- Here's Marty singing a medley of two Hank Williams and Eddy Arnold songs from the 60's. Marty soon replaced the late Hank Williams as the darling of the Opry audiences and stayed with the American institution for 30 years.
If you were lucky enough to be a member of the audience when Marty was on the show you would invariably get your money's worth because he would often go over time, but he didn't care; he would just move the hands of the clock on the stage back and carry on doing what he did best, singing and entertaining.

HE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE ONE OF THE MOST GLORIOUS VOICES OF ALL TIME.
WHAT A LOSS BUT HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN BY ALL OF HIS FANS
I saw him headline the Grand Old Opry show for Fan Fare 1981, he came on about 9.30pm and we let him off the stage about 2 a.m.
A fantastic performer, it was worth the trip just for him.
In 1969 I had saved up money enough to take a trip to Nashville and was there in late June. The first night I was in town I met Grant Turner and got to go backstage at the Ryman. Later a guy took me out to Ralph Emery's radio show. It was a magical night. On Saturday night I got a close up seat and saw the whole show including the last spot by Marty. He set the clock back several times and did one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life. I should never have left Nashville again.
They do not come any better than this. Marty is The Entertainer Of The Century.

Thanks kuzztau. I first heard this medley around 1964 thanks to AFN (American Forces Network) from Germany. I had my old Grundig reel to reel recorder ready and I kept my fingers crossed that the reception wouldn't fade. I still have this on my old tapes, but you are hearing this thanks to Tom Barton in Texas who was kind enough to send me this copy.
I've loved Marty's voice since first hearing songs like Castles In The Sky,Love Me Or Leave Me Alone,way back early 50s, none better
Man yer old, I´m ´57.
Marty was my late father's idol, he saw him perform often and met him a few times, "Bouquet of Roses" was his favourite. I now own all the old man's records.
Sadly Katz died a few years back.
I would date this medley as around 1964/65 and it is definitely Bill Johnson on steel.
To this day it still puzzles me how Marty never recorded Bill's now classic Country ballad 'A Wound Time Can't Erase.' Funnily enough, Marty did write a song in 1968 called 'A Heal That Time Will Wound' which I have by Wes Buchanan on the Columbia label produced by Marty.

(Feb. 14, 2004) - The Associated Press reports that Katz Kobayashi - former steel guitar player for Marty Robbins, Bill Anderson, Johnny Russell, Jeanne Pruett, Alan Jackson and other Grand Ole Opry stars - died at his home in Panama City Beach, Fla., on Feb. 8 of complications from a stroke. In the early 1990s, he performed on the Carolina Opry in Myrtle Beach, S.C. A native of Japan, Kobayashi was 60 at the time of his death.

Amazing when you think that a native of Japan could play the steel guitar well enough to play for Marty. He was one of the best without doubt. I remember a BBC show Katz played 'Steel Guitar Rag' and the presenter commented on his brilliance on the instrument. Quick as a flash Marty said "I Know, I Taught him!"

I love this guy I once talked to hi on phone but did not know who was talking to me he asked gif s date I could kick myself for saying no. What a great talent ! He wrote beautiful songs snd was a good sweet man.
Marty Robbins admired Hank Wiliams very much. Someone would have to be a fool not to recognize his genius. He also was a big fan of Eddy Arnold, Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Little Jimmy Dickens and George Morgan. I almost forgot to mention Gene Autry & the Sons Of The Pioneers.
I believe the steelguitist is James Farmer. Farmer had his own style and was influenced by Shot Jackson. My favorite Marty Robbins recordings were the ones before the Gun Fighter recordings. Those early recordings featured James Farmer on steel. I got hooked on Farmer and Wiggins when was 9 years old. I've never seen a picture of Farmer.
I think Marty knew Eddy Arnold's entire catalogue. I really appreciate the way he always sang them in the original Eddy Arnold style. Except on "I walk alone" where he did it even better than the original.
And @ 3:00 he tells Marty "You're killing me!" You can actually hear Robbins smile at the remark.

always makes me cry.
If you listen at 1:14 you can hear the bandleader calling a key change to the band and again at 2:25. A couple guys missed that one for a couple beats. This was probably done with little or no rehearsal. That was pretty typical of Marty from what I've heard from guys who worked around him. He expected you to be able to pick if you were going to be on stage with him and would just take off and sing and figure you would catch up if you got lost. "Turn it around @ 3:37."
