As a judoka (and you jiu jitsu player too) I can say that Danaher's judo it's IMPRESSIVE, very technical, effective, beautiful to watch, and not just effective for bjj but for judo too.
Yeah, he's smooth AF
Dude is a 3 decade Combat Specialist legend. Myth has it, that when Danaher takes of his rash, another one grows out automatically within 5 minutes.
He doesnt do any judo due to his leg injury, never has,he just has a good understanding of its principles but never had any decent standard in randori.
He is operating on a different level. His perspective is one of first principles.
we need more of danaher's bernardo impersonation.
this is not a request, it's a demand.
At what time he impersonates Bernardo?
@@Roro-tg2dc the video is called "best takedowns for bjj"
He been impersonating him for years with that hair cut 😂
Look who got his black belt!!!! congrats Bro
1:10 "When you ask the average person, 'hey man, get some skills in the standing position'"
John Danaher thinks about Jiu-Jitsu so much that he can no longer conceptualize the existence of minds with less than a rudimentary understanding of the sport of Jiu-Jitsu.
😂😂😂😂😂
lmfao
Yeah he's on video. But he's not teaching beginners technically. He's literally speaking to two black belts and the video is AVAILABLE for YOUR convenience. Why would he explain rudimentary principles to high level practitioners? Lol someone of his caliber is really only working with high level guys.
😂😂😂😂!
It's a huuuge honor for me to be watching this video
21:35 Thats some legendary body language!
I'm a guard puller & I approve this message!
would love an instructional on the business side of jiu jitsu like opening and running a gym. OSSS
Focus on kids, the kids memberships pay the bills and keep the lights on. Plus you can coax parents into your program. Many schools now offer credit for extracurricular athletics programs. FYI.
Just become a world champ. No problem. Lots of people will want to train with you.
@@roamready9732 crazy I made this assumption about my gym must be true everywhere.
@@renga19 I don't know why it's crazy; old school gyms that broke everyone that came through the door had terrible retention and if your in a 'business' then you want people to stick around. So, good thinking 👌
The gracies have such a program. I suspect there are issues with their system, based on my experience with their school, but it might be a very good starting point.
I get the feeling that the schism of Ju-jutsu 130 years ago into judo and Jiu Jitsu is about to be healed.
When a video starts with "huge honour for me", you know it's gonna be a great video! OSS!!
What an amazing view of standing skills for a BJJ practitioner, I personally see guard pull on a bad way, just sit to skip on the standing phase and avoid takedowns. John give me a totally new prospective of how to approch and the philosophy behind the
techniques. Thank you so much for your sharing John and Bernardo, amazing teachers!
Nobody:
Danaher: Yiés
Jordan Knope the furst great comment 😂 thanks
John Danaher is a perfect example of what a vast technical jiujitsu player can do when he is also a MASTER TEACHER! Bloody brilliant!! Cheers!!!!
Can't wait for Danaher's boxing instructional next
With Mike Tyson!
Back takedowns are absolutely part of the Judo curriculum. Look at ura nage, Ushiro Goshi, utsuri Goshi, Tani Otoshi, Russian ko soto, te guruma. Most of the hip throw counter game is based of behind behind the person and countering their throw. Sure we have to make sure they land on their back to score, but we still start many throws from the rear position. Ura Nage is my best throw by far.
I'm not a Judoka but I do like Tani Otoshi. I often get to a sideways, back position. Once I line up our toes for safety, I'm good for the takedown.
Exactly and some players use those moves offensively aswell
Also that tani otoshi he did where he said I would not score in judo would have scared a wazari
We need to get prof Danaher louder microphone pls
Same in all the Faria videos. Hehe. I literally almost bought a new wireless clip on mic for Bernardo, but had some financial setbacks.
Most guys will teach you a double leg.
Jon Danaher will teach you a double leg only after a philosophical speech on the weaknesses of Jiu Jitsu and the effects of takedowns on the global economy.
I'm sure I'm late to the party but congrats on the Black Belt promotion Giancarlo. I bought volume 1 and he was still a brown belt in that one. Oss!!
Good lucid ideas. Thank you.
when are you going to film the self defence instructional?
lol
Love the techniques shown at 9:50 and 11:29. So simple, yet so effective.
I wonder how you can adapt 20:40 and 23:40 to no-gi.
The 20:40 one I've seen in Catch as a counter to a body lock, where you go on a high tripod, wrap the leg and roll through into a kneebar, snake pit usa has a video on it
Boa!!! "Igree" with bernardo
John Danaher - ultimate thinking man.
A huge honour as allways! Oss
I really like this Jiu Jitsu channel!
Esse é o cara do momento de verdade
Good stuff.
Loving volume 1 so far! Thanks John!
Lol . Ikr
Can you please share what you paid for the 3 volume set? It's currently available at a 42% "fall discount" for $288 😫
Impresionante John 🥋. tiene una técnica excepcional una enciclopedia de estradas salidas agarres etc ...
That butterfly/gaeshi sweep from the guard pull is exactly what I was thinking of months ago (randomly). I was thinking if pulling was done like this, it'd be better for the sport as far as guard pulling.
It's exciting to know the sport is developing.
I totally agree with Danaher. I recently found a love for the grappling arts. I started with Hapkido. I will stay doing Hapkido combining BJJ, judo and Silat because, there is a relationship I see in them. I see how they formulate a complete system.
I just started Judo and I'm loving it. I'm considering Hapkido in the future mostly because I'm interested in joint locks. Does Hapkido teach leg grab takedowns?
Yes but, you will focus on what your teacher gravitate towards mostly. Hapkido is like a Jack of all trades but, master of none. However, what it does, it does it well… I love it because, it’s very affective in that it seeks to address situations with the mindset of inflicting the most amount of damage in the shortest amount of time. It was adopted in the special forces in Vietnam. It have a few leg take downs.
@@GenericName86 Joint locks wont work in a realistic fight
So much talent thank you all
Just cross train at a Judo club, they do it day in day out, and you get to fight people outside the club, you won't get better, then learn your rear take downs at the club, some of the best players in Jujitsu are also Judoka, plus the speed of transitions in judo is much faster cos they only get a couple of seconds, so it's unexpected in (BJJ) anyway. Just my opinion. Great video though.
I love that john does all this with a crippled leg and the things he says make so much sense that you feel stupid for not coming up with it. "instead of pulling to open guard, why not pull directly into ashi garami"................... fuck
As someone who is new to jiujitsu I must say that these clips are fantastic.
Next instructional: Gene LeBell ear biting techniques.
Seriously though, I need me some part 1 and 2 take downs. Ty.
Esse cara é muito bom. Muito bom.
God bless this man
i love how everyone stands up and sits down with john lol
Judo does have back attacks ura nage and tani otoshi usually used as counters but some players use the offensively
Some sure, but I think he meant it's not a focus or common
@@MyZ001 it is common
@@MyZ001lmao it's common
Congratulations on the black belt Giancarlo 🤌
you guys are great, love this
I'm a simple man: I see Danaher & Faria, I hit like & save!
are volumes 1 and 2 which he talked about also here on UA-cam?
A huge honour for me 😋❤️
master, what is the best way to defend yourself from the five point palm exploding heart technique, or is it a bit of a rear choke situation?
I'm so glad to hear all of this. My opinion has been the same forever- always win the takedown, no matter what.
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"
--Mike Tyson
@@abehaile2659 well, there's no punching in bjj comp, so I guess the plan goes forward
@@MyZ001 figuratively. Figuratively getting punched in the mouth, like getting slapped in the face is a reference to an alarming surprise. Saying "always win the takedown no matter what" is a great plan until someone else's plan overpowers yours like a punch in the mouth
@@abehaile2659 Yea, but ol' Iron Mike mean that shit literally😆
Do judo in parallel to your Bjj, Judo will teach you to off balance and open up the opponent and speed to get in, forget pure judo throws. Develop your own dirty judo style for your stand up Bjj like where you use your rear hand to pull them and your leading hand to scoop up the leg. If you have the speed you can actual get a foot in to make it look like a throw when they pull guard. These foot sweeps are demonstrated incorrectly, as you move your opponent around he steps to get his balance back, as he steps and his foot touches the ground he starts to transfer his weight onto that foot, as he is transferring his weight you use speed to sweep and use you hands to continue the wheel to off balance.
That's a lot of words to simply say time him and use a cross pick
Its my opinion that Nicholas Meregali has the single most aggressive guard in jiujitsu, BECAUSE HE PULLS GUARD TO SCORE/SUBMIT and not as a means to not be scored upon. This is exactly how everybody should be playing guard.
What about Gordon Ryan’s?
@@adonisgroup3242 gordon ryan shakes hands and sits down. embarrassing
@@ijustwannaleaveacommentony6511 shakes hands, sits down (pulls guard), destroys opponent. I used to hate seeing people pull guard too until I learned what was going on 🤷🏻♂️.
It's a huge honor to hear it's a huge honor...
I am at least 20 hours into study or vol one and half as many on the mat drilling. Amazing content and changing my game for the better. I Would like to get some takedown in no gi also. Any plans for that?
I love how he thinks of the standing game as a 1,2,3 punch to throw off your opponent. He will never know what you're going to do if you hit him with a take town, then a guard pull counter, then a guard pull and sweep.
like the way explains differcult technique so well and make it's so easy to do .
Beautiful video, brother, really love how John explains everything. Subbed.
John speaks about learning these techniques so passionately that I sometimes start feeling like the future of humanity is dependent on us improving our game… and I’m just a dumbass white belt.
Single leg with Khabib would be amazing :))
Bernardo "Honored" Faria
❤️❤️❤️
Links to vol. 1 and 2?
So I'm a 2 stripe blue belt (just got my 2nd stripe Friday). I look very similar to Bernardo Faria in appearance. Same age too. I think we could make an awesome prank somehow...
18:45 BJJ Genius....
If you counter a takedown and expose your opponents back, should you get 2 points for taking your opponent down and then 4 for taking the back?
Yes, as long as you get your hooks in. At least i think so, I’m not a ref :)
Another factor never spoken of is how little time most hobbiest have to train if you factor in some strength and flexibility training on top, you can't train everything so you need to pick wisely to maximise the amount of lads you can beat..
Get a Jiu jitsu training dummy and a judo training dummy. It helps you practice technique / speed / power at your own pace. Just keep in mind the lack of resistance and weight.
Pulling guard is something people who play Jiu-Jitsu do... if you take it seriously you will never pull guard but learn to fight for the takedown instead and then kick into your ground game if you came out on the bottom
i forget how huge bernado is when he's standing up 😆
I've never understood why people sit right down, yes in jiu jitsu you always hear that most fights end up on the floor but ALL fights start standing up, id say takedown are key
If there were a bunch of takedowns in BJJ, people would get hurt like crazy--just as they do in judo and wrestling. How many persons over thirty wrestle or do judo? Very few. Adults who have jobs and families don't want to go to their martial arts class and get snapped in two, and end up in the emergency room. It's definitely important to learn takedowns, but I think we're fortunate that they play a relatively small role in BJJ.
Osssssss
Did Jean Carlo just get his black belt?
Anybody else just see a full grown Hasbulla when they watch John danaher?
I thought guard pulling began in the Kosen Judo rule set, not BJJ. In any case, I think it is correct to say it started in Jiu Jitsu because Judo is part of Jiu Jitsu. I don't think it is correct to call BJJ by Jiu Jitsu. BJJ is an element of the set Jiu Jitsu just as Judo, Sambo, and some other styles are. Jiu Jitsu is much more than BJJ. I love your videos by the way. Mr. Danaher is so insightful and Mr. Faria is so humble, a true martial artist.
Bjj, jeet kune do, wrestling, muay thai i think would be a solid foundation
Ryan Hall vs BJ Penn
Danaher is a genius.

Commenting for UA-cam algorithms2
Most of these Attacks are for gi. Is there a part in the dvds for nogi?
That will be next instructional.
Fix the sound pls
It feels weird wasting my time saying this, but I completely agree with everything Professor John said.
Brazilian jui jutsu is a form of judo
Like sambo
I think the best reason John Danaher is the goat is that he’s been ahead of the game consistently
flying triangles are easy - John Danaher
I think Gordon Ryan in the absolute at 2019 ADCC that was Coached by this Professor. So he is intimately aware of top level players with no stand up.
3:56 who else laughed at? hahaha
Danaher speaks about the 10 skills of standing game, but I don't recall the last one. Anybody knows which one did I forget?
1.- Front takedowns
2.- Back takedowns
3.- Front mat returns
4.- Back mat returns
5.- Counter takedowns
6.- Recover from failed takedowns
7.- Aggressive guard pull
8.- Counter guard pulls
9.- Submissions from standing position
10.- ???
Turning a guard pull into a sweep. The sweep will score and land you in the same place as a takedown
@@stephanskerra9807 I thought that was the aim of the aggressive guard pull. How are they different?
@@adrianarroyo937 you're probably right. I thought turning a guard pull into a submission, and turning a guard pull into a sweep were seperate items. Countering a guard pull is also somewhat different to takedown defence. It's unclear to me also
I assumed it was out gripping the opponent, it's the first thing he discussed.
@@stephanskerra9807 Thanks for your thoughts anyway!

Not a single danaher video anywhere that you can hear a word he is saying.
What if we ask John about the Egyptian pyramids?
Just cross train in judo and be done with it. 😂
too bad John doesnt allow short silences sliding in by constantly disturbing them with 'huumm'. great coach tho
Guard pulling is a Jiujitsu skill that should only be used in Jiujitsu competitions. In a real fight you're extremely vulnerable on the bottom when there is no mat and no rules that prevent striking.
Danaher feet look so greedy when he kicks 😂
If a takedown is 2 pts, shouldn't you receive 2 pts if your opponent pulls guard? You've effectively coerced them to go to the ground. That would also have the effect of minimizing the number of guard pulls in scored competition settings. This is similar to how ADCC point scoring works.

I wish John does his gi instructionals in no gi
you are in luck he is releasing a series for that after this gi takedown series. it will be all about positional no gi jiu jitsu leading into his submission systems

"The Complete Skills For The Jiu Jitsu Standing Game" you mean Judo, right?
Can Elon Musk soon fix neuro-link, so I can connect to John! ty in advance.
I was expecting techniques for an ACTUAL "standing game" instead of various examples for take downs. There are times when it is not wise to go to the "ground game".
Yeah but its a jiu jitsu video for competition-based jiu jitsu bruh the entire way the game is played is someone gets on the ground and either submits or is submitted.
They didnt brand this as some self defense or mma video
