This is a very “bad“ video. I had a train set for my 5th birthday - a clockwork “Tin” set ( that was back in the 1950’s). I had so much fun with this until the mechanism failed (and my father couldn’t get it repaired). After watching this video, which came up randomly on my feed, you have re-awakened a bit of my childhood and made me start searching for suppliers near me that carry Kato products. Something that will definitely keep me “interested” and “busy” now I can no longer work. A great, informative, no-nonsense review of these sets (but I suspect very “bad” for my limited finances now I am retired 😜). Thanks 😀👍🇦🇺
In 1999 I packed up the house and my model railroad and moved to a job in a new state. For the next ten years I was constantly traveling then was offered and accepted an early retirement. My wife and I then loaded up the car and started our own travels visiting and camping in nearly every National Park, this went on for years until my wife became ill and now we're pretty much stuck at home. So after over twenty years in boxes I unpacked my trains to see how they fared. The Lionel needed new traction tires since the rubber had hardened so I wasn't hopeful on all my "N" scale equipment. I set up some test track and sadly a number of the locos even after maintenance wouldn't run well. The Rivarossi were DOA, as were the Trix. I didn't have any Barfman but the Kato and Atlas were a surprise, they worked perfectly so the track was expanded and here we go again,... Yes, I now have two Kato bullet trains zooming around,
There a lot of train sets in Japan. When I visited my brother last August in Fukuyama, while he and his Japanese wife were looking to replace old vacuum cleaner, I was checking out the train sets in the next aisle. It made me feel like a kid again.
Love Kato, they make great trains. You can run two trains on the M2 layout. Keep one parked on the outside turnout and run the other on the main loop. When done running the main loop park it adjacent to locomotive on the turn out. Switch the turnout so power flows to locomotive on the turnout and let it run the loop. Be careful, don't switch from forward to backwards with full power. It's not good for the locomotive. Always turn power down then switch direction. 😊
Kato makes the best in model trains! I love their track systems. N scale should be the most popular scale lol it does great for small tight spaces such as apartments and such.
They need to make a new one... KATO-V ... as in vertical wall trains. Then EVERYBODY with no space can just build it on their wall. Where's my patent attorney... lol.
I've gone down the Kato Unitrack rabbit hole with a M1 oval set, V1 passing siding set, and island platform set. So easy to setup, put away, and expand upon when space is at a premium. Reminds me of playing with the old Tomy train sets from 20+ years ago.
I have the M2+V3 layout. Great for yard switching operations. Easy way to run multiple trains on a fairly compact layout. I bought those to hold me over for when I have more time and money avaliable to devote to it. I've had many hours of entertainment, while keeping that fire burning for it in my mind. When I do the big layout, I am laying track and ballast. As much as I love the Unitrack, there are a few situations where it won't work for me, like a steel mill or switching yard for example. That's a lot of track that is typically all at ground level. If you are running a raised road bed though, it's great, and you can add ballast or airbrush it to be pretty realistic looking for most people.
All I am going to say is that you answered one of my questions that has been bugging me for a long time. I have watched a lot of videos by the experts and they failed to do so. Thank you for your efforts and I think with Kato it helps to read Japanese!
Quite simply that I do not need a loop to hook up the track. I can do a linear track and do not have to close the loop without doing anything special. When you are first testing the train, that is what you do. my goal is to build a switching layout so I can do the "train game" with my grandchildren. Kato seems to offer the best products for us casual guys. @@BeatTheBushDIY
Really like your presentation. I thinking of buying the same M2 track. My only question is since these are made in Japan, do I need to be concerned withit working in the US? Is the power plugs the same?
This is very helpful! I live in Japan and my 6yo son is interested in model railroad sets but I have no clue where to start. There is an endless array of products I can purchase online. I’ve been trying to search for the right products to purchase, how these train models even work, determine where each part goes. It’s overwhelming and since we’re primarily english speakers, reading online product descriptions that are in Japanese don’t help very much. 😂😂
When all else fails,follow the instructions.Thank you for reminding us who "think" we don't need directions and have to spend 3 more hours trying to figure it out.

I believe the railroad crossing doubles as a "re-railer" meaning that if the train derails, it will re-reail itself when running over the railroad crossing. Kind of a safety mechanism if you have a large layout and cannot always get to the trains. Also the "switcher thing" is called a "turnout" or "point" if you are in the UK. 😊 Great video, you are good at going through the different products. You have potential to become a huge model railroad UA-camr (should you decide to do more in the train hobby). 👍
Just today I got the M2 on Christmas And by god it’s a bigger loop than I thought … I had the same thing as you where it’s too big to fit on my table …
I bought the set, N700 set after I left Japan, after living there. I always took the N700 to Kyoto. Also, bought the JR Ome line, the orange striped one, since I rode that a lot. Seems the best place to buy these are from shops in Japan. Like all hobbies, it can get very expensive.
Nice video, I think I'm going to pick up some Kato track, and build an N scale portable layout, possibly on a hollow core door...or maybe a DIY construction a bit smaller than a door, 30x60 or so... Cheers, and I hope some trains bring you many hours of joy...

It can get very very expensive for a hobby. But, looking at the various UA-cam N, HO, O Scale Layouts, it can be fun and rewarding using your talents to make scenery. There are other scales, but the 3 I’ve listed are the most common IMO. The Kato Unitrack System is what I plan to use. I just purchased this very Starter Set for around $175 dollars US. I wanted to start an around the walls 12 foot by 20 foot “Double Track Layout”, but doing the calculations to use the Kato N Scale Unitrack, it came close to $1,000 in buying the necessary materials. That didn’t include an Engine and any cars (Rolling Stock). Nor did it include any additional turnouts and wiring for a larger layout. I believe “Feeder Wires” for power to the track are recommended every 3 feet, some say every 10 feet or 20 feet. You must also use the proper gauge wire for the Buss Line and Feeders. I suggest getting some reference books regarding how to start the hobby, layout books, scenery, wiring and what type of control systems you will use. Now, wait for December and putting up the Tree in the Living Room or Recreation area and then put your oval of track around the tree. Keep the pets and young children away from your railroad empire. Sticker Shock!!!
Hi mate, love your vids, cheers for the upload mate. Love train sets of any gauge, OO, N, you name it. I can anticipate how reliable and durable Kato products are. All my trainsets were Hornby OO and sadly they all broke down. Don't know how common they are in America but certainly Kato is the way to go. Just out of interest, does Kato USA do international trains like the French TGV, the German ICE, the British Avanti etc? Also do the tracks and controller and the train itself whole come as one are they bought separately? Thanks once again, Umesh
The voltage is low enough that if you touch it with one hand dry, it would do nothing. If you hands are wet and you use one hand on each track, that may be dangerous.
Hi, I want to start in world of N scale but I have a big basic question: Some recommendations in unitrack set from KATO web seller use for example 1/150 scale train but this Shinkansen set is 1/160 scale, so; Are there some problems if I buy Unitrack set like KATO 20-913 with Shinkansen set 1/160 scale? Nice video. One suggestion. Never ever suddenly throw the train in the opposite direction it is traveling or you will ruin a really nice Kato train set. It is not designed to do that. Take care of your trains and they will last you for a lifetime.

I suppose 100 200 to 700 is logical. Then they made 700 faster but it's not really 800 series since it's a incremental acceleration change. So I suppose they picked 'N' or 'Enu'. Why they picked 'N' and not 'Z'? Or maybe 701? I suppose we have to ask the people in charge of naming it. But 700 < N700 < N700A < N700S... faster and faster acceleration!
Did you buy it in USA or which city did you buy it in Japan? I think I saw this product when I visited Osaka this September. But I didn't realize they were a train model package. A little bit regrettable but still I bought the 300 series Shinkansen train head model there. Very precise manufacturing of them. Also I love you video. Thank you.
I sold all my N-Scale Train Stuff but Kato Locomotives and Track are the only way to go in N. N cars - there are different brands that are good - Atlas has the most - pretty good.
Fleischmann makes better locomotives and arguably better track than any other manufacturer in N scale. And let's not forget their best on the market DCC system. Kato provides some interesting options in terms of infrared level crossings, catenary systems and inclined embankments for parallel curved tracks (why only for parallel?) and have some interesting radii available, but it lacks curved turnouts. Kato track looks good for code 80 track, but not the best. N scale has some serious advantages, but also has some serious drawbacks.
Kato has some really neat little trains, I'm quite tempted to get several eventually... Heh, that one makes me think of a running shoe. Or a duck. Quack! XD
Yeah those long cars and the speed, you need long sweeping curves. It's the reason the new Amtrak train in the East coast area can't, i believe, do 180 mph top speed because the old track is too short in radius. I think it's around 150 mph? I can't recall the exact numbers. I thought this N scale set had tilting cars for the curves? You want strange, look at the Japan T scale. Model railway for fleas.
$90 expensive? Wow, hadn't thought of it that way. I hail from H0 land, where a single passenger car can easily cost €60 and locos start at €140 or so.

I no longer have the track but I still kept the train for display. No space for the track. So I probably wont be buying new trains since I cannot demo it on the track.
You could have made more videos on it and then have a playlist . Oh that and you can make the tracks shorter by just not using all the straight pieces . If it’s not possible I must know . I bought the same set, Kato M2, while shopping at the Garden shopping mall in Ariake, Tokyo. They had a cool setup.

That is a rerailer. You can use it per see in your circuit or integrate it on a level crossing if you build a layout.
I’m getting this track set to got with my N-scale collection, I currently have the kato Acs-64 bookcase set. It will look good together.
I find it strange that the coach with the pantograph isn't the motorized coach.

Perhaps the plastics are more durable? Motors run longer? Tolerances are tighter?

Yes, Kato does do European high-speed trains. They’ve also made the Glacier Express.
Do you get electrocuted when you accidentally touch the tracks while the train is running?
The voltage is low enough that if you touch it with one hand dry, it would do nothing. If you hands are wet and you use one hand on each track, that may be dangerous.
The tracks remind me of the C-track from Märklin,but in N-scale instead of H0-scale
I was forced to switch from Märklin to N scale, and this was the very reason I choose for Kato tracks. Never regret it.

I think I bought it at a big box retailer in Tokyo. Maybe it was BicCamera.

Perhaps you could look at the bachmann or tomix versions of thomas the tank engine 🤔

Fellow weirdo here I guess….as I have been looking at buying my first model railroad set for the last few weeks after having on this weird, out-of-blue urge to buy a train set.

Personally... I prefer Tomix because the track does not take too much space 😅😅
