Stargate SG-1 has over 200 episodes but it's absolutely brilliant. Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'niell and Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson have just some of the best chemistry on television and the show delivers with both sci-fi action and a hefty dose of laughs.

"So this guy created Earth, they're saying?" Not quite. He _discovered_ Earth and its humans and found out that his technology could repair human bodies quite easily, so he transferred his dying self into a human body to become effectively immortal. He then ruled over the Egyptians, and he kidnapped a bunch of them and brought them to this new planet to mine its ore for him -- but when he was away, the Earth humans rebelled and made their gate inoperable, which prevented him from being able to return to Earth.
The thing that made Stargate SG-1 so unique is that it was us, present day humans from the 1990s, going up against Aliens. There weren't any spaceships (at first). There was just the Stargate, which allowed us to go anywhere, basically. The show had to change some things from the movie, to make it all work, but I prefer what the show did. If you start watching SG-1, while also watching TNG, then I think I just died and went to Heaven.
One thing hat Gene Roddenberry did with Star Trek TOS, was create the 'transporter'. Mainly as a story device to move the story along faster, as he didn't want time taken up on ships and shuttlecrafts/shuttlepods getting to their destinations. As Trek's TOS often started the episode with the Enterprise getting to the destination at the outset, it got into the story faster. They took Emmerich's idea and used it much like the ships and transporter, all rolled into one. And got us into the stories quicker.
Problem....while TNG episodes where mostly standalone, we can trim 20 episodes a season down to just 4-5 for Cassie to get the highlights, I think that's more difficult in SG1. While it's not strictly a continuous story, there are so many connecting threads that all advance together. I mean Season 1....1-3 are practically a single extended pilot...8 you meet the Nox...10 the Unas and tease Thor...11 Reconnects with catherine and defines the 4 races....12 Teal'c's Son and Master Bra'tac...14 HATHOR! 15 introduces Cassandra (okay...we have to trim, so maybe we skip 14 and 15) ....16 Teal'c gets more character growth in one episode than some characters will see in a season! This is the equivalent of Tasha's death! ...17 meet the Tollan, relevant for many seasons....surely we can skip18..no it introduces the 2nd Stargate...19..the robot doubles only ever come up once, I guess we can skip it., (but it's sooo good!)...20-22....practically an extended season finale...okay...21-22 then. Hell if we trim with a chainsaw...1,2, 8, 11, 12, 16!!!, 17, 21,22. I don't think you can cut it down further without leaving massive lore gaps in later seasons.
I agree with the OP, I also always thought that made SG-1 very unique. The idea, which they occasionally came back to, that while everyone else has a DHD and doesn't even think how the Stargates work, our guys had to MacGuyver (haha) a way to control it with a 90s supercomputer - and ended up learning more about it in the process.
As a realist, I don't expect Cassie to watch 10 seasons of SG-1, let alone Atlantis and Universe. But I'd LOVE to see her react to at least the pilot TV episode, or Season 1.
If she were to do just the pilot for SG-1, she should try to find the "Children of the Gods: The Final Cut" version that was released on DVD in 2009. It was a special edition re-edit, remix, rescore version of the pilot that brought the quality up and made it feel more like the rest of the series. It is also more like a stand-alone sequel, since it removes 1 or 2 cliffhanger details that led into the next episode, etc.
So would I! One of those rare cases of the sequel being better than the original. This movie is great, but the end point being in a different galaxy doesn't make sense given the coordinate system, I *really* didn't like how the military team was depicted as immature idiots who apparently hadn't even considered the possibility of being stuck on an alien world, and I generally got the impression that the writers hadn't quite thought through the actual nature of the aliens.
@@brigidtheirish The nature of the aliens fluctuates a bit probably because Ra’s death with his closeup was a reshoot insert to make it clearer to audiences that he died (they originally only showed the ship blowing up). So we didn’t see him revert to his Asgard-like form originally.
Richard Dean Anderson's portrayal of the character is awesome because while he is funny and goofy the majority of the time, there are moments where he gets deadly serious and you can sense it. He's a very underrated actor.
He's a great example of the difference between playing a character as cold or emotionless (as is often done for military characters) and playing as understated or restrained. Anderson (and Russell) make it clear they have emotions but can't afford to let them interfere with their job.
At first I was put off by him replacing the dude who played the part in the movie, I didn't like it. He should have been in the movie, he was a great pick.
Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are two of my favourite TV series. They expand the Stargate lore so well and provide a rich history. I recommend it and the chemistry of the SG-1 team is so good that they make it easy to get invested in their adventures. For crying out loud - Jack O'Neill Well, I do speak 23 different languages, pick one - Daniel Jackson Indeed - Teal'c You know, you blow up one sun and suddenly everyone expects you to walk on water - Sam Carter
Great movie. Remember watching it in cinema. Someone said about it that time: Cost 50 million, looks 100 million and made 200 million in the box office. Spot on. Great movie with a great Kurt Russell. "Breakdown" is a great underrated gem of his. Or "Executive Decision".
I also remember watching in the theatres but, to be honest, I didn't think it was a great movie. Yes, it was a good entertaining movie well worth the ticket price, but to this day I don't think it's a _great_ movie.

I haven't watched the movie in ages but SG-1 and Atlantis remain at the very tippy top of my fav TV-shows of all time. I've rewatched both shows several times. They have that perfect mix of self aware silliness (not so much at the very beginning, but it grows into it) and seriousness.
I still remember, for all my absolute adoration of Macgyver and Richard Dean Anderson as a kid, hating that he got roped into what seemed like an obvious cash grab (to uninformed, young me). Then the show went to SciFi and they were running a 4-hour block of it every Monday. I *immediately* became a fan. I did and still like the movie as its own thing, or as an alternate-universe take on events.

The series of stargate SG-1 is bright light in the sci fi world. While most new sci fi are overfilled with interpersonal drama that only wears the guise of sci fi, sg-1 actually appeals to the adventure/mystery/sci fi demographic in a real sense.
Spader is such a chameleon. His roles from Lincoln, Blacklist, Pretty in Pink, Secretary, Less than Zero, and here on Stargate is so diverse. His hyper-intelligent take on Daniel Jackson made them reprise the 'character' for the series.
I remember when my wife and I were watching The Blacklist, I showed her a picture of him from an '80s movie and she refused to believe it was the same actor.
As a polyglot this movie has my absolute favorite linguistics joke of all time. When Jackson is about to tell the story about how the people became enslaved he's asked "I thought you didn't speak the language?" and he replies "Oh, it's easy once you know the vowels." Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs are only the consonants, we have no idea what the vowels are so they have to take their best guesses on what a shockingly large amount of stuff is actually saying. I can guarantee that joke goes over 99.999% of audiences heads but it still cracks me up.
As a linguist, there's also a fair bit of believable linguistics in Stargate (e.g phonological shifts from ancient languages). Someone knew their stuff in the writing team.
If 99.999% don't understand the joke, then only 1 million people on the planet would understand the joke. There are approximately a half million linguists in the world. So your estimate seems pretty close.

I've noticed a lot of movies these days when you watch them on streaming don't have subtitles when it's some sort of alien language but I remember on the DVDs or watching in the movie theaters they had a translation because it was part of the story
Ill say this. If you EVER do a full watch through of ANY Sci-Fi TV series Stargate SG-1 is IMO one of the top choices. It has one of if not the most internally consistent worlds, meaning rules they set up during season 1 still apply in season 8, and has some of the best story telling of any Sci-Fi series ever released. Now unfortunately you dont get Kurt Russell back but you do get a EXCELLENT replacement in Richard Dean Anderson, aka the OG MacGyver.

SG-1 (and its spin-offs) and Farscape, plus (though they're a different branch of sci-fi) Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Fringe, remain my four favorite sci-fi series (I'm not counting Firefly, because it was only one truncated season, which makes it a more of a mini-series, and I didn't know it existed until AFTER I saw Serenity in theater with a friend who told me about it). Don't get me wrong - there are easily dozens more shows that I love and that deserve recognition and reactions. But nothing would make me sub to a channel quicker than someone reacting to those shows!

I actually met James Spader in Richmond VA when he was filming Lincoln. It was at a rite aid and he was there with his family who was sick at the time so he didn’t want pictures or attention drawn to them, but he still talked to me and it was a positive experience, nice guy. He was not rude and took the time to say hi and explain why he needed to lay low and go.
When I was in college, a radio station had a call in question. I don't remember what it was, but I called in and answered it correctly. My prize was a DVD copy of this movie. I hadn't seen it before, but I enjoyed it very much. I was so happy when he was able to bring her back to life. "Go, Sha'uri. It's ya birthday!"
The old lady who appeared early in the film was the late Viveca Lindfors. She played Bedelia in one of the short stories in Creepshow (1982). She died in 1995 and Stargate was one of her very last films.
And GUEST starred countless Canadian actors, including quite a few who would also appear in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica mini-series and the 2004 series.

Loved this movie as a kid. I admit it was about 2 or 3 seasons into the TV series before I sat down and finally watched that. Now, the Stargate universe is one of my absolute favorites.
It cracks me up that he "corrects" synonyms too. "for all time" vs "for all eternity" is the same thing. Same with "doorway to heaven" vs "star gate". it's just synonyms, no need to act like you're correcting him, Daniel. lol.
@@RedCaio It's a word for word translation vs translating the meaning of a sentence. Both are right but one conveys the meaning better. That's why google translate was/is so bad, it does not translate the context well unless you put in a full paragraph. even then it struggles.
I was blown away by the special effects when I saw it in the cinema, that and the concept of dialling the Gate at the start. There was a narrow window when Stargate could've been made, when the special effects were good enough but people still found the concept of rotary phones natural. A great film but it spun off an even better TV series.
To be honest SG1 had a LOT more time to world build the the movie so yes it was more enjoyable because of that. The movie was a great movie with great world building for the time allowed.
@@haardo A bit morbid but if this is how O'Neil taught his son to deal with firearms there is a reason he was shot....and it is all his fault then. If you are going to keep firearms in your household you have two options. One rigorously teach and drill with all your children what to do if they encounter a firearm (namely immediately leave the room and tell an adult). Two, once old enough to have responsibility, rigorously train them on the proper handling, inspecting, clearing, making safe, and operation of said firearms. Doing anything else is irresponsible.

One of the most important movies of my childhood! My entire family has a lifelong obsession with the Stargate TV shows, and this was how it all started. I remember how excited we were when the show was announced, and we still rewatch it religiously. 😄 I highly recommend watching the show or at least the pilot movie! It's like a precursor to Star Trek where a more flawed, contemporary society takes the first steps to one day hopefully becoming something like Star Trek.

Stargate is one of my favorite universes. Just like Star Trek it's mostly really smart people cooperating well. Atlantis is probably my favorite but they are all great in their own way. I have rewatched SG-1 almost as many times as I've rewatched Buffy. Oh and yes, nearly all good TV sci-fi in the late 90s and to some extent still today was all made in Canada. Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (best TV show ever made), The Expanse, The Travelers, personal favorite Van Helsing and countless more. All having Canadian actors and guest stars that you would probably recognize even more than me.
I agree that both TNG and SG-1 are "really smart people cooperating well" with no made-up unnecessary disagreement or stupidity. You can believe they're solving real problems and it feels satisfying when they do, mostly without deus ex machina.

Saw Star Wars many times in the theater in ‘77, have all the OG toys. Grew up on with TOS on tv in reruns, watched TNG and am a die hard Voyager & Enterprise fan. But even with all that, Stargate is my favorite and my happy place, especially SG-1. They walk the line of being just self-aware enough, and believable enough, for it to work. It’s a real gem. My second fav is definitely Wormhole eXtreme though.
I remember the promotions making a big deal out of the visual effects of the portal and how they were achieved using practical effects in a time when CGI wasn't up to that sort of realism.
Richard Dean Anderson only took the role on Stargate SG-1 after he insisted they give O'Neil a sense of humor. He thought it would be boring trying to play Russell's stoic, brooding version of O'Neil every week. Jack was at a conference one time and he mentioned to someone that there was another Jack O'Neil, but "he spells his name with two L's." in reference to the movie. lol
So fun fact, the effects for the Stargate activation (typically referred to as the vwoosh by fans) along with the vortex that appears behind it were created with practical effects. They filled a clear container with water and shot pressurised air into it to create that explosion of bubbles effect. They then put a fan at the bottom of the container to create the vortex. They proceeded to super-impose both shots on the Stargate. Credit to both James Spader and Kurt Russell, they may not have been entirely invested in the material of the script, but they still gave the roles their best performances. Also, David Arnold - who scored the music for the film - has provided the music on two other Roland Emerich films, Independence Day and the 1998 Godzilla. He also worked on the scores for three of Pearce Brosnan's Bond movies as well as the first two of Daniel Craig's Bond films. Man has mad talent.
Me too. I watched Stargate SG-1 with my dad too. I can't remember how many seasons, but I remember it aired later in the evening. I loved the show a lot. I bought the full DVD collection a while ago and it's still as good as I remeber. The show picks up right after the movie and still is very enjoyable to watch.
Catherine is played by Viveca Lindfors, a Swedish actress who had a career going back to the 1940s, including “The Adventures of Don Juan” with Errol Flynn. She’s also in “The Sure Thing” with John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga, which should be on your “to see” list.
It was Lindfors last mainstream role. Her last movie was in the more artsy "Last Summer in the Hamptons." I met Lindfors while she was filming this quite coincidentally on an outing with my mother and sister.. My mother, who was born in Sweden, started to speak with her. The actress was quite annoyed that neither my sister nor I could speak fluent Swedish, but merely understood some.
After the movie, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin talked about doing a sequel but that never materialised and they moved onto other projects. Meanwhile the Stargate project ended up in the hands of the guys who went on to produce the TV show, which starts off one year after the events of the movie and ran for ten seasons, with a couple of TV movies and the two spinoff series Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe.
I like that Amanda Tapping (Sam) tells Richard Dean Anderson (O'Neil) to Macgyver up before they go through the Stargate together for the first time on SG-1.

I remember when Stargate came out. Every day I saw the poster in front at the local theater when I returned home by bus. When the film was released VHS, I rented it and watched with my family. My father was so enthusiastic at the end that he said: "Where did you get this movie from?" 😄
I remember my mom dropped me off at the local theater so I could watch this. I was like 10 and I don’t recall anyone else being in there with me. Loved it. And James Spader is now one of my favorite actors because Boston Legal and Blacklist.
I watched this when it came out. I was in linguistics school and a bunch of us went together. We laughed when the guy said, "you're the linguist, talk to them" because that is exactly how people think about linguists.
James Spader series you were talking about is "The Blacklist" as Raymond 'Red' Reddington. James Spader was also in a great satirical lawyer series with William Shatner called "Boston Legal"
"Give my regards to King Tut, asshole." Very good movie that launched one of the best Sci-Fi series ever, "Stargate SG-1"! Highly recommend checking out the series when and if you have the time, great cast with amazing chemistry, not to mention great writers, creators who actually wanted the show to be as scientifically accurate as possible, despite the whole premise of the show being based entirely on theoretical physics. Also, if you like Kurt Russell you really should watch his performance in "Soldier" (1998), barely says anything the whole movie, but even then his acting is just astonishing... That and his character is a BADASS!
I remember when it came out, the big selling point was that they used lots of real extras, like in the early movies. I would classify it as a pure action/adventure movie, not really sci-fi per se. I can't think of any sci-fi theme.
The Stargate franchise has clocked up more hours of science fiction TV than any other apart from the Big Two - Star Trek and Doctor Who. And both of those have been around on and off since the Sixties. An impressive statistic.
one of my favorite movies and actors. It led to my favorite tv series ever, Stargate SG-1 and then led into Stargate Atlantis. Stargate tv series is the longest Syfy show ever, meaning, to never take a break. Straight through 10 years. Miss it. Remember, O'neil said he was there in case they succeed. His own mission , going to the other side is to close the gate so aliens cant come to earth. HIS mission not telling the others is to set the bomb, and get back to earth all of them . He didnt create earth he was a alien. Earth was original domain. Years later the tv series takes off from where the movie ended. Jack O'neil is now Richard Dean Anderson who is hilarious and great ( the original macgyver) and then the supporting cast which were amazing. Spader doesn't come back but his replacement, Michael Shanks, is insanely good. Sam Carter.. It is so worth binging. Then , once you get through 10 seasons, it leads you into stargate atlantis.
Ra keeps the kids around so that he has a viable host to inhabit if his present body is too badly damaged, or if his sarcophagus fails to reinvigorate him. It's something that most of his species do as a precautionary measure.
We never see the Ra kids in the second half of the movie. Did they flee when Daniel and the remaining Marines fled? Or did the sadly perish with Ra on his spaceship?
My ex-wife and I saw Stargate at the theater when it was released. It is still to this day one of my favorite movies of all time, and that's saying a lot because I'm about to turn 70!
Jurassic Park 1993. Stargate 1994. Jumanji 1995. Twister 1996. Titanic 1997. I know Titanic is not like the others but the 90s knew how to do the big blockbuster action/adventure movies and those are just the first titles that came to mind. I still think the 80s wins for sheer volume of really watchable standalone movies, especially in kid-friendly sci-fi/fantasy, but for me aged 7-17 during the 1990s, it was a great time to be a tween/teen.
Grew up in the 90s too by the grace of God. And yeah even low tier movies from back then make modern blockbusters seem like sterile approximations of films.

I would call that "a thing to ignore". 🙄 It's NOT "in a different universe" as you call it, since many of the actors and characters are the same ones as in this movie.

So it wouldn't take them very long to try them all. It's not like they'd have to try every combination of all seven symbols, which is what they were facing before Jackson found the carving. Couldn't that open up gates to other destinations, though? And one wouldn't know where it was going until stepping through, and if you're wrong, you're kind of screwed.
@@donnaroo8042 Unlikely. Remember that the first six symbols define where you're going and the last defines where you're coming from. If you get where you're coming from wrong, it's unlikely that you'll make any connection at all. Kind of like dialing a phone number on your smart phone but then not pressing Send.

Think of it like the Big Trouble, Little China reference becoming his primary personality. Michael Shanks will take over playing Daniel Jackson from James Spader. He's actually going to do an incredible job of being very much like him (even though he's clearly younger), eventually he will make the character his own but it comes across as incredible character development. The cast from Abydos, will reprisal their roles. Now there will be minor (and I stress minor) lore changes between them, Abydos is now not on the other side of the universe but only a few dozen light years away (one of the closest stars). This was done make the space travel more believable (Ra's ship shouldn't have been able to go that far in just 10,000 years). The alien design for Ra's species gets changed (saved budget and made them taking over human bodies more believable too... the alien design is more parasitic now) You will also get 2 other new leads. Samantha "Sam" Carter, played by Amanda Tapping, who is both a fighter pilot and physicist. She'll become one of the best written female characters in a science fiction series ever. The actress actually told the writers to just writer her as a regular character and let her figure out how to add the femininity that would be occasionally needed. Plus she was huge on as close to accurate science as possible, so she didn't come off as an idiot spewing babble because she knew fans would care. This resulted in the writers hiring real physicist. The actress also went on to producing and directing episodes in later years too. After that doing the same with other scifi/fantasy TV series too. Then Teal'c, an human hybrid warrior of another Egyptian "God", who realizes they're not gods and hates serving them but sees no alternatives besides slowly building his own resistance movement. The pilot, and first 5 seasons, were made by Showtime, the next 5 and spin-offs [and direct to DVD films] were made by Sci-Fi (later Sy-Fy) Channel. Anyways Showtime wanted nudity, it's only in the pilot episode though, so prepare for some extra editing in two scenes. However the producers (and were against it from the beginning but you can't tell the people paying for the show no unless it's gonna lose them viewers) and test audiences hated the nudity (so thankfully they could tell Showtime they tried it but it didn't work), so it won't repeat. Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe all get better with nearly every season. So give each time, they all get better and better. I will say Universe has a darker tone than the other 2. It nearly rivals Star Trek, Star Wars, and Dr Who in the amount of content it has... and Amazon just bought the rights, and they're figuring out right now how to bring back the series. It's only not happened yet because of covid and then the writing/acting strikes.
I mean if you boil it down, technology is applied understanding of how to manipulate natural forces to get a desired result reliably. Doesn't matter if the power manipulated is mana, kinetic energy, or whatever, as long as you have a scientific system to use it, it's tech. It only gets iffy if discussing intuitive systems that don't study it and set up academic systems... and even less with Pratchett, where narrativum is a thing. Although I guess, "being genre-savvy" is a sort of scientific understanding of narrativum...

I love the movie, but to me it’s particularly special because it inspired my favorite tv series of all time, Stargate: SG-1. I know 10 seasons may seem daunting but it’s truly an amazing sci-fi series with compelling characters, and I hope you’ll one day watch it from the start.

I once went camping with friends and we had very little forms of entertainment along with us. The one thing we had was a portable battery operated radio. We were up very late listening to a radio call in show. The host was interviewing a lawyer who claims that as a child he and other children were used in a government experiment. The lawyer claims from what he remembers as an adult it was some sort of device similar to a stargate. We were all blown away by it because the lawyer interviewed sounded like he was serious. The shocking part was that he remembers some kids being disfigured going through the device. The lawyer I believe wrote a book about it and they did mention this movie in their conversation. I don't remember how this movie was connected to what they were talking about. The radio program was one of the most interesting things I think I ever heard on a radio interview show.

Yeah, you should watch Stargate SG-1. Just keep in mind that the first season is hit or miss, but the season ends well and the show keeps getting better over the next few seasons. Stargate Atlantis is just as good, too. Must See TV.

It's a fun film, but Stargate SG-1 definitely took you into a much more immersive and expansive version of this world. SG-1 is one of my favourite TV shows and as a Canadian, it's fun to recognize so many areas and Canadian actors in it, too. I actually think you'd love it! Definitely something to add to your ever expanding TBW list. 😅

I watched this in Korea with subtitles when I was around 13, I think. My mom took me and my brother to the video tape rental shop in the neighborhood time to time back then. We got to watch so many Disney's, and Hollywood movies. For some reason I chose stargate and I LOVED it right away. It Immediately became one of my favorite movies. Then we moved to US few years later and I got to watch the entire TV series starting from Season 5 or 6 and re-runs of the previous seasons. I could not wait for the new episodes on Fridays. I was glued to the TV for hours when the Scifi channel was doing a marathon for a day or something. I learned so many expressions from the show. Where else would I learn when to say something like "For crying out loud!!" or "Indeed." Also, the fact that they are team of people who has different professions helped widening my vocabulary spectrum as well. I mean if you watch something like House MD, they almost always talk about medical stuff, and almost nothing else, but SG-1 had a Soldier whose vocab is colorful, a archeologist who does not shut up, a scientist who speaks, well, science, and a jaffa who does not speak much.
Some actors hate being known for only one role over their entire body of work. Basil Rathbone apparently resented being known only for the Sherlock Holmes movies and radio dramas of the 1940s.

Fun fact, After the success of this film the makers went on to do Independence Day ! Meanwhile MGM (the studio) wanted a sequel and a few Canadian TV producers suggested a TV show instead. The result was Stargate SG-1 and eventually its sequels. As franchise it is one of the Better Science fiction dramas. While you have the big three (Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who) Stargate is certainly a runner up! Good reaction to a classic film!
Star Wars and Dr Who are fantasy, not science fiction. Babylon 5 and Mass Effect are better examples of science fiction. For that matter, Assassin's Creed is a better example science fiction than Star Wars.

Space opera is a space-based fantasy/fiction, not sci-fi. Star Wars does not count as _sci-fi_ because there's no _sci_ there. Star Trek is/was based on scientific knowledge of the time, and projected what that technology would lead to. Mass Effect, The Expanse, Babylon 5, and Battlestar Galactica are all science-based fiction like Star Trek. They just happen to take place in space. Assassin's Creed is science-based fiction, with the meta-story allowing exploration of various historical eras. Star Wars is based on whatever George Lucas thinks is cool. Im sincerely surprised anyone in her position, being relatively new to film, could have such a strong memory of the details of so many movies.
Stargate SG-1 has over 200 episodes but it's absolutely brilliant. Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'niell and Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson have just some of the best chemistry on television and the show delivers with both sci-fi action and a hefty dose of laughs.
And all the episodes are great from start to finish.

The thing that made Stargate SG-1 so unique is that it was us, present day humans from the 1990s, going up against Aliens. There weren't any spaceships (at first). There was just the Stargate, which allowed us to go anywhere, basically. The show had to change some things from the movie, to make it all work, but I prefer what the show did. If you start watching SG-1, while also watching TNG, then I think I just died and went to Heaven.
One thing hat Gene Roddenberry did with Star Trek TOS, was create the 'transporter'. Mainly as a story device to move the story along faster, as he didn't want time taken up on ships and shuttlecrafts/shuttlepods getting to their destinations. As Trek's TOS often started the episode with the Enterprise getting to the destination at the outset, it got into the story faster.
They took Emmerich's idea and used it much like the ships and transporter, all rolled into one. And got us into the stories quicker.
Problem....while TNG episodes where mostly standalone, we can trim 20 episodes a season down to just 4-5 for Cassie to get the highlights, I think that's more difficult in SG1. While it's not strictly a continuous story, there are so many connecting threads that all advance together. I mean Season 1....1-3 are practically a single extended pilot...8 you meet the Nox...10 the Unas and tease Thor...11 Reconnects with catherine and defines the 4 races....12 Teal'c's Son and Master Bra'tac...14 HATHOR! 15 introduces Cassandra (okay...we have to trim, so maybe we skip 14 and 15) ....16 Teal'c gets more character growth in one episode than some characters will see in a season! This is the equivalent of Tasha's death! ...17 meet the Tollan, relevant for many seasons....surely we can skip18..no it introduces the 2nd Stargate...19..the robot doubles only ever come up once, I guess we can skip it., (but it's sooo good!)...20-22....practically an extended season finale...okay...21-22 then. Hell if we trim with a chainsaw...1,2, 8, 11, 12, 16!!!, 17, 21,22. I don't think you can cut it down further without leaving massive lore gaps in later seasons.
I agree with the OP, I also always thought that made SG-1 very unique. The idea, which they occasionally came back to, that while everyone else has a DHD and doesn't even think how the Stargates work, our guys had to MacGuyver (haha) a way to control it with a 90s supercomputer - and ended up learning more about it in the process.
It was great watching them evolve with the times. In the first few seasons they were using floppy disks 💾 😅

As a realist, I don't expect Cassie to watch 10 seasons of SG-1, let alone Atlantis and Universe. But I'd LOVE to see her react to at least the pilot TV episode, or Season 1.
She' doesn't seem to do whole series, Great style if it works for you, but it doesn't for me.
If she were to do just the pilot for SG-1, she should try to find the "Children of the Gods: The Final Cut" version that was released on DVD in 2009. It was a special edition re-edit, remix, rescore version of the pilot that brought the quality up and made it feel more like the rest of the series.
It is also more like a stand-alone sequel, since it removes 1 or 2 cliffhanger details that led into the next episode, etc.
An entire series I'd like to see her do is the re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica".
So would I! One of those rare cases of the sequel being better than the original.
This movie is great, but the end point being in a different galaxy doesn't make sense given the coordinate system, I *really* didn't like how the military team was depicted as immature idiots who apparently hadn't even considered the possibility of being stuck on an alien world, and I generally got the impression that the writers hadn't quite thought through the actual nature of the aliens.
@@brigidtheirish The nature of the aliens fluctuates a bit probably because Ra’s death with his closeup was a reshoot insert to make it clearer to audiences that he died (they originally only showed the ship blowing up). So we didn’t see him revert to his Asgard-like form originally.
Richard Dean Anderson's portrayal of the character is awesome because while he is funny and goofy the majority of the time, there are moments where he gets deadly serious and you can sense it. He's a very underrated actor.

He's a great example of the difference between playing a character as cold or emotionless (as is often done for military characters) and playing as understated or restrained. Anderson (and Russell) make it clear they have emotions but can't afford to let them interfere with their job.
And half of him on screen is improv. The rest of the cast just had to adapt. As he was also one of the writers
At first I was put off by him replacing the dude who played the part in the movie, I didn't like it. He should have been in the movie, he was a great pick.
Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are two of my favourite TV series. They expand the Stargate lore so well and provide a rich history. I recommend it and the chemistry of the SG-1 team is so good that they make it easy to get invested in their adventures.

I haven't watched the movie in ages but SG-1 and Atlantis remain at the very tippy top of my fav TV-shows of all time. I've rewatched both shows several times. They have that perfect mix of self aware silliness (not so much at the very beginning, but it grows into it) and seriousness.
I became a major fan. I have all the TV series (including spinoffs) and all the movies
they're never off tv in the UK, they're on daily in the mid afternoon
I still remember, for all my absolute adoration of Macgyver and Richard Dean Anderson as a kid, hating that he got roped into what seemed like an obvious cash grab (to uninformed, young me). Then the show went to SciFi and they were running a 4-hour block of it every Monday. I *immediately* became a fan. I did and still like the movie as its own thing, or as an alternate-universe take on events.

The series of stargate SG-1 is bright light in the sci fi world.
While most new sci fi are overfilled with interpersonal drama that only wears the guise of sci fi, sg-1 actually appeals to the adventure/mystery/sci fi demographic in a real sense.
Kusaf ( The Leader/ Father) is played by Erick Avari. He was in The Mummy, The Chosen and numerous other things. He's a great actor.

I remember when my wife and I were watching The Blacklist, I showed her a picture of him from an '80s movie and she refused to believe it was the same actor.

As a polyglot this movie has my absolute favorite linguistics joke of all time. When Jackson is about to tell the story about how the people became enslaved he's asked "I thought you didn't speak the language?" and he replies "Oh, it's easy once you know the vowels."
Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs are only the consonants, we have no idea what the vowels are so they have to take their best guesses on what a shockingly large amount of stuff is actually saying. I can guarantee that joke goes over 99.999% of audiences heads but it still cracks me up.
Speaking seven languages, I got the joke.
As a linguist, there's also a fair bit of believable linguistics in Stargate (e.g phonological shifts from ancient languages). Someone knew their stuff in the writing team.

I've noticed a lot of movies these days when you watch them on streaming don't have subtitles when it's some sort of alien language but I remember on the DVDs or watching in the movie theaters they had a translation because it was part of the story
In the theaters the subtitles were in the actual print of the film. In today's digital media they tuck the subtitles away in the data stream.

Ill say this. If you EVER do a full watch through of ANY Sci-Fi TV series Stargate SG-1 is IMO one of the top choices. It has one of if not the most internally consistent worlds, meaning rules they set up during season 1 still apply in season 8, and has some of the best story telling of any Sci-Fi series ever released. Now unfortunately you dont get Kurt Russell back but you do get a EXCELLENT replacement in Richard Dean Anderson, aka the OG MacGyver.

SG-1 (and its spin-offs) and Farscape, plus (though they're a different branch of sci-fi) Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Fringe, remain my four favorite sci-fi series (I'm not counting Firefly, because it was only one truncated season, which makes it a more of a mini-series, and I didn't know it existed until AFTER I saw Serenity in theater with a friend who told me about it).
Don't get me wrong - there are easily dozens more shows that I love and that deserve recognition and reactions. But nothing would make me sub to a channel quicker than someone reacting to those shows!

I actually met James Spader in Richmond VA when he was filming Lincoln. It was at a rite aid and he was there with his family who was sick at the time so he didn’t want pictures or attention drawn to them, but he still talked to me and it was a positive experience, nice guy. He was not rude and took the time to say hi and explain why he needed to lay low and go.
When I was in college, a radio station had a call in question. I don't remember what it was, but I called in and answered it correctly. My prize was a DVD copy of this movie. I hadn't seen it before, but I enjoyed it very much. I was so happy when he was able to bring her back to life. "Go, Sha'uri. It's ya birthday!"
The old lady who appeared early in the film was the late Viveca Lindfors. She played Bedelia in one of the short stories in Creepshow (1982). She died in 1995 and Stargate was one of her very last films.
One of my teachers at UCLA was the technical advisor on this film. He also wrote the Egyptian word-script which is the foreign language in this film.

I was blown away by the special effects when I saw it in the cinema, that and the concept of dialling the Gate at the start. There was a narrow window when Stargate could've been made, when the special effects were good enough but people still found the concept of rotary phones natural. A great film but it spun off an even better TV series.
To be honest SG1 had a LOT more time to world build the the movie so yes it was more enjoyable because of that. The movie was a great movie with great world building for the time allowed.

One of the most important movies of my childhood! My entire family has a lifelong obsession with the Stargate TV shows, and this was how it all started. I remember how excited we were when the show was announced, and we still rewatch it religiously. 😄
I highly recommend watching the show or at least the pilot movie! It's like a precursor to Star Trek where a more flawed, contemporary society takes the first steps to one day hopefully becoming something like Star Trek.

Stargate is one of my favorite universes. Just like Star Trek it's mostly really smart people cooperating well. Atlantis is probably my favorite but they are all great in their own way. I have rewatched SG-1 almost as many times as I've rewatched Buffy. Oh and yes, nearly all good TV sci-fi in the late 90s and to some extent still today was all made in Canada. Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (best TV show ever made), The Expanse, The Travelers, personal favorite Van Helsing and countless more. All having Canadian actors and guest stars that you would probably recognize even more than me.

Saw Star Wars many times in the theater in ‘77, have all the OG toys. Grew up on with TOS on tv in reruns, watched TNG and am a die hard Voyager & Enterprise fan. But even with all that, Stargate is my favorite and my happy place, especially SG-1. They walk the line of being just self-aware enough, and believable enough, for it to work. It’s a real gem.
My second fav is definitely Wormhole eXtreme though.

In 1994, when Stargate came out in theaters, it was the most anticipated and hyped movie for nearly an entire year before it was released.
Saw it opening night. Wasn't disappointed.
I remember the promotions making a big deal out of the visual effects of the portal and how they were achieved using practical effects in a time when CGI wasn't up to that sort of realism.
I was eight when it came out. Just remember thinking it looked terrifying for some reason. But yeah remember the cgi being a big deal.
Richard Dean Anderson only took the role on Stargate SG-1 after he insisted they give O'Neil a sense of humor. He thought it would be boring trying to play Russell's stoic, brooding version of O'Neil every week. Jack was at a conference one time and he mentioned to someone that there was another Jack O'Neil, but "he spells his name with two L's." in reference to the movie. lol
So fun fact, the effects for the Stargate activation (typically referred to as the vwoosh by fans) along with the vortex that appears behind it were created with practical effects.
They filled a clear container with water and shot pressurised air into it to create that explosion of bubbles effect. They then put a fan at the bottom of the container to create the vortex.
They proceeded to super-impose both shots on the Stargate.
Credit to both James Spader and Kurt Russell, they may not have been entirely invested in the material of the script, but they still gave the roles their best performances.
Also, David Arnold - who scored the music for the film - has provided the music on two other Roland Emerich films, Independence Day and the 1998 Godzilla. He also worked on the scores for three of Pearce Brosnan's Bond movies as well as the first two of Daniel Craig's Bond films. Man has mad talent.

I watched Stargate SG-1 with my dad too. I can't remember how many seasons, but I remember it aired later in the evening.
I loved the show a lot. I bought the full DVD collection a while ago and it's still as good as I remeber.
The show picks up right after the movie and still is very enjoyable to watch.
Catherine is played by Viveca Lindfors, a Swedish actress who had a career going back to the 1940s, including “The Adventures of Don Juan” with Errol Flynn. She’s also in “The Sure Thing” with John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga, which should be on your “to see” list.
It was Lindfors last mainstream role. Her last movie was in the more artsy "Last Summer in the Hamptons." I met Lindfors while she was filming this quite coincidentally on an outing with my mother and sister.. My mother, who was born in Sweden, started to speak with her. The actress was quite annoyed that neither my sister nor I could speak fluent Swedish, but merely understood some.
After the movie, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin talked about doing a sequel but that never materialised and they moved onto other projects. Meanwhile the Stargate project ended up in the hands of the guys who went on to produce the TV show, which starts off one year after the events of the movie and ran for ten seasons, with a couple of TV movies and the two spinoff series Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe.
I like that Amanda Tapping (Sam) tells Richard Dean Anderson (O'Neil) to Macgyver up before they go through the Stargate together for the first time on SG-1.

I remember when Stargate came out. Every day I saw the poster in front at the local theater when I returned home by bus. When the film was released VHS, I rented it and watched with my family. My father was so enthusiastic at the end that he said: "Where did you get this movie from?" 😄
I remember my mom dropped me off at the local theater so I could watch this. I was like 10 and I don’t recall anyone else being in there with me. Loved it.
And James Spader is now one of my favorite actors because Boston Legal and Blacklist.

Very good movie that launched one of the best Sci-Fi series ever, "Stargate SG-1"! Highly recommend checking out the series when and if you have the time, great cast with amazing chemistry, not to mention great writers, creators who actually wanted the show to be as scientifically accurate as possible, despite the whole premise of the show being based entirely on theoretical physics.
Also, if you like Kurt Russell you really should watch his performance in "Soldier" (1998), barely says anything the whole movie, but even then his acting is just astonishing... That and his character is a BADASS!
In a couple years AI can replace MacGuyver with ol' Jack Burton. Then I'll watch the series...

The Stargate franchise has clocked up more hours of science fiction TV than any other apart from the Big Two - Star Trek and Doctor Who. And both of those have been around on and off since the Sixties. An impressive statistic.
one of my favorite movies and actors. It led to my favorite tv series ever, Stargate SG-1 and then led into Stargate Atlantis. Stargate tv series is the longest Syfy show ever, meaning, to never take a break. Straight through 10 years. Miss it. Remember, O'neil said he was there in case they succeed. His own mission , going to the other side is to close the gate so aliens cant come to earth. HIS mission not telling the others is to set the bomb, and get back to earth all of them . He didnt create earth he was a alien. Earth was original domain. Years later the tv series takes off from where the movie ended. Jack O'neil is now Richard Dean Anderson who is hilarious and great ( the original macgyver) and then the supporting cast which were amazing. Spader doesn't come back but his replacement, Michael Shanks, is insanely good. Sam Carter.. It is so worth binging. Then , once you get through 10 seasons, it leads you into stargate atlantis.
I still binge and rewatch the television show now and again. Peak late 90s TV.

Ra keeps the kids around so that he has a viable host to inhabit if his present body is too badly damaged, or if his sarcophagus fails to reinvigorate him. It's something that most of his species do as a precautionary measure.
We never see the Ra kids in the second half of the movie. Did they flee when Daniel and the remaining Marines fled? Or did the sadly perish with Ra on his spaceship?

My ex-wife and I saw Stargate at the theater when it was released. It is still to this day one of my favorite movies of all time, and that's saying a lot because I'm about to turn 70!
Jurassic Park 1993. Stargate 1994. Jumanji 1995. Twister 1996. Titanic 1997. I know Titanic is not like the others but the 90s knew how to do the big blockbuster action/adventure movies and those are just the first titles that came to mind. I still think the 80s wins for sheer volume of really watchable standalone movies, especially in kid-friendly sci-fi/fantasy, but for me aged 7-17 during the 1990s, it was a great time to be a tween/teen.
Grew up in the 90s too by the grace of God. And yeah even low tier movies from back then make modern blockbusters seem like sterile approximations of films.

Couldn't that open up gates to other destinations, though? And one wouldn't know where it was going until stepping through, and if you're wrong, you're kind of screwed.
@@donnaroo8042 Unlikely. Remember that the first six symbols define where you're going and the last defines where you're coming from. If you get where you're coming from wrong, it's unlikely that you'll make any connection at all. Kind of like dialing a phone number on your smart phone but then not pressing Send.
Ok... now in prep for the show. Russell Dean Anderson (the original MacGyver) will take over playing Jack O'Neill, he's a lot funner. Think of it like the Big Trouble, Little China reference becoming his primary personality.
Michael Shanks will take over playing Daniel Jackson from James Spader. He's actually going to do an incredible job of being very much like him (even though he's clearly younger), eventually he will make the character his own but it comes across as incredible character development.
The cast from Abydos, will reprisal their roles.
Now there will be minor (and I stress minor) lore changes between them, Abydos is now not on the other side of the universe but only a few dozen light years away (one of the closest stars). This was done make the space travel more believable (Ra's ship shouldn't have been able to go that far in just 10,000 years). The alien design for Ra's species gets changed (saved budget and made them taking over human bodies more believable too... the alien design is more parasitic now)
You will also get 2 other new leads. Samantha "Sam" Carter, played by Amanda Tapping, who is both a fighter pilot and physicist. She'll become one of the best written female characters in a science fiction series ever. The actress actually told the writers to just writer her as a regular character and let her figure out how to add the femininity that would be occasionally needed. Plus she was huge on as close to accurate science as possible, so she didn't come off as an idiot spewing babble because she knew fans would care. This resulted in the writers hiring real physicist. The actress also went on to producing and directing episodes in later years too. After that doing the same with other scifi/fantasy TV series too.
Then Teal'c, an human hybrid warrior of another Egyptian "God", who realizes they're not gods and hates serving them but sees no alternatives besides slowly building his own resistance movement.
The pilot, and first 5 seasons, were made by Showtime, the next 5 and spin-offs [and direct to DVD films] were made by Sci-Fi (later Sy-Fy) Channel. Anyways Showtime wanted nudity, it's only in the pilot episode though, so prepare for some extra editing in two scenes. However the producers (and were against it from the beginning but you can't tell the people paying for the show no unless it's gonna lose them viewers) and test audiences hated the nudity (so thankfully they could tell Showtime they tried it but it didn't work), so it won't repeat.
Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe all get better with nearly every season. So give each time, they all get better and better. I will say Universe has a darker tone than the other 2. It nearly rivals Star Trek, Star Wars, and Dr Who in the amount of content it has... and Amazon just bought the rights, and they're figuring out right now how to bring back the series. It's only not happened yet because of covid and then the writing/acting strikes.
That's all great and super informative! One thing, though - Colonel Jack O'Neill-cum-MacGuyver was played by *Richard* Dean Anderson, not Russell.

I love the movie, but to me it’s particularly special because it inspired my favorite tv series of all time, Stargate: SG-1. I know 10 seasons may seem daunting but it’s truly an amazing sci-fi series with compelling characters, and I hope you’ll one day watch it from the start.

I once went camping with friends and we had very little forms of entertainment along with us. The one thing we had was a portable battery operated radio. We were up very late listening to a radio call in show. The host was interviewing a lawyer who claims that as a child he and other children were used in a government experiment. The lawyer claims from what he remembers as an adult it was some sort of device similar to a stargate. We were all blown away by it because the lawyer interviewed sounded like he was serious. The shocking part was that he remembers some kids being disfigured going through the device. The lawyer I believe wrote a book about it and they did mention this movie in their conversation. I don't remember how this movie was connected to what they were talking about. The radio program was one of the most interesting things I think I ever heard on a radio interview show.

It's a fun film, but Stargate SG-1 definitely took you into a much more immersive and expansive version of this world. SG-1 is one of my favourite TV shows and as a Canadian, it's fun to recognize so many areas and Canadian actors in it, too. I actually think you'd love it! I watched this in Korea with subtitles when I was around 13, I think. My mom took me and my brother to the video tape rental shop in the neighborhood time to time back then. We got to watch so many Disney's, and Hollywood movies. For some reason I chose stargate and I LOVED it right away. It Immediately became one of my favorite movies. Then we moved to US few years later and I got to watch the entire TV series starting from Season 5 or 6 and re-runs of the previous seasons. I could not wait for the new episodes on Fridays. I was glued to the TV for hours when the Scifi channel was doing a marathon for a day or something. I learned so many expressions from the show. Where else would I learn when to say something like "For crying out loud!!" or "Indeed." Also, the fact that they are team of people who has different professions helped widening my vocabulary spectrum as well. I mean if you watch something like House MD, they almost always talk about medical stuff, and almost nothing else, but SG-1 had a Soldier whose vocab is colorful, a archeologist who does not shut up, a scientist who speaks, well, science, and a jaffa who does not speak much.
Kurt Russell with a flat top. You've gotta check out Soldier. He's pretty jacked too.
And he has less dialogue than Rambo - his son is in it as well

It's funny that she feels bad about not recognizing actors in certain roles she liked, but it's probably the highest compliment you can pay an actor.
Some actors hate being known for only one role over their entire body of work.
Basil Rathbone apparently resented being known only for the Sherlock Holmes movies and radio dramas of the 1940s.

It always bugs me.
"Who's this actor?" Or "Who's voicing this character?" Or "I know this actor, I think?"
Erik Avari is a funny one because she watched him in The Mummy just a few months ago.

Meanwhile MGM (the studio) wanted a sequel and a few Canadian TV producers suggested a TV show instead. The result was Stargate SG-1 and eventually its sequels.
As franchise it is one of the Better Science fiction dramas. While you have the big three (Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who) Stargate is certainly a runner up!

Babylon 5 and Mass Effect are better examples of science fiction.
For that matter, Assassin's Creed is a better example science fiction than Star Wars.

No. Space opera is _space,_ the setting. Space as a setting can be fantasy, or sci-fi, or historical drama. The _Opera_ part defines the style/genre of the piece. Space opera is a space-based fantasy/fiction, not sci-fi.
Star Wars does not count as _sci-fi_ because there's no _sci_ there.
Star Trek is/was based on scientific knowledge of the time, and projected what that technology would lead to. Mass Effect, The Expanse, Babylon 5, and Battlestar Galactica are all science-based fiction like Star Trek. They just happen to take place in space. Assassin's Creed is science-based fiction, with the meta-story allowing exploration of various historical eras.
Star Wars is based on whatever George Lucas thinks is cool. It has roots in philosophy and religion, not science.
Dr Who is pure fantasy.
