Got my hammock and tarp 2 days ago. Tested it yesterday and found out I need another system to hang it. Saw this and immediately bought the twisted shackles and also got few meters of band used to make the treehuggers from and will ask someone to sow them like you did. Think I'll order the whoopie slings online. Maybe I'll use a carabiner instead of a stick. Fell from the hammock on my balcony few days ago as the old rugged rope snapped. 😂 Great video! Thanks!
I've just fitted whoopie slings to my travel/bivi hammock. So quick and easy to adjust its not funny. Totally recommend them.

Thanks Simon for your ideas ... I'm in the military and practice Bushcraft since years but unfortunately not every weekend ... You and Mike ( MCQ Bushcraft) inspired me a lot with simple skills and equipment in a world of 'Glamour Camping" and high sophisticated bushcrafting or Walden (German slang). Simple wilderness lifestyle, cooking and outdoor pleasure is the goal and not paying thousands and thousands of Euros only to sleep outside. Hi Simon, I have a whole bag full of Hammock suspensions, from tree huggers, binas, loopaliens, slings, whooping slings to plain old rope.
I think the best bit about hammock camping is playing and changing it up.
The only thing that stays the same is my tarp ridge line, as I want that up quick in all weather conditions, pouring with rain or hot sunshine.

Another Thumbs up from me. Having watched this, I had already ordered my DD mc Tarp 4x4 and DD Travel Hammock, incase I want to use it on the ground. Just made my own whoopie slings using 4mm Deema low stretch rope with 2400+ kg braking strain, just waiting for other bits n bobs to land, then off for my first ever night in a Tarp. Also got a down pattern 58 sleeping bag as noted your comments about the DD one in your other video. Atb Michael

My thought on the standard tape suspension that came with my DD TravelBivi was that it would allow water to run down to the hammock if it rained (and I'd basically need drip lines on each length of tape) so I replaced it with continuous loops and used carabiners as drip rings.
Hadn't thought of turning the DD suspension into DIY tree-huggers, that's bloody awesome!
I swear by whoopie slings and by Amsteel/Dyneema in general. Those twisted shackles look like a great idea - my carabiners often turn side on and I'm worried that there won't be any low point from which the water can drip.

Thank you for this, Simon - just (re)viewing after being lucky enough to get myself a TW Hammock - there are lots of videos out there on whoopie slings, amsteel, continuous loops, different suspension systems and so on, but few of them match the quality and nature of your content. So, good job!
Knowing that you (seem to) continuously improve your gear and systems, I wouldn't be averse to seeing a 'revisit' of your Hammock hanging/suspension system set-up. ((o;

Really well explained set ups too : ) I started with the first one, just the plain webbing, then i'm currently using something very similar to your second set up, my hammock was kindly modded by Paul 'Prepped Nomad'
I do have the whoopie slings but have never used them so certainly something to look into in the future.

Thanks for the supportive comments Jay and thanks for the Sub!! The whoopee slings are great for ease of adjustment and size/weight. If you do use them however, just one thing to be careful of (and I speak from experience, as I did exactly this!) don't pull the adjusting 'end' tightly to the end (making it the sling the shortest it can be be) it is a complete bugger to then try to loosen off again as you have no slack loop to release the grip. If that makes any sense!! Good luck with them mate! Cheers, Simon.

a bit heavier ,a lot stronger . after hitting the ground lol.

Simon, when you hang a tarp above the hammock, what lengths of paracord do you use for the guy lines and ridge cord? Taking 25m of paracord along seems a bit of an overkill, what’s your setup?

Great video Simon. I just found out the hard way how heavy rain can get past simple string drippers on the basic DD tarp suspension. I like those twisted shackles. Have they ever failed you and any idea where to buy them? Thanks for filming, Andy
Was just looking myself and found these www.s3i.co.uk/twist-shackle.php if you have a marine Chandler’s near you they may have some.

Great tips, hoping that the s/s twisted D shackles work. I have a DD Travel Hammock, DD 4x4 camo tarp. Made my own deeneema whoopi slings. as I now have the twisted shackles. NOT used any yet as still trying to stitch my Swedish pouches to my LK35. Got an ex mil down bag, so nearly ready for my first wild camp ;-)
+Michael - Thanks Michael. You'll have no troubles with the shackles, they work a treat! Are you hand stitching the pouches on? They are fiddly to do aren't they! I like the idea of the 4x4 tarp, the 3x3 is plenty big enough, but a bigger working area is always nice! Good luck with getting everything ready and good luck for the wild camp! Once you've been once, you'll be looking for any opportunity to get out - I know I do - my wife despairs! Lol!! Atb, Simon.

Simon, well that went well. Broke two needles sewing on the pouches with waxed cord. Got both pouches on. Too bloody high, the lid fouled on them. So had to unpick them both, now loads of holes. If I had brains I'd be deadly 👎🏻
Michael - Oh man!! You must have been gutted when you realised!! At least some of the holes will be covered when you move them down!! You could try some seam sealer on the holes to reproof them, or the lid might cover them when it's closed? Hope it comes out better second time! I feel your pain!!
Hi love all your vids,im going to try hammock camping just setting up for reducing weight,silly question but the caribiners ive just bought are 24g each and just wanted to know if those shackles are lighter....now that spent money and just seen your great vid ha ha.
Thanks Peter, I’m not sure what the shackles weigh to be honest, I’ve since swapped them out for stainless steel drip rings for a bit more weight saving - your carabiners sound pretty light though! 👍

Hey Simon, I use whoopie slings/tree huggers as well. However instead of using a stick as a toggle I lark’s head the fixed loop to the tree hugger loop, and then just push the lark’s head up to make a quasi-square knot. Then connect the whoopie to the hammock. So far it hasn’t caused any issues and removes one more component from my suspension.
What size is yours shackle?
It measures about 20mm across the pin and is roughly 25mm long. 👍
