- In this video I attempt to justify buy 2 brand new off road bikes back to back. The 2023 Honda CRF450RL and the 2024 KTM 300 XC-W.

You did the right thing if you want the ultimate single track trailriding enjoyment.
The CRF450RL is happiest on the kind of terrain that allows you to keep some speed up, like 3rd gear and higher.
That's where the excellent straight-line stability, excellent suspension, and great power can be used, appreciated, and enjoyed.
I have never owned a 300 2-stroke, but I have owned a 200XC-W and a 150XC-W, and those bikes will outmaneuver and be the obvious choice over the CRF450RL on real singletrack trails.
As you say, two different bikes for two different jobs.
I have a 2022 honda 450rl and a 2022 Gasgas ec300. I agree totally with you.
Nice!! Which one do you end up riding more?
I bought a brand new 500 exc-f this year , fun build and liking the dual sport thing. It was hard not to buy that 450 RL sitting next to it at the dealer. Really like the Honda also.
I don't own either of those bikes, but I agree 100% with your strategy. I own a Beta 300rr which is my single track weapon, and a Beta 480rr which is my unicorn. I also own a KTM 625 for doubling my wife and ADV work (which I don't really do at this point anyway). Life is good :)
I don’t think 1 bike can really do it all. I think your right on two different bikes for two different jobs. It’s like taking your Harley across country, can you do it of course can you be more comfortable on a street glide hell yeah. So I think you made the right choice. IMO
Sick bikes brother. Have u added a flywheel weight to the Honda ? Heard that helps the bike lug better. If I could convince the wife I would have both also.
I didn’t but I do have experience with that and it helps a good bit! Now that I have the KTM I’m okay keeping the Honda snappy. How forgiving is she? I just showed up with both of mine 🤣
I cant remember if you have an ecu on your CRF. I have heard that is what is really needed for single track. That being said it is still heavy for that comparatively. Hopefully I will be getting a CRF soon, for fire roads, and bdrs. I know you have not ridden alot on road. What did you think while you were there. I had a dr650 years ago as my "do it all", i hoping the CRF will fill that same role.
I know you didn't ask me, but I have a CRF450L. I got it last year, a 2019 with only 750 miles on it when I bought it, and still completely stock at purchase. It now has about 7,000 miles on it. I put the AIM ECU from TacoMoto in my bike, with the toggle switch for the race map and the enduro/single track map. I use the race map for wide open stuff and on the road. I use the enduro map for single track. I have a Beta XTrainer if I'm going to do any highly technical stuff. The CRF450L is really good at everything other than technical, enduro-like stuff. The extra heft and geometry makes it really stable in high speed stuff. It's a whoop eating monster. It totally slays fire roads and bdr sort of stuff. I've tried a few different tire combinations, currently have a Tusk D-sport on the rear with a Kenda TrackMaster up front and it goes anywhere I'm willing to take it, without fuss. That includes stints at 70+ on Texas highways. I've even taken it on Interstate-10 west of San Antonio. It's not great for interstate riding, as there it's a light bike and does tend to get blown around by the winds coming off trucks. No dual sport is great on the interstate! If you do get a CRF, my suggestion would be first replace the stock seat (it's really a device of torture after half an hour or so). The ECU upgrade does improve the bike, a lot, but it's not really the case that the bike is unrideable without that upgrade; you may find the upgrade worth it (I sure did) or you may not. Of course you'll have to do oil changes more often than on the dr650, but I find the performance makes it worth it. Good luck!
Molecule flag hand guards - protect the levers on tip overs? any first hand experience with them working?
That’s my hope. Oddly enough I dumped my bike 5 times in one day before I put them on. Haven’t dumped it once since the install. Haha. If you aren’t already, leave your levers slightly loose so they hopefully rotate on impact. I even put teflon tape under the clamps. Most people already do this but in case you didn’t know.
For what it’s worth I like the molecule flags so much I’m putting them and the skid plate on the new KTM as well.
Hope Honda didn't use the same starter set up as the rx. Some sort of design defect as they fail repeatedly, like there is an engineering flaw and things don't align. They keep failing and without a kick your SOL event o get out of the woods never mind the expensive fix that simply puts the same soon to fail parts back in. Some guys well the cogs together and that seems to be a fix of sorts.
I haven’t heard about that so hopefully not an issue. I’m in some L and RL groups on Facebook so I’ll look into it. Thanks for the heads up!
