Love that Zappa’s in but I feel a huge disservice was done to the Mothers and the musicians he worked with. People like Ike Willis, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jimmy Carl Black, Flo & Eddie, Terry Bozzio and so many more were so vital to the music. I know inducting all of them is impossible but I think there should be recognition. Also there’s no Zappa representation at the Hall itself other than one mention of his PMRC speech.
I know. Ringo gets in for his shabby solo career.
consider this, he wrote all the music and songs they sang and played.
they also were paid for the privilege.
they are now making their living off the shirt tails of Frank Zappa.
Those aren't boos, they're saying Lou.
RIP to Lou but man did he look like Ripley on Alien. He really rocked the Sigourney Weaver!
LOL
Lou's views, damn I miss Frank and Lou.
Freak Out! is a masterpiece
" Help, I'm a Rock ! ".
And possibly Frank's most singly influential album - a milestone in concept albums and an influence on Sgt. Pepper.
Was so great to see this ,..
Classy speech by Lou. A great tribute to Frank.
Nothing classy about this disingenuous, selfserving waffle.
Search for Dweezil Zappa Lou Reed
Dweezil really gives it to Lou
Says this whole speech was BS
none of you think it's possible he might have changed his mind about Zappa over the years?
The issue between them in the '60s and '70s was more of an interpersonal beef, as well as the narcissism of small differences... stepping back from that there was plenty of common ground
So it's not surprising Reed came around on this
Awesome
Permanence & integrity acts as inspiration. The power of purity, vision & integrity. Casting a caustic glow acrossthe frontiers of madness that is the political system. A cultural conduit & a force for reason and honesty. He distinguishes you by knowing him.
Lou looks like somebody was holding a gun to his dog behind the curtain, ready to off him if he didn't stay on script.
I'm sure F.Z. was somewhere laughing his ass off at this.
What's the story on the glasses on Lou? Reading specs? Flipped up lens on left?
Was wondering the same.
Google glasses prototype
"Lou's Views" he actually designed them, so that you dont' have to keep switching glasses on and off for different tasks. They were produced in a limited run in 2003.
4:08 I can't lip read, but it looks like Lou told Moon, "I loved Frank."
I guess Lou was most definitely the one weird enough to induct Zappa.
Lou spent years badmouthing Zappa, and actually made a point of rescheduling one his gigs from the Odeon to the Rainbow because he wanted to be able to look down on where Zappa was almost killed.
"I know Frank admired me" is Lou being a dick.
@@surfdigby lol
@@surfdigby I think it was Lou's ego comparing himself erroneously as a favorably comparative musician to Frank. Sorry Lou. Not even close.
@@williamrice1955 You do realize that Frank was a fan of VU right?
@@ryanhernandez8540 He was certainly not
In the dictionary under "Something else" and "off the wall" it says "See Frank Zappa."
I don’t understand this. Didn’t Lou shit on Zappa every chance he got?
The Howard Stern look was pretty big at the time.
My pops is still rocking it like it's 1988. Except fatter and greyer.
velvet underground and Zappa hated each other. wonder how Lou was selected to induct Frank?
I don't get it either, Reed has actually said Frank Zappa is the most untalented musician ever. Which is ironic because Lou Reed as a musician has no talent at all.
Dweezil can answer that: ua-cam.com/video/3wbZWDdU4tk/v-deo.html
There is an interview with Dweezil Zappa about this. The family asked for Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson to induct Frank, the RnR Hall of Fame said no as “he’s a drug addict”, so they suggested Joe Perry and Steven Tyler as a backup, that was also turned down “we’re thinking Lou Reed”. After a phone call with Gail Zappa where Lou Reed had to apologise for his past comments it was arranged that he would read this speech which the family felt was phoney and bogus. Who knows? The rock and roll hall of fame does have a strange history with back room politics.
@@doggity5149 You'd have to not be a musician to think such stupid thoughts about Lou Reed.
@@jethrorae1632 I am a musician, please show me where Lou Reed show his expert skills on the guitar. I dare you.
Why not Steve Vai, Alice Cooper or Dee Snider?
Even Though I Liked Twisted Sister I'd Have Say many more Deserving it more than Dee Snider!
Lou Reed: “Frank Zappa is the most untalented musician I’ve ever heard."
Source ?
Frank might have admired Reed, but I doubt it was becouse of Reed's composing skills.
Probably not, but one of Zappa’s favorite records ever was Philosophy of the World by The Shaggs, which makes Lou Reed sound like Beethoven.
Lou Reed had the musical talent and ability of an empty trash can. Drugs turn shit to gold……. At least for a moment
Although it has to be said that Fr∆nk was years ahead of the rest of his peers, and the generations that followed, it must be concluded that a lot of very interesting music has been made by people who wouldn't know where to start with some of Fr∆nk's most complicated manipulations of air molecules.
Noot Gurnrick 🤣
Edward Van Halen was asked to induct Frank by his family but Eddie declined because of his shyness.
Respect to Eddie if this is indeed true.
Wondering about the boos Lou got as he walked on stage ?
Here is something he once said about Zappa.
" Zappa is the single most untalented person I heard in my life," he sneered. ""He's a two-bit, pretentious academic, and he can't play rock 'n' roll, because he's a loser. And that's why he dresses funny. He's not happy with himself and I think he's right."
ouch !
Frank is a Mother and Lou is a mother.... !!!
Wow man, when and where was that said?
@@thechief5670 In a magazine interview in 1973 when he was asked what we felt about other musicians. Apparently their tiff goes back to 1966 when they were both starting out. It was published in a 36 page booklet by Nigel Trevena titled " Lou Reed & The Velvets".
BUT VU's lead guitarist Sterling M guitarist really disliked Zappa , quote " Sterling Morrison held a serious grudge against Zappa for the rest of his life, making no effort to hide his contempt in interviews. “Zappa is incapable of writing lyrics. He is shielding his musical deficiencies by proselytizing all these sundry groups that he appeals to,” he told Fusion in 1970. “He just throws enough dribble into those songs. I don’t know, I don’t like their music. … I think that album Freak Out was such a shuck.” He was even more blunt a decade later when speaking to Sluggo! magazine. “Oh, I hate Frank Zappa. He’s really horrible, but he’s a good guitar player. … If you told Frank Zappa to eat sh*t in public, he’d do it if it sold records.” John Cale was not a fan either.
Not boo's they were saying Lou
@@toddgilbert They're saying Boo-urns...Boo-urns... Excellent.
Lou was known for being a nasty fellow in real life
Meanwhile, here's what Lou said about Frank to "Melody Maker" in 1974:
"He's probably the single most untalented person I've heard in my life. He's a two-bit pretentious academic, and he can't play rock'n'roll, because he's a loser. And that's why he dresses up funny. He's not happy with himself, and I think he's right."
And re Zappa, John Cale chimed in as well, saying, "He isn't really interested in music...he's using music for ammunition."
A lot can change in 21 years my guy
There were reasons for that. First of all, Reed wasn't an easy person to deal with (he attacked Andy Warhol too at a point, and The Velvet underground could have not existed without Warhol), and Zappa (who hated junkies) even mocked them during a concert were they were together. But then Zappa appreciated the music of the Velvet and Reed was able to recognize Zappa's talent too.
Sounds from this he got over it in a big way. It's time we did, too.
From the speech pattern and the bitter negativity, if I didn't know this was Lou Reed I would say it's Donald Trump.
Because that's exactly the way this guy talks.
But I do appreciate you posting that if it's just for the sake of history.
@@ptose i doubt that zappa could afford to mock them, he looked pathetic against their background
@@II-xl7lj even if you doubt it, that's what happened. If I recall it right, after a piece with Nico singing and playing the organ, he went on stage on the same organ playing a funereal tune singing stuff like some italian recipe in a german accent imitating her voice... but you can find the story easily
Huh though Lou hated him still don’t like punk but good speech
This was all bogus according to Dweezil.
Frank would have agreed, but still it needed to be done. Frank is one of rock's most influential persons.
Damn, they "beneath the throat " Lou Reed!? I wonder how many of them would admit to that?
This is especially funny seeing as Lou hated Zappa and thought he was talentless hack
The hatred goes both ways. There's a hidden lyric on WOIIFTM saying "I get to work with The Velvet Underground which is as shitty a group as Frank Zappa's group"
later on though, they began to agree
ZAPPA WS A MUSICAL GENIUS
¿Abuchearon a Lou al principio? 😳 ¡¿Como se atreven?! El abrió puertas al 75% de la música. 😡
It wasnt a boo
I don't believe Lou was the right person to make this speech. Steve Vai, Terry Bozio or Alice Cooper would have been so much better. Lou just rambled on and on not making any sense at times. I remember watching this speech live.
A “nice” speech, but let’s remember this Mr. Reed is the same Mr. Reed who covertly fired Mr. Cale, it seems because he needed a scape goat for the fact that Mr. Reed was not selling many records.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Mr. Reed’s art, but this is politics and propaganda (with a fair share of truth, of course). Let’s not do Mr. Reed a disservice and not call him out for his transgressions.
I LIKE THE BOOS [NOT BOOZE
Hall of Shame...
Lou and the Velvet Underground were admited to the Hall the very next year.
best part of this is, Lou getting booed.
They were chanting "Lou"
@@henrys5291 have a close listen, it is BOO!
There saying louuuuu
Like, does the academy not know that Lou Reed hated Zappa and thought he was one of the most talentless people he had ever heard? Why would you pick him to induct Zappa? That's so weird, yet typical for the academy to not know that.
Do some research dude before posting crap. They resolved stuff and Reed acknowledged he had been a dick. So weird , yet typical another comment gets made on youtube by a MrkNOWITALL who knowS fck all.
clearly that was no longer the case by the time of the induction
@@TCA17 still, weird, there are so many people you can select to induct, why select someone that hated this artist? Why not select someone who was influenced by him? Or adored him? Or even appreciated him? It almost seems like they purposefully wanted Reed to induct, just for the irony.
@@seanpanigel5494 you are actually right on that point SP it was a bit weird but I very much doubt Lou Reed would have done the speech for any other reason than to get chance to right the wrong he had made decades ago when he was undeniably brilliant and equally as undeniably an insecure dick.. He came out with load of crap about Beatles and others at time also.. Probably was more about Lou Reed covering his own back than huge mutual respect for Zappa found in 30 years since sixties though..
This explains things somewhat though..
Zappa Honors The Hall Of Fame
By Bill Holdship
If anyone out there is wondering why Lou Reed (who never had a good word to say about Frank Zappa during Zappa's lifetime) was chosen to induct Frank into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame ... well, so is the late rock musician's family.
Says his widow Gail Zappa: 'Ten days before the actual ceremony, we still hadn't received invitations; the producer said, "Oh, that's unconscionable! We can give you two free tickets and arrange for two of you to fly from LA to New York." Well, there's five of us, of course ... He said, "Well, we can sell you additional tickets at $1,500 a piece ... but you can't sit together." I just laughed. He said something about non-profit organizations, but they can kiss my ass about non-profit organizations, especially when they were going to exploit it this year as a TV show!
'But Moon had expressed interest in going, so we decided she'd accept the award. A week before the ceremony, they called me and said Edward Van Halen - who would have been perfect - had turned down their offer to induct Frank because he doesn't do these things. So, I suggested Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, who Frank knew, loved, and had worked with. They said, "No." I won't say why, because I don't want to hurt Johnny, but I did tell them that Johnny was one of the most lucid and articulate people I've ever heard interviewed.
'I suggested Aerosmith, but was told they were going to induct Led Zeppelin. So, I suggested Led Zeppelin. Again, they said no.
'I asked them who chooses these things, and I was told "the Board." I asked if there were any musicians on the board, and, more importantly, are there any black musicians? They had to call me back, and they replied: "Yes. One. Berry Gordy."
'They called back, and said "We've invited Lou Reed to do it!" I was laughing. It was just so ironic. I said I'd talk to my kids, and they were against it; they believed Lou had millions of chances to make up with Frank. So Lou called; I told him, "Listen, you said lots of shitty things about Frank." We discussed it, and he finally said, "If I said anything flip that was meant to be funny, I'm sorry." Actually Frank admired him as a songwriter; Femme Fatale and All Tomorrow's Parties were two of Frank's favorites.
'We asked for a car to take Moon to the ceremony. The producer told Moon that I said she'd be the one giving clearance to use the Frank footage on MTV, which was totally not true! He said, "That's OK, the show's running long, so we'll just cut Frank." Moon called him back, and made him apologize for making her father sound insignificant. A limo did take her to the show, but there was no one to pick her up! I have this vision of her standing in the rain, flagging down a cab, with the award in her hand!
'I watched the broadcast, and they didn't play any of his music, although they played at least one song by every other artist. And then I heard Joe Perry say that Led Zeppelin had asked Aerosmith to induct them months before, so how come we got word a week before? This is a man who went to Capitol Hill for these people! When Moon said Frank would've enjoyed it, she meant the musicians.
'As Lou said, it honored the Hall to induct Frank, not the other way around. It was stupid, insensitive, and just thoughtless.'

@@seanpanigel5494 I don't know the details, but if what Lou Reed said it's honest, it looks like an amazing choice to pick someone that didn't like him and ended up realizing he was wrong

No he fckin didn't , he played Velvet Underground songs when guesting as Radio DJ. At no point ever did he say he hated Lou Reed as person , Warhol and 'factory' drug influence on Velvets he detested . By the way Zappa himself did a fine job of dishonoring his wife in the years they were married many many many times
Lou can't read. Who knew? Newt gingger rick???? Groan. Terrible read. Jeez.
R. Jay stewart beautiful speech. Youre just an idiot
He obviously didn't write it all.
Musicians can't speak, so they communicate through their music.
You should get some treatment, complications have already started
Lou even mentioned his reading problems in his early '70s song " Kill You Sons " about when his brain was fried from electric shock therapy.
