I'm literally making more money as a Janitor, than as an Indie Game Developer. If you don'y have a patreons or a publisher, or personal saved money (or a job) - it's most likely to not having enought money to live, while making the game.
Have loved watching your progress as a game dev since you were developing Chess Survivors. I don't comment a lot, but I just wanted to leave a comment to say you're doing great, and I love to see these videos in which you honestly talk about your journey and what it's like. I think Hexagod is looking awesome, can't wait to see what it's like when you're done with it!
Incredible that you were so transparent with the numbers. Really shows what's possible with a single person starting out with one (hopefully soon two) commercial games. I hope Hexagod exceeds your expectations.
As a European seeing some of those cost estimates made my jaw drop. 120 dollars for phone, Holy c**p I pay 10 euros per month here in France. Anyways, loving the content, interesting as always !
In sweden you can have a phone bill of $2 per month for sometimes up to 6months, but then you only pay for texts, calls and 5-10gb internet, and not the actual phone. This usually applies to new customers, but they typically remove your account after a month or two, so you could techincally go between 3 different companies every time you need a new deal. As long as you have the patience to either swap the number or wait for the number to transfer.
Pre-paid Verizon is $35/mo for all-you can eat data (first 15GB at 5G speeds, rest at 4G), voice and text. I have a grandfathered plan (5GB data at 5G speeds) and I pay $26.56 w/ tax.
I really need to up my spreadsheet game, wanted to do budget like that for a long time. Your calculations regarding burn-rate and the date funding runs out is really great, I think everyone should do that, gamedev or not. Congrats on your success, it all sounds like a great plan and mindset!
You're a natural and come across well on video man, your podcast is very good too, so I can see your numbers on here and twitch continuing to head in the right direction. Would love to see you interview other devs in similar situations and those getting started.
I appreciate you and your UA-cam channel. I hope those blue and green lines cross soon!!!! And I think running a lean studio with reasonable expectations is fantastic. People tend to take one success and then get over ambitious, leading to cutbacks down the road.
I found this channel yesterday while searching for some stuff for my first *not small* game. I'm doing it for my undergraduate thesis and it has been quite a ride! Love the channel, love the vibe, so glad that I found you talking about your work, congrats!!
Love this content. Great to see the financial details on someone getting started as a full time solo indie game dev. After retiring early as a software dev five years ago and just chillin and traveling full time the past five years, I finally decided to jump into learning game dev with Godot a week ago (after wanting to the past five years but being too lazy in retirement to actually get into it haha) so I can do something fun with my life and try to build a business instead of just relaxing for a bunch of decades. Anyway, so I like seeing the details of someone who is doing this and is a bit ahead of me. Impressive revenue for your first game! And Hexagod looks real cool, I would try out the demo if it was available for Mac. Also spreadsheets are crucial! I budget everything with an in-detail spreadsheet, hopefully I'll eventually be adding game income to my spreadsheets too!
Right? My logic was that I'll never get to see it on that big of a screen with all those speakers. Well worth the money and I hope they re-release in IMAX someday.
Great to see that you're doing well! It's been real fun watching these videos as I get further into the development of my own game, and I hope you can keep making yours for as long as possible!
YT algo decided to show this to me. Had seen hexagod in a video from one of the reviewers i follow, but i just wishlisted :) Good luck on your endeavors! I'll be following along!
Awesome video! I am pursuing the same goal as you, I'm just much further behind. 🤣 It's great to see you on track do be sustainable! Good job and keep up the hard work!
wow, monthly costs are very high ! 2100 $ for mortgage ? and 75$ on internet ? In Romania internet is about 8 $. Car insurance is about 300 $ per year ! And so on...
Sony EZ-V10 with the stock lens. I want to upgrade the lens, but as you saw in the video it's not really in the budget right now. Here's a link: electronics.sony.com/imaging/interchangeable-lens-cameras/aps-c/p/ilczve10-b
I'm wondering how big the difference between mobile stores and steam would be. The mobile market looks more profitable, but for sure it requires a different kind of games that PC games
TBH, I've never even considered trying to make money for mobile games. I don't play them myself so I don't think I have a good sense of what makes a good one vs a bad one. Plus the mobile monetization feels scummy at best.
You realize that if you had taken that $45,000 and invested into a dividend producing stock or ETF (that paid a dividend of 4.5% - 5.5% per year) you would have made the exact same amount of income with none of the time or energy wasted and stress levels. Game development seems to be a good waste of overall money and good waste of time and energy.
Dude, you seriously don't get it. It's not just about the fact to have money. It is about that you actually make a living out of indie development, accomplish THE dream while being able to live a normal life.

It's awesome to see real numbers and watch you run your studio responsibly!
Slow growth over get-rich-quick 💪

These kinds of videos are such a valuable resource! Very much appriciated!! Good luck on your journey, sounds like you're on an exciting track 💪💪
Appreciate the transparency! Awesome to see your progress 🙌
Love the transparency and admire your bravery and ambition to make a go at full time indie developer without a large stockpile of savings.
Great to see those numbers go up. Hexagod is looking great, excited for the release.
Cheers! Hope you are doing well congrats on getting a game out there for GMTK.
@@Aarimous Thanks, much appreciated! I am doing well. I'll try to drop into some streams if I manage to scrap together some free time.
Thanks for sharing. It's really interesting to see how you're fairing after 6 months and I hope you're able to make it work!

That is for two phones (mine and my partners). Part of her rent is to pay for her phone.10 euros is awesome!

Thanks for the candid transparency! Very insightful. Dune 2 was a movie that deserved multiple views in the theater :)

An interesting watch. Gave me some encouragement for my own plans.
Good luck and look forward to seeing you make it.

Appreciate the transparency. You're on your way to greatness! Keep it up.
These types of updates are some of my favorites that dev youtubers do, so thanks for sharing!
Cheers!
So good to see you're doing well.

Love the breakdown and I really enjoyed Hexagods!
Yep, I'm here for it!
You got my like + sub! Well explained and I saw excel tables😂
I need spreadsheet like this for my shenanigans!
Man I really need to learn google sheets, keeping the funding and cost math in my head is not the way.
really useful, thanks!
Great game
30 minutes of gameplay with just 1.5MB
I came for the spreadsheets.😄

If you don't primarily live on indie development like a true artist, then what's the point? Why take casual when you can go on hardcore?
Average Finance Bro, everyone of you guys is a waste of space
