I was blown away by the visual effects, it was nothing like anything I had seen before. I still remember Slippy's face and the TIMES UP message when your turn in the contest was over. I agree! Graphics are treated as the most important aspect of a game now-a-days, but I have always felt that if the story was engaging, the soundtrack emotionally stimulating, and the interface intuitive and not too complicated, the game's playability is far superior even without graphics requiring two graphics cards with 9 billion cores to run.

I'm not as familiar with newer game soundtracks, but even something as simple as Super Mario Land on Gameboy works so well for me, specifically the end scene of the game. There were the near-tears of beating the game and then the music from the end had me chocking up tears when I was maybe 12. "I'm not gonna cry...I'm not gonna cry..."

As a kid of the 80s that grew up obsessed with the original Star Wars trilogy, the release of Star Fox was amazing. Stages like Space Armada made it feel like you were an X-Wing battling through a fleet of Star Destroyers. And the ending scene after destroying Andross invoked the feeling of the Millennium Falcon escaping the destruction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi.

The General Pepper being a reference to Sgt. Pepper was made more obvious in the Nintendo Power comic version of Star Fox, where the general was reflecting on his youth and said something to the effect "Back when I was just sergeant Pepper".

Not only did you explain those things, but you also taught me that you get a 5% bonus for each surviving squadmate after each level. And an in depth explanation of the Slot Machine boss? I know it's been said a lot, but you truly go above and beyond in these videos.

I got Star Fox for my 11th birthday. I remember dying so many times, that I put it down, and didn't pick it back up until I was in high school. 😅 Once I could actually play it well, it quickly became my favorite game. Here are some tips that hopefully can help enhance your playthrough:
If you destroy the Centipede enemy's head, in the Course 1 Asteroid Belt, it will trigger a chain reaction that makes the whole thing explode. I actually didn't know it counted as multiple enemies towards your percentage.
In the Space Armada level, with enough button mashing, you can totally take out just about all the capital ships you come across. The top area of the first set of gray ships is vulnerable (where their lasers come from, breaking helps here because you have to be close), the three flashing points on the Star Destroyer looking one (in the second section, just beyond the blue checkpoint ring), and the puffy looking red and white ones are just fair game (though you will need to break to get the first one).
I usually save up my bombs on course one until I get to the Atomic Base, then I just use 4 bombs to destroy it. This way, I don't have to worry about shooting the pods. The core won't even open.
When you are fighting above Venom, precision shots against the homing missile sections can save your thumbs, and also help prevent the annoyance of your teammates' complaints down to a minimum.
When you fight Phantron above Venom, DO NOT USE A NOVA BOMB!!!. If you do, he'll fire a homing missile at you that can kill you, or at least weaken your shields considerably. I remember doing that and getting killed when I first started managing to reach him (once he even shot a second one at me to make sure I was done 😅).
When you face Phantron 2, after he transforms, if you can get a good rhythm on him when he isn't split, he will always miss every time he shoots a rocket at you. He will fire a rocket every time you hit him. Also, when he does the somersault to land on you, if you are quick enough on the draw, as he is landing, you can break and shoot him before passing underneath his legs. When Phantron 2 splits into three, you only need to hit the real one twice for him to go on to the next phase in his attack pattern. What isn't shown is at the end of his pattern, he'll sort of try to kick you, sending the leg flying at you.
For the Boss of Titania, if you don't take him out fast enough, he'll create a sort of decoy that looks like three of him placed next to each other, and will fire that off at you. His pattern starts over from there.
I tend to stay in 3rd person mode in Sector-Y, but that's neither here nor there (just preference). Precision shots against the orange sting rays are very helpful to keep from hitting the big blue ones.
When fighting the Galactic Rider planet-side on Course 2 Venom, you will notice that there are arrows on the ground that can help you figure out where it's going. That way you can avoid bumping into it.
On Fortuna, sometimes Monarch Dodora will sit down, and then fly, in an effort to make you crash in to it. It can also move off into the distance, sit down and shoot fire at you until you close in on it again.
One time I managed to get hit by the Great Commander while looping back around above Venom, and the camera ended up getting stuck. I couldn't see the boss, but I heard him shooting at me. Occasionally he would be able to land a laser hit on me, but it was taking so long that I just reset. 😭
The red pillars in course 3 Venom fall when you shoot them, but the ones on course 1 Venom just kind of disintegrate after enough shots, and felt more satisfying to button mash through.
If you shoot the walls with the blue arrows that flash back and forth, you actually lock it in to whichever direction it will move in.
During the second fight, the iron balls that the Great Commander shoots make the same sound as the yellow lasers (which are weak), but actually do a lot of damage. Having good aim is really crucial in the first phase of the fight. The exhaust port opens and closes, so you need good timing to be successful with a bomb in that part of the fight. If the first part of the fight drags on too long, it gets significantly harder. He'll start spinning and launching iron balls like crazy. After he finishes spinning, he'll even shoot out a bunch of them into the air at once so they will rain down on you. He does that twice, and then the pattern repeats.
Thanks for reviewing such an awesome game! 😁

I feel like if someone grew up with games such as this and Goldeneye 64, they can go back to them in 2024 without caring too much about the relatovely antiquated 3D, whereas very young people today might not care for these games at all. I'm 23 but watched my dad play these games and they were old even in the 2000s but nostalgia can really help one continue to love them today.

Amazing guide, but there is one bit you left out.
When fighting Phantron in Venom's Orbital stage, if you get the idea to fire a Nova Bomb at him, he'll not only take no damage from it, but he'll then launch a heat-seeking missile at you that is a one-hit kill if it connects. Despite it being heat-seeking, if you don't move, the missile will lose its tracking and fly away.

    1. I just discovered this channel and I'm already in love with the content. This game was a childhood birthday present for me. I adore it and still play it to this day. Keep up the great work!
    2. I learned a new strat from you, fly vertical (holding L or R) to be more accurate. Genius
    3. On Venom's surface, for the pivoting walls with blue arrows, you can shoot the arrow to lock in their direction and easily avoid them instead of timing a boost to avoid them @1:53:24. When you do this, the arrow with change to a solid white arrow and will no longer change direction. Might be easier for people still learning to master the game.

So thrilled to see you included the history of Argonaut Software and Starglider here. These games were hugely inspirational to me, particularly Starglider II, which was not only visually stunning with its solid shaded polygon graphics, but its open-world, open-universe exploration-based gameplay mixed with arcade action would end up heavily influencing my own career. Thanks!
And just to add, I STILL love this style of graphics! There's something magical and imaginative about flat-shaded polygons and the strange and curious shapes developers created with them out of the pure joy of experimenting with the new technology. It's more than just nostalgia, I really believe there's something you can achieve in these styles that creates a sense of space and surreal feeling that modern graphics, as good as they are, often lose sight of.

Damned well done. Back when I actively played this in the 90s, I could only complete the first two paths, and only 100% the easiest of them. I never even knew the slot machine secret and Out of This Dimension existed. Fantastic work on 100%ing all three paths, on top of providing a fantastic guide for the purpose.

@@Sci-Fi-Mike for me it's a tie between this channel and watching Bob Ross paint landscapes.
Learning the intricacies of oil paint and watching it be applied and how it moves on the canvas is also really soothing.

It is truly amazing that this came out in 93 just like it was amazing when the original Star Wars came out in '77. The visual presentation definitely requires the use of imagination to really get into the essence of the Epic Saga of this game, but the music, the detailed backgrounds, the small samples of voices, the creativity and enemy design, and reuse of enemies implying revenge encounters, You really do feel like a young Ace pilot battling against a space wizard. I was only a year old when this came out, But I can totally imagine the spectacle and absolute fanaticism for this game when it came out. It truly feels like the first bold step into the immersive 3D spaces of video games we have today.

13:17 Regarding voice acting, the big issue at the time was storage space. The biggest SNES cartridge had 6 megabytes of storage. Consider that also compression formats like MP3 weren't publically available, so using large amount of voice acting would be impossible. Voice acting became common on the Playstation, because not only CDs could hold a lot of digital data (around 100 times as much as a SNES cart), you could also just hold the voice acting lines as CD audio.

enemy names being revealed only when you beat the game explains why I never knew the enemies had names in so many games growing up lmao. I think I made it to the 3rd level in Star Fox and that was it. But it was still a fun game even if I couldn't beat it.

I have fond memories of this game. My parents often liked to have a night on the weekends where we all played together and the first time I saw this game we'd rented it and Wings II: Aces High, a WWI flight game.
So it was a kind of funny juxtaposition to go from WWI biplanes to futuristic Arwings.

I remember my brother visiting a friend and playing this when it came out. He told me about an asteroid with a face that you could shoot that would turn into a blackhole. Sounded unlikely to me, but many years later I discovered videos like this and it turned out to be true! That was 30 years ago : )

  • @psychedelicartistry
    @psychedelicartistry 3 місяці тому

The black hole was talked about in the instruction manual. I was still a kid when I first played Star Fox and saw the thing with the secret black hole level. Always wanted to find it. So, to my amazement, I actually found it when I was around 20. And then I found 'Out of this Dimension' after looking it up online, and my mind was blown, b/c that one wasn't even talked about in the instruction manual. I love games like this with crazy secrets that take a lot of effort to find. That's why I love DKC2 and 3 so much. I first found the Lost World in DKC3 after messing around and driving in circles around those rocks, and always wondered what the final item after the skiis was, and when I unlocked the gyrocopter, my mind, again, was blown. I then went back to DKC2 to see if there was a similar end-like scenario, and finally beat all lost world levels to reveal: Krocodile Core!!!
I really love games like this and I wish they still put clever high-effort secrets in games today. Maybe some indie games still do it, I'm not sure. MMX-MMX3 also had Hayduken, Shoriyuken, and Gold Armor X/Z-Sabre secrets that I didn't find til I was in my 20s.
Was anybody else fortunate enough to be a 90s kid? I miss the 90s games it felt like a different world back then!! It literally feels like the future they used to talk about back then today. The leap in technology is crazy I feel bad for anybody born after the 1990s who can't appreciate how far tech has come in the last 30 years.
