    Just saw that drip edge at hd today when looking for flashing from wall sheathing to porch. Asked the worker if I could use it for this purpose, he didn't know. Nice to see you implementing a thought I had after I thought it. Makes me hope I'm on the right page. Trying to do things as right as I can. Edit: I will try to shingle house wrap onto the flashing or maybe tape if I need to.

    The building we live in was built over 20 years ago, 1995, I believe, and our deck looks like it's been around much longer. 1 yr later, and it looks like it is FINALLY going to be fully replaced. I hope and pray the builders take this much care with ours

    😆 I'm 30 seconds into your video and you just confirmed what the deal is with my deck. I was just under it today and they attached the ledger board over the siding. It explains many issues I've seen. I wish I was this aware when I bought it in 1998 with the deck they had just added to the house. Oh well. I will watch the rest now to see what to ask about when we have it replaced.

    This is the first pro video I've seen where the ledger is placed entirely underneath the Tyvek, rather than the usual method of applying waterproof tape under the ledger, possibly with shims over that to allow water a pathway to trickle down behind the ledger without getting trapped. I can see the appeal, although it means the joist hangers will produce hundreds of extra holes in the Tyvek, and the contact between the end of each joist will be tight against the Tyvek. Waterproof tape is gaining traction for use over the top of each joist and to help seal screw holes, and installed with a shingle pattern should be as good.

    Great video Jeff. I actually did this about a month ago and I did everything you just did plus I installed a water proof membrane called Grace between the ledger board and the house wrap. And also on top of the ledger board before nailing the Z flashing. It’s a second story deck so had to be careful.

    Definitely true.. just helped my brother replace a new sliding door on the back of his house. House sits on a slab with a small porch that was previously installed. Once we took the old slider off the ledger board was against the siding and water destroyed the framing of the slider and a couple feet of joists and floorboard inside.

    As far as I'm concerned, the concept of "going overboard" doesn't even exist when it comes to keeping your structure dry. If there's something you can do that's going to help, even if it isn't strictly necessary, why wouldn't you?

    • @tay13666
      @tay13666 4 роки тому +3

      Exactly. I doesn't hurt to over engineer a project.
      When my daughter was little, I built her a set of steps so she could use the bathroom sink to wash her hands.
      That was almost 30 years ago, and those steps are still in use.
      Build it right, build it strong, build it only once.

    My suggestion is to provide additional deck footings and columns along the building approx. 1 or 2 feet from the face of the house. This will provide a separate and independent structure for deck and house. There will be no ties to the house therefore no water getting into the house. It may cost a couple hundred bucks but a safer way.

    • @zachgoestoeuro

      DYI'er here. K H, I really like your suggestion! For my case, I'm building a deck with roof. I was going to attach a ledger for the roof and a ledger for the deck. I'd have to remove the stucco at both places to install barrier and weep screed. With an independent structure, I can bypass all of that. Now I'm trying to think of any downsides or concerns.

    • @khanarch1
      @khanarch1 2 роки тому +1

      @@josiahutah3712 I'm a licensed architect for 30 years. If you make the deck independent from the house, you don't have to worry about future problems which may occur in your house. But make sure to install braces between deck columns depending on height in order to prevent lateral movement.

    Brick is definitely NOT structural if it is just a veneer (single brick layer) outside the structure. Attaching a ledger using long bolts/lags through the brick and into the interior rim joist is typically not allowed. Simpson makes a specific type of wedge anchor to attach a ledger through brick veneer. I have even heard stories of some engineers refusing to sign off on those wedge anchors, even though Simpson designed them specifically for this purpose.

    • @vulemma
      @vulemma 4 роки тому

      @stealthballer this wasn't an inspector. This was an engineer in the design phase who was pushing back against the builder who wanted to use them. I got this story from the builder so i don't know more than that. They certainly weren't happy with the engineer arguing against clear specifications.

    I have a back deck that was attached to the house that caused the back door sill to rot so I had to replace the door. I also had deck rot near the house. I had about 3-4 ft of deck cut out with the joists cut off too. So now I have 3-4 ft of missing deck closest to house along the entire deck length. Do you have or know of any videos for this scenario where you are replacing a section like that? It may be a challenge to get it all level with the existing deck. I was told to not attach it to the house.

    How about NOT attaching your deck to the house? No structural leverage and no water damage worries. You are going to install footings for the rest of the deck anyway. Install a few more footings and sleep well knowing that if a tree falls on your deck, it won't take the house with it.

      That is what I did, 4 years in no movement since. House finish is unscale! Easier simpler safer.

      @@Biohazarus , I like your comment. I'm building a deck with roof (lean-to style). If it were to be freestanding, are there other builders that seal between the roof and the house to keep water off of the house (between roof of the deck and house)?

    Someone added a covered deck (much lower than the one in this video, it actually has garden landscape timber I'm pretty sure) to our early 80's model house that has wood siding. The roof part where they have corrugated plastic for a roof wasn't attached properly and allowed water to run down the siding and water damaged a window and it leaks as well. Would this be the same thing needed? Just cut into the T1 11 (guessing that's what it is), remove extra to add that plastic and reattach? Or do you have a video for this that I've missed?

    Hi Jeff,
    What work shoe(Steel/Alloy toe) would you recommend for a home builder/renovator?
    I am overwhelmed by so many recommendations on youtube. Would love to see whats your opinion on this.

    Soooo, my deck was attached on top of the siding decades ago and the siding is rotting. What do I do now???
    (thinking I'm going to have to detach the ledger one section at a time somehow, then tyvek and flash appropriately).

    From what I’ve read, you aren’t allowed per code to drill through and attach through brick, at least in the USA

    So, am I removing all the siding up the whole wall to install the ledger? We are transplanting a deck from one location to another that was intended to have a deck.
