- Trying the Kato Unitrack system. I am a big fan of temporary layouts and do not have a permanent layout, so I am trying to find track that suit my purpose. I bought some Kato track:
- V11 superelevated double track set (Kato 20-870-1)
- V2 sigle track viaduct set (Kato 20-861-1)
- 2x V4 switching siding set (Kato 20-863-1)
- Kato 20-221 R4 turnout
- Kato 20-210 double crossover
This is my own purchase and is not sponsored.
I am used to Märklin C-track and Märklin MFX and in this video I experiment with these Kato sets and see what I can learn. All in all I find the Kato unitrack nice and easy to use and it suits my purpose. Still have unanswered questions on how to DCC-enable turnouts and double cross over, so I will look into that in the future.

I have worked (played?) with N Scale model railroading for over 30 years. Always used the "conventional" means like flex track, atlas and Peco sectionals and turnouts, and handlaid roadbed, etc. I can't tell you how many ties (sleepers) I have destroyed using the tiny tacks to hold the tracks down. In spite of that, I have stuck with that method over all the years.
Recently I decided to do some experimenting and build a testing layout using Kato Unitrack to see if I like it and if it can meet my needs/wants. This is my first experience with Kato track....and I LOVE it! Mind you, I only have a few basic parts at this time, but am going on Amazon/Ebay later to look for more parts.
I am actually tempted to go in and completely redo my Hammer Valley Model Railroad with Kato Unitrack now. I have a few videos showing how I built it and even a little operation video here and there. I wonder if I could get actually away with Kato tracks on that tiny (2X3 Foot) layout.
Anyways, this has turned into a long comment, but I want to say that I really liked this video. Yes I did watch all the way through. I found it to be quite inspirational regarding what I might want to do with my Kato test layout. I can see where a guy can spend a small (or maybe not-so-small) fortune in Kato tracks and equipment, but the quality can not be denied. It is good stuff. Thanks for the in-depth video.

I have been using Kato unitrack for my N scale railroading. I have found it very easy to work with so far but I have only been running DC and no electric turnouts. I do have two turnouts on a small switching layout but I operate them manually. I am, hopefully this year, going to put together a small layout with a loop plus some switching areas and I think i'll be using Unitrack for that as well. Although Atlas and Bachmann track look more realistic. The downside is they are more difficult to work with than Unitrack. I really liked the layout that you ended up with combining all of the sets. I know there are ways to make those turnouts move electrically with DCC although I have not researched it as my N stuff is DC. My HO track is DCC but has no switches, yet. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I really like the Kato unitrack as it make temporary layouts. For a permanent layout I agree it is worth considering more realistic tracks - however, if you dont want to fiddle with the tracks and just get going on a first layout the Unitrack are great. The cool thing about the Kato turnouts are that they have a built-in turnout mechanism, so it is really just a question of powering it. The sets actually also have DC switches for switching the turnouts - however, I do not have an apropiate powersupply for this. Will look into DCC turnouts in a future video, but I am trying to find a Märklin solution to be able to re-use what I have. Enjoy ;-)

Hi Davie, N scale is very tempting as you can have a lot more in less space. From what I have seen modern N scale is very detailed can do almost the same as H0 scale (I have not seem factory mounted steam yet). I have only looked at European train manufactors. However, remember everything is equally small when you need to maintain or modify it. I am still using H0 as I have a large collection, but my N scale collection is growing. Enjoy ;-) Bo
I got to be honest. Kato makes some of the best newbie friendly model train track packs in N and HO scale. Unlike Farish and Bachmann.

Wonderful video. You did a great job explaining everything. I also have a Kato starter set. Mine is the Amtrak P42 Superliner set. Kato unitrack is by far the most reliable track system especially for those modelers like you and I who like to change the track layout once in a while. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you like the videos. I will be looking more into the Kato tracks with Märklin. To me the next step is to control the Kato turnouts and powering everything. I think turnouts are easy to do - just set the correct switches underneath. The double slip is more complicated. Ideas? Have fun ;-)

I am currently using Peco code 55 on my fixed layout and it works great so far. However, for temporary layouts it would be almost impossible to use.

Just getting into N gauge. Started with Tomix track but I just bought a starter set for Kato. As an FYI, there are terminal adapters sold by Kato that will allow you to connect to a transformer with conventional terminals with out modification to the Kato terminal connector.

Good video. Yes, I would rather that Kato had the wood tie (sleeper) version on the double track offerings as well, since I model only 70's and mid 80's era railroads of the western US.
But all in all, I like their system. I'm thinking to use the Unitrack on my modules, and as you say, ballast everything to "blend" it together.

Thanks, I recently bought a Kato Modern European Eight passenger car Bullet train. It looked a little weird on the 1900's Train layout. Thought this Kato Version 11 track would be a good choice for a Nice temporary layout. Your video helped me decide if it would be big enough. The Bullet train is long. My Hobby shop had a nice open Box sale, and ended up saving a few bucks on the V11 kit. Thanks again for your time making the Video.

@@ModelTrainFun The new train is a Thalys, I like the V11 track for the elevated feature. Nice feature for a Bullet train.
I added the lights to the passenger cars. Looks good in dimly lighted room. The train runs as good in reverse as it does in forward. Even the red back lights and the front head lights switch from front locomotive to rear locomotive when changing directions. Passenger cars light up also in either forward or reverse.
The Cons are it is a bit difficult to set the train up on track. The Passenger cars only have one set of wheels, so they rely on the car directly in front for the second set of wheels.. It take quite a bit of force to get the couplers to click in. So I feel that it takes some care not to damage the cars connecting and disconnecting.
The train runs really smooth with not much motor noise. A nice clickity clack when running. The directions for installing lights was a bit sketchy, and I only found a couple vids on it when I first looked and felt the presenters did not get it right even though they got the lights working. When done I was sure I had the lights properly installed.
I Will start looking for another bullet train for the second track soon.

@@stevehughes5403 I really like the bullet trains as well and I am very envious on your Thalys. I do not have the patience to mount lights in the Thalys - I bet that looks really nice. As for the coupling - the coupling/uncoupling is often an issue as it has to be made so it is hidden. For bullet trains this always seems to be a hazzle so taking them of the track again is something is often discouraged. I suppose it gets more difficult with the lighting as well. Enjoy ;-)
From what I understand, you can change the power routing on the turnouts by changing the screws on the back plates. They then should be able to provide power to all directions. Check it out! :)

So there I power each track (4 tracks) - I have considered soldering, but have not dared so far. Know any solution? Thanks for the tip and enjoy ;-) Bo
The switches route power, so you can control a loco by pitting it in a siding and changing the switch so another train can pass it. With DCC, you can run feeders to every section, so sidings will be power regardless of switch operation. Then you can run locos on sidings and loops at the same time, as the DCC will determine the speed and direction of each loco independently.
Hi William, Thanks for the tip! Indeed having power everywhere makes it a lot more useful for DCC. There is also (if I remember correctly) a little switch at the bottom that helps bridge the power using DCC. How about you - do you also run DCC with success? Enjoy ;-)
@@ModelTrainFun Not all Kato switches have the switch on the bottom that allows selection of power routing or not. I run 2 locos with DCC (NCE PowerCab Starter Set). I have two loops with a double crossover connection. Each loop has a passing siding, there are several spurs off one siding for switching operations. I use the Kato power supply only to control the switches. The NCE provides power to every section of track and allows individual control of the direction, speed and function (whistle, bell, etc.) of each loco.

Hello. I like your video. You gave a fair opinion about Kato track. It is very easy to use, it does however take some thinking to come up with power solutions. If you try the number 6 turnouts they are a little different then the number 4 ones you are using in this video. Thanks again for the video.

I am glad you liked the video! Yes the Kato Unitrack are more sturdy - I prefer these as they are good for temporary layouts. However, other track types (such as the Fleischmann Piccolo) might be more beneficial on permanent layouts as you can use flex tracks and have a higher degree of flexibility for making curves and odd angles. Not sure what you mean by power the crossover. The crossover is built for analog operations and have therefore seperated power districts to "each leg". I am using DCC, so not really interested in this, so I am looking for a way to get same power to "all legs" without irreversible modifications.

Hello! Nice video and well explained👍 I'm using the Kato tracks as well and just ordered a V11. I love it! But I'm using analogue mode with multiple power packs power supply. If You use the Kato power pack the use of the turnout switches is very easy "plug and play".
Concerning the mixture of sleepers: The double tracks are only provided with concrete sleeper track or in a version even without sleeper, built in plain concrete.
The single Variation track packs are all provided with wooden sleeper tracks, however if you buy single tracks separately, you can buy them with concrete sleeper as well!
For the turnouts: They are only provided with wooden sleeper as this is tradionally correct for Japan. They use other artificial materials for turnout sleeper as well (like for Shinkansen track) but in such case the sleeper have a wooden colour still. From Kato you can also buy a single crossover piece where concrete and wooden sleeper are combined. Very traditionel japanese style! ⛩

The layout is 2x1.2 m (6.6x3.94ft). However, please note I had to squeeze the sets a little as this table is actually slightly too small (V11 is 7.7x4.2ft). I did not find the exterior dimensions of the V2 in the manual or on the box. Enjoy ;-)

Hello...For the holiday I received a new Kato N Scale Big Boy, I am in the planning stages of creating a layout table, knowing my limited space, hopefully going to be able to work with an approximately 80" x 40" platform. I understand the radius issue for the longer Loco's and hope to use similarily what you have here in the super elivated V11 or V16, probably the V16 kit and choosing to delete some of the length to fit my plans using two power packs and a couple of turn outs. My idea is not to be protypical, I do not want to recreate the wheel either ...just stick with what is available prebuilt but...things could change as you well know. My idea stems from the area around the Big Boy's home turf of Wyoming and Utah and to design a simplistic open land scene involving a basic vision of the Sherman Hill area with two different lines running someday. This is the way. Thanks for your insight!

I still use the Kato track when I am using my n-scale trains - unfortunately not as often as I like as I have limited space in my hotel room. As I live in Abu Dhabi I purchase my trains from an online store in Germany (www.haertle.de) - they have Kato. But it also looks like you can buy directly from Kato with international shipping (www.katomodeltrains.com/shipping-returns) or Kato USA (katousa.com). It doesn't look expensive to ship internationally.

Kato unitrack is the best n scale track. I have never had a piece break on me and it is fairly inexpensive.

How does Kato compare to Bachmann, Atlas or Ahearn?

So on the CS3 can you have more than one layout on it? AC vs DC? One layout for the HO C track then run minitrix layout?? Do they both get stored and you select them somewhere on the CS3? I only have the one layout on my CS3 marklin Cp. So is minitrix MFX or rather uses cards???? Sorry so many questions. All my old N has just been sitting as it Fleishman analog N. Great video
Hi Chas,
The CS3 is a digital device - It does not do analogue. The CS3 can control locomotives and accessories (e.g. turnouts and signals) that support Märklin Motorola (MM/MM2/FX), MFX and DCC. You can mix the protocols as you see fit on your layout or choose to use one or the other. In this way you can use the CS3 for 3-rail as well as 2-rail digital layouts.
If you have enough power you can connect the CS3 to more than one layout at a time as long as the addresses of locomotives and accessories do not overlap. You can use boosters if needed. In this way you can control a Märklin 3-rail layout and a Minitrix 2-rail layout at the same time. Just make sure that e.g. all addresses are separate.
On the CS3 itself you can make multiple track boards you can change between. This enables you to make large pieces of one layout - or multiple layouts. Note: The CS3 outputs 19V which some older N-scale decoders do not like. Märklin has stated that all Minitrix support this higher voltage, but you could be unfortunate that an older decoder of another brand does not.
Minitrix usually supplies a locomotive card so it can easily be added to the CS3 or MS2 by just inserting the card. I have not seen a Minitrix locomotive with MFX.

@@ModelTrainFun thank you, Ill try Kato in analogue. All of my N is older Fleischman and minitrix the m2 set looks like a good place to start for a temporary layout in N 😁to complement the CS3 running my Marklin. Thanks for the insight on multiple HO Marklin layouts on the CS3 I'll watch those.🚋

i have dcc but i use my kato power pack to controll my switchs
So I guess you use DCC for the locomotives and DC for the turnouts (switches)?
I Run Dc I Run Bachmann And I love it.
Do you realise that the screws underneath the turnouts have adjustment to make all lines leading from the switch always live.
There fore it is dcc ready as it is. The screws underneath need unscrewing and screwing back into a different hole underneath, it’s labled underneath what each hole does ☺️
Hi Aaron, yes - I like that you can change the Kato turnouts like that. It makes it more suitable for digital layout (DCC). Unfortunately, Kato has not prepared the double crossover in the same way, so this one requires special wirering. Enjoy ;-)

An easy solution is to just add more power feed track on the various sections of your layout so that you have no dead zones
Absolutely the easiest solution and the most optimal for permanent layouts. Trying to find an easy way for temporary layouts trying to avoid too many wires... However, more power feeds will also give a more reliable layout. It's about the balance. Enjoy ;-)

Hi Philip, the only n scale tracks I know are the Kato ones. To me they do not take up too much space. However, these are "modular" tracks that limit your options. I prefer this, but others might prefer more freestyle tracks. You may want "flextrack" as these can be bend in any direction you like. I unfortunately, do not have any experience with this type of track. Enjoy ;-)

why the different colors of the trckks..big minus
This is because I bought a mix of tracks with wooden and concrete sleepers. To me the mix is ok as you typically find these track color differences in real life.
