As a long time bookreader who has re-read the series countless times. I love it so far. It's all very different, but also the same story. It's nice to have it re-told in a new way, rather than just re-visualized against what's in my head.

"Overgrown skyscrapers". Good catch. Because that's exactly what they are.
"What is a Wisdom?" The Wisdom of a village is a woman who heads the Women's Circle (the group of women you saw at the beginning). She's in charge of advising the Mayor as well as things like healing and predicting the weather (referred to as "listening to the wind"). They typically don't marry or have children, hence Egwene's reluctance here.
"Is it in a sick pattern like in Game of Thrones?" Essentially, yes. The bodies are in the shape of a Dragon's Fang, which in the book is scrawled on someone's door if they are suspected of being a Darkfriend (someone who supports the Dark One). It's also the symbol for the male half of the Power. It's a bit of an Easter Egg for book readers.
"What is that, a swan?" It's a heron. Good catch. Also good catch that he has some sort of history there. Tam is a very interesting character, and that's all I'll say for now.
"Moiraine and her possible boyfriend" I know that bath scene is a bit confusing, but they are not romantically involved. Lan is her Warder. That means that he protects her at all costs and they are Bonded together with magic. They each feel what the other feels and that's how they can synchronize so well in battle.
You caught a lot of details here that other new watchers might've missed. I'm really glad you liked it. I'm a long time book reader so some of the changes from the books make me a bit nervous, but it's also incredibly exciting to see all of this on screen for the first time. I'm looking forward to your takes on the other episodes!

You're very perceptive. Many of the things you picked up on are on the right track.
I won't spoil anything from you but the way I explained it to my wife (who's never read any of it) is they basically just scaled up everyone's age and story a bit to be more mature.
Rand/Egwene aren't just kids googling eyes at each other, they have a physical relationship.
Perrin isn't just a timid boy afraid to hurt people, he's a grown man, married and now carrying a serious emotional burden.
Mat isn't just a prankster and troublemaker but comes from a real troubled home which I think lends credence to his wily nature.
Nynaeve has a solid reason to hate Aes Sedai instead of just a generic distrust and over protective tenancy for the kids.
I don't think any of it deters from the main plot and most of it lends credence to these characters for a more adult audience, as opposed to the YA crowd the books were more aimed at.

My take on what’s up with people killing animals and putting them in weird shapes: easy way to show how evil they are. Killing an animal to eat? you’re fine. Killing an animal randomly for no reason? You’re not good, possibly evil. Killing many animals for no reason? Def evil. Killing many animals for no reason and putting them in shapes? The most evil, you’re dealing basically with the devil.
And there you have it! Scale of evil on the basis of animal killing, done. (PS, great reaction!)

No spoilers here, but a general anthropological explanation of things. As Moiraine says in the beginning men tried to lock away darkness itself and because of this the world was broken in cataclysmic ways. So you have this civilization where men and women are powerful. Men do this thing and because of it they can’t use this power (won’t give anymore away, but you get a hint in that 1st scene where the red Aes Sedai are chasing that guy). So the world and civilization collapses and new towns, cities and eventually civilizations rise up again. At the core is the “white tower” which Moiraine references a couple of times. Each little town maintains a distant copy of that civilizational structure, and adapts over centuries to local customs and needs. I assume a remote place like 2 Rivers had both men and women who could “listen to the wind” but, because of what happened with those powerful men, the local men stopped listening and then that group evolved into a women only circle.
Just think of Ancient Rome. When they fell, the main power switched to the Vatican which was basically the Roman theological structure but now geared towards a different religion. All over the fallen empire local structures have evolved over the least 1600 years, but if you go to England, or Sicily or France or any other part of what was once Rome, there are clerical and administrative government positions and traditions that trace their roots back to Roman times.
Just a long comment that the books do an incredible job of world building and hopefully they’ll convert this throughout the series like they did in this 1st episode.

Really not a bad take on the the material (not a great one)l. Now there is a huge amount of changes from the book (at least so far), but to compare it to a series I know you love, The Expanse. There are 14 books (15 kind of). And the producers have to know the chance of getting a 14 season run is pretty damn unlikely. So they are hoping for 8 seasons, and at 8 episodes a season. The books range from around 700 - 1200 pages, so they aren't small. Now imagine Leviathan Wakes (570 or so pages) and it getting condensed not into the 15 wonderful episodes we got, but 8. And this season is based on 1 book (that's nearly 800 pages, and parts of the prequel book).
And like GOT they aged up all the teenaged characters. So they are all adults now (makes casting easier and more believable, and makes a general audience freak out less when the characters get into adult situations (typically violence and really hard moral choice to make).

There are definite changes from the books, but I can already see where they are going with many of them, and understand why they made those changes. A few changes present in episodes 2 & 3 made me scratch my head, though.

@@Merecir I think it's more that we weren't introduced to the governing of the village at all so that's why the village council is excluded. The women's circle is only here so that we can see Egwene's induction in it/coming of age. The only leadership position that is discussed is the Wisdom since it's relevant. They can only have what's natural to have in the plot since we're not in a character's mind like in the books where they can do some infodump casually(That's the mayor, he's the head of the village council and with the women's circle they lead the village). Since the news of war in Ghealdan wasn't something new stirring the villagers, and the dark rider was skipped altogether there is no reason to have a meeting.

Though they have made some really significant changes from the books, I’m not against the changes so far, since they might help with some issues non book readers would have with understanding characters and motivations. In comparison to the book, it is extremely rushed and fast, and whilst I generally like fast pacing this was way too much cut, some major scenes are missing, Jordan is literally a master of slow pacing ... I still like it but it would have been better if they took more time with build-up ... and in the book you everything is explained, here in the show they did not bother to explain anything, for example, the meaning of the heron marked sword nor dead ship arranged in a dragon fang symbol, or what the red Aes Sedai was doing to that man in the opening sequence ( she was not killing him just taking his ability to channel) ... episode 2 and 3 have much better pacing ...

Due to the race swapping, the sex swapping and the casting of incredibly ugly people in the leading roles, I could NEVER get into this series. I had read the books, and really liked them. Why? Because it was interesting the way that the SOURCE of the Power they all use was divided into a male side and a female side. The only way one sex could draw power from the other sex's side was through linking with that sex. Sadly, however both sexes were wary of the other because in that position the one in control could destroy the others in the link, so it was an art that had been lost since the Breaking of the World. In this show, it's as though the men don't have ANY access to power, and when you see that they do, the ugly angular faced blonde and her group hunt that man down and 'gentle' or kill him. All the women (who are also the leaders of the kingdoms) fear the coming of the Dragon Reborn because they know that their power to rule over everyone else will end. They don't want that.
