the most unsettling Hollywood horror films I have ever seen. People are like, “It was slow, it bored me.” Well, I wasn't bored for a single second of this movie. It was over filled with interesting elements. Films like the babadook and the witch are also looked down upon because it “bored” people. Well, if all you want is cheap jumpscares and blood, it's gonna get you bored. By the end of the movie, it got so intense I wanted to do something, like I felt like I had to do something, I felt disturbed.
Tori should have received an Oscar for the absolutely remarkable performance she gave us the films a jaw dropper! This was some of the finest art work I’ve ever seen in acting. My mom was crazy growing up as a child the similarities between them was actually quite terrifying . It’s a shame Oscar’s are only given to biopics & films of war . Acting is acting shouldn’t matter what role you’re playing. Hollywood needs an enema. To over look such a brilliant performance & amazingly well done film simply because it falls under the horror category is just ludicrous imo.
reminds me of my Mom too, and things got really bad right before she passed away and afterwards and still I have been haunted by her - in good ways and bad. I'm still trying my hardest to piece my life back together.
okay and now I'm freaked out even more bc I forgot this is my son's youtube account and he had to not only deal with MY Mom, but ME as well, as I also am crazy now and I fully admit it. It's just so weird how I read this from my son's perspective (imagining I passed away and this is him saying this) and it fits way too much. If I could take away my loved ones' experience of my own crazy, I would in a heartbeat and I tear myself up about it almost everyday.
@@hustleno-filta5373 I had a nightmare a few nights ago about getting groceries. If we have nightmares about specific things it often means that we spent a lot of time thinking about those things. Yes! Have been following the trajectories of A24 and Blumhouse... picking smart projects, using the right distribution channels, winning awards, creating buzz. I started to take notice of Blumhouse seriously then they produced Whiplash (not horror I know, but it almost landed them La La Land too) and The Gift.
Yea. A24 is based in NYC. In addition to launching past Oscar winners Ex Machina, Moolight and Room, 2017 is the year they killed it: from the well known (Disaster Artist and Lady Bird) to even better (imho) films such as Good Time, Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Florida Project. So many other awesome nuggets too - like Villenueve’s Enemy.
A perfect example of 'you don't need spooky noises and that *DUN* sound to scare people' this movie is probably the best horror movie of all time . it's just underrated
@@BiblicalllyAccurateAngel it was underrated within my group of people. a lot of my friends don't watch horror movies as much as i do, and when they do it's not the good ones. a lot of people criticized this movie for not being scary enough, being too weird, or just plain funny. missed the point completely

This is how you do a movie trailer! Just give tiny bits and pieces, show NOTHING important to the main plot and leave us wanting more. They should study this in film school, seriously! These days 98% of movie trailers give away the entire plot in two minutes effectively ruining any form of suspense or reason to see it. This is one of the best horror movies movies I've ever seen. It's gory and scary, but it's also *extremely* smart, twisty, and brilliantly acted. I wish it would get the attention it deserves.
Derek Escalante I honestly don’t think it is. This movie is insanely horrifying-the concept of it, the gore, how smart it is, and the acting is incredible too. It’s gripping and soul chilling
I was watching this with my friends. There was this moment when the son is waking up and just sits in bed. And then suddenly my friend screamed "SHIT!!! SHE'S ON THE ROOF". And then, realizing that there was someone hanging in the roof all along just electrified my whole body. This is what true horror feels like, things that are hidden at plain sight
Sridevi Sudhahar It 100% could happen in real life. Look at like this there was no dead deer in the road, there were no ghosts or a cult. This movie was the individuals perspective of having schizophrenia and a psychotic break from reality
Alex Wolfe was amazing too. To go from the regular teen, to completely horrified and broken after the “accident”, to completely terrified and crying, to being completely calm and serene in the final scene. Toni Collette though was still the better performance just by a hair.
Eddie Cardwell agreed. They both need awards for the scenes when they were crying. That raw, disgusting sound of fear, pain and pure heartache...ughhh makes me cringe
i have to applaud them for not putting the jaw dropping scene (everyone knows what i mean) into the trailer, it completely shocked the audience when it happened, this movie is a masterpiece.
It's a lot different seeing blocking, Lighting each set up, shooting multiple takes, then relighting for another camera position. Having talent consistently deliver the scene, each take and keeping the "Creep" factor up. Nothing quite like it. Then the scene hits you, often out of context or disconnected. Makes you excited to watch the finished product. This one Made Sundance.
Do not fear the one that can kill the body but fear the oneThat can kill the body and Cast thy soul into hell. And god Did not give us a spirit of fear but of power love and a sound mind
There's one or two, and man they made me scream and actually jump out of my seat. No other "jumpscare" in any other horror movie has ever made me do that.
This trailer really had me thinking this movie was completely different to what we all actually saw. I like that. This is the first movie I saw in theatre to genuinely frighten me.
This looks legitimately terrifying. I wholeheartedly welcome original horror like this over the jump-scare ridden trash Hollywood typically delivers. A24 are doing us well.
But it really wasn’t' that scary, I just watched that alone in a dark room at night and obviously fully concentrated and still didn’t get scared. BTW I am a girl.
The scene where the mother is on the wall will forever stay with me. One of the most chilling scenes I've seen in a film. My 2nd fav A24 film behind only Ex Machina
So much this! I love how it's intentionally misleading story-wise but still giving you the look and feel of the movie! Now I wish all trailers did that.
Inconvenient Timing it makes it look like the mom is a psychotic killer who wants to kill her family with some evil involved. When it’s really about a giant cult and a demon who possesses each member of the family except the dad.

A masterpiece of modern horror imo. Reminded me of The Shining in terms of suspense shots, slow eerie pacing, and character drama/build. Slow in some areas but it doesn’t ruin it because of that
I like how the main role is speaking through the trailer in first person and all calm even at the climax of the video. The editing and execution of this is really good.
radolf p havent seen it yet but either the mother is the one that has the issues or the daughter is possessed 🤷🏻♀️ but it seems to be a very interesting movie. 👏🏻
@@notsoepicgamer5420 I’ve yet to see the witch but I’ve heard comparisons and if you liked it you should check this out. Hereditary is my favorite movie of all time and every now and then I rewatch the trailer just to remember the experience.
See The Witch, if you haven't. It's another of these slow horror films. But whereas Hereditary is good, The Witch is a masterpiece. And there's not a jump scare in sight.
What makes this movie so unnerving is the fact that it's not really about the literal horror you're seeing, there's an underlying metaphor for how your family effects your life, only it's portrayed like pure terror; which is exactly what a lot of people feel when it comes to their family
To me, the horror is also from Peter's perspective. Even if we ignore the fact that a demon wants to steal his body. The situation he is in is horrifying. I was always scared for him any time he had to face his mother.
This movie still haunts me and gives me goosebumps even when i think about it. I know that most of you disagree with me but imo Hereditary is the best horror movie ever.
Those with a higher mind agrees with you. I seen A LOT of horror movies in my lifetime and this is by far one of the best in 21st century. You have to be able to connect to really see the masterpiece that is in the energy and cinematograhpy. I've never felt this kind of unsettling feeling before that this movie gave....
Oh lord if you think this is the best horror movie I feel bad for you. This was literal shit that used shock value for its whole plot and made absolutely no sense

So Apperantely they played this trailer before a screening of Peter Rabbit in Austrailia. Needless to say kids were scared shitless. Parents were covering their kids eyes and ears, some took their kids out of the theater. The theater is probably gonna get sued. Wish I was there to experience the commotion
Jacob C. Mayer Austrailia kids probably get scared easily, IDK if they're gonna be tramautized. But maybe some of the parents might want some extra cash and sue the theater anyway. Good thing this didn't happen in America, people are such pussies here the theater would have to be shut down
Jacob C. Mayer the trailer might be tame for you, and people like us who watch horror films. But for a child this is really traumatizing. I remember being a small kid and being afraid of Jumanji! Lol Jumanji! Now I laugh about it but I was so little and didn't understand what was happening also sometimes I would be in the room and my dad stopped for a bit on the X-Files while zapping I would start screaming and crying. I was about 3 or 4 it's really normal.
prxnxv exactly that’s exactly what I said in my comment it just like the witch it got under my skin and made my skin crawl but I honestly think this one will be much much worse than THE WITCH. I just got out of the movie! It wasn’t really scary at all.. there was one scene that like had me shook for a couple minutes and the rest was mostly like a thriller making you think like “ahhh I’m scared about what’s going to jump out” but nothing ever really does. Although it wasn’t terrifying, it was quite hilarious at parts! Oh and the ending was kind of ehhh
Chloe Ledbetter no. the ending was iconic and comforting, i love the music that is played as he is finally accepted to his new path and the crown scene was top notch. it relieves the viewer of the uncertainty and suspense from the drama in the movie. you clearly weren’t taking the movie seriously.
Tom Ian Holland I completely agree with you, I was definitely immersed into the movie and not only did I love the amazingly done mood and environment, but also the stellar acting and originality. I'd give it an 8.5/10!
At this rate you don't even need to watch a trailer for an A24 movie. You automatically know it's going to be unique, award-winning and straight-up awesome. They have to be the most consistently-amazing studio in film history.
4of92000 Ah that's true I forgot about Pixar. I'm sure A24 will have their 'Cars' eventually. EDIT: Pixar pre-2011 would be more accurate as the James swarens pointed out
I haven't seen it but from some scenes, the impression I get is that this movie shows exactly what this terror would be like in real life. The grief and imagery is unsetting as HELL. @@visualsforyou7120 if you haven’t watched it by now you absolutely have to. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen regardless of genre. Absolutely chilling but not in the way most horror movies are. If I saw old naked people in my attic I would of jumped off too tbh
And the fact the house is in the middle of nowhere at night while a demon is trying to possess you makes it more unsettling

@@wolfrising Nope, I just like movies haha
Sam Chiang I agree!! 11/10 lol
Akshat Vats couldn't have said it better!

This is how you do a movie trailer! Just give tiny bits and pieces, show NOTHING important to the main plot and leave us wanting more. They should study this in film school, seriously!

The Witch is other classic horror where some people don't understand.
True
@@JESSEXTO no, dude how did you even watch the movie 3 times lmao
@@JESSEXTO yes, there’s lots of details in the background that you miss when you only watch it once. Like the funeral scene, where all the guests were part of the cult. Or the naked old people that sometimes appear in the background of their house. It’s one of those things where the longer you watch it the creepier it gets.
I watched it once and couldn’t sleep for days. I haven’t watched it since. Absolute masterpiece
"The movie audiences are loosing their heads over"
hehehe
LMAOOOOOOOOO

She never responded. RIP Heather.

After watching this movie, i never slept in a normal position for three days. I was afraid to look at the ceiling.
I didn't know about this movie until much later after its release but I'm glad I ended up watching it. One of the greatest horror movies that I've seen in a long time.
Watching Annie banging her head on the attic door almost gave me a heart attack lol
Omg i know right! I had to put my phone aside to process what was happening 💀
for some reason i laughed 💀
@@Amira-hc4cm you laughed--- hold up 😭💀
@@Amira-hc4cm haha me too! I thought she got possessed by the pigeon
@@creepellavoncracklefur4735 That was the scariest part of the movie for me, but the “pigeon” thing you said made me laugh real hard. WAHAHAHAHA
Just watched this movie... If you're expecting scary jump-scare clichés and recycled stories, this isn't for you. However, it is also not for the faint of heart. This movie is somewhat slow at times but towards the end it becomes extremely disturbing and gut wrenching (I'm used to horror and even I had to look away at one point). The acting is superb and the cinematography as well! A24 has done it again.
yea i agree and the ending is perfect, i think its the best movie so far of 2018
I just got out of the movie!
Chloe Ledbetter no. the ending was iconic and comforting, i love the music that is played as he is finally accepted to his new path and the crown scene was top notch. it relieves the viewer of the uncertainty and suspense from the drama in the movie. you clearly weren’t taking the movie seriously.
first half good, second half sucked. oh and the story line all the way through sucked.
still better than most horror movies these days though.
Tom Ian Holland I completely agree with you, I was definitely immersed into the movie and not only did I love the amazingly done mood and environment, but also the stellar acting and originality. I'd give it an 8.5/10!
It truly was a horror masterpiece
Ben macoun What are we talking about here?
I still think the 2nd half of, The Audition, was scarier, but this was good.
*Terror
I Still come back to this trailer, I get goosepumps every damn time. Truly a masterpiece of horror
At this rate you don't even need to watch a trailer for an A24 movie. You automatically know it's going to be unique, award-winning and straight-up awesome.
They have to be the most consistently-amazing studio in film history.
Well said!
Also Pixar pre-2008.
But yeah, A24 is pretty good.
4of92000 Ah that's true I forgot about Pixar. I'm sure A24 will have their 'Cars' eventually.
EDIT: Pixar pre-2011 would be more accurate as the James swarens pointed out
Pre-2008? I think you mean pre-2011. Up and Toy Story came out in 09' and 10' and they're among some of their best work.
Mmm except for maybe It Comes At Night.....that movie sucked pretty bad.
This is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, my skin was literally crawling throughout the whole thing. UGH.
I haven't seen it but from some scenes, the impression I get is that this movie shows exactly what this terror would be like in real life. The grief and imagery is unsetting as HELL. This is not a movie you can go watch with your girlfriend for a fun night. Watching this with her means you don't want to date anymore.
Visuals For You you have to watch it bro, best horror movie i’ve watched ever. Wayyyyy better than all those cheesy horror films
same
@@visualsforyou7120 if you haven’t watched it by now you absolutely have to. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen regardless of genre.
Absolutely chilling but not in the way most horror movies are. It’s so unique in the way it gets at your emotions through the developing plot.
It’s more unsettling than frightening, but in the best way, if that makes sense.
Watch the Witch.
DO NOT watch this movie home alone in the middle of the night. It will leave you scarred for life, learn from my mistakes.
Too late. Im fucked up rn. 2:30 in the morning just finished watching it.
That must have made the movie so much better lol !
Well, I watched this movie on my bed, with my computer with 5.1 sound(adds to the intense music)... AT 3 AM. alone... All night I was afraid i'll see someone standing in the corner of my room lol
I watched this just now in the dark in my room and it's 3:45am, I couldn't stop laughing at how weak this movie was, you're a bunch of girls
Watched it 12 AM ALONE and were not scared for shit mate. To be honest this movie was not scary but just weird and sad. Funny how these fucktard cult members cannot save themselves from death. May them all rot in hell where they belong.
People with empathy will feel absolute dread during this movie and the human tragedy hits hard. This intensifies the nightmarish feel during the expertly made horror scenes. The horror gives you that rising feeling and the sense of being helpless. I remember that when I was young and had really bad nightmares, I always got a similar feeling. That ice cold shiver that rolls down your neck and the feeling that something is NOT RIGHT.
