In case it hasn't already been mentioned... Robert Jordan tips his hat a lot to Tolkien in the first half of the book... Has to do with what publishers at this time were wanting. Also gives readers something familiar to get into the series before it goes hard left. The full series definitely goes its own way.
On the audiobook interview he said he wanted a Tolkien-esque story where the people really don't want to go on an adventure. Like, someone taps you on the shoulder and says 'hey bro you're gonna save the world, and you gotta come with me' Like, nah bro I'm cool
Really it's the first 3 books that have the "Tolkienisms" or to put it another way, the first 3 books were the ones being the most scrutinized by the publisher and RJ had to answer to and satisfy them. He got his full book deal and freedom to really do what he wanted without someone looking over his shoulder and as anyone who has read the books, they know that book 4 is when the series truly starts to explode and takes its first steps from being a good series to a great one. As far as the White Cloaks/Children of the Light, there are 2 wings within them, the standard military wing (the more chill dude) and the Inquisitors/Questioners (Black murderer dude) who are kind of the priests in a way.
"They didn't come to a town where they meet Aragorn, though." That's because in this story, Aragorn was already with them when they left home -- his name is Lan.
Moiraine said “they attacked the village we were in”. Which is true. They were in Tarron Ferry when the trollocs attacked. She didn’t say the were “from there”
@@SleepyWaffles The Two Rivers is the region. The village we see in episode one is Emond's Field and the town they went through to cross the river is Taren Ferry. (The river being the Taren - the name is quite literal) In the TV series, they seem to always say Two Rivers when they mean Emond's Field. I don't know if they just happen to always refer to the region or if they actually decided Two Rivers is the name of the village now, but... in the books it is as I described.
Fun fact: the "Emond" from Emond's Field is King Aemon, the very same king from the story of Manetheren. Another example of how the wheel turns and stories turn into legends which fade into myths over time.

They didn’t awaken evil, they created it. Your initial thoughts of how they were cursed for not helping are closer to the truth. I don’t know if the show plans to reveal the entire story or not so possible SPOILERS The people of Aridhol, through one particular bad advisor to the leader became more and more zealous about fighting the evil of the dark one and their zealot attitude turned them first against anyone of the outside, hence why they didn’t help Manetheren and later built their wall. Once there was no outsider left to hate and be suspicious of, they turned on each other, killing each other and from that hate an evil grew that’s purely human and nothing to do with the dark one. The black ooze you saw is hate and fear given form. It’s called Mashadar.
‘Is Moiraine giving her strength to the horses?’ Not directly. She’s using the Power to wash away their fatigue. But wielding the One Power takes exertion, plus she’s badly injured on top of that. So it is taxing Moiraine quite heavily to keep up their pace of travel and not kill their horses. The White Cloak commander’s suggestion to seek an Aes Sedai was possibly a trap. They would send messages to Whitebridge (via pigeon) to watch the gates for Moiraine’s group, and follow them to any Aes Sedai she might find. Bing, bang, boom, another captured Aes Sedai. Your thoughts on the White Cloaks are pretty close on point. The Crusades meets the Spanish Inquisition. Religious zealots through and through. People that use the One Power are servants of the Dark One, and must be purged.
For the Whitecloaks, I felt like they put that in to show how divided they are even within their own order. I assume the main dude was Bornhald. But I don't think that under any circumstances a Whitecloak would recommend seeking out an Aes Sedai but I also like your theory which fits with that sentiment.
@@StefanPiano yes they mention the Lord Captain during the opening sequence, that would be Geofram Bornhald who was always described as the most fair and reasonable of the Whitecloaks. Watch the X-ray bonus content. They have animated shorts. One of them explains the fall of Mantheran. The story Moraine tells the kids after they sing. Awesome review BTW
It's very easy to come to the opposite conclusion, but Mat's taking the dagger is not what caused that black thing, called Mashadar in the novels, to wake up and attack. They are related phenomena, but one did not directly cause the other.
Maybe like chimps their body fat ratio makes it very hard for trollocs to swim. Also Taren Ferry was the name of the town that the ferry was in. The questioners are pretty brutal even for the whitecloaks, also she didn't lie about about coming from Taren Ferry she destroyed the Ferry in the beginning
Whitecloaks are basically a mercenary group based off of the ideals of Artur Hawkwing (Egwene mentioned him while taking with Moiraine), but the Questioners take it to extremes. Think the Spanish Inquisition, and you won't be far off.

Honestly hearing Bornhald telling Moiraine to ask an Aes Sedai for help was a bit out of character. While he may be the least bad of the bunch, no Whitecloak would suggest anything like that. Guess they wanted to make a more clear cut between less fanatical WC and Questioners (though there are plenty of crazy fanaticals between non questioners too). The way they edited the scene made it look like Mat activated the black stuff (in the books it's more like mist), Mashadar, by picking up the dagger, but it actually comes out when it gets dark.
