You know there was a point in time when the name “Square soft” carried a lot of weight to it. Sure nowadays we associate these guys with long development cycles, NFTs, and publishing a lot of bad games. And I mean some real bad games, like major stinkers here. Not you though, you’re pretty good. Which is funny because back in the day these guys were industry juggernauts. The Final Fantasy series is iconic and it was their contribution to the RPG genre that solidified them as a legendary developer. However, in the stone ages, this genre was a little on the niche side. Sure japan was eating good with a seemingly never-ending series of releases, but over here in the West, our options were limited, to say the least. But that all changed back in 1997 when a little indie gem was released for the PlayStation. You probably never heard of it.
Oh would you look at that, it seems as though the industry changed overnight. Playing through this game felt like a blockbuster. The hardware of the PlayStation was pushed to its limits. Sure it looks pretty dated now, but back then, you weren’t finding anything else on this level. Final Fantasy 7’s success isn’t something to be understated. It got plenty of people back in the day to try out a genre that they otherwise would have ignored and skyrocket jrpg’s into the mainstream. But the most insane part about all of this was that Square was able to keep up with the demand. Only a year after FF7 we got Final Fantasy 8 and only one year after that we got 9 and that’s not even counting some of the spinoff games. Sure we can debate the quality of these games all we want but we have to acknowledge just how impressive it all was. Square became well known for these box office smash hits and they garnered themselves a reputation for pushing the technology to its limits while also offering good games to boot (for the most part) simply put, we were eatin' good, and with the release of the hotly anticipated PlayStation 2 on the horizon, fans were salivating to see what the next generation of final fantasy had in store for us and in 2001, we finally got to see the fruits of their labor.
Final Fantasy X 22 Years Later. Final Fantasy X is a legendary game and in this Final Fantasy X Review, Final Fantasy X Analysis, Final Fantasy X Critique, I'm going to be reviewing Final Fantasy X so we can find out Why do people love Final Fantasy X? In this Final Fantasy X Retrospective, we'll discuss Why Final Fantasy X is so loved and why people still care so much about Final Fantasy X. This Final Fantasy X Review is going to only cover the PS2 release of Final Fantasy X and not the Final Fantasy X HD Remaster. However I will talk about what is included in Final Fantasy X HD as it becomes relivant. Perhaps when I make a Final Fantasy X 2 Review I will compare Final Fantasy X vs Final Fantasy X 2 to complete my Final Fantasy X Retrospective. Does Final Fantasy X hold up in 2023? We'll find out in Why do people love Final Fantasy X? Made by Nam's Compendium.

Basically the only way to beat the blitzball story match again the Luca Goers is with the Jecht shot.
In the very short amount of time you have in the second half before Wakka comes in to replace Tidus, you have access to the Jecht shot. It is the only thing with a high enough shoot score to get past their goalie.

I really have to trust the game design on this one. My first attempts have just failed to grab me. Instead of confusion, I felt disinterested. I think that's the gamble devs face when making that decision. It's like in movie making. Some movies throw you into the deep end, so you can feel the satisfaction of learning to swim on your own.

One aspect of Wakka's backstory you missed was that when Chappu went off to join the Crusaders, he left behind the sword Wakka gifted him for his quest and tried to fight Sin with an Al Behd machina weapon instead. Yes, Wakka associates Sin with the practices of the Al Behd in general but he also saw them as having tempted Chappu as well and he's deeply afraid that Chappu died because of that transgression against Yevon.

It's kind of funny how "the laughing scene" has become a sort of benchmark for me when deciding whether to respect a persons opinion about the game since if a person says it's bad they either A) Weren't paying any attention to the story or B) Haven't actually played the game at all.

People clown on it real hard, but to this day I still think it's one of the better examples of good voice acting. The laugh scene gets memed on out of context all the time, but Tidus' inner voice being deeper because he's recollecting, Auron's masterclass and overall pretty nice cast playing around with the tension... That thing was damn good.

    • @radicalcentrist4990

The voice acting was actually fantastic when you take into consideration the fact that it's a japanese game from the early 2000's. The standard for english dubs of japanese games at that time was really bad. Western games already had good voice acting then.

I personally love ff10 because, like superbutterbuns said, "Your first final fantasy is more than likely your favorite"(All the replies are really being like "bet" lol), and 10 was mine. I'd only been a pokemon kid up till that point, and it was my first experience as a jrpg. Sure, it was mostly a linear game, and sure, the voice acting wasn't the best, but to me it was and still is amazing in so many other ways, like the God tier music(I usually get teary eyed whenever I hear To Zanarkand), the fun battle system, and the interesting levels of the sphere grid. It is in by no means a perfect game, but one of my favorite games of all time I'll always hold dear to me

People love FFX because the story and thematic elements make it, arguably, the best and most emotional JRPG story ever written. And this is coming from someone who likes X-2 better than X... X's story is just.. perfect. The duality of Tidus and Yuna, how the story of their fathers interlock into the narrative... How the end of Yuna's journey - which is supposed to end in her death and is hidden from Tidus - flips on its head to turn into the erasure of Tidus, which he hides from Yuna... All culminating in one of the very best endings of any story, not just a game story, EVER.
It's JRPG story perfection. It really is.

Seriously! The moment Yuna decides her fate, turning on Yunalesca. Destroying the one method to kill Sin in hopes of a better one. So summoners could stop sacrificing their lives in vain. Turning your back on religion to forge your own way forward....And even though she was successful, she still had to give up the person she loved for the world. Yuna has one of the best storylines in final fantasy. Ever. Amazing heroine.

I like that in their duality, the main protagonists' character arcs achieved something of a reverse flow. Tidus spent his whole life rejecting his father, and the pilgrimage ultimately brought him acceptance that allowed him to escape a potential future as Sin. Whereas Yuna spent her whole life dutifully trying to honor Braska, and it was ultimately through rejection of his path that brought about her salvation. Both followed in the footsteps of their fathers, but they each had to swap how they approached loving their fathers to break the cycle.

FFX is an incredible game in almost every way. One especially outstanding aspect is the soundtrack and world design, which are really unlike anything else I've experienced. In most games, especially modern games, you can trace back the influence easily to either real life or to popular works of fiction. Clive Rosfield and his pet frost wolf are obviously inspired by Jon Snow and his pet dire wolf. Rosaria and Sanbreque look a whole lot like medieval France. But who are Tidus and Jecht based on? What real places resemble Zanarkand or Guadosalam? Which other games involve a professional athlete going on a religious pilgrimage? These questions are hard to answer because FFX is such a complex and unique work of art. Don't get me wrong I love FFXVI too, but FFX was really doing something special.

    • @AC-nw8cq
      @AC-nw8cq 5 місяців тому +12

That's what made X special! A lot of it is influenced by Thailand/Indonesian island regions and culture. Which is rarely shown in media let alone videogames. The turn against Machina was very Dune Butlerian Jihad. But X still had a unique vision to it. X is so special in its own way.

      Jecht = Hercule Satan?
Alternately he could just be a response to complaints that FF characters are too effeminate. Everything's at least loosely based in something, but yes it definitely feels like they went the extra mile to make Spira feel like a unique living world of its own. Even the Crusader and Blitzer costumes are very distinctive. My favorite FF setting and I wish we could return to it someday.

    • @Buglin_Burger7878
      @Buglin_Burger7878 5 місяців тому +1

Jecht is anyone who is a popular father that is a jerk and Tidus is their child expected to live up to them.
Zanarkand resembles a lot of large cities with lights on all night with a large sports field and endless feeling roads.
Guadosalam is probably something from a culture we don't recognize.
As for the professional athlete pilgrimage one, it very likely has been done just again not something you or I know of.
If you sit down and seriously think you should be able to answer some of your own questions, but we don't tend to think about these things we take them at face value much like the endless cycle of sacrifices to Sin.

    • @BlackXSunlight
      @BlackXSunlight 5 місяців тому +5

Tidus technically is based off Susano’o. Think the myth of the sun god being dispelled from Heaven (Zanarkand) and he goes on a quest in the mortal realm where he’s humbled, defeats a terrible sea monster god called Orochi (Sin), and once redeemed, returns to Heaven.
The difference is the character is written with so much care, he becomes detached from the original inspiration, and everything else you mentioned about the world is spot-on. It’s not a copy-paste of real-world towns and neighborhoods, and choosing a combo Okinawa, Tibet, and Indonesia as inspirations (plus PI cultures) makes it stand out amongst med-Euro fantasy clones. And the layers!! This story has one of the best iterations of the “Evil Church” trope, the characters all act and talk in a way that shows us the world they live in, ugh. I could go on.

Personal favorite detail whenever I go back are those scenes of Tidus remarking how Yuna can "come back later to enjoy these sights again", followed by silence. It hits so differently on replay.
At first, it seems like a peaceful, introspective moment to linger on. But on rewatch, it feels foreboding. The silence in those scenes turns awkward and heavy with tension as you realize that not only is Tidus wrong, but nobody wants to correct him and talk about why.
There's no other story that stabs you in the heart quite as much as FF10 does on replay.

The directing of the scenes can be weird sometimes but in this scene, it was a masterpiece. No music, small talks, the build up goes until Rikku says"Yunie will die you know?" and then Revealed truth plays... Everyone repressed emotions about Yuna's death burst out, the reality of the situation cannot be hidden anymore and every facade is dropped. That scene is so beautiful.

Final Fantasy X was my first game ever; not just RPG or turn-based. Ever. For that reason alone, it is a very special game to me. I was twelve at the time, and the instruction on how to judge the strengths and weaknesses of enemies, what buttons to push, agility vs. strength...all that stuff was the first I'd ever considered any of those mechanics, and so the tutorial phase was so very valuable and necessary for me at that time. Now, when I replay it, it's a very long, annoying process, but I think the devs were aware that, at the time, a lot of people would be playing this for the first time. The surface-level story is innocent enough that a fairy-tale has the same level of maturity needed to understand the basic pieces, which means that, even with the M rating, plenty of children would have been able to play the game, meaning that the explanation would have been necessary.
Now that I'm older, I understand a lot more about the themes in the story. One point that you made that I'd like to contend with is that Seymour is "much like any other villain". The story doesn't do a very good job of highlighting it, I think, because they made him too creepy and focused on that aspect, but Tidus and Seymour are very similar as well; not only did his mother become a fayth; she was to be his final aeon, but I think something went wrong, since you can summon her as Anima. (It's not really explained, that aspect) But also, he had a whole heap of expectations laid on him as just a child as well.
As the child of both human and Guado parents, he was lifted as a symbol; the one child who would forge a new peace between the two races. His mother, when she sacrificed herself for Seymour when he was only a child, reinforced the message to him. He was crying to her, begging her not to do it, and she told him how important he was, and that her sacrifice as his final aeon would bring the two peoples together. And, being only a child, of course he failed. The guilt and grief brought him back as a fiend, and twisted his mind.
It's easy to miss, because of the marriage plot and stuff, but there is a lot of character development for Seymour in there.
Thanks for the video. I am so excited to see love being given to this game, even so long after its release.

    • @dirrdevil

Any summoner can summon any aeon if they make a deal with the respective Fayth. The aeon is just a form the fayth (basically, a real person's soul trapped in a statue) takes on.
Yuna meets the Anima Fayth (Seymour's mother) and she agrees to help Yuna defeat Seymour. There is even a bonus scene if Yuna summons Anima in her final fight against Seymour. Seymour feels betrayed and he should: his own mother is fighting to stop him.

I've been hitting my second playthrough of Bauldar's Gate 3 hard recently. And I kept finding it fascinating that the devs of that game were able to have the story continually move forward, both narratively and physically in the game world, without leaving major characters behind. They always found reason why those major characters are moving with the player and still present.
Then I find this video and remember my hundreds of hours in ffx and realize Square managed to do it decades ago lol

It gets taken out of context a lot for the memes. But the laugh WAS meant to be goofy, awkward, and embarassing. Clips don't usually include the part where bystanders start looking at them and Yuna's like "bro, stop."
But shortly after she's like: "yknow what? screw it!" then she starts doing the laugh with Tidus
They look at each other... and actually start laughing at themselves. 😂
Its a sweet coming of age moment for two young adults whose had to deal with people's expectations their entire lives because of their parents' legacies.

The ambience, setting and atmosphere of 10 is top tier. Its contradictory in the best of ways and every element of the game seems to play off eachother splendidly. The tropical setting and fun characters almost make it seem like a silly, happy go lucky romp but then the melancholic soundtrack kicks in or the group comes across some devastation caused by sin or the usually silly conversations turn to discussions over yunas potential fate should she defeat sin. Its bittersweet all the way through and even more so on replays when you already know how it ends.
Imo 10 is a masterpiece sans the voice acting but tbh even thats not that bad. Even the infamous tidus laugh works for the seen its in as hes intentionally being loud and silly to cheer up yuna. Its honestly a very heart warming scene that showcases his fun, corny, and kind personality beneath the scars left behind by his father.
Hope that wasnt too long winded for people to read. Lol.

FFX is my first Final Fantasy game played and beaten all the way through. Overall liked it the first time, but had some aspects I didn't like. Although after doing a second playthrough, I grew to love it, including Tidus more (who I kinda didn't like at first) which helped make me feel how strong his relationship is with Yuna. And while the combat is overall simple, there's still a lot of challenge. While I did get all aeons, I only got like half of the ultimate weapons though. But the one thing I definitely loved both first and second playthrough is the themes of faith and rebellion. To be able to question what you're being taught, and be able to stand up against authority for a better future. Personally I loved FFXV more for the emotional bonds between the main characters, the exploration, and themes it tackles, even if its story is not at its best. But FFX is definitely a great game and a good starting point! Only beaten X and XV, and played some but not all of VII and I.

I love your defence of Tidas but as an older Millennial (I am 35), what you said about FFX being treated as "Kiddy Shit" is wrong. That attitude towards video games really changed in the 90's, in part because of FF7. The marketing around FFX was massive when I was a kid and the game was heaped with praise, there was also a dedicated teenage fanbase of this game and this world. FF was taken seriously because it was seen as the "Art-form" of video games, especially 7, 8, 9 and 10. They were all marketed hard and deserved all the praise they got.
I read the themes of this game differently. I think for Square, this game was very much about the legacy of FF7 and the pressure on Square to produce a game with that same "Lightening in a Bottle". In a way, Square was very much both Tidas and Jetch. They had succeeded in making video games mainstream with FF7's MASSIVE success (and it really was massive, I had never seen a video game commercial before FF7 and the Playstation era) and for a lot of people at Square, that legacy was really crushing to live up to, they were expected to make masterpieces. Square also took on new staff at the time, as this was the beginning of Squaresoft turning into Square Enix and I imagine the people coming on must have felt like Tidas, coming to this company that made FF7, the pressure for this game to be great must had been hard on the Dev Team.
Remember both 8 and 9 (although 9 is a masterpiece and my personal favourite game in the series) both under performed compared to 7.
Thats what I read into it, its about the legacy of 7 and the effect it had on the company as a whole, both for new staff (Tidas) and old staff (Jetch).

Winning the one story match of Blitzball is optional, possible, but difficult. You can learn Jecht Shot before Luca.
Your strategy is to score once in the 1st half and go for broke with Tidus, use the Jecht Shot.
The 2nd half with Wakka is more on defense. Get the ball and pass to your own players over and over to waste time. Don't pass if they are too far to make the throw. Don't pass if they're near enemy players. But do medium-long passes to open teammates to run down the clock.
Score 1 or 2 points and then don't play fair. Don't give the Goers a ball and run down the clock. It may take dozens of retries and you can't easily skip all the cutscenes leading up to it.

Not only is Tidus young, but he is also something of a spoiled nepo baby. There are real life celebrities in our world that are twice or three times his age and just as immature as early game Tidus. Like Zidane before him, he ends the game in a much more mature, selfless, likable person. This should inspire all of us to grow ourselves daily, rather than grow too comfortable with our own immaturity.

    Combat is so awesome
    Story and pacing is amazing
    World design is amazing
    This game is…..it.
College is busy so it takes me a while to play but I spend so much time thinking about what I may do next, what I want my stats to be
Real quick about combat: 1. Valefor has been the clutch summon, she always dodges when needed and Energy Ray is great because non elemental
    2. So I think I may be a big under leveled(?) because I play in a region/stage, do to the next and immediately the enemies just smoke my party!
This forest area is really hard and I used so many healing items. But. I really like that the combat is hard sometimes(not sure if that is intentional design so if anyone is reading, give me your thoughts)
To Nam if you are reading this: I like your videos a lot.
When I finish FFX, I will be back to this video to hear your thoughts, which I imagine will be pretty fun and cool.
To everyone else: what FF game should I play after FFX?
I have been thinking bout FF1 and FF8 as a potential next game.
Honestly both games for no reason😅
FF1 is the beginning and FF8 seems cool(also seems to have good blue magic and I find blue magic awesome)

I honestly think FFX is just the perfect JRPG, like it just nails everything that a JRPG is supposed to do right, and exceeds it as well. Stunning graphics even to this day, with locations that feel so alive and real. Even though the game is from 2001, you can still feel the vibes of places like Besaid, Luca, and other places. Spira is such a cool place generally, and is one filled with tons of things. It has an emotional and satisfying story that feels like an adventure to go on. Characters which all have motivations of their own and are unique and well-designed in their own way, and turn-based gameplay that is perfected. There are some rough parts with the dub sure, some of the minigames can be obnoxious, and the cloister of trials leave a lot to be desired, but it just exceeds in every other category that you just can't resist calling it perfect.

It was the most real of the final fantasy series games. There was such an underlying dark truth to the game. You play as Tidus, and you are doing your best to help the protagonist get to where she needs to go. But in the process you don't really know what the end result is supposed to be until you get right outside the ruins and then you find out. It's a gut punch. It's a real hard gut punch. It's like knowing your best friend has cancer and you can't really do anything about it except love them. Final fantasy seven was my first no I take that back. Actually, final fantasy 3 was my first but I didn't understand it at the time but the final fantasy 7 was my first. Then I played eight and nine but 10 is the one that stuck with me all these years just because of how emotional it is.

My own mother was abusive, and while my dad isn't a bad guy we have a hard time connecting as he is of the typical boomer mentality of "Welp, the kid's not dead so I guess I have done my parental duty." I definitely agree that they don't make them like they used to, and 16 had a ton of problems with it, but I'm in more of a "be happy that it happened" kinda stage rather than sad its over. The new games in my opinion have their own unique fun charm to them that I cherish as well, and I'm sure some 10-12 year old out there will play a part of the ff7 remake series and love it as much as I do ff10. I can say this though, I have never been more excited for the release of a game than I am currently for ff7 rebirth. As games evolve, my taste and judgement evolves too, and I give every game a fair chance no matter which generation it's released in. This game man, it's something special. A little, perhaps a bit out of place praise, but it does have my favorite Yoshitaka Amano piece, which is the game's main logo. The logo portrays Yuna doing the Sending in Kilika Port after the village is attacked and devastated by Sin. This is what happens in FFX when innocent bystanders are killed by Sin, the game's monstrous antagonist. The soul refuses to go to the Farplane (a kind of limbo) and a summoner must do the Sending, a ceremony that guides the spirits of the dead through a ritual dance. It's one of my favorite scenes in the series, it's simply breathtaking.
The water aesthetic combined with a pervasive sense of mysticism helps set up a world that feels alien but real so, so well. I don't think I've ever seen an early scene in a game that drew me in as much as Yuna performing the Sending at Kilika. Every step of the game is permeated by this feeling of wonder that still somehow feels so grounded and real. Like Spira is such a different place, and yet I could step into it tomorrow if I had the chance. I could go on for how well-made and thought out this game was, how instead of looking over at other fantastic RPGs, they stuck to their own way and feel, but man, what a perfect send off to the golden age of the franchise, it's the last Final Fantasy that was turn-based, and the last to continue on representing why this series is legendary in the first place.
I immensely enjoyed Final Fantasy XVI, the first I've enjoyed a FF since FFX, but I can't lie that the game felt like it had to chase those huge trends to keep up, not stepping back and realizing what made it so iconic in the first place.

I still dont know who the fuck Teedus is...weird ive looked at the main characters name a lot... Ive never seen it spelled with 2 E's or a long E...How do Titus make "Teedus" just curious...game makers should have learned English before just making up words. That is all.

The creators made it with the video's pronunciation in mind. It means sun while Yuna means moon... But both pronunciations have meaning. Maybe you should learn Japanese before playing a jrpg.

Because it was the last True final fantasy game. Going away from turn based was a mistake. The games arent the same, they might as well have just made a new series if they were going to change the core gameplay.

The tutorials at the beginning serve to show the player that this game has a rock paper scissor type of tactical aspect. It just wants to show you that you're going to see enemy archetypes and which characters counter them. I kind of enjoy the process even after countless playthroughs.

I love your video and couldn'y agree more. You nailed all my thoughts for the most part.
I love the Cloister of Trials except the Zanarkand one for the exact reasons yourl describe: just repetitive busywork.
The Monster Arena is insanely grindy from collection to maxing perfect stats and custom armor and beating ALL the bosses. Very satisfying feeling to beat, but only for completionists.
I clear all the +1, +2, +3 stat nodes late game and replace them with +4 counterparts (and do the equivalent to HP/MP nodes), fill in all the blank nodes, and add enough Luck Nodes, then grind out all the activation spheres needed so all 7 characters activate a perfect grid to ensure they have 255 in all stats.

Neat video on my favorite game of all time! I don't agree with every point made (Yuna isn't passive but instead self-sacrificing which matters as it informs us of why she became a summoner [it wasn't foisted upon her an din fact her father and friends didn't want her to become one since they knew what it would require of her and is a great example of why she isn't actually passive], FF after X is still great even if it's different experiences since that's a part of the FF identity [constant change] to me) but overall I think you captured why the game is so beloved. It's written with plenty of nuance, interesting characters that subvert expectations while fulfilling others, a beautiful world with rich lore and a story that includes the best romance in FF history both in terms of writing and progression as well as its relevance and integration with the plot. Plus it's just a fun game to tinker with and play without being overly difficult unless you want it to be. I really don't know what more someone could want from a JRPG that FFX doesn't deliver on.

I'm personally a fan of having kimahri learn tiduses haste and quick hit skills so between tidus and kimahri and later auron since he can get it quickly after finishing his own grid you can use hastega and stunlock basically every boss into dying without ever getting a turn lol

International Edition Tip: USE A GUIDE. Dark Aeons spawn and basically create obstacles in routine places and are super difficult to beat until heavily invested in the post-game content (you can start the Monster Arena earlier, but your progress there will be more limited until the full exploration vis airship is avaible).
Dark Valefor will block Besaid, so get everything there.
Dark Bahamut guards Yunalesca's room on return, so get the Sun Crest for Tidus on your 1st visit or Tidus's ultimate weapon, Caladbolg, will be locked until you can defeat him.
Dark Magus Sisters on Mushroom Rock Road and Dark Yojimbo in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth can wreck you, but you can escape them.
Dark Shiva blocks Macalania Temple, so complete your Cloister of Trials optional reward on your 1st visit.
From what I recall, Dark Ifrit and Dark Ixion are out of the way and won't be obstacles like the rest.
The Dark Aeon bosses are not that difficult for a post-game party that can deal with Monster Arena bosses, but will wipe any casual player without significant upgrades from a modified sphere grid.

I am currently replaying FFX and I think one of the reasons I like it is that I was drawn to the idea of the "Epic Journey" and to me the world of Spira is one of the most fascinating fantasy worlds I've seen in any medium. It is kind of high fantasy, post apocalyptic, steam punk (ether punk), sci fi all rolled into one. You see remnants of great civilizations everywhere you go on your journey that makes the world feel lived in. And the way that the story progresses makes you feel like you are just witnessing a moment in time, and that there could potentially have been whole games taking place within the world of Spira alone.
The Summoners quest is also just a really good way to get a newbie into the franchise. I don't play many JRPGs and having the narrative be easily approachable, as in "We are going on this journey in order to beat the evil monster" is something anyone can get into. And once you're on board you get all these other elements that only enhances the experience.
Also. Auron might be the coolest character Square has ever made. I literally can't go through the game without having him present in like 90% of the fights.

OMG this reminds me of my best days...Imagine doing Lulu's 200 lightning dodges. First I had to bring my ps2 inside my room. Second, turned off everything that emits light other than the screen. Three crank the volume up to the highest level. Fourth made sure that my hand was dry. Fifth a heart attack medicine, almost took it lolz, the racing heartbeat that almost gives me a heart attack from 150+. Last and most important I had to inform everyone not to bother me and put a " DO NOT DISTURB" sign on my door just to be sure.

I love the sphere grid, but I always found that I would lose patience in late game as you start getting locked behind finding certain more rare spheres. I remember needing a specific one for Yuna to get one of her really strong spells and having a lot of issues getting one as a drop even though I was grinding enemies that were supposed to drop them. She got stuck there for a really long time since I didn't want to have to work her all the way back to grab it later.
Also yes- the first match against the Luca Goers is really hard- it's impossible without the Jecht Shot, so if you don't grab that on your first boat trip you can't win. After the first time I played the Goers (and lost) I restarted and made sure Tidus learned the shot then won fairly handily my next go.

did a platinum run of this game again recently after like 10 years, read about that kimari rush steal and holy strat, so I farmed the opening sin scales for a few hours and did that fast and he was pretty badass. I used him all the way till the endgame stat maxing phase when I swapped him for riku's mix which had some niche uses I could have stuck with him as a main.

This game used to get a lot of hate. But over the years it's proved to be a fan favorite and I am definitely one of those fans. The characters and story made this game so incredible. Even though it was over 20 years ago, i still remember being on that journey for the first time. Watching Yuna and Tidus fall in love and then finding out that hard decisions needed to be made. It's not just a masterpiece of gameplay design and character design, but also of story design. It has arguably the greatest mini game ever in Blitzball. And we cannot forget how cutting edge some of cutscenes were. They still look fantastic today. Iirc the game was crapped on mostly by people who loved FF7. But over the years as thise people actually decided to play the game, they've mostly realized why FFX is such a gem. Inshould also mention thay inam one of those people who okayed the crapmout of FFX-2 as well lol. It's not freat, but the gameplay is. Dress spheres are incredible.

FFX was my introduction to JRPG's. I haven't played many of them, actually, but it opened my mind to party-turn-based games. I played the demo and I was like 'wtf is this', then later on I rented the game. The story gripped more than I could've anticipated, and so did the blitzball minigame. Great game; deep characters and story, and very visually pleasing worldbuilding. Gotta replay it sometime.

I think my quit moment in this game started when I couldn't figure out how to do anything in the blitzball QTE sequence as a kid, but culminated when I found out literally hours down the line I'd missed a single Al Bhed Primer on the ship by just accidentally talking to an NPC once. If not for that stuff, I might have ended up really loving this game early on. And then promptly ragequit after finding out the lightning minigame existed.
