There may be some bias seeing as this is a Stargate movie, but which tv series do you recommend that I watch first: Star Trek or Stargate?

Yeah, I'm biased, but so many reactors started watching Star Trek in the last year or so, while Stargate is being completely ignored, and I'd love to watch more people watch it.
Of course, the real best answer is the 2004 Battlestar Galactica.

SG-1 is definitely the starting point for the rest of the series. It creates an immersive world that picks up after the events of the movie. It really does ascend to higher depths than the movie ever could, yet keeps the same concept and tone at the same time!

SG-1 starts strong(ish), gets better and then falls off some cliff... SG Atlantis is a spinoff after season 7 of SG-1, so at the end of the second season after the switch to Sci-Fi Channel. Atlantis starts decent and keeps production quality on par. The one after that, Stargate Universe, is... not very well thought out. Only two seasons long, it most likely didn't ever find its stride and was cut short. And Stargate: Origins will be covered under a blanket of silence and regret.

All three TV series are sci-fi action adventures, but SG-1 developed a genuinely comedic overtone which Atlantis carried through, but Universe dropped due to that show trying to be Battlestar Galactica within the Stargate franchise.

Kert Russell was a Disney darling as a kid, teen, and young adult actor. Three movies that stand out to me one is, "The computer, who ware sneakers," and as an older actor, when he met Goldie Hawn on the set of "Over Borde" and thread is "Big Trouble in Little China." He did have some serious acting roles. "Todd" was one of those movies, "The Thing" is another one. There is one that I can't remember the name of, but it's something like "Off Road" or something. It's where he and his wife have their car bracke down or a hit and run.
someone stops to help them. The guy offered to drive her to a gas station for help, an hr gose by. No sign of help or even a phone call from her.
But then he gets a call from her cellphone. It's the kidnappers...
That is all I remembered for that movie.
I hope this helps you with your Kert Russell movies marathon.
P.S. when they were making Stargate SG1, Kert was working on his next movie next door. On a break from filming, he stopped by to see the show typing. The movie Kert was filming was "Pink Cadillac." A fun tie back to the Stargate franchise and Kert Russell.

If you enjoyed the movie, then I think you would like Stargate SG-1 (which continues the story) as well. Just a word of advice - it is a 10 seasons long TV show, so it starts off a little slowly, but gets bigger and better with every season (at least until the season 7 or 8). At first it is mostly a more modest exploration show with a lot of interesting ideas and stories, many of which get developed later into the show. But eventually it really opens up and you get to see all the things you would expect from a space sci-fi (like space battles etc.). And I personally like Stargate Atlantis too (but I had to get used to it a bit at first). And one thing that shouldn't be forgotten - both shows have a great sense of humour. It would be great if you reacted to Stargate show, very few people do.

SG1 is my go-to whenever I feel sad. It's just such an intensely enjoyable series. There's action, there's humor, there's mythology, hijinks... Every episode is a fun new adventure and I love that so much. I'd LOVE to see your reactions to some of the episodes and the general overarching story as the show passes the first few fun seasons and gets into the grittier storylines. The show doesn't star Kurt Russel or James Spader, but the actors who take over their roles (RDA and Michael Shanks) have truly brilliant chemistry. I think you'd really enjoy it.

Re: the baddies leaving their ship at the end, they thought they were too powerful for the locals or the people from Earth to pose any danger to them.
The original plan was for the film to be the first of a trilogy, so they needed an excuse for Jackson to stay behind, hence the love subplot. For whatever reason, they ended up going with a TV series instead, but now this is causing issues because Roland Emmerich's contract with MGM stated that any subsequent film based on Stargate would be offered to Emmerich first. Post Amazone's acquisition of MGM, they were looking at doing something with Stargate, but Emmerich's contract still holds, so any movie had to be offered to Emmerich first. However, Emmerich isn't a fan of the Stargate TV series, so his plan would've been to reboot the entire franchise and re-do his originally planned trilogy of films. Needless to say that didn't go over well with the fans of the TV series, and that's why we still haven't seen any new Stargate shows or films (at least one of the reasons anyway).
Anysways, I'm glad you enjoyed the film, it's really great! I haven't seen many people doing reactions to the Stargate TV series on YT, so that could be interesting to see. However, there could be a reason why not many people are doing it, and I'm not talking about the intimidation of >15 _long_ seasons of TV. It's possible someone at MGM might be a bit eager to smash the copyright hammer on anyone who's tried. My suggestion if you're in contact with any other reactors would be to ask around if anyone's tried uploading a reaction to Stargate SG1.
That said, I would certainly be interested to see your reaction to Stargate SG1, since it's one of my favourite TV series of all time (of all time). If you do decide to watch it, no spoilers, but keep in mind it was made a few years later, and by a completely different team to the film.

Kurt Russell was huge star in the ‘80s and ‘90s. He began his career as a child actor, becoming a Disney teen heartthrob and eventually transitioning to action star. Would recommend the movies he did with John Carpenter: Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), and Big Trouble in Little China (1986), as well as the project that followed Stargate, Executive Decision (1996). Various other recommended Russell movies are Silkwood (1983), Tequila Sunrise (1988), Tango & Cash (1989), Backdraft (1991), and Tombstone (1993).

Big thing about SG-1 for the fans is the LORE. The series expands on the lore of the IP SOOOOOO much. It is much more than a story of the week series, it has those, but there are setups in season 1 that dont pay off till season 5 or 6. Also one of the most consistent IPs, meaning if they explain they cant do X cause of Y in season 1 its still that way in season 7, unless they provide some in world advancement that makes it possible.

yes... there is a LOT of Stargate. There is...
    - Stargate SG-1 - 10 full 22 episode seasons
    - Stargate Atlantis - 5 full 22 episode seasons
    - Stargate Universe - 2 full 22 episode seasons
There are also some "internet shorts" that kind of fill in some things.. .if I recall there's about 8 of these shorts, all about 5-10 minutes each, which I believe they group together and called it 1 season of "Stargate Origins". There is also 1 season of an animated Stargate called "Stargate Infinity" (which I myself never watched because I just found out about it right now)
And there are 2 movies (besides this original movie) that pretty much take place after SG-1.
And...although it is STILL not 100% guaranteed... they ARE "supposed" to be working on a new Stargate series, a full 13 years after the end of Universe. I haven't heard any updates in a while but last I heard from trustworthy sources was that it was going to be a continuation of the story... which is what the vast majority of people want, and not a reboot. And it is scheduled to come out in the 2nd half of 2025. I haven't heard any real update on this in a while though and there "may" be some trouble that could either delay or even cancel the project.
It's been a ROUGH road just to get to this point. They have been trying to get a new Stargate series going pretty much since SGU ended!
And I'm writing this before you even start the actual reaction so I don't know how you ended up liking the movie... but regardless, in my opinion the TV series are much better than the movie!
I would LOVE to watch you react to the ENTIRE series... but at the very least, if you enjoyed the movie you should at the very least watch it on your own if you don't end up reacting to it!

I won't say anything else so as to not spoil anything, but I will say that they change a few bits of the lore. First off, in this movie the Stargate goes across the universe, but in the TV series it only goes within our own galaxy. And the "aliens" a adjusted slightly... still basically the same, but made some minor adjustments to them

This is such a classic 90s sci-fi movie and I love how all the actors commented about how terrible they thought it was going to be 😄
I always felt that Ra could have been a lot more intimidating but when you're cosplaying a God and have super minions to do your dirty work I guess you're allowed to focus on your hair styles and fancy clothing instead.
So overall there was 10 seasons of SG-1, 5 of Atlantis, 2 of Universe, as well as 2 direct to DVD movies: Ark of Truth and Continuum. There were 2 other shows of 1 season length - 'Origins', and 'Infinity' which is animated, but fans generally regard these as not worth bothering with. That is a lot of TV shows, each season is about 20 episodes, each episode is ~45 mins.
If you are wanting to look at starting the show (which I'd definitely recommend despite the big time commitment) then the first 2 episodes of SG-1 season 1 (Children of the Gods) were actually rereleased in 2009 into a "final cut version" which is actually where I'd suggest you start and this seems to be the version available on some streaming services by default. I did a rewatch of the series after you released the full reaction on Patreon, the Amazon Prime series has that final cut version for the first episodes and I was surprised at how well the whole show held up!

It just goes to show how some movies turn out to be loved when originally people thought it would be terrible 🤣
The aesthetics of Ra seemed like the most important thing. I mean, if I had minions, I would probably get lazy and focus on other things instead of power and intimidation. I'd probably also roll natural 1 for intimidation 😇
Thanks for the heads up for the first 2 episodes! I just checked and currently Stargate SG1 isn't really available in Canada, so I'll have to figure that out first.

    • @valmarkont
      @valmarkont Місяць тому

I most certainly would not suggest the "final cut" version of Children of the Gods as they removed most of the stuff that makes the pilot good, namely many of the moments that define the characters whom the first-time watcher actually doesn't know at that point. They also saw fit to add some stuff that was left out for a reason and used alternate cuts of existing scenes for no particular reason. The final cut also happens to have a very cringeworthy commentary track where they try to defend the changes they've made. Unsuccessfully, in my opinion.
