Thank you so much Mike for your great feedback!!!🙏🏻🤩😍 It was the first time we played it live... and yes, they missed the break (drum / vocals only) after guitar solo😅
I know and for us guitarists out there she missed the best line. "You do nothing, you are nothing, you sit in here all day and play that sick repulsive electric twanger."
There's also a video version with an extended intro of the dad digging into his son. But my favourite part has always been when the whole band is hanging out a window that's too small for them all, while singing the chorus 😅
It was in the video, but it was an homage to Animal House. The actor who played the dad is the actor who played Needermeir in Animal House. "Is that a pledge pin?" is his line from Animal House.
Ah, that "Twisted Sister Pin" part is from the music video. We had that on tape when I was a kid but it started on the part where he says, "What do you wanna do with your life??" Actually that might have been for "I Wanna Rock." Oh well. Now I'm gonna go watch the full intro now. Excited! Thanks @TheGreatBaronOBeefDip for letting me know. :)
Mark Metcalf, the actor portraying the father in the video, had previously played Neidermayer, the ROTC student commander in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). In a reference to his role in the film, Metcalf says "A Twisted Sister pin? On your uniform?!" in the video. Snider himself can also be heard cursing and swearing the question "A pledge pin? On your uniform?" at the end of the song.
Not only that, the actor in the video is the same actor from the movie "Animal House" where he says the same line but replaces Twisted Sister pin from Pledge pin. Definitely an homage to the movie.
It's actually so great to see a series like this that doesn't feel rude or insulting to these bands in any way, only informative and good-natured. Excellent work Mike
It's a riff on his character from the movie Animal House. He sees a fraternity pledge pin on the ROTC uniform of one of the main characters and utters the line that then gets used in the Twisted Sister video.
"Fix this band" quickly became some of my favorite content of all the channels I follow. I can't think of another piece if content that I click on faster. I played in a band/bands for many years and now I'm an old chunk of coal, raising my daughter on the sunny shores of Florida; this series really takes me back... we had some great shows, some not-so-great shows, some bad shows a few just awful nightmare shows where you just wanted to choke the sound guy and leave. When the acoustics or sound guy is working against you, it's over... "the game was rigged from the start"
As a bassist (primarily), I'm glad you talked about the bass part. The guy did a good enough job faking it--most audiences aren't going to know or care about what's going on in the bass half the time unless they're musicians--but the real line is so much cooler and more fun to play than what he's doing. The really jarring thing, though, is, like you mention, how the singer and band start in different keys.
Bassist here, and I totally wanna stress something you said - playing "the real line" is so much more fun! Maybe some bassists are bashful about getting busy, but this bass line doesn't do anything too weird - it just moves and grooves. It's almost like a Duck Dunn bass line. You could even fake it just by playing scales. Fun!
There is something charming about hobby rock bands. You might be not a professional musician, but you get enough will to still get on stage from time to time and have a good time. That is precious.
Hobby rock bands (Dad bands) have a hard time finding gigs. It's not hard if all you want is to play for beer money to an empty house, but club owners have serious expectations - here in the Twin Cities anyway. In my most recent band, at our 2nd gig I made exactly enough to pay for parking at the club. (We did okay later.)

I was in a cover band like this, with day jobs, family responsibilities, limited practice and reherasal time and shows few and far between it was all we could do to pay some respect to the music of our 25 or so song setlist to try to give the audience a great time. So wish we could have had nailed every song! Your suggestions are so spot-on we're lucky to have your channel, wish you were around 30yrs ago because we could have used your great advice! This band was having a blast and audience was loving it!

🤘🏻🔥Congrats on 862k Subscribers! Love this, I totally agree with all the points you make here, those extra little layers in the vocals, guitars and drums etc. I can hear them even more now you point them out, they really do make and complete the song. They still did a killer job with the song, could definitely feel the energy of the band, the singer especially and the crowd, i'd totally be joining in if I was there. THANK YOU! This song means alot to so many, struggling today. It's become an Anthem..as Dee Snider appeared on C-span speaking on behalf of free speech, back in the Tipper Gore ban 🚫 list, in the 80's.
I think someone has a crush on the singer hahaha. Great video, once again. This series is terrific. Whenever I start drifting off guitar practice I watch one of these and I'm fired up again.
Thank you so much for starting this series, hands down one of the most informative and fun to watch guitar related content I've ever seen and also being a lead guitarist in a (for now) cover band its a great way to learn about playing live, stage presence etc.
The thing that she said in the beginning was in the music video for twisted sister's 'wer're not gonna take it' it is what the father was saying to the child
I really like these series, there is a lot to learn about playing live, even for people who have played many many shows. I had a talk with a band coach last year and really learned a lot in a one hour session.
Mike, your tips are always very helpful. I started playing open jam nights in Stillwater and this is one of the songs on my list that I'll be doing soon.
@15:40 - 15:50: I don't think the singer is motioning to the drummer. She was just doing her normal stage-precense hand movement. Also the drummer was saying "NO"! during the chorus of the song. Same time as the singer said it.
Nice review Mike. I love the positive comments and constructive criticism. Would love to see some follow-up interaction/interview with these bands and a follow-up performance.
Dude these guys were awesome. Honestly, i'm really happy to see one of these where it just kind of feels a little more positive at least from the band's end. Like, i'm not suggesting that you're mean spirited in any way, in fact anything but. But like, at no point did it feel like people are listening to it and cringing at certain points. This band is definitely really good, and its really cool to also see them in the comments. Lots of love and respect from me. I've embarrased myself at karaoke bars enough to know I couldnt do what bands do lol
Yeah this band sounds and feels great! I feel this one is more of a cover, less of a tribute or note-for-note version, and they made up for some of the variations with great energy and the lead singer carried 💯
Lol this is great. I went to a show 2 weeks ago and my step son and I (both moderately seasoned musicians who have been in bands) were watching one of the opening acts (local band) and I was doing exactly this. I was trying to figure out what was wrong and how they could fix it. Great idea for the channel.
Very good advice on this song! Constructive criticism has always helped me. My cousin has lived in Zurich for 25 years and I've had lengthy visits a few times... you're spot on for what they do well and they'll tell you exactly how the Swiss are the best at everything!! they aren't a humble people (I'm saying this in jest, but it still mostly holds true!), in my experience :)
Funny... I'd say it's the other way round... 😅 We always tend to "oooh, well, I can't really do this, just give it a try... thank you, but...." Swiss people tend to feel ashamed to be proud and confident about what they arr doing. Maybe a bit different in Zurich, though😂
Saint Paul, MN here, how about this mild winter?! In my last and only real paying band, we had an MD. Musical director, by default or by choice, can improve the bands details, by first hearing rough sections, and then asking to drill them. So, 2,3,4,♫-again, 2,3,4. If all are not on board to a level of excellence and improvement, this can lead to friction. Great series, Mike, and good on y'all to Breeze for playing with spirit and attitude- 1st run with no train wreck. Hexellent! Keep on freeing in a rock world!! Ü ♫
I saw some kids in club years ago when I was stationed in Germany in the mid 90s do this song. It was bad but it was also their very first gig and they were just getting somewhat proficient at their instruments. The singer had a music stand with the English lyrics in front of him. I think about that band a lot. I wonder if they stuck with it.
Always a pleasure to see you continue this series. I totally agree on the backing vocals part. The bass player looked like he totally had his version of the part down so some gang vocal shouts would have added a lot. Though one thing to add which while valid the sound tech. Which as a sound engineer I know the feeling. Unfortunately most sound tech at small club levels aren't really there cause they love the music. Often they are jaded and don't care about the mix. Thus resulting in things such as hard to hear instruments. Which is why often bands who do care about their sound will hire/bring their own sound tech who cares and knows the bands sound.
Another great breakdown analysis video, Mike. The up & coming rockers out there would do well to heed your advice on providing a reference note during the song intro. Think how many bar bands we've all seen that show such promise when they hit the stage, then die on the vine with the first vocal salvo. Lost momentum is lost opportunity to impress. You've been killing it lately with this series of videos, I've been forwarding so many to my students. Thanks!
Was gonna say the opening line was from the video...but you already mentioned this. So, I'll say it anyway so I can feel good about myself. Some real good advice...well done, Sir.
I was looking forward to your take on this; you hit every thought I had on this video and then some. And funny that you also wanna tag any big ending in E with “Hit Me With your Best Shot”, I do that too! 🤣
Well done, the singer moves with the groove, other bandmates might want to groove with it instead of standing stiff boards, after our third song we are usually sweating moving with the groove and crowd, even if crowd is not moving we feel the groove, our singer and bassist are good at interacting with crowd, takes tension of us to feel more relaxed, and move and groove more.
Funny you mention the covered stage floor !! We used to carry a 15 by 8 ft. piece of Astro Turf we stole from the Astrodome supply room it was a friend who worked their that got it for us . But it helped with our sound and we really liked that it was easy to clean from puke to spilled beers ect. that happened at shows LOL Great Times back then !!
Apparently you missed those Twisted Sister videos where Mark Metcalf loosely revisited his Niedermyer role in Animal House as a livid father berating his son for his taste in music. That was a satire of Neidermyrer excoriating a frat member in ROTC class for wearing a pledge pin on his uniform Animal House is an old movie I get it. You are a great and experienced guitarist. I wish these videos weee around 10 -15 years ago when I was in a Metallica Tribute band. You nail a few things I could not quite master I love the fix the band videos and u hope you keep doing them
I love this series and your insightful feedback. Would you maybe consider doing one of these for Eye of the Tiger Electronics by Rex Viper? I feel like they could grow a lot with some professional feedback.
I agree with a lot of these assessments. Set lists evolve as players get the tunes down. I’d say that the dual lead is a must for this tune. But I remember joining a band about 15 years ago. They had been together for well over 20 years and I had to learn 65 tunes in two weeks for a show at a festival. One of the tunes was Reelin’ in the Years, by Steely Dan. I had to play all of the leads (and some rhythm). They had a rhythm guitarist and he lit me up after the show for not knowing those very unconventional leads note for note. Ok. I figured it out eventually and got all of the iconic (weird) riffs down. A year or two later, I break a string and while I’m switching out guitars, I hear the rhythm guy botching his part of the dual lead during the bridge. What??? He could play it. After the gig I asked him what the deal was. “I can’t play that fast.” Dude wanted me to learn 65 tunes exactly like the record in 2 weeks. “Bro, you’ve had 25 years to practice.” Victory was mine that day. Haha. But my point is that in a month they might have worked out all of the details and sounded much different.
Yes... It's Swiss German - sort of a strong German dialect, but still a language itself. German people mostly don't understand us, depending on which Swiss dialect we speak. Small country, big diversity😄😃 But, we write in German, there is no written Swiss language☺️
Mike, heres a question. When u are not playing to a big/enegretic/rocky audience thats not going to sing along since u are a small unknown band, wud you consider playing such open, spaced, empty song that relies on crowd singalongs. Think 500 miles, come on feel the noise etc. (Not including 7 nation cause its fills all the melodic space super well)
My question is with the harmonic space, so the sound is filled and not - drums along, big guitar chords, vocals alone. Songs that make that instrument feel "naked" so to speak leaving most frequencies empty noticable
Mike- got my Jem Jr. 2 werks ago, i used your review before i got it. After 2 weeks, i love it. I have 4 other mid level guitar's and until now i thought they were perfect but now i see small maybe 5% issues with all the NOT JEMs. Guitar is all feel for me, the JEM is better than i though.
First thing I noticed was she didn’t get a pitch check and sang the first line out of key before the guitars started…. You mentioned it after I posted… you’re correct, the guitars really need to come up, you really can’t hear them much in the mix. No excuses, we’ve all forgotten breaks or stops in songs! We get carried away, caught up in the moment but it didn’t really ruin the song.
This band is not bad at all but your suggestions are definitely trending towards getting better. Love the band’s energy, though, I’ll sing along with a beer in hand 🤘
Nice comment on the two-guitarists' syndrome. I've only met a few in my career who understand what 2 guitars can do. When they do the same thing it drives me nuts.
The "joke" is directly from the "We're Not Gonna Take It" music video, where Mark Metcalf reprises his role of Neidermeyer from Animal House, in which he gets in a guys face about his pledge pin. In the music video, he screams about a Twisted Sister pin. It's kinda meta.
How did you not recognize that she was referencing the "pledge pin" line from "Animal House", which was satirized in the music video by the same actor who said it in the movie?
This was a solid performance, especially while compared to those from earlier episodes. The vocalist is really good and somewhat charismatic, I like her attitude. All of them are actually decent, I felt that bass player was kinda "lazy" not just with his bass part, but also he just stands there, almost still. And I know he's there to play the music, not dance, but part of the performance is the presence. The solo also, in my opinion, lack emotion. Sure, it is played mostly ok, but that's it. I agree that it would take just some minor detail for this band to be a lot better, because the foundaion is solid and I wish we'll see them in the future. Better and stronger.
“Twisted Swisster”
I want to pin this comment but unfortunately I had to "pin" my ignorance of the "pin" part first. I will eventually, good call. :)
Haha, yesss🙌

The "inside joke" is a reference to the music video.

Hey , just curious what the FB page is where you’re finding these vids ?
I think they used a same clip for both! I remember being so confused when I was little.

In a reference to his role in the film, Metcalf says "A Twisted Sister pin? On your uniform?!" in the video. Snider himself can also be heard cursing and swearing the question "A pledge pin? This really shows the value of a good drummer. He does a great job. Drummers get a lot of flack but they hold the whole band together.
Love this series. We're here to learn not to insult.
@15:40 - 15:50: I don't think the singer is motioning to the drummer. She was just doing her normal stage-precense hand movement. Also the drummer was saying "NO"! during the chorus of the song. Same time as the singer said it.
The joke at the start is the start of we’re not gonna take it music vid
The Breeze rocks you
The Breeze is a really good band and its cool that the singer contacted you.
Nice review Mike. I love the positive comments and constructive criticism. Would love to see some follow-up interaction/interview with these bands and a follow-up performance.
This is easily one of my favorite youtube series
Come to think about it, this is the best Swiss band I've ever listened to. Dare I say, this is the best Swiss band in the world!
Thank you!😅
Celtic Frost is a Swiss band though... So ehm... I recommend the first couple of Celtic Frost albums!
Aww, thank you so much!🙏🏻😀
Yeah this band sounds and feels great! I feel this one is more of a cover, less of a tribute or note-for-note version, and they made up for some of the variations with great energy and the lead singer carried 💯
Oh yeah totally you gotta nail that bass part, this is a fun song on bass, but overall this was great!
This is the best series!! Thanks for new episodes!!!
loved this video and your critique and the band's performance.
Mike you've been on fire lately. Awesome content!!
Thanks. Got a BAD TAB and an Artist Series coming out soon. Can't stop lately.
Please make a video about it again if they decide to record a later followup performance!
Thanks!
Gorgeous JEM man! 😮
These are so much fun to watch! And a good learning opportunity! Can you help jazz or Dixieland bands? Ha ha ha.
I like the band. The singer has great energy.
Been really enjoying your channel lately Mike.
Apparently you missed those Twisted Sister videos where Mark Metcalf loosely revisited his Niedermyer role in Animal House as a livid father berating his son for his taste in music. That was a satire of Neidermyrer excoriating a frat member in ROTC class for wearing a pledge pin on his uniform
Animal House is an old movie I get it. You are a great and experienced guitarist. I wish these videos weee around 10 -15 years ago when I was in a Metallica Tribute band.
You nail a few things I could not quite master
I love the fix the band videos and u hope you keep doing them
Good tips there Mike. I wish someone had done this for the band I was in.
Haha. But my point is that in a month they might have worked out all of the details and sounded much different.
im in a band right now in my school and im playing guitar and drums like you but im a lead guitaris
Keep it up, son
Well done, man. And all of those tips would help propel them to a higher level. Diggin' this series.
the part at the beginning with the "what kind of a man are you?" you can easily understand if you watch the music video for this song
Swiss speak German with a Swiss accent for the most part. Their big into rock. Check out The Jackets. My favorite Swiss current band.
That twisted sister pin thing is also a reference to the pledge pin thing from the movie Animal House.
Love your guitar.
This band is not bad at all but your suggestions are definitely trending towards getting better. Love the band’s energy, though, I’ll sing along with a beer in hand 🤘
I’m fixated on the early 90s Target halogen stand lamp
😂
Nice comment on the two-guitarists' syndrome. I've only met a few in my career who understand what 2 guitars can do. When they do the same thing it drives me nuts.
True words it drives everyone nuts
The "joke" is directly from the "We're Not Gonna Take It" music video, where Mark Metcalf reprises his role of Neidermeyer from Animal House, in which he gets in a guys face about his pledge pin. In the music video, he screams about a Twisted Sister pin. It's kinda meta.
Those are lines from the We’re not Gonna Take It music video she’s talking about before the song.
I love this series!!!!
Love this mike. Knowing this song so well I noticed many of the same points. Especially… where’s the bass line
How did you not recognize that she was referencing the "pledge pin" line from "Animal House", which was satirized in the music video by the same actor who said it in the movie?
When we finish in E . I suggested The Spirit of Radio lick😅
Lol that works but you *gotta* nail it :)
